QEII Health Sciences Centre The QEII Health Sciences Centre takes care of Atlantic Canadians when they need it most. With 700 physicians, more than 7,000 staff and 1,200 volunteers, the QEII is the largest adult health sciences centre in Atlantic Canada. The QEII serves as the specialized care centre for Atlantic Canada in areas such as heart health, cancer care, neurosurgery and organ transplantation. As the local community hospital for immediate care and emergency services, the QEII provides the most advanced care available today. It is also a leading medical research and teaching centre for tomorrow’s healthcare professionals.

Philanthropy is at the heart of our community. It would be hard to find an Atlantic Canadian family without a connection to the QEII Health Sciences Centre. The QEII is a pillar of health care for this province, and beyond, and it continues to stand on guard for the moments that you or your loved ones need it most. As the advanced health centre for the Atlantic provinces, the QEII’s doors never close. All 10 buildings, across the VG site and Halifax Infirmary site, are open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. And donors to the QEII Foundation continue to influence the care and moments experienced by the over one million patient visits that happen each year. Thank you to the donors who are inspired by our mission to advance health care at the QEII. Through your generosity this past year, patients needing neurosurgery, neurology care or spine orthopaedic surgery will have their care in one, integrated area; those working through their physical rehabilitation were handed back control of their lives through environmental control units; patients with blood cancers had access to additional life-saving treatment; and many more life-changing moments provided through your support. As the healthcare landscape continues to change and the province undergoes a redevelopment of care at the QEII, the QEII Foundation is poised to be a part of transformational change. Change that will see an expanded cancer care program, new space for specialized outpatient care, and relocated complex services as well as community services. Together, as we plan for how health care is delivered 50 years from now, we can help shape care for generations to come. It is an exciting time for health care in this province and we couldn’t be more energized to be part of it with you. And as we celebrate the QEII and the QEII Foundation’s 20 year anniversary, we reflect on the many life-changing and life-saving moments experienced within the walls of the QEII. We also remember that buildings alone do not deliver care. Excellent care is reliant on advanced equipment and technology and the dedicated QEII physicians and staff who put their best energy into helping others each and every day. Philanthropy is at the heart of our community and we thank each person who made a contribution to advance care at the QEII or gave their time as a volunteer. You are showing that health truly does matter most.

I’ve witnessed firsthand how far neuroscience care has come in 20 years.

From innovation and robotic technology to clinical trials, it’s helping patients like me get back to leading full, active lives. – Craig MacDonald

When you ask Craig MacDonald about heroes, it’s an easy answer: the QEII neurologist who has treated him for the past 20 years. Craig first met Dr. Timothy Benstead in 1996 following his first muscle attack. It was a scary and emotional experience for the then 17-year-old, who wondered how this rare neuromuscular disease would eventually impact muscle function and his everyday life. Craig credits Dr. Benstead and his one-on-one guidance and support for helping him learn how to manage the effects of his disease from his late teens to adulthood. Today, Craig gives back to other neuroscience patients at the QEII through a series of community fundraisers he hosts throughout Halifax. He is also enjoying what he loves most: teaching elementary at his alma mater.

– Craig MacDonald

20 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES

Care Today The QEII is now a proud home to Atlantic Canada’s first, and only, Academic Neuroscience Program. Thanks to a community of donors contributing $2.4-million, this world-leading program brings together neurological and spinal care for patients living with disorders such as epilepsy, MS, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and spine and brain injuries.

2x Doubled the size of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit from two beds to four

Significantly reduced wait times for treating and curing more neuroscience patients

Provided world-leading technology for faster and better outcomes for patients

Looking Back Kari Harrison knows what it’s like to be in that patient bed in the QEII’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. She was experiencing up to 64 seizures each day before her first stay in the unit to pinpoint the precise location of her seizures – an experience that ultimately inspired her to pursue a healthcare career of her own. Today as a registered nurse, Kari provides one-on-one care and support for epilepsy patients being treated in the very unit that led to her recent celebration of six years seizure-free.

Last year, this piece of equipment was purchased through the hard work of many.

