WELCOME The days are getting longer and the lure of the great outdoors is getting stronger – spring is finally here! With the Park bursting into colourful bloom, not to mention family activities and some thrilling events, there’s plenty to look forward to over the coming months. It’s hard not to feel cheerful in spring at the best of times, but with this year marking the 5th anniversary of the reopening of the Park we’re feeling positively giddy. There’s been quite a transformation since the London 2012 Games, although we’re proud to still have world class sporting events taking place across the Park and will even be the first venue in Europe to host Major League Baseball when it comes to London Stadium in June. Copper Box Arena will also have the eyes on the world on it, with a tense Fed Cup tie having taken place between Great Britain and Kazakhstan in April followed by an exciting weekend of Street League Skateboarding in May. Over at the London Aquatics Centre, we’re hosting the prestigious FINA Diving World Series, with the UK’s top diving talent competing for a place at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Alongside all these incredible sporting events (plus a spectacular gig from stadium rockers Muse in June), there are many other memorable days out to be had just exploring the Park for yourself. The Great Get Together will have free activities for the whole family to enjoy, or enjoy an unforgettable trip up the ArcelorMittal Orbit – then test your nerve with a trip back down The Slide! All this, plus the beautiful parklands, canal paths and meadows of the Park that are free to visit and open seven days a week. Spring is a season with its fair share of holidays and long weekends, so make sure you make the most of them with a visit to the Park!

5 YEARS OF THE PARK

5 YEARS OF THE PARK Once the south of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park officially reopened in 2014, we wanted to create a destination locals, visitors and international superstars alike would want to spend time. Five years and 27 million visitors later, we like to think it’s become exactly that! It was no mean feat, and the transformation itself took two years and a whopping million working hours to complete. Doing so also provided plenty of employment and learning opportunities for local Londoners, including 60 construction apprentices – the largest on a single site in London – to learn new skills. These opportunities have continued to grow over the last five years, with plenty more apprenticeships, jobs and courses opening up to the local community along with shiny new purpose-built schools. Thousands of other jobs are coming to the area in the shape of International Quarter London, home to Transport for London, Financial Conduct Authority and more, Here East and the upcoming

East Bank project – you can read more about them all throughout this magazine. We’re also proud of how welcoming and inclusive the Park is as a destination; from careful design to our Park Mobility services, we believe it’s one of the most accessible parks in the UK. The opening of The Slide at the ArcelorMittal Orbit in 2016 and our striking custom-built playgrounds make it the ideal destination for a family day out, while the world class sporting venues and lively bars and restaurants have provided plenty of entertainment for people of all ages. Over the past five years we’ve continued hosting international sporting events, as well as opening our doors to musical megastars, festivals, marathons, art installations, urban beaches and many more. There have also been some fantastic free events, including Harvest Stomps, Family Fun Days and the Great Get Togethers – make sure you get this year’s date in your diary for the latter! Just as the area was transformed for the 2012 Games, and after to become Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, so too is it continuing to change. Here’s to five more fabulous years, and all the exciting things yet to come.

SPRING SUMMER 2019 • THE PARK • PAGE 3

With spring in full bloom, that puts summer firmly on the horizon, and this year Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the only place to be – not least because of another amazing programme of events at London Stadium. From sporting legends to musical megastars, a sizzling summer awaits at this iconic venue. British rockers Muse don’t just bring stadiumfilling sound, but you can expect a full-on spectacle too when they come to London Stadium on 1 June! Their only London date as part of the Simulation Theory World Tour, sing along to tracks from the latest album along with much-loved hits spanning their twenty-year career. PAGE 4 - THE PARK • SPRING SUMMER 2019

It’s another milestone for London Stadium this summer as it becomes the first venue in Europe to host Major League Baseball. The weekend-long event will see the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox – one of America’s greatest sporting rivalries – go head to head as they compete in front of a sold-out Stadium. Expect an incredible atmosphere at this historic sporting spectacle! Looking ahead to later in the summer, we’ve got a date for the diary of anyone who wants to relive the thrill of the 2012 Games! In July, the Müller Anniversary Games return to London Stadium for another year, after being founded in 2013 as a legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Past events have included the likes of Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah and Laura Muir competing and the standard looks set to be similarly high this year, as the world’s best athletes compete in this iconic sporting venue.

