Welcome to the spring season at Quarterhouse, and the first offering of the new team. We are building on our strengths with lots of big comedians, shows for children and families and more great gigs to come. We are particularly excited about welcoming Kent-based Propellor Theatre with their adaptation of Henry V for young audiences and the brilliant band British Sea Power on Easter weekend. We’ve had emails from you telling us that you want to see more regular events, so we’ve lined up a Thursday night comedy club (with a curry deal!), the No-Wave Social Cinema Club, and Scandalmongers storytelling night for adults. We also have lots on offer for local artists, from the Try Something New platform for new work to the monthly improv gym to flex your creative muscles. We would love you to join us to celebrate our 5th birthday on Sunday 2 March. It will include face painting, circus workshops, a bouncy castle and probably too many sweets. And like every good five-year-old, we are busy making new friends and working out who we are in the world. If you care about what we look like by the time we turn six, come get involved. We want to see you at an event, hear your ideas and introduce you to some of the artists that we love. Uninvited Guests stage an event that is somewhere between a wedding reception, a wake and a radio dedication show. We speak of our own and other’s loves – deep, passionate, ambivalent and unrequited – and dedicate songs to them.

Moses is a 2-foot high puppet with a cardboard head and a lousy temper... who lives on a table. He’s always lived on the table. He’s a table top puppet. Tonight he wants to tell you an epic story about his namesake, ‘Moses’. But he is easily distracted and tries to mime the conversation between God and Moses on the top of Mount Nebo, demonstrates the workings of puppetry, shows off ‘the running man’ and falls out with his puppeteers... As his carefully constructed table top world falls apart, will he ever finish his story?

Three intrepid contestants compete in a series of games, from the hilariously stupid to the arbitrary and downright heartbreaking. Their aim is to make CB world famous to prove that an alternative to the current mind-numbing offer was viable and wanted. Care of Henry tells the story of Hugo, who has to choose who to stay with while his Mum has a baby. Should he choose Granny, Mrs Mariposa next door, or Uncle Jack? Who will care for him and his dog Henry the best? This is a gentle, heart-warming story about the friendship between a boy and his dog. Told in a visual, engaging style, with enchanting puppetry and delicious design, children are sure to be delighted by Pied Piper’s latest offer.

A Magic Lantern Play & Workshop
Expedition to the Exhibition Sunday 2 February, 11.30am and 2.30pm Adults £6 / Children £5 / Family £20 (2 adults, 2 children) Victorian sisters Alexandra and Margaret have got their wires crossed! Alexandra, the loud and adventurous explorer, believes she will be preparing young volunteers for a ‘Great Expedition’ to foreign lands.
This interactive part-workshop part – performance, combines theatrical games (such as Prince Albert Says… and Build a Brunel) with creative activity in an immersive, character-lead setting which informs participants about Victorian culture and entertainment.
Margaret however, a collector of weird and wonderful artefacts, knows their young audience shall be presented with some of the worldly wonders on display at the 1851 ‘Great Exhibition’. Upon realising their misunderstanding they decide to present a magic lantern show, demonstrating survival tips for a trip to the London extravaganza.

We are really looking forward to celebrating our 5th birthday. Come join us to celebrate! A whole afternoon of indoor FUN for all the family, taking place in the Quarterhouse spaces. Polarbear makes things up; stories, jokes, adventures – a master maker-upper. But where did it all begin? Mouth Open Story Jump Out is about the moment that started it all, and how one little decision set off a chain reaction that changed his life forever. International assassins, secret codes, dog eating boa constrictors and much more fill the hole left when a father disappears and a boy discovers a talent for telling tales.
Welcome to the ‘Curious Creatures’ wildlife park, established by Jeremiah Johnson: world-renowned explorer, zoologist and animal collector. Nobody knows more about animals than him. Unfortunately, Jeremiah Johnson is currently lost somewhere in the jungles of Africa, so he has handed the running of the park over to his inexperienced nephew Craig… and things don’t quite go as planned. Expect to meet curious creatures of all shapes and sizes: from performing fleas and gymnastic snails to irritable alligators, over-excited elephants, and a very intelligent orangutan!
The show explores truth and invention, looking at how language is crafted to shape meaning. Connected to the Key Stage 2 and National curriculum, children will develop literacy skills and use their imagination to fill in the gaps in the story, creating their own characters and working as a group to develop narrative.

DJ Nick Bright comes to Quarterhouse for an under 18s DJ night, in association with 105.9 Academy FM Folkestone. Nick is one of the BBC’s rising stars, appearing live on Radio 1Xtra every weekend. For this Under 18s Night he’ll play the biggest chart and urban tunes, with a selection of his personal favourites.
One of the great bands to emerge from the late ’70s, Nine Below Zero deliver a rip-roaring blend of blues and R&B. Part of an exclusive tour with the world-renowned boogie woogie piano player Ben Walters this is a show not to be missed.