Today, it’s giving Tristan his second chance at life. – Trudy Dyer

A thriving couple, Tristan and Trudy Dyer were shocked when he was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer at the age of 30. Tristan

received chemotherapy treatment at the QEII’s Medical Day Unit and now requires the specialized treatment of an apheresis machine.

Care Today Through the generosity of donors and participants in the first-ever Ride for Cancer cycling event (formerly Ride the Rails for Cancer) in September 2015, an additional apheresis machine was fully funded for the QEII’s Medical Day Unit. A crucial piece of equipment in advanced cancer care, the apheresis machine facilitates stem cell collection and the separation of blood components, for patients like Tristan. Ride for Cancer is a partnership event between the QEII Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

133 cyclists raised $170,000 for cancer care – Tristan and Trudy Dyer

One apheresis machine fully funded for the Medical Day Unit

Reduced wait times and increased capacity for blood cancer patients

20 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES

Care Today New DNA sequencing technology at the QEII will bring faster and more comprehensive results to patients, thanks to a generous gift from the J & W Murphy Foundation. The machine helps scientists understand genetic changes associated with individual types of cancer

– in addition to providing information that can help predict the course of a disease and even reveal which genetic changes are causing it. The new technology could spare some patients from chemotherapy if DNA sequencing indicates the patient would not be receptive to treatment.

Faster results

Research opportunities

Improved diagnostic and prognostic capabilities

Looking Back Next-generation sequencing instruments have revolutionized the ability to look at DNA sequence because DNA can be extracted from whole human genomes and sequence thousands of regions of DNA at the same time. DNA sequencing was initially a manual process that involved large slab gels and a lot of hands-on, technical expertise. Even after switching to laser-based fluorescent technology, DNA sequencers at the QEII could only look at one piece of DNA at a time. Armed with the latest technology, Dr. Greer and her team are excited to uncover new possibilities for QEII patients. – Dr. Dan Gaston, Marissa Goudie, and Dr. Wenda Greer (far right)

When I had my accident nearly 18 years ago, this technology didn’t exist. Now using just the sound of my voice,

I can control my television or the lights in my room. It’s empowering. – Jackie McKinnon

In a matter of seconds, life changed forever for Jackie McKinnon.

A pool accident resulted in a severe spinal cord injury, causing partial quadriplegia for the Dartmouth native. While her diagnosis has remained the same, technology has not. Advances in research have led to incredible outcomes for patients like Jackie – like assistive devices that can now be customized based on an individual’s needs.

Care Today A community of donors raising more than $98,600 funded the purchase of 18 environmental control units for the QEII’s Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre. Jackie is a proud user of the cutting-edge device that allows individuals with limited mobility to independently access and control equipment around them using infrared technology. Her voice can now control tasks many of us take for granted - things like turning on and off the lights.

Access to eye gaze and voice command technology – Jackie McKinnon

Less reliance on others for daily tasks

Increased independence during recovery

20 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES

Care Today This year, the QEII Foundation celebrated Dr. Michael Dunbar as the inaugural QEII Foundation Endowed Chair in Arthroplasty Outcomes. Supported by BMO Financial Group, QEII Health Sciences Centre Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, and other generous donors, this chair will improve and advance care for orthopaedic patients. As the major orthopaedic centre for Atlantic Canadians, approximately 6,600 patients receive orthopaedic surgery at the QEII each year. Endowed research chairs support growth in a dedicated area through long-term, stable funding. This chair is the fifth of its kind to be funded at the QEII.

Improved, timely access to care

Restored physical function

$3-million invested

Looking Back Malina Nazaryan's hip, at just 22 years old, feels like the hip of someone sixty years older. A Para-swimmer who represented Nova Scotia in the 2013 Canada Games, Malina finds happiness in the pool. It’s the one space where she can be pain-free. If she came to see Dr. Michael Dunbar two decades ago, she would have had two options: have her hip fused or live with the pain until she was over the age of 65; the age that orthopaedic procedures were available. Today, through the evolution of design for hip replacements and the advancement of technology, surgery is now an option for Malina. Dr. Dunbar will perform her hip replacement surgery this summer, bringing her comfort and pain-free days ahead. – Malina Nazaryan

Philanthropic team of champions Community events are organized and managed by an individual, group or organization, and while they differ in size and scope, together these events raised more than $480,000 in 2015-2016. Here are a few examples of the teams of champions who are helping to change lives at the QEII.

