MANUFACTURE INCUBATOR

HABITATSCAPE ——EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANDSCAPE AND RESIDENTIAL

1ST STREET VIADUCT DEVELOPMENT, LOS ANGELES

MANUFACTURE INCUBATOR

SITE ANALYSIS

Our project is a manufacturing building withmultiple plubic function, like exhibition, education, also retail. The site is in the northside of our neighborhood Bronzeville in Chicago, close to the north plaza and a main entrance to our neighborhood, which is helpful to our loading and delivry.

PRIMAL CONCEPT MODEL

Thourgh this project, we’re going to build a dynamic balance in our neighborhood. The making place could supply commercial, industry service, maket, connect exhibition with recreation and entertainment, collaborate education with school.

FORM GENERATION program evolution

The concept based on a series of evolution happened on the building. We wanted to make the maximum flexibility of this building to meet general manufacturing needs, so a 18,000SF workshop and a 20,000SF LAB were decided as two basic programs in the manufacturing domain. We noticed that the LAB is relatively more individual than workshop, since there will be big machines in the space, also crane could be hung on the roof. So we considered the possible load of the upper level could be inappropriate for LAB not workshop. So, we rotated the upper bar to keep a potential upper space for LAB, the left manufacturing part acts the role of spindle. Then we dropped it down along the wall, thus the private zone in manfacturing domain was naturally rised to keep its privacy from public space. And there could be certain connection between two sides of the wall.

property evolution

When we considered the program evolution of the building, actually it always kept conformity with the arrangement of property. It started from a semi-public bar with a shared social space in the middle, which is the main space for makers to communicate with each other, also to take part in different activities to get a better cooperation relationship. So the center semi-public space was decided to be a key connection in the building. After the rotation of the upper level, the basic arrangement of property has also been settled. Two bars now show a clear hierarchy of property——the bottom bar as a semi-public zone, connecting both two terminals of the upper bar which are the private zone and the public zone, meanwhile in the center, the semi-public space acts as the link between the public space and private space——that also effecting interior circulation, which exactly reflect the circulatory manufacturing process designed in this building. The circulation was established based on two elevators, which also helped joint the center structure with branches.

shape evolution

The shape followed the evolutions happened in program and property. The manufacturing domain as a stable one rooted on the ground, while the public domain is more flexible and creative in shape . In the manufacturing domain, there are large enough workshop and LAB, with a series of offices and studios, making the building be a suitable place for most manufacturing companies. While the building could not only be used by certain company, but also could be used by two or more companies at the same time. They could be symbiotic or unrelated, since there are some small zones in each level——in the third level and fourth level, they’re formed by the void, which clearly divide 4 zones surrounding it, while the large space in workshop and LAB already provided enough flexibility in dimension, nature lighting, circulation, connection with other programs and so on—— could be used by different contractors, also enough social spaces like corridor, corner, lounge, public conference for people to communicate with each other to get different information or advises.

PRIMAL CONCEPT MODEL

In the primal concept model, the transparent bar lightly cover on the bottom solid one, showing the role of the bottom bar——as a stable basement of whole building supplying needed energy, production, accumulation. These two bars show a distinct difference in material, while the space in the transparent bar is separated by the height, the whole building has a obvious intention to find a way to keep balance in those three different space. While the manufacturing process needs them to connect with each other, circulation and the center structure were tried to realize that. To realize the goal, we try to create a circulatory process like MOBIUS in our building, which going through manufacturing to retail and exhibition, then getting feed back from visitors and clients, gathering all information and conversation to improve production and innovate new one, which will be manufactured later and repeat the process. Hence the whole manufacturing process could be continuously operated by itself inside this building, which make the building become an innovation incubator that could be generally used by one or more companies, since any of them could participate into a appropriate step in the process. While the multi-functional hall in the middle of building could trigger a lot activities bringing effective inspiration and active impact to manufacturing and business here.

CIRCULATION CONCEPT MODEL

THE WALL -- THE INTERFACE

BUILD THE BOUNDARY, BREAK THE BOUNDARY

Firstly, the interface acts as the boundary of manufacturing domain and other public domains, hence a mixed used circulation along the wall will be naturally formed, even columns and rooms could be set along the wall. Then the lounge as the gap between manufacturing domain and public domain in the center of two bars, becoming the exit for things smoothly pass through two bars among themwhole building. Thus, the intersection space become the big corner bringing manufacturing to public, also public to manufacturing, which broken the boundary and built connection

LOUNGE & BOOK BAR

The center structure here concentrate a highest density as a shared social space by all users of this building. It is composed by two parts, each of them connect both branches and center, also, we can say, public zone and private zone. There is certain common sense here, people won’t intentionally broke into each others’ domain, instead, they communicate with each other in the center space (multi-functional hall, lounge, book bar, entertainment room), friendly into another domain with permit or mission. So we follow the basicMdefinition of each property, creating a good environment for conversation happened at the same time.

PLAN & CIRCULATION

The multi-functional hall as a central shared space, used by makers as storage space and carrying space normally, while sometime exhibition needs more space, there could be temporary exhibition in the hall, or open lecture or vedio as special events. At these time, the multi-functioinal hall bring visitors and memberships into the manufacturing domain instead of only in the upper lounge. Also career fair would be hold on the hall, other companies and organizations would also come here. Makers could have an overall understanding about the firm through production in retail and the show room, also exhibition, to make their own choice. Since the circulation from multi-functional hall to retail, show room, and exhibition is excatly direct and smooth, this would be an oppotunity to establish cooperative relationship with them.

THE CHANNEL

The channel round the whole building from as a complete circle. It starts from the sloped beam which supporting the slope glass. Then go through the top of the second floor, to the top of the upper bar. After going along the wall, then go down and round the bottom, finally back to the sloped beam. In the whole process, the channel not only play the role of ornament, but also the necessary structure parts of the building. The channel likes a loop which hoop the building, making a stable sense. Also, the interface here also transfer the channel from outside to inside, from roof to ground, showing the specific situation the wall in.

HABITATSCAPE ——EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANDSCAPE AND RESIDENTIAL

CONCEPT

In our society, the common type of residential, landscape (Landscape, Plaza and Terrace, etc.) only as an affiliated part of residential. But we believe, in next generation, Landscape will become more and more important. Since with the development of society, most of people already satisfied with the place where they living. But the stress of working and the density of the city, people desire to “Breath”, they want to touch the nature, what’s more, they want living in the nature. So the old “Landscape” is not far enough.

Our project wants to create a “new form of landscaperesidential”, which have a variety of forms and highly accessibility. We change the role of landscape and residential, make landscape as main part. Landscape not only as infrastructure, but also as new form residential even multifunction place.

Exchanged Situation: landscape designed basing on the urban grid → urban grid based on the ladsacpe context

The strategy of our project is layout three grids: City context, Landscape, Residential.

City context gird is form a residential area in Chicago, it will change based on where the site is.

Landscape grid is generated by City context. We treat Landscape as a place where people can getting together, have activities and exchange information.

Residential grid is from our case study of Habitat 67, this is one of feature that we interested.

We considered the diverse living needs of the 60’s, 70’s, and 90’s, created a single apartment, family housing, townhouse with courtyard, hillside terrace house, etc.