LONDON STADIUM

London Stadium tours From the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony to sell-out rock concerts and countless West Ham United home games, London Stadium has seen its fair share of iconic moments. Now you can get a behind-the-scenes look at this magnificent venue with a fact-filled guided tour. Snoop around the dressing rooms, sit in the dugout and even experience that glorious walk through the tunnel onto the pitch. If you’ve always wanted to see the Stadium through the eyes of a sports star, this tour is a must!

London Marathon Community Track Feeling inspired by the Müller Anniversary Games? Schedule in a trip to the London Marathon Community Track. As well as being home to the Newham and Essex Beagles, a leading athletics club with over 25 Olympians among its alumni, the track is also available for public and community use. It’s an allweather track too – perfect for the somewhat unpredictable British summer! Visit london-stadium.com/community-track

LONDON AQUATICS CENTRE

DIVE IN After stopping off in cities around the world including Beijing and Montreal, the FINA Diving World Series is coming to London for a thrilling season finale in the London Aquatics Centre! Dame Zaha Hadid’s incredible venue, setting for so many unforgettable moments throughout the 2012 Games, is living up to its reputation as the Pool of Champions as it plays host to some of the world’s most renowned diving stars. Watch Olympic, World and European champions compete in solo and synchronised sessions, and don’t forget to cheer on the home team – which includes Grace Reid and Tom Daley, who trains at the London Aquatics Centre. Whether you’re a fan of diving competitions or just want to experience something new, this is a fantastic opportunity to see world-class athletes compete ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo! With both evening and daytime sessions available, find a way to make a day of it and spend some time exploring the Park (plus its tempting food and drink options).

Q+A with

e e L y t t a M Matty Lee is part of the British team competing at the FINA Diving World Series. Alongside picking up medals around the world, he’s also recently paired up with Tom Daley in the 10m synchro.

How have you found training in the London Aquatics Centre? It’s great! I’m originally from Leeds but moved down to Stratford when I started working with Tom. I’ve really enjoyed exploring the Park too – you can completely forget you’re in London. You and Tom have only been diving together since October. Does it take a while to get into a rhythm with a new partner? It can do, but luckily it didn’t take too long for us. It’s a privilege to be working with one of the best divers in the world and I’m learning so much from him – he’s said he’s learnt a few things from me too which is nice to hear. Do you prefer individual or synchronised diving? I think synchro can be more fun – it helps when you’re friends too as there’s always that level of trust, and when you’re more relaxed before a dive it can result in a better performance. That said, the pressure can be higher with synchro diving as you don’t want to let your partner down!

SKATEBOARDING

DON’T MISS A TRICK For the first time ever, skateboarding is set to become an Olympic sport as part of the Tokyo 2020 Games. If you can’t make it to Japan, pop to Stratford instead – you can catch the best in the world competing when the Street Skateboard League world tour comes to the Copper Box Arena. Taking place from 25 – 26 May, the event centres around skaters testing their nerve and showing off their top tricks around the custom-built course. With points counting towards qualification for the 2020 Games, half pipes will be high and the stakes will be even higher… There’ll be more skating events for you to get on board with that weekend as Innoskate, the prestigious American skating festival, comes to the UK for the first time from 24 – 25 May. Held at Here East, Innoskate is a collaboration between Street League Skateboarding and the Smithsonian Institution (one of the Park’s East Bank partners) so expect everything from hands-on workshops to panel discussions.

Alex Decunha is one of the UK’s top skateboarders and has competed in skating events all over the world. We spoke to him about how it felt to have the competition taking place a little closer to home: Are you excited to have the event hosted in London? Yes! Imagine an event where they got all the world’s best footballers together in one room at the same time – the atmosphere is amazing. These events are live-streamed and watched by people all over the world, so to be able to see it in person is incredible!

