Joining the children at the event, top, were Community Board 9 Chairman Jim Cocovillo, left; Mary Ann Carey, CB 9’s district manager; Nancy DeCroce of the Ozone Park Kiwanis Club; Rosemary Ciulla-Frisone, DOT community coordinator; Randy Smith of DOT, Ronald Garib of Glasso Trucking; Stephen Restaino and Sal Palmeri from DOT; and Stacey Hodge, director of freight mobility at DOT.

The man who assaulted a woman outside a Woodhaven laundromat was sentenced to seven years in prison last week. Richard Kassebaum, 42, who last lived in Lindenwood, was found guilty of following a 40-year-old woman out of a laundromat where he worked on Woodhaven Boulevard on March 31 around 4:30 a.m., grabbing her from behind as she walked along 86th Avenue and choking her. The woman screamed and Kassebaum let her go. He was caught on surveillance camera following her out of the laundromat and running back into the building a

few minutes later. He was convicted earlier this month of first-and third-degree sexual abuse and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation. Kassebaum served 18 years in prison for manslaughter for stabbing his epileptic aunt to death in her Flushing home in 1990. He was released on parole in 2009. When he was arrested in April, he was originally charged with another stillunsolved sex attack on a jogger in Forest Park the same day. Police voided that arrest and rearrested him for the WoodQ haven attack.
