How to find Quarterhouse 22 What’s On
23
What is an arts centre for? When I was asked that recently, I had to think carefully about what Quarterhouse means to Folkestone. I hope this autumn season goes some way to answering that question. There are artists of every stripe on the following pages – experimenters, ranters, dreamers, jokers, songstresses, storytellers, protesters, some that paved the way and some that are just starting out. They are each coming to Folkestone to share a unique vision and talent. And this truly is a bumper crop.
Forced Entertainment present
Tomorrow’s Parties Friday 19 & Saturday 20 September, 7.30pm Tickets £10 / £8 concessions Suitable for ages 16+ Running time 80 mins approx International innovators Forced Entertainment’s performance imagines a multitude of futures. Two performers speculate about what tomorrow might bring. Exploring utopian and dystopian visions, science fiction scenarios, political nightmares and absurd fantasies, the audience is carried along on a flowing tide of possibilities and dreams. Tomorrow’s Parties is Forced Entertainment in intimate and comical mode – a playful, poignant and at times delirious look towards the future. The performance on Friday 19 July will include a post show discussion.
But it’s not all about them. It’s also about the people who come here to take part in workshops, meetings and community events, students on the School for Creative Start Ups, school groups taking part in Big Arts Day and ARTiculation, the young people who come every day for training sessions with Kent County Council’s community learning and skills programme.

I hope you will read this brochure and find something for you in it, and that you will feel inspired to come to Quarterhouse to see great artists, to feel part of your community and to nurture your own creativity. Creator of the Fun Palace idea Joan Littlewood (see p6), thought an arts centre should be a laboratory of fun and a university of the streets. I hope that some of her vision can be seen in this season.

With barely a word spoken, Joe looks back at his childhood home and traces its journey from idyllic seaside town to a community gripped by anarchy. Four men recall the dark expanses of the Yorkshire moors, sing together full-throated and bold, recall poignant memorials of being a boy and dance optimistically to the howling tones of Kate Bush. The energy of this brave new performance is not to be missed.
Part theatre, part gig, This Last Tempest is a sequel to The Tempest and begins where Shakespeare left off. Caliban and Ariel are left alone on the enchanted island, watching Prospero’s ship sail over the horizon and out of view.
McMaster’s all male, award-winning interpretation of Emily Bronte’s seminal text, re-visits the iconic landscapes and characters from Wuthering Heights and places them alongside the stories of the male performers. This re-imagined classic considers how almost 200 years after the book was published, the lives and aspirations of men are now different.
Using the magic of the words Prospero taught them, his former servants, the “savage” and the “airy spirit” are free to begin again. They sing and perform wild tempests. As the storms rage endlessly around them they conjure-up their own brave new world, with new rules for a new society – where spirits and monsters are people and inanimate things are alive.

David Rosenberg & Glen Neath
By George Brant Directed by Christopher Haydon With Lucy Ellinson
“You are invited to a lecture. You know that the subject is probably important and it would be useful to hear what the speaker has to say but you can’t keep your eyes open.
She’s a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot. She’s pregnant. Her career in the sky is over. Now, she sits in an air-conditioned trailer in Las Vegas flying remote-controlled drones over the Middle East. She struggles through surreal twelve hour shifts far from the battlefield – hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night.
You will fall asleep and you will dream.” Fiction is the second performance by Glen Neath and David Rosenberg using binaural sound and absolute darkness. It is an anxious journey through the sprawling architecture of our dreams and an exercise in empathy. Or it is an opportunity to get a 60 minute nap!
Grounded is a gripping, compulsive new play that flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence, targeting our assumptions about war, family, and what it is to be a woman.
Commissioned by the Cambridge Festival of Ideas, Cambridge Junction and Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival. Funded by Arts Council England. Box Office 01303 760 750

The Wind Rises Thursday 9 October
Rating: PG
After creating stunning films such as Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro the Studio Ghibli master-animator, Hayao Miyazaki, presents his final film. The Wind Rises follows the true story of Jiro, a man who dreams of building beautiful flying machines. But with the outbreak of war his wonderful flying machines become tools of war. Stunning animation and an epic story combine to make this a triumph of Japanese animation.
House + Fancy dress and discussion with horror film academic Thursday 30 October Rating: 15
Film at Quarterhouse
To honour the strangeness of this terrifying film join us for a post show discussion on why Asia is so good at horror from a horror film academic in fancy dress. No one knows horror better that the Japanese and House is no exception. The film follows a schoolgirl and her six classmates as they travel to the country home of her ailing aunt. Coming face to face with supernatural events the girls are devoured by the house, one by one. Influenced by the ideas of the director’s daughter, this experimental horror film has been held as one of cinemas most fantastical.

