MASTERPLAN 1: 250 PROJECT BRIEF

The project on axis introduces a new axis and grid system to the existing site as a tool to disrupt the symmetrical plan and negative connotative meaning of institutional architecture. Based on the historical background of Kew asylum, one of the most key original design intentions is to create a welcoming and harmonious atmosphere to the asylum including the natural lighting, landscape and cross ventilation, which was not manifested in the Kew asylum. Leading to the idea to create the new axis and grid system to achieve what was forgotten in the past and educate what once there Through a series of deconstruction, readaptation and reorientation of existing fragments, the architecture unfolds to the surroundings and public. The architecture are aligned to the new axis and grid due to different purpose, which spontaneously disrupted the original symmetrical plan and alienation inherent of institutional architecture

The project on Axis introduces a new axis and grid system to the site as a tool to disrupt the symmetrical plan and negative connotative meaning of institutional architecture. The idea is inspired by the key original idea behind the Kew asylum, which is to create a welcoming space to the surroundings. In order to achieve these forgotten quality, there are serious of deconstruction and readaptation of original architecture, the new architecture are aligned to new axis system which disrupt the original symmetrical plan and alienation inherent of institutional architecture As you can see from the Masterplan, the new grid system is created due to different purposes, including the solar axis to north, connectivity axis in the centre for circulation , and the landscape axis aligned with the Yarra river that provide the view to the surrounding nature. The architecture is aligned to axis due to different functions meanwhile the new axis and grid system now informed the demolition of the original kew asylum. It also generates the new form of architecture languages, greenery area and gathering space for the site which you can see from the layer diagrams. Move on to the readaptation of fragements and architectural languages. In order to resist the negative symbolic meaning, the original openings on the side are reoriented and exaggerated in order to overpower the original centralised entryway and foyer area of Kew asylum. Besides, as people get into the memorial museum, the original wall is now demolished and reconstructed as light tunnel to north to direct the light into the space, meanwhile, these sloped wall framed the original tower in asymmetrical way which against the original centralised position of the tower. In the view of art studio, the existing fragments are reused as an operable facade or lightweight structure, for the art studio and the threshold space. The lighting for the interior can be adjusted during the day. Also, the original motifs and ornament now becomes the exterior cladding and structural frame. The intersection between the new grid system are used as threshold space, the aim is to blur the boundaries between internal and external, with the extended internal floor tile, vegetations and operbale wall to encourage interactions. Then the external view also shows the juxtaposition of the new architectural languages and the original architecture. The interior view of the art studio shows the solution of the linear long corridor and segregated wards in original asylum, here I remove the original wall but keep the doors and windows. Then, redesigned them as the partition and furniture to hang up the artwork. Besides, the original windows are redesigned as double functioning interior furniture for both seating and flexible facade for the art studio. The section shows the different architectural languages and the solution to the existing ground where there were more intimate and private space for reading, meeting, and also the formal space with the light tunnel or flexible structure for idea lighting. Also the more active and flexiblee space that encourages the social interaction To summarise, the On axis is aiming to utilise the existing fragments and creating new axis system as leverage to disrupt the negative connotative meaning of institutional architectural topology

STUDIO REFLECTION TYPOLOGY

THE GROUND

ADAPTIVE REUSE

ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGES

STUDIO REFLECTION The Kew asylum is considered as typical instituional architecture with elements that has negative connotative meanings, in this project, these elements are being reused in different scale in order to create a new architectural topology which is welcoming, active and unfold to the surroundings. Especially the long corridors and openings are used as the tool to break though the enclosed institutional architecture with several threshold and space in-between. Resulting in the community centre that encourages the social interaction, no segreagtion between social class. The main goal is to explore the potential of these elements, and use them as leverage to create a new community centre

2022 - Semester 1 - Bachelor Studio

Existing fabric of the kew asylum has several characteristics including lots of vegetations and greenary space around the site, the different types of grid system in the surrounding neighbourhood. The aim in this project is to unfold the project to all of these surroundings, the strategies including extending the grid system, introducing more greenary area, offset the river into the site. All of these design strategies are aiming to create the site that is welcoming to all of the surrounding features. The project involved several threshold area and larger gathering space with the greenary space to translate this quality of Kew into the project.

Understanding the existing fragments and its connotative meaning is important in these tasks, we shift from the larger scale planning to the actural architecture which requires lots of attention to the ornament, materiality, spatial quality and atmosphere of the existing kew asylum. It’s important to find a way to balance out the new architectural languages and the original one since the new should not be completely irrelevant to the original architecture. By testing the different strategies to deal with the small fragments, the result shows there are lots of potentials behind this institutional architecture to become a vivid and welcoming space even though the asylum architecture is being claimed to have lots of negative connotative meanings.

THE ANTI-INSTITUTION V3

For the overall architectural languages, it should not only consider about the aesthetic aspect but also the function of the space. The architectural languages might be different for spaces, in this case, the art studio might need the southern light instead of the direct sunlight; the operable facade might be useful for the threshold space in order to encourage the social interaction between people; the memorial museum should still has some formal and classical languages to educate people about the historical background of Kew asylum. All of these considerations should manifest in the architectural languages.

