Tickets £10 / £8 concessions / Ages 12+ / 90 mins Part gig. Part play. Part apocalypse

Tales from the council estate of dodgy best friends, that rite of passage; your first arrest, dinner with your social worker and the Christmas dad went to prison.

Set in a dystopian future steadily steam-rolling towards catastrophe. When the apocalypse finally arrives, astronaut Jim Walters is suspended in orbit, broadcasting his songs for the end of the world back to a silent Earth where the few remaining survivors must fight for their future.

An autobiographical performance told through storytelling, singing, rapping and a loop station. Created by Conrad Murray and developed with Battersea Arts Centre, DenMarked explores the extent to which we are marked by events in our lives.

Inspired by Philip K Dick’s post-apocalyptic novel Dr. Bloodmoney, Ziggy Stardust and 1950s rock’n’roll, Songs for the End of the World is a show like no other. Dom Coyote is an associate artist of Kneehigh Theatre and his high octane, multi-instrumentalist band, the Bloodmoneys, has toured and recorded with artists including Beth Orton, Scissor Sisters, Gary Numan, Goldfrapp, Beth Gibbons, and Tinie Tempah.

Conrad is co-founder of hip-hop theatre company Beats & Elements, director of the Battersea Arts Centre Beatbox Academy and Rodium Records.

‘We want social housing, not social cleansing.’

A funny, bold & provocative coming of age tale.

On 19th October 2013, 29 sheltering single mothers and children received eviction letters. Faced with the threat of sky-rocketing rent or forced relocation, these women launched a campaign that pushed housing to the top of the political agenda.

You’ve heard of an Essex Girl and a Chelsea Girl but what is a Hounslow Girl?

E15

The Diary of a Hounslow Girl

From traditional Pakistani weddings to fights on the night bus, The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is told through the eyes of a bolshy hooped earring, headscarf-wearing 16 year old British Muslim girl growing up in West London. A funny, bold, provocative play highlighting the challenges of being brought up in a traditional Muslim family alongside the temptations and influences of growing up in and around London.

From the Houses of Parliament to the streets of Newham, this piece of documentary theatre is adapted exclusively from real-life testimonies of the Focus E15 campaign to provide a truthful re-telling of a national issue and how one group of women refused to be marginalised.

First there was Bridget Jones’s Diary, then Legally Blonde, and now there is The Diary of a Hounslow Girl, geared up to take on the world. A comic story of dreams, aspirations and coming of age.

Loud, raucous and angry, but also deceptively disciplined and focused. The Guardian

Cracking adlibbing….a joke-rich rallying call for a better Britain. The Guardian Potent live performer… can nail a nonsense with beautiful economy of words. The Times Worried about your job? Worried about your family? Worried about yourself? Worried about the health service? Education? Climate change? World War 3? Worried about worrying? Sod it! Come and have a laugh about it. It’s one of the things we do best. Or is it? Was it something we did best but like everything else has now gone West. Or South. Or East. Ah - go on. Take a risk. It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the House of Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM.

Multi-award winning Bridget Christie brings her critically acclaimed, sell-out show to town.

A track record like that suggests a privileged friend of the rich and famous with little or no understanding of or care for the ordinary citizen but since leaving the house a decade ago, Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship and creative energy, as found in our great Victorian Railways, and the daily toil of the working man. A historian at heart, he has used a Victorian railway guide to take millions of TV viewers on a historical voyage of discovery throughout the UK, Ireland and most of Europe. Listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it. Box Office 01303 760750

Music. Power. Jealousy.

“I’ve no talent for life.”

Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcast live from the National Theatre, and with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.

Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free...

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God. After winning multiple Olivier and Tony Awards when it had its premiere at the National Theatre in 1979, Amadeus was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film.

Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern production of Ibsen’s masterpiece. Gemma Arterton is Joan of Arc, broadcast live from the Donmar Warehouse.

Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity.

Bernard Shaw’s classic play follows the life and trial of a young country girl who declares a bloody mission to drive the English from France. As one of the first Protestants and nationalists, she threatens the very fabric of the feudal society and the Catholic Church across Europe.

A ship is wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother Sebastian is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible.

Josie Rourke (Coriolanus, Les Liaisons Dangereuses) directs Gemma Arterton (Gemma Bovery, Nell Gwynn, Made in Dagenham) as Joan of Arc in this electrifying production.

Tickets £60 / £36 concessions Women! Always wanted to write fiction? Or haven’t written for a while and want to kick-start your practice? Then this low-cost, women-only, 6 week ‘Ignite’ course is for you.

A series of morning walks through the local landscape on the first Friday of every month. Led by eco-poet Chris Poundwhite of Go to the Pine, the walks will be taken mainly in silence and include readings from In Praise of Walking by the Scottish poet Thomas A Clark.

You’ll develop skills in characterisation, dialogue, creating dynamic settings and other essential writing techniques in a warm, welcoming environment. You’ll learn to push through doubt, reduce fear of the blank page, become disciplined and enjoy writing so much more. Over two hundred women have graduated from Write like a Grrrl and For Books’ Sake’s Ignite courses. Stop dreaming and become your dream. Tackle selfdoubt. Gain strength and a sense of community. Revolutionise your writing.

“There are things we will never see, unless we walk to them.” Dogs welcome. Please wear suitable shoes and dress for the weather – we will walk rain or shine!

We welcome self-identifying women of all ages.

FILM

I, Daniel Blake (15)

Thursday 26 January, 7.30pm / Tickets £5 / £4 concessions Daniel Blake has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain. Directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty and winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2016.

Fire at Sea (12A)

Thursday 9 February, 7.30pm / Tickets £5 / £4 concessions Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2016, Gianfranco Rosi’s incisive, poignant and deeply moving portrait of the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa and the humanitarian crisis occurring in the seas around it is both a masterly work of documentary filmmaking and a timely call for urgent action. Situated 150 miles south of Sicily, Lampedusa has hit headlines as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of refugees hoping to make a new life in Europe. After spending months living on the island and engaging with its inhabitants, Rosi accumulated an incredible array of footage portraying the history, culture and daily lives of the islanders. The result is a lyrical, poetic and searingly powerful documentary that casts neither judgement nor aspersions, but simply shows the world to the viewer - to utterly devastating effect.

American Honey (15)

Thursday 23 February, 7.30pm / Tickets £5 / £4 concessions British director Andrea Arnold (Wuthering Heights, Fish Tank) takes to the American road with her fourth feature introducing magnetic newcomer Sasha Lane who plays a teenage girl with nothing to lose. Star, a free-spirited teenager on the brink of adulthood, leaves her troubled home in the American Midwest and hits the road with a mag crew - itinerant laborers who peddle publications door-to-door for long hours during the day and party hard at night. Led by hard-driving manager Krystal (Riley Keough) and her seductive enforcer Jake (Shia LaBeouf), the crew becomes a surrogate family to Star, offering hope, love and the freedom that comes from being on the road. Shot by Arnold’s longtime cinematographer, Robbie Ryan, American Honey buzzes with beautiful light, majestic backdrops, an urban soundtrack and a truly fizzling potent energy, this is a fresh take on the American road movie.
