Personal statement My mother is an excellent environmental engineer, and years of her subtle influence on me prompted me to fancy exploring the link between man and environment. Luckily, I joined a mature team and had the opportunity to participate in some eco-planning projects. By observing the team’s work, I came to realize that architecture plays an important role in facilitating the communication between man and environment—people construct and use architecture to keep in touch with the environment, and interact with it through architecture to improve life quality. The importance of architecture to human civilization has fascinated me deeply, and I want to embark on my exploration of the triune links between man and architecture, man and environment, and architecture and environment by studying architecture. For my undergraduate education, I majored in Architecture at Huaqiao University. After finishing my fifth year at college, I took a gap year instead of rushing into new studies or career. During my gap year, I travelled 5 provinces, 12 cities and 8 villages and towns along the eastern coast of China, and 6 villages and towns in 3 provinces and 4 cities in western China to experience the very different northern and southern cultures of a country. I also toured many countries in Europe such as London and Edinburgh, and the former East Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt) which have undergone socialist revolution. I was surprised at Europe’s protection of the previous cityscape as well as the harmony between modern architectures and traditional architectures. Among all the countries in Europe, the UK not only has the longest history and a well-conserved historic district, but also has a systematic theoretical system of architectural teaching, which has eventually led to my decision to study in the UK. The hardships of studying abroad discouraged me at one point. However, traveling in China and many European countries made me realize that the social environment would fixate people’s thinking. In this regard, studying in the UK will be an effective way for me to broaden my horizons. University of Edinburgh, one of the most famous academic institutes in the world, will be a good place. I know that your MArch Architecture program aims to bring innovation to the traditional architecture design methodologies, in order to reach the balance among architectures, environment and people, which is also my goal. I will continue my exploration of regional architecture while studying in Edinburgh. After returning to China upon graduation, I will start from changing my hometown of Jinan, a city with nearly a thousand years of Confucian culture, to promote the development of local tourism by designing buildings with regional characteristics. By doing so, I hope to let my grandparents’ generation find familiar places in this rapidly developing city and enhance the function of architecture in transmitting culture.

Relevant knowledge & training During the five-year undergraduate study, I had many first-time experiences: for the first time, I made full use of the mathematical knowledge I acquired in basic education and my mathematical logical thinking ability to develop a proposal methodically; for the first time, I left my hometown in northern China to investigate the architectures in southern China such as the ancient Gucuo on the Gulangyu Island and the traditional Hakka dwellings in Fujian Province, which made me realize the diverse architectural styles of different places in China and how the buildings in different places integrated the regional cultural, geographical and climatic features to achieve unity with the environment; for the first time, I designed a shelter and independently completed a functional structure, feeling the glamour of architectural art and learning about its utmost attention to functionality; for the first time, I participated in the reconstruction of an old town. During my research, I found that the renovation design of old towns in southern China and northern China was very similar. Most of the renovations were limited to the architectural exteriors regardless of the regional distinctions of the old towns. Fortunately, I was allowed to carry out my urban renewal project in Quanzhou, a city that had not yet been fully developed, so I had the opportunity to explore the regional urban renewal and design ideas suitable for local residents. In the various professional design projects in which I participated, I brought the feminine part of my personality into full play, taking into account not only the dimensions, spaces and colors, but also different atmospheres, materials and even textures to create unique psychological experiences. All these have enabled me to gradually blossom into a real constructor from a mere bystander in the construction industry. In my fifth year at college, I chose to intern at GMP and got thoroughly involved in the threemonth Shanghai Sanlin Urban Planning Competition project from the creation of concept and models to the facade design and the final proposal presentation. As the project assistant, I followed the team in the practice of regional architecture. Firstly, we drew on Shanghai’s traditional alley style, street culture and food culture, and abstracted local culture into architectural symbols and functions. Secondly, faced with many problems such as different urban densities in different times, different requirements of line rate and stringent fire codes, I also followed the experienced architects throughout the problem-solving process, from which I learned a great deal. Eventually, our project won the first place in the competition, which indicated that architecture in China need to be regionally distinctive. Regional architecture may be the major trend in China’s construction industry, so I have planned to devote myself to regional architectural design in China in the future.