The negative symbolic meaning of the institutional architecture can be regarded as the combinations of different architectural fragments. In the case of Kew asylum, the linear corridor, symmetrical layout, segregated living space, these elements can be used as leverage to develope a new architectural topology that is more welcoming. Starting from the smaller scale of architectural fragments to redapt provides the opportunities to understand the topology of instutional architecture. Then, shifting to the masterplanning scale to develop the overall concept behind the project challenges the ability to express the design concept in abstracted but precise way. At the final stage, the overall design concept is manifest in the architecture languages and adaptive reuse strategies which makes the idea working with the whole project from detailed architectureal fragments, to the overall masterplanning. For the project on axis, the lighting as a tool to design the architecture can be further developed with more critical thinking, it’s not only about the light into the interior space but also about how the space should be functioning with the light. Also, the idea of bringing the darkness to contrast the bright light space is a fascinating idea to explore further for the architectural languages and also the graphic representations. One of the most valuable thing from the learning experience from the studio is to always has an clear intentions and motives behind every design moves, thinking the project critically and how to express the idea in an precise and efficient way. The institutional architecture has lots of potentials to be readapted, even with the elements that has negative connotative meaning, it’s about how we use our critical thinking and design strategies to alter it and readapt them to the new architectural topology.

REFLECTION How an Exposition Expose Itself Jewish Museum, Daniel Libeskind

As the development of mass production in the Architecture field is accelerating in the decades, the standardized products are failed to present distinctive value to society. Considering the architecture can be a strong communication device to create the dialect between observers, society, and history. The connotation and symbolic meanings should become the dominants rather than the physiological level or primary denotational function. To maximize the translate the symbolic meaning to the public, every detail should be curated base on the connotational meaning which sometimes will overtake the primary function. Then, the architecture is not only exposit an physical space but the narrator and exposition itself with the complex images of civilization and value of culture In the case of the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind, architecture implemented a radical, formal, and conceptual expressive tool to present Jewish history during the Holocaust. The connotation function becomes dominant compares to the primary physiological function to express feelings of absence, emptiness, and invisibility, expressions of the disappearance of the Jewish Culture. It was the act of using the form as a means of narrative and emotion providing visitors with an immersive experience. The form is taken from the abstracted Jewish Star of David and then directly extruded from the lines between locations of historical events. The void and the notion of the absence of Jew in Germany are represented by empty spaces which are created by the voids between the lines which translate the uncanny feeling internally while the strong contrast of darkness against the sliver of light from the linear void on concrete facade emphasizes the moment of hope and exaltation. As a storyteller itself, the design of The Jewish Museum is driven by the connotation function to represent the naked reality of the culture and history through the symbolized expression including the sharpness, violet lines, emptiness, and the wounded form to mirror the image of Jewish culture.

REFLECTION THEATRE AND LIBRARY DESIGN

Taking the existing floor plan of the kew asylum to develope the theatre design challenges our group to maximise the potential of the existing fabric. It’s important to pay attention to the details of the existing such as the wall type, porprotion of openings, the floor tiles and the original connotative meanings behind these elements. It’s quite an efficient strategy to using the existing fragments, in this case the long transversal corridor to break through the interior space. Resulting lots of threshold space which makes the interior space unfold to the surroundings. Also it’s important to have a clear motives behind every design decisions, it has to have something to do with the original kew asylum. This task help us to understand the existing fabric and the opportunities behind the architectural fragments

TASK 09 SITE STUDY GROUP MEMBER: HAOTIAN CHI S3883114

The section design in this task is not only about a technical drawing to show the interior space but also about the narrative that we want to express in our project. The section should be expressive and relevant to the overall concept. It’s handy to start with the general idea and then move on to the finer details in this task

REFLECTION

SITE STUDY AND MASTERPLAN

By evaluating the surrounding fabric, it’s important for the project to involve the characteristics from the neighbourhood as a community centre. A community centre should be welcoming to the surrounding residents and embracing the landscape. The site study provides the potential solution to the existing fabric and gives the initial idea of the possible programes in the project, which is to bring the river to the site as a tool to make a community that is embraced by nature. Also the existing grid is extended into the project for the connectivity

TASK 11 MASTERPLANNING MASSING STUDY

The masterplanning is challenging at the first since there are lots of details and existing fabric we need to consider. It’s important to find a way to generate a overall concept, and then think about how the details can also express the same concept, such as the program planning, the circulations, how we deal with the topography of the existing ground and etc.

REFELCTION MASSING STUDY The architectural form is not only about extruding the form from the two-dimensional plan directly, it’s also need lots of thoughts and imaginations about how the form can express the overall concept. Also, different form should be considered for different function of the space such as the swimming pool can be outdoor along the waterway since the concept is introducing the waterway into the site. Another important thing is to have a atitude towards the existing buildings, are they going to be demolished and are they going to integrated with the new architecture. There should be some solutions to the demolished architecture in this task.

