What’s On

23

There is a strong intergenerational thread running through the programme from Gary McNair’s account of his grandad’s unusual gambling habits to Soho Theatre’s depiction of an unlikely friendship between a disaffected teenage girl, who thinks she knows it all, and an unconventional East End widow who actually does know it all. Spine unites young and old through a love of books and this year’s Folkestone Book Festival brings together an eclectic mix of talks, readings, ideas and performances starting at age 3 with Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler and encompassing rock’n’roll with iconic US singer-songwriter Kristin Hersh. Jim Jam’s Living Advent Calendar has fast established itself as a Folkestone tradition and December wouldn’t be the same without an astonishing array of events popping up behind Folkestone’s doors – look out for Quarterhouse at door number 8! Finally, snuggle up for winter with our ever-popular Christmas show. This year we are delighted to welcome back the extraordinary story-tellers and puppeteers Pickled Image. Christmas Tales with Granddad stays on-topic with an intergenerational tale to warm the cockles of your heart.

Show And Tell with Gary McNair

A Gambler’s Guide To Dying Wednesday 21 September, 7.30pm Tickets £10 / £8 concessions Ages 14+ / 60 mins Winner – The Scotsman Fringe First Award 2015 What are the odds of living an extraordinary life? This is the story of one boy’s grandad who won a fortune betting on the 1966 football World Cup and, when diagnosed with cancer, gambled it all on living to see the year 2000. Soho Theatre and Francesca Moody

Gary McNair shines in this beautifully written, deceptively simple, warmly comic piece that accumulates layers of meaning through the act of storytelling itself. Rich and earthily funny – a genuine pleasure. The Guardian

East End widow. Mischievous activist pensioner Glenda is hell-bent on leaving a political legacy and saving Amy from the Tory scrapheap because ‘there’s nothing more terrifying than a teenager with something to say’.

Spine

Thursday 20 October, 7.30pm Tickets £10 / £8 concessions Ages 16+ / 65 mins

McNair is a truly impressive performer, charismatic, relaxed and fascinating to watch. The Scotsman

In this era of damaging austerity cuts and disillusionment, has politics forgotten people? Can we really take the power back? Amy is about to be forced to find out.

From fast-rising Channel 4 playwright Clara Brennan, comes the Fringe First and Herald Angel award winning Spine, a hilarious and heart-breaking call to arms for our modern age.

McNair’s acting style is guileless, almost gauche, but don’t be fooled, he has pinpoint comic precision. Financial Times

An outstanding piece of writing. British Theatre Guide

Spine charts the explosive friendship between a ferocious, wise-cracking teenager and an elderly

Antarctica is the most inhospitable climate in the world. It’s the driest, windiest place on Earth, synonymous with lack of life, failed expedition attempts and the crisis of climate change. A place with no artists for miles around. A place that Chris Dobrowolski decided was perfect for him.

Settled... Until suddenly you’re not... Candid, poignant and intimate, this new play by award-winning playwright Ali Taylor offers a timely reflection on the social impact of spiralling rents and forced relocation.

For three and a half months Chris lived and worked alongside the medical professionals, researchers and scientists at the British Antarctic Survey, trying to experiment creatively whilst (crucially) trying to survive. He discovered that sometimes it’s very difficult to justify your position as an Artist whilst everyone around you is a Hero. Antarctica is an adventure story-PowerPointpresentation about overcoming hardships and celebrating difference via tales of carnivorous ducks, Ladybird books and a sledge built out of gold picture frames.

Michele Stodart Thursday 22 September, 8pm Tickets £12 advance / £14 on the door

Kristin Hersh

Over a decade since pop rock band The Magic Numbers landed in the top ten with their double platinum selling debut album, Michele Stodart releases her second solo album Pieces confirming that, almost by stealth, she has turned into an artist whose work bears strong comparison to some of the touchstone songwriters that helped shape her outlook. Michelle and her band (which includes members of The Magic Numbers) have already played the acoustic tent to an enraptured crowd at this year's Glastonbury Festival and supported Ben Watt of Everything but the Girl on a full UK tour.

Friday 25 November, 8pm Tickets £10 / £8 early bird, concessions & friends A rare solo appearance from cult 4AD artist Kristin Hersh in support of her critically acclaimed new collection of writing Wyatt at the Coyote Palace. Hersh found fame in 4AD’s legendary Throwing Muses and has continued to receive worldwide acclaim as a solo artist and as part of 50 Foot Wave. Her solo and mostly-acoustic career spun off in 1994 with the release of Hips and Makers which became widely acclaimed and included Your Ghost a duet with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. Since then, Kristin has released a steady stream of solid and distinctly individual albums.

The Divine Comedy Friday 21 October, 8pm Tickets £27 advance / £31 on the door Ages 14+ (under 16s accompanied by an adult)

Kristin’s first book Paradoxical Undressing was described by Rolling Stone as “one of the top ten best rock memoirs ever written”. This special live show will consist of a selection of readings from Wyatt at the Coyote Palace alongside a live solo music set.

With their eagerly anticipated eleventh album Foreverland due for release September 2nd, The Divine Comedy have announced 18 UK & Irish dates this autumn.

The idea of the sea has cultural depth and political significance, mythic resonance and inherent music. This talk for SALT Festival will explore a variety of its meanings, including how it is intimately related to ideas of time. For Britain, the seashore has become a political borderline, as fixed and poisonous as water is not. The shoreline politics of UKIP are now part of our national shame. Modernity is also replaying the myth of the Fisher King, destroying ocean life for a holy grail of economic wealth. Jay Griffiths will look at ancient ideas of the ocean, and indigenous understandings of ocean vitality. Underneath everything, the oceans have their music: songlines of whales and dolphins, and Jay will also look at the marine rattlebag of the sheer beauty of the underwater world. Jay Griffiths is the author of Wild: An Elemental Journey and most recently Tristimania: A Diary of Manic Depression. 15

A free drama improvisation workshop open to all who want to practice being more “in the moment”, to laugh more, and to draw out the playful side of themselves. We’ll play ice-breaker and warm-up games, and practice skills at the heart of improvisation such as listening, making offer and ‘saying yes’. With no audience and no performance on the agenda, the atmosphere is accessible, fun and non-judgemental with the hope of stretching our creative muscles as we interact with each other. You may have some experience of drama or improv comedy or you may be a complete beginner. Either way is fine, you are most welcome.