For more information, visit QueenElizabethOlympicPark.co.uk/events

Q+A

Alexnha Decu with

What can people expect to see at this event? The Street League format is based on tricks, so competitors get a minute to skate the course and do as many tricks as possible. This is a chance to see the absolute best skateboarders compete, so the standard will be really high. What do you think about skating becoming an Olympic sport? I think it’ll have a really positive impact on skating culture, and hopefully will inspire a lot of young kids to get involved and take it further which is really exciting.

Designed by Sir Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK’s tallest sculpture and an iconic addition to the Stratford skyline. Like the Park, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is also celebrating five years of attracting visitors from far and wide after re-opening to the public back in 2014. Due to popular demand, there’ll be extended opening hours over the Easter holidays from 10am to 6pm – so you can still soak up those beautiful London sunsets.

AROUND THE PARK

SUMMER AT IQL

International Quarter London – the business district at the entrance to the Park – has an exciting and jam-packed programme of events planned for the spring and summer months, with something for everyone to get involved in. Your Stratford Stage will be kicking off in May, offering a month of live arts and culture. Located against the backdrop of Endeavour Square, the public space at the heart of IQL between Westfield and the London Aquatics Centre, the programme will feature performances from the worlds of dance, theatre and music including local cultural talent. Endeavour Square is set to be an inspiring environment throughout May! June brings with it the outdoor Summer Screening series, with IQL broadcasting a variety of sport, culture and family-friendly films for everyone to enjoy. All events are free to attend, with street food and drinks on hand if you want to make a day of it. Keep checking the IQL website for more details on what’s happening when.

Find out more at InternationalQuarter.london

In July, the project will complete its third commercial building, which is set to be the new headquarters for Cancer Research UK and British Council. This will also mean a new section of public space for people to enjoy.

FOOD AND DRINK As more and more bars, cafés and restaurants open around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, there’s an even bigger choice of delicious treats! Barge East – one of our newest venues – was recently rated London’s top rated restaurant on TripAdvisor! Set on a hundred-year old Dutch Barge moored near Hackney Wick, it’s a great place to stop for lunch or dinner, as well as craft beer, barista coffee, cocktails or a glass of wine. Combined with the great selection of bars and restaurants on Canalside at Here East – including The Breakfast Club and Four Quarters – it’s a great new area of the Park to explore at a weekend. More food and drink options are also now opening at the entrance to the Park as part of International Quarter London – including a Pret A Manger, Tonkotsu ramen and Signorelli’s café. And the Park itself still

has great options for meals and snacks of all shapes and sizes with The Last Drop near the ArcelorMittal Orbit, the Timber Lodge café near Tumbling Bay playground in the north of the Park, and kiosks along the main Park boulevard.

EAST BANK

EAST BANK UPDATE While work begins on east London’s new powerhouse of culture, education, innovation and growth, the world-renowned East Bank partners are already making their mark on the local area. When you visit the Park over the coming weeks and months, you may notice some changes taking place as work begins on the Stratford Waterfront site, the part of East Bank that will include the BBC, Sadler’s Wells, UAL’s London College of Fashion, and the V&A, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. Work on UCL East, another part of East Bank, will also be starting soon in the area south of the ArcelorMittal Orbit. As hoardings go up around the works, keep an eye out for the new mural that will decorate a section near the London Aquatics Centre. Designed by a student from UAL’s London College of Fashion, the colourful – and infinitely Instagrammable – print

proves that even in this early stage the East Bank site is showing some characteristic creative flair!

While works might be in their initial phases, the positive impact of these world class institutions coming to the area has been felt by residents and visitors alike for some time. Bringing exciting new cultural opportunities into the local community forms an important part of the East Bank promise, as well as working closely with existing artists and institutions in and around Stratford. Education is also at the heart of the East Bank project, and this too is something that’s already well underway with the EAST Education Summer School running again after a successful first year. A collaboration of all the East Bank partners, the Summer School gives young people in east London the opportunity to choose from a diverse range of courses covering everything from hip-hop theatre to game design.