PROJECT BRIEF

The project riverfront community absorbs the surrounding grid system and urban fabric to define the new axis for reorientation, adaptation and program planning of architecture. The main strategy is to reorient and align the architecture to different axis due to different purpose in order to disrupt the original symmetrical plan and alienation inherent of institutional architecture. As an result, the intersection between the existing grid creates the new complex grid system encourages the interaction between different community and the hybridization of programs.

PROJECT EXPLAINATION

THE WATERWAY AS THE HARVEST FACILITIES FOR THE SENSORY GARDENS AND THE PLANTS NURSURY

Start with the concept, The project absorbing the surrounding grid system and urban fabric to define the new axis for reorientation, adaptation and program planning of architecture. By looking at the existing neighborhood, the river and main junction of kew is directly offset into the project took over the front part of project in order to reminisce the historical background of kew asylum and to expose to the great nature. Then, the pink multi-directional path in master plan with the curved waterway disrupts the symmetrical plan and as a tool to reaching out to the surrounding in multi direction. The most important concept in the project is the grid system of neighborhood is extended and absorbed to create a new grid system for the project, including the radiate grid, rigid grid and landscape topology. These grid system generate 3 main axis for the project meanwhile the architecture are aligned and oriented to these axis due to different purpose. The yellow buildings and openings are aligned to solar axis for northern sunlight. On the connectivity axis, there are several new and reused structure for social program that created several public gathering spaces for community. Also, the outdoor recreational area and sensory gardens, are located along the landscape axis to the river view As a result, these reorientation and new structure informed by the new system spontaneously disrupted the original central symmetrical axis. At the same time this also informed the demolish part of old asylum and gives the idea of new massing study. The intersection between different grid system , which generate opportunities. Including the new facility like plants nursery aligned to the solar axis, the memorial museum on the junction which unfold to public from every direction reminiscing the old tower of asylum in a scaled down way, Or used as the large gathering space for community. looking back to the previous work I’ve done, the theatre design and renders, I’m always trying to explore the idea of reorientation and unfold to public to disrupt the symmetry and unfold to public as you can see here. Therefore, in the renders, you can also see the redesign of original roof of asylum and orientation of buildings to different axis. The second one shows the new building on the solar axis functioning as the plants nursury while the waterway became the facility to harvest the greenery area. As i mentioned, the intersection point became the gathering space for public Then the last one shows the original structure of asylum is scaled down as the pavilion to reminiscing what once there but with different symbolic meaning Overall, the community centre is defined by the hybridization of domestic grid system and important features to counteract the institution architecture through reorientation and synthesis between old and new architectural languages.

REFLECTION

The idea of using the existing grid system to create the new axis system as a tool to develop the new community centre can be develop further, the architecture should be aligned to these new axis which can strengthen the idea of axis. Besides, the waterway should not be an feature in the project, it should have functions since it’s one of the most important strategy in the project. Using the existing fabric to create the new architectural languages is quite efficient for the idea of reorientation and adaptive reuse. This idea can be developed further with more careful treatment of the details like the ornaments, materiality and etc. The overall conept should not only being seem in the small details but also the masterplanning, for example the theatre is a greate example for the smaller scale adaptive reuse, think about how to translate the similar idea throught the following larger space practice.

TASK 12 MID-SEMESTER REFLECTION

Be critical about the elements in the project, not every features is strong enough to express the overall concept sometimes, it’s important to think about what do this project really need and which idea is the strongest one in the overall design scheme, in this case the waterway might need a more clear intention to bring into the project. Sometimes it’s not about the more elements than it’s better, we also need to be critical about what’s the most powerful strategy and maybe we just need to focus on that to develop a very strong concept for the project

REFLECTION ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGES ADAPTIVE REUSE Understanding the existing fragments and its connotative meaning is important in these tasks, we shift from the larger scale planning to the actural architecture which requires lots of attention to the ornament, materiality, spatial quality and atmosphere of the existing kew asylum.

REFLECTION SECTION

The section design in this task is not only about a technical drawing to show the interior space but also about the narrative that we want to express in our project. The section should be expressive and relevant to the overall concept. It’s handy to start with the general idea and then move on to the finer details in this task. In this project, the idea of axis is applied also to the design of section where the angle of the light tunnel of memorial museum is directly face to the northern light in order to bring the lighting into the interior space while create the effect that the the tower at the background is being highlighted. Also, following the axis, there are several underground levels for more intimate and private space for reading and meeting area. In the contrast of the art studuio and library, the operable skylight is being applied to avoid the direct sunlight through solar axis which might not be ideal for reading and study during the day

STUDIO REFLECTION TYPOLOGY

THE GROUND

ADAPTIVE REUSE

ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGES

The Kew asylum is considered as typical instituional architecture with elements that has negative connotative meanings, in this project, these elements are being reused in different scale in order to create a new architectural topology which is welcoming, active and unfold to the surroundings.

THE ANTI-INSTITUTION V3

STUDIO REFLECTION The negative symbolic meaning of the institutional architecture can be regarded as the combinations of different architectural fragments.