Jordan Boyd Celebrity Hockey Challenge Jordan Boyd was 16 years old, bursting with personality, and had a love for life and hockey. In August 2013, the all-star athlete was just beginning his Quebec League journey when – without warning – his life came to a sudden end during his first day of hockey training camp. It was later determined that Jordan had an undiagnosed heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricle Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), which affects the muscles on the right side of the heart and often goes undetected. In memory of Jordan and to advance heart health and patient care, his family organizes the annual Jordon Boyd Celebrity Hockey Challenge, supporting the QEII Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

In 2015, community members, professional NHL players, family and friends raised $130,677 supporting inherited heart disease research and cardiac care at the QEII.

We’re transforming heart health in honour of my brother, Jordan. Through this tournament and his legacy, we’re making early detection easier and more accessible – especially among young athletes. – Greg Dobson

20 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES

Care Today In 2016, the QEII’s first-ever Jordan Boyd Memorial Scholarship was presented to Dr. Ciorsti MacIntyre. This award is made possible by the Jordan Boyd Celebrity Hockey Challenge, supporting inherited heart disease research and transforming heart health at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Presented by Jordan’s older brother, Greg Dobson, and the Boyd family, this scholarship celebrates the life of Jordan and his lasting impact on those touched by heart disease in our region.

More research studies to improve outcomes for those living with AVRC

Increased awareness of heart disease and early detection

Looking Back Community-led events have made a big impact on health care at the QEII. Areas like cancer care have greatly benefited from dedicated community members who want to make a difference. Individuals like Judi Phillips and Karen Woodworth who have impacted cancer care far beyond their day-to-day roles. Over the last three years, these community champions, along with the QEII’s head and neck cancer team, led the ManuaryTM movement; a fundraising initiative challenging participants to grow their facial hair in the name of head and neck cancer. Raising a total of $118,000 since 2014, the beard-growing campaign has funded head and neck cancer research and enhanced patient care at the QEII. In fact, the local movement earned the top fundraising title across Canada. – Karen Woodworth (left) and Judi Phillips (right)

Dr. John Sullivan saved his life and

Dad knew he wanted to give back. – Margaret Steed, daughter

Roy Steed was a small town boy who seized every opportunity he could to become a success at living life, which he did to the fullest. Proud to serve his country overseas in the Second World War, Roy went on to become a civil engineer and worked in the construction industry for more than 65 years. More than two decades ago, Roy was diagnosed with heart disease. Following triple bypass surgery at the QEII, Roy treated this as an opportunity like everything else in his life. As he reflected on the compassion and dedication of his healthcare team, Roy arranged a gift in his will for heart health care at the QEII. The QEII Foundation and the Maritime Heart Centre have joined forces to transform heart health at the QEII. Generous gifts, like Roy's, will help advance heart health care for Atlantic Canadians.

- Roy enjoyed spending time with family, including his great-granddaughter, Meredith

20 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES Estate gifts, of all sizes, amounted to more than $1.1-million in 2015-2016 and supported areas such as: • Cancer research • Eye care • Greatest need • Heart health • Liver transplantation program

Looking Back Dr. Ed Kinley, Jr. was a healthcare pioneer. In the 1950s, heart surgeries were very new and very risky. Dr. Kinley brought his skills to Halifax at what is now the QEII. He performed the first coronary bypass and adult open heart surgeries in Nova Scotia, and installed the first Canadian-made pacemaker in Nova Scotia live on CBC TV. Today at the QEII, more than 1,000 open heart surgeries are performed each year.

The QEII Foundation remembers the Honourable Constance Glube who passed away in February 2016. Connie served as a member of the QEII Foundation Board from 2005-2011, Board Chair from 2007-2009, and as an Honorary Trustee for the last four years. In addition to her time, energy and wisdom on many QEII Foundation initiatives, Connie also started The Richard H. Glube Endowment Fund for Nursing Education at the QEII, in celebration of her late husband. Her generosity will not only have a lasting impact on health care in Nova Scotia, but the many other causes she championed in our community.
