Research indicates that the collective annual turnover of the members is in excess of $150bn per year, and they directly employ almost 350,000 staff across the world. The fleet of specialist vessels operated by those members accounts for some 4% of the world’s shipping tonnage, and IMCA members deliver some of the most important elements of the global economy - not just oil and gas. In light of the evolution of our membership demographic (see diagrams), Council felt that a strategic review of IMCA’s direction was essential to ensure that the Association anticipated the future needs of members and set high level aspirations and goals for that future, whilst continuing to respond and deliver to the current needs of the industry. The strategic review process we used to develop this “over the horizon planning” involved taking opinion and inputs from a wide section of the membership (primarily those contributing through committees and workgroups) to provide feedback as to what IMCA did well, what we did not so well, and what we should be doing in the future. We have conducted workshops to develop and define our aspirations into a “vision” for the future. The process has then been focused to consolidate the results into a working document, re-defining our core values and principles in order for them to be communicated to our members, our business partners, our clients and the general public; thus raising the public profile of IMCA and building up pride in being part of it.
remote systems & rov ROV TRAINING
The Remote Systems & ROV Management Committee has been actively discussing how they can best address skills shortages within the ROV Image: QSTAR ROV Training Center industry. Issues that have been looked at include the possibility of training in a “contextual experience environment” – that is, training using real scenarios with a real ROV on an actual vessel, but not actually offshore. The ROVMC is keen to encourage and stimulate crossindustry collaboration to develop appropriate solutions to encourage both new personnel into the industry and for career development of existing personnel. The C&T Committee’s Personnel and Skills Shortages Workgroup will also feed into this work. NH
UMBILICAL & TETHER REPORTS
A number of members have submitted ROV umbilical/tether damage/failure reports, following the development of a form intended to capture causes and issues. The data collected can be used to all members’ benefit in identifying historical failure or damage trends and developing possible corrective actions. A summary of data submitted so far is being prepared for consideration by the ROV committee early in 2014. Further reports are of course welcome. All information enclosed in the form will be kept in confidence and remain anonymous. An information note drawing members’ attention to the form has been issued as IMCA R 03/13, and the form itself is available on the IMCA website for download. Completed forms can be sent to imca@imca-int.com. NH
OCEANOLOGY INTERNATIONAL 2014
IMCA is a supporting organisation of the Oceanology International trade show which will be held on 11-13 March 2014 at the ExCel centre in London. IMCA has a stand at the show where you will be able to come along to meet and chat with members of the technical team and secretariat. On 12 March, in conjunction with the event, IMCA’s Remote Systems & ROV Management Committee and Competence & Training Core Committee will be holding a joint afternoon seminar: ROV Training - an international perspective. The intent is to see how contractors and suppliers in the different regions have addressed the need for training new ROV personnel. The event will be free and open to all but, registration will be required. Please contact events@imca-int.com if you are interested in attending. NH