Independently run Laughing Boy Comedy Club have put on some of the most successful shows in London over the past 10 years and now across the country. Laughing Boy is part of Off The Kerb Productions who have been booking comedy for many years. Mostly people get on with living their lives, but everyone has one thing that pushes their buttons and sends them over the edge. What’s yours? Now he returns to what he does best – mischief and joyous bad behaviour with a purpose. After his award winning show Bravo Figaro, Mark sets himself the task of committing 100 Acts of Minor Dissent in the space of a year. Mark catalogues everything from the smallest and silliest gesture to the grandest confrontations and the results are subversive, hilarious, mainly legal and occasionally inspiring. No-Wave Cinema Club This spring Quarterhouse has teamed up with local culture collective No-Wave to bring you some of the finest cinema around. Expect cutting edge, independent and art house cinema, as the team present a programme that ranges from cult classics to controversial documentaries and everything in between. No-Wave already produces a free, non-profit independent culture magazine and after a highly successful cinema night in Canterbury we are proud to welcome the No-Wave gang to the team. Photographer James Balog through his Extreme Ice Survey, discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Balog’s hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds as ancient mountains of ice disappear at a breathtaking rate. Consisting of three vignettes along with separate yet somewhat related sketches, Coffee and Cigarettes pulls together an all-star cast (including Bill Murray and Wu Tang Clan) as their conversations and daily lives unfold around smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. No-Wave will team up with Manifest Coffee and serve a selection of specialty coffees throughout the evening.

Made between The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, The Conversation was a return to small-scale art films for Francis Ford Coppola. Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is hired to track a young couple. Nick Henessey Thursday 3 April, 7.30pm Tickets £7 / £5 concessions A Harper’s Trade There was a time when ‘to harp’ meant to speak, when harpers travelled the length and breadth of the country telling stories and singing songs. As they travelled, the stories and the songs they carried with them were shaped by the places they went, by the roads they took and by the very wind that blew about them. Over the last 15 years Nick has been developing a vibrant and exciting style of performance that harpers of old would recognize. Drawing deeply from the wellspring of traditional sources, this performance of song and story re-interprets the material for a modern 21st century, with powerful and evocative language and an innovative style of harp playing.

Land Where I Flee Prajwal Parajuly Monday 24 February, 7.30pm Tickets £7 / £5 concessions To commemorate Chitralekha Nepauney’s 84th birthday, her grandchildren are travelling to Gangtok to pay their respects. Agastaya is flying in from New York. Athough a successful oncologist at only thirty-three, he is dreading his family’s inquisition into why he is not married. Joining him are Manasa and Bhagwati – one the Oxford-educated achiever; the other the disgraced eloper – one moneyed but miserable; the other ostracized but optimistic.
Prajwal Parajuly – the son of an Indian father and a Nepalese mother – divides his time between New York and Oxford, but disappears to, his hometown in the Indian Himalayas, at every opportunity. Land Where I Flee, parts of which were written while he was a writer-in- residence at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, is his first novel.
All three harbour the same objective: to emerge from the celebrations with their grandmother’s blessing and their nerves intact – a goal that will become increasingly impossible thanks to a mischievous maid and a fourth, uninvited guest.

The Sacconi Chamber Music Festival
a candlelit performance of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with violin solo performed by the extraordinary Finnish virtuoso Pekka Kuusisto. The Sacconis will be joined by the Royal College of Music Chamber Orchestra to perform Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen and there will be two world premieres of newly commissioned works by Simon Rowland-Jones and Stephen Deazley. This is an informal group open to all with an interest in learning and exercising a basic improvisation practice. It is intended as a space for practitioners to work out their creative muscles, and practice their improv skills in an informal and enjoyable environment. We will explore a range of techniques including straight, comedy, long and short form. Parking The nearest car parks are Tram Road (2mins), Payers Park (2mins) and the Harbour car park (5mins). All council car parks charge daily fees starting from £1 per hour. There is limited parking available behind Quarterhouse which requires a parking permit that can be obtained from Quarterhouse for £3 per day. For more information please call Quarterhouse Box Office.
By Train High speed trains run regularly from London St Pancras International (journey time 57 minutes). The last return train from Folkestone to London is at 22:56. By Bus or Coach A direct National Express coach service runs from London Victoria Coach Station to the main bus station in Bouverie Square, Folkestone. Stagecoach operates a network of routes linking local towns and villages to Folkestone.