PURSUING HARMONY In the past, traditional Chinese philosophy emphasize Tao which means the harmonious unity of humans and nature. Under the guidance of Tao, Chinese traditional structures conformed to the contours of the land and sati sfied people's pursuit of spirit. However affected by industrialization and centralization of contemporary of china, local designers incline to ignore the complexity brought about by individual and natural difference. They single-mindedly impose a simple order onto everything. In such case, the diversity of building has been lost and ideas have become single.. In conclusion, I believe that individuality is the key of nowadays architecture. Combining spiritual needs with n ature as Taoist thought could stimulate people’s mind and infuse the space with plentiful possibilities.

01 [ Display With Producing ] An innovation show in carving factory

Factory Renovation Individual Work Summer 2016 WTutor:Zhong Zhenwei

With urbanization, the factory that used to be located on the edge of the city gradually became the new center of the city. Due to industrial pollution and other issues, these old factories have gradually been abandoned. At the same time, with industrialization, the traditional handicrafts gradually disappear due to the problems of low efficiency. This project is the transformation of abandoned stone carving factory. Firstly,stone carving processing are divided into three ways, manual processing, semi-manual processing, automatic processing. Secondly, Combining the flow of goods transport, the production process is re-planning. What is more, the production links , which are the most representative one, are extracted, and combine tourist routes and production lines to enable visitors to visit and experience different stone carving processes while visiting the stone carving exhibition. Visitors will go through different production processes and stone carving exhibition. Through sight design, the visitors can compare different production processes and products, and have an in-depth understanding of the irreplaceable manual processing. At the end of the tour, visitors will make their own products as designers and producer.

02 [ Redefining Campus Life ] Communal center in campus Activity Center Individual Work Fall 2015 Tutor:Yue Cen

With the development of society and the rapid growth of enrollment in schools, campus activities are diversified. This trend not only reflects the increase of venues, but also requires various sizes and different levels of privacy to meet their needs. This project takes into account the current lack of privacy of students dormitory because of the limited area. And the limited area of the teacher apartment causes many functions to be unable to satisfy. This design use concept of communal center as reference, sharing kitchen, activity room, studio . At the same time, a series of small stages are designed on the facade of the building to satisfy the desire of students who are suppose to express themselves. In addition, due to the problem of base height difference, the project takes into account the change of the terrain, and combine with topographic changes, to solve tearthwork balance adjustment, which enables the project have a maximum operability.

03 [ From External To Inner Contact ] Contradictions Between Traditional Space And Modern Activities Urban Renewal Team Work Contribution: Conceptual Design, Technical Drawings&Representation Fall 2016 Tutor:Yue Cen With the development of the city, the old neighbourhood is gradually marginalized by the city. At the same time, due to the construction of multi-storey buildings, the traditional street space is gradually destroyed. Past close neighbourhood relations have faded away. In addition, new means of transport are emerging. This makes the contradiction between man and car particularly evident in the old streets. This project is located in the old town of Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. In order to tackle the issue of marginalization and depression formed by Industrial development in the old block, the vitality of the community was stimulated by a series of the strategies. 1.The employment and trade would be promoted by building the new shopping mall2. Pedestrian was separated from the bicycle and pedestrian mixed road by the corridors among the buildings. 3,The corridors was extended into the inside of the buildings to from the variety transition space and the relationship between public and private space was enhanced. The design is the reflection of the brilliant city: high efficiency ,convenience and comprehensive service and the retrospect of the close relationship among traditional streets and lanes space.

Digital Design & Digital Fabrication Team Work Contribution: Build, Technical drawing & Concept Summer 2017 Tutor:Lu Jiaxing Mathematically, geometry model “Enneper Surface� is redesigned asymmetrically and the surface space which is made on-site , complete the possibility of spatial variability. Geometrically, the asymmetrical design corresponds to the symmetry of modernism. Manufacturing, non-standard digital manufacturing corresponds to the modernist assembly line standards. In the current context of technology and design, we put forward the challenge of modernism and criticism, while complete the difference and aesthetic (elegance) exploration in this space text.

This project is located in Sanlin area of Pudong New District in Shanghai. Sanlin, situated in the southwest of Pudong New District, covers an area of 34.19 sq.km, with Huangpu River on the west, Chuanyang River on the north, Beicai village and Kangqiao village on the east, and Pujiang village in Minhang District on the south. Functionally, the vision of Sanlin is to create a small village by the Huangpu River that features high greening rate, dense water sysem and integration of tradition and modernity.

The site design references the old Sanlin Village and extends its scale and fabric. The small green village is embedded in the cent that is higher on both sides and lower in the middle, thus create a lively skyline and a delicate and comfortable cascading human s
