A-level Religious Studies

Religious Studies

Background Knowledge and Qualifications

There are no prior knowledge requirements for taking the Religious Studies A Level, although taking it at GCSE (& achieving at least a 6) is desirable, and being able to write well-structured essays is essential. If you have a genuine interest in religion, philosophy & ethics then this course will provide you with the opportunity to study some of those areas of interest in great depth. The course is taught by staff from both WGHS & QEGS RPE Departments.

Course Description

The A level is split into three parts, which carry equal weighting for the final mark & grade. There is no coursework, and each component is assessed in a 2 hour exam each at the end of Year 13. You will be covering a range of religious, philosophical & ethical topics, including – but not restricted to – the following:

Component 1

Paper 1: Philosophy of Religion

Year 12 — Philosophical issues and questions; The nature and influence of religious experience; Problems of evil and suffering.

Year 13 — Philosophical language; Works of scholars; Influences of developments in religious belief.

Component 2

Paper 2: Ethics

Year 12 — Significant concepts & debates in religion, ethics & morality, ethical theories including Utilitarianism and Natural Moral Law; application of these theories to real-world issues e.g. Environmental Ethics, Equality, Sexual Ethics, Situation Ethics, War & Peace

Year 13 — Scholars such as Aquinas, Kant & Aristotle; Deontology & Virtue Ethics; Medical ethics with an emphasis on beginning and end of life issues e.g. abortion, IVF & euthanasia.

Component 3

Paper 3: New Testament

Year 12 — Social, historical and religious context of the New Testament; Texts and interpretation of the Person of Jesus; Interpreting the text and issues of relationship, purpose and authorship.

Year 13 — Ways of interpreting the scripture; Texts and interpretation: the Kingdom of God, conflict, the death and resurrection of Jesus; Scientific and historical-critical challenges, ethical living and the works of scholars.

Examination Structure

For each paper, students will be assessed in three sections:

Section A — Two short, structured questions (8 & 12 marks)

Section B — Two extended-response questions on an unseen passage from a previously studied anthology extract (10 & 20 marks)

Section C — One synoptic extended essay question which ties together all sections of the course (30 marks)

Use of Course and Qualification

Successful completion of this A level will give access to a range of possible career and Higher Education opportunities. The course will provide you with the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills, including collecting, synthesising and interpreting information from a range of sources, and debating a range of topical, sensitive and potentially controversial issues. You will also be required to identify and develop links between the different components of the specification. Such skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers, universities and colleges as being of great value.

Religious Studies combines very well with other humanities subjects such as History, Geography and English. In addition, if taken with the sciences it will give you a broad-based curriculum. Religious Studies will certainly be beneficial if you are seeking a career in Medicine, Law, Education, Politics or Journalism, where an understanding of current and relevant issues, UK Law and an appreciation of different social attitudes is essential. Students of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics have entered many different professions, and the qualification is useful for any occupation which requires a high level of research, analysis and evaluation.

Student Testimonial

Year 13

Across Ethics, Philosophy and New Testament studies we cover such a wide range of topics, ideas and events and all of them are extremely interesting & fun to learn about. These areas are not only fascinating on their own, but the knowledge & understanding gained from each section of the course can also be used together in your responses, which makes the exam questions a lot easier at times! It is a great way of gaining valuable insights as to how the world is shaped by people’s opinions & actions in real-life scenarios. One of the skills that I have gained is the ability to answer a more broad range of question types and to strengthen my exam writing and evaluative abilities. If you choose A Level RPE, it gives you the tools you need to form ideas and create balanced arguments, backed up by sources and beliefs. You will also have wonderful teachers who make the subject captivating & stimulating, and encourage you to really think about the world, and how you – and others – engage with it.
