Welcome to our summer season. This programme is chock-full full of theatre, storytelling, music, comedy and much more. This is my first summer in Folkestone, and I am looking forward to everything that lies in store. Not only do we have the Quarterhouse events to get excited about, but also the Folkestone Airshow, Jim Jam Theatre’s festivals in the coastal park and a whole host more family events and festivals. And of course, days on the beach. The rest of the Creative Foundation is also going to have a busy summer with the Open Quarter weekend and the opening of the Folkestone Triennial 2014 (see page 18 for details). This season is built around bringing brilliant artists to Folkestone and creating opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in the programme. Whether it is a post-show discussion, an intimate evening with an author in the bar or craft workshops for the Follow The Herring exhibition, we want you to come and watch, and then come to connect, learn, play and create. Have a look at our Get Involved section (see page 17) to try your hand atdrawing, poetry or improvisation. And if what you want to do isn’t on offer, let us know! Everything we currently do has been suggested by a local artist. We are always looking for new ways to reach new audiences... and you can help us do that. If you are 16-23 years old, you can join our Young Company for a completely free two week summer intensive workshop with our Associate Artists Transport Theatre (see page 17). Don’t miss this completely unique opportunity to develop a new show with a professional company.

The landscape is so familiar, snaking through the town centre, the bricked over thoroughfare, the brightly glowing hoardings, the bins, the bollards, the benches, the big brand names. But what histories, what mysteries, lie behind the pedestrianised retail zone? Who was Mr. Boot? And Mr. Smith? Who is Claire? And when did she get so into accessories? Who is that woman over there? And what on earth is she doing…?
Spring 1881 is tipping over into summer and everyone is waiting for the silver darlings, the migrating herring, on which all their livelihoods depend. Packing the herring is women’s work and young Molly must learn to tie her fingers before joining a gutting crew, but it is the tie between a mother and a daughter which is at the heart of this award-winning play.

Written and performed by Danny Braverman, directed by Nick Philippou. In 1926, shoemaker Ab Solomons drew a picture on the wage-packet he gave to his wife Celie. He then drew a cartoon weekly throughout their marriage until the early eighties. These cartoons, chronicling the Solomons’ family life through all their ups and downs, were recently discovered by his great nephew.

Danny Braverman’s solo show tells the funny and moving story of how he uncovered the lost art of his great-uncle. Premiering to critical acclaim at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013, bread&circuses’ new show takes audiences on a journey of searing honesty, spanning decades and generations.
From a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes us on to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris before their inevitable separation by war. A separation which she hopes today, will finally come to an end. A tender, comical and ultimately poignant portrait of one woman’s experience of love and war.

A High Street Odyssey is a promenade audiotour of a pedestrianised shopping street, which has been performed at festivals all over the UK and adapted for Folkestone as part of Open Quarter weekend (see page 18 for details).
Get Up and Tie Your Fingers will be staged alongside an exhibition in the Quarterhouse bar, the exhibition will include pieces created locally in craft workshops with artist Di Burns. Act of Killing Thursday 22 May
Focusing on the Indonesian killings of 1965–1966, Oppenheimer’s documentary shines a spotlight on the perpetrators. Challenging them through film to act out scenes about their experience of the killings, the film seizes the opportunity to expose how a regime that was founded on mass murder could be overlooked. This is a film that challenges audiences like no other.

Gordon Corrigan: A Great and Glorious Adventure
There are more ways than ever to get involved at Quarterhouse...
Wednesday 14 May, 7pm Tickets £7 / £5 concessions Join us for an evening of intimate discussion with Gordon Corrigan and his latest novel A Great and Glorious Adventure. The Hundred Years War was fought between 1337 and 1453 over English claims to both the throne of France by the right of inheritance and large parts of the country that had been at one time Norman or, later, English. The fighting ebbed and flowed, but despite their superior tactics and great victories at Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt, the English could never hope to secure their claims in perpetuity: France was wealthier and far more populous, and while the English won the battles, they could not hope to hold forever the lands they conquered.
In this book, Gordon Corrigan explores a war that helped shape two nations and how it still has implications today for both Britain as a country and its military tactics. Gordon Corrigan was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1962. He was awarded the MBE (military) in 1996 and retired from the Royal Gurkha Rifles in 1998.

This year they have some exciting new plans for both plays and performances. The project culminates in script-in-hand performances of the plays written and performed by the workshop participants at Quarterhouse as part of Word on the Street Festival.
Once a month Quarterhouse is taken over with activities that come from and are led by local creatives. Summer Scratch Night
Irma Kurtz, Cosmopolitan’s ‘unshockable queen of advice’, talks to Book Festival curator Geraldine D’Amico about the seismic transformations that have taken place over the last four decades as witnessed through the readers’ intimate stories from mother-daughter relationships through to eating disorders, office politics and those perennial areas of interest: love and sex.
IT’S YOUR TURN. 16 – 23? Got an interest in performing arts? Quarterhouse associate theatre company Transport will lead a free two-week summer programme for 16 – 23 year olds. 15 participants will get the chance to work for two weeks (Mon-Fri) with theatre professionals to explore and be inspired by a particular theme, resulting in a final performance in the Quarterhouse.

Scratch is an opportunity for artists to develop new work in response to feedback from the audience. If you are interested in meeting other artists, getting involved in the Quarterhouse programme in the future or you’re just interested in getting a sneaky preview of what Kent-based artists are up to, come along to scratch.
Warm, funny and perceptive, this promises to be a great conversation and a chance to meet and ask your questions to everybody’s favourite agony aunt. She will also sign copies of her book, My Life in Agony, available at a discounted price for one night only.

Folkestone Triennial 2014: Lookout

What’s On
Parking The nearest car parks are Tram Road (2mins), Payers Park (2mins) and the Harbour car park (5mins). All council car parks charge daily fees starting from £1 per hour. There is limited parking available behind Quarterhouse which requires a parking permit that can be obtained from Quarterhouse for £3 per day. For more information please call Quarterhouse Box Office.
By Train High speed trains run regularly from London St Pancras International (journey time 57 minutes). The last return train from Folkestone to London is at 22:56. By Bus or Coach A direct National Express coach service runs from London Victoria Coach Station to the main bus station in Bouverie Square, Folkestone. Stagecoach operates a network of routes linking local towns and villages to Folkestone.