The 39 Steps screened at Folkestone Silver Screen Cinema Thursday 27 November Rating: U
Special Offer: Book any 5 films for the price of 4! Exit Through The Gift Shop + Zine and live graffiti art Thursday 11 September Recommended rating: 15 For our first film of the new season we have invited along a couple of street artists to paint their own masterpiece live whilst we screen the film. We will also be inviting you to contribute to a limited edition zine (check the website for details). For fans of documentaries, such as Super-Size Me, this is, as Banksy describes it, “basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And Failed.” Graffiti artist Banksy is a world famous man of mystery. His street art has been spotted across the globe from Rio to Rome and London to Los Angeles, but still no one knows who Banksy really is. Exit through the Gift Shop follows an amateur filmmaker in his quest to locate and befriend the notorious artist.
Box Office 01303 760 750
The 39 Steps will be screened at Folkestone Silver Screen Cinema to compliment the aesthetics of this gorgeous 1930’s film. The year is 1914 and Europe is on the brink of war. Spies are everywhere. When Richard Hannay finds a young woman dead in his flat he is suddenly the most wanted man in Britain. But he is innocent, so why would anyone want to frame him. Directed by legend of cinema Alfred Hitchcock, this adaptation of John Buchan’s famous novel is little short of a masterpiece.
Upstream Color + Sound art installation by Jon Law Thursday 18 December Rating: 12A
Elmina + Q&A with director Doug Fishbone Thursday 25 September Recommended rating: 15
For this screening we have invited one of our favourite artists, Jon Law, to install an artwork somewhere in Quarterhouse. We don’t know what it is yet but it will be amazing. In Shane Carruth’s intense feature film Upstream Color two people are drawn together by an unknown parasite. Life becomes illusion in this psychological drama that won worldwide acclaim upon its release in 2013. As well as being visually engrossing, Upstream Color has a soundtrack that is overwhelming in the best way possible.
Artist comedian Doug Fishbone will join us in a special discussion after we screen his satirical masterpiece Elimina. Born out of the artist’s fascination with Nollywood cinema, despite the film’s actual location in Ghana, Elmina pulls Fishbone towards an interesting experimentation in collaboration and co-authorship. Scripted and filmed by a major Ghanaian film company, with a major Ghanaian cast, the only noticeable intervention is the introduction of Fishbone himself (a white American) as the films lead. Through this simple gesture the artist tests the audience’s relationship to cinema and fiction.
No-Wave Cinema Club No-Wave Cinema Club aim to bring the very best independent cinema to Folkestone. The No-Wave team has also lined up a series of events and cinema plus activities including a Q&A session with Doug Fishbone, workshops, art installations and more. No-Wave Cinema club is supported by Film Hub South East with National Lottery funds distributed by The BFI Film Audience Network.

Star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Have I Got News for You and QI is back with a brand new show for 2014.
Internationally acclaimed Canadian stand-up Craig Campbell brings his brand new show ‘Thrilling Mic Hunt’ to Quarterhouse following a hugely successful autumn run.
After being knocked up like a 1950’s teenager Shappi missed 2013, but now she is back. Reflecting on the good things, she celebrates her haphazard, zigzag towards her dreams. She introduces us to friends, family and total strangers who have helped her on her personal Yellow Brick Road.
Craig has supported Frankie Boyle on two sell-out national tours, has performed smokin’ sets on Dave’s One Night Stand (Dave), Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three), Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC One) and has more recently been touring the critically acclaimed 2012 Edinburgh show ‘Return of the Lumberjacks’.
Feisty, flirty and effortlessly funny, she handles every subject with a razor sharp wit, softened only by her deliciously dizzy delivery and endless charm.
A formidable force, Craig never fails to impress with his high octane performances and hilarious anecdotes.
