An Overview of Concrete Slabs

A concrete slab is a flat, rectangular and reinforced concrete structure, which can be of size in length and width. But is of less depth, and is used in the construction of floors, roofs, bridge decks, etc. Design There are many designs for a suspended slab to develop its strength-to-weight ratio. In all cases only the bottom is turned where the top surface is flat: Corrugated, here the concrete is released into a truncated tray made of steel. This increases the strength of the slab and prevents bending of the slab under its own weight. • • • •

Ribbed slab, here given significant additional strength on 1 direction. Waffle slabs, here added strength in both directions. One-way slab, here the structural strength is given in the shortest direction. Two-way slab, here structural strength is given in two directions.

The Building of Concrete Slab

The concrete slab can be either a prefabricated one or an in situ. In prefabricated slabs, slabs are made in factories. And is carried to the place where it is lowered into its place between steel or concrete beams. It can be pre-stressed at the factory, or post-stressed at site. Or even one could be unstable. The main disadvantage of such slabs is that if they are not of the correct dimensions, it may not fit. Concrete slabs are made on the site of the building using boxes into which the wet concrete mix is called formwork.
