Welcome to QE Gateshead We are Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, better known as QE Gateshead. Based in the North East of England we provide a range of health services from our leading facilities including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dunston Hill Day Hospital, QE Metro Riverside and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead. We also run a range of services from Blaydon Primary Care Centre and Washington Primary Care Centre, as well as a specialist unit in Houghton-le-Spring for patients who require rehabilitation care. Established in 2005 we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently delivered the highest levels of care for patients. We employ around 3,400 staff and currently provide 580 hospital beds across Gateshead. Alongside a full range of local hospital services, we provide breast screening services for Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and parts of Durham – and we are the North Eastern hub for the National Bowel Cancer and AAA Screening Programmes, covering a population of around seven million people. We provide cutting edge care from some of our state-of-the-art facilities including a £32m Emergency Care Centre, a £12m Pathology centre of excellence and the beautifully designed North East surgery centre. Our maternity services are rated among the very best in the country and our work treating gynaecological cancers has built up a national and international reputation. We also run the Gateshead Fertility Centre, one of the top ten IVF clinics in the country which has created hundreds of new families in the North East over the last decade.
Our primary focus is on providing excellent general health services to our local community, complemented by key specialist areas including gynaecology, maternity, palliative care and old age psychiatry.
World class facilities in Gateshead Emergency Care Centre A brand new, ultramodern Emergency Care Centre for the people of Gateshead has started an innovative new era in healthcare for the region. This fantastic £32m unit brings state-of-the-art healthcare services to Gateshead and the bright, modern building includes single occupancy rooms with en suite bathrooms for all patients in the short stay wards. The unit not only has a unique design and range of facilities, but it completely changes the way patients are cared for during an emergency by bringing together a wide range of services including A&E, a walk in centre, GP services and urgent children’s services.
The Pathology Centre: world class care, for life A futuristic new home for pathology in Gateshead now provides services for several NHS organisations across the region. The ÂŁ12m centre operates at the cutting edge of pathology services and is so advanced that visitors from across the world have visited the QE to see the unit taking shape. Our globally recognised technology provides health professionals with all the medical testing needed to run a modern hospital and deliver fast, accurate results for patients. These services are an essential part of the efficient and safe running of a hospital, analysing the thousands of tests every day. In fact, pathology is involved in more than 70% of all diagnoses made by the NHS.
