LETTER Director’s Message Dear Parents, Students & Community Members, Doubt, an irritating and uncomfortable state for students, provokes inquiry and investigation. Conventional wisdom tells us that without the willingness to take risks, including the risk of failure, nothing of significance would ever be discovered. This is the reason that we strive for students to be independent thinkers and risk takers. It's alright to try and fail, because that's when investigation continues. Just something to think about !

Math: The students have been working with American money problems and we are also introducing Euros. The important part of this learning is to understand “skip counting” and how to start from the largest coins. Encourage your child to count money when you are out and paying for items. When sitting and waiting at a restaurant is another excellent opportunity to lay your change on the table and have your child count it. Reminder: Students go to computers (technology training) on Monday and Wednesday. They have PE (physical education) on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Thanks, Mrs. Iles

Lilo Schmolcke is 7 years old. Her favourite movie is Ice Age 3 . She likes to collect toys, books, colors and movies. Blue (and more blue) is her favourite color. Her dad and mom and brother Tom complete her family. Gym is her favourite sport. A dream vacation for Lilo would be camping in Manila.

RAZ KIDS

I wrote to Raz-Kids customer service in regards to students loosing stars and this was part of their reply: Thank you for contacting Learning A-Z. We regret to hear some of your students have experienced difficulties with Raz-Kids. The most common cause of missing or lost stars is someone else logging into a student's account and spending stars in the Raz Rocket. As the teacher, you can also give bonus stars to any student to replace missing or lost stars: I will have the students choose new passwords this week and assure them that they must keep it a secret.

Middle School Reading Nora completing her response journal, writing about Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury Both Middle School and Secondary students are working on becoming more independent readers through the use of Literature Circles. In small groups students read and make notes on a novel which the whole group is reading, the notes help them to contribute to the upcoming discussion in which everyone participates and contributes their ideas. Students may also bring reading home and spend more time on enrichment activities in the classroom. This also gives readers the opportunity to recognize that reading involves making connections with the text, including visualization, questioning the text and monitoring comprehension strategies. One aim of Literature Circle is to encourage students to read more independently, but I find it allows students to experience how literature can enrich their lives. For example, Secondary students are reading the novel 1984 by George Orwell, which ties in neatly with our History Class covering the causes and effects of World War II in this respect the novel echoes the creation of the totalitarian states created by Mussolini, Stalin and Hitler.

A Life in

by Emma Ca Malta Mosta Dome

About me and where I live! My name is Emma Casagrande, I live in Malta, I come from Argentina but my passport says I am Brazilian. I am nine years old. I used to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That is the capital city. Then I moved to Dili, East Timor, Timor Leste that is in Indonesia, we moved there because my mom found work there. Now I am in Malta. I came to Malta on June, vacation, 2013. My mom found work in Libya but we are in Malta because it is very close to Libya. My family members are my mom, Albertina, my dad, Silvio and my sister Eloisa. My favorite thing about Malta is, I like the hiking and trekking places and the mountains are the best place to go. I like this because I like running down the hills and I like to collect rocks; you see I really can’t stop moving even in class! Also the view is beautiful! In Malta there is a very interesting thing, the temples! There are so many temples in Malta. The temples are about thousands of years old and even more! The temples are big, huge and little rocks put up on each other. The temples were found by two men they wanted to keep it a secret but their secret was revealed. If you were a tourist I would tell you to go see the amazing buildings like the towers, some of the towers are from the history of the Knights of Malta. One of the towers is called The Red Tower it is near to a harbour that has a ferry that brings you to an island called Gozo. You should also go see Gozo.

The Temples In the world there are magnificent free standing temples, but the temples in Malta are the oldest free standing temples in the world. Every temple in Malta where found by accident

The Hypogeum The Hypogeum is a temple under the ground. It is in Malta and we discovered many new things with it. The Sleeping Lady was found in the hypogeum was found in a pit. There are also lots of very interesting rooms in the hypogeum like there was this room where there are stairs that stop and under it is a deep pit. Scientists think it was to trap robbers. Then there is a room entering the temple that scientist think they threw bones in there. The best room in the Hypogeum was the “Holy of Holies.
