y name is Dana Carson, and I’m QBP’s International Business Development Manager for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. I started riding on the road in 1984, on a mid-1970s Peugeot; soon I was racing every weekend and a passion was ignited that has consumed my life ever since. I didn’t know it at the time, but bike racing was laying the foundation for the rest of my personal and professional life. I’ve been a racer, team manager, directeur sportif, and coach. I’ve worked at the Tour de France, Paris Roubaix, Flanders, and Cyclocross Worlds. Being able to work alongside some of my cycling heroes has been an honor and privilege. Working at QBP is a great fit for me and my love of all things road. Our product offering is always packed with new innovations— the wool jerseys, toe clips, and Benotto bar tape that were part of my early cycling days are long gone. Our brands and vendors are constantly developing new cutting edge products, and our purchasing team is always hunting down those products to bring to you, our customers. For this issue of Call Up, we talk about some of the recent innovations we’ve seen, and we feature the newest and best road products we could find. Also in this issue, we’ll talk a little bit about women’s racing. This is a subject close to my heart, as I co-founded and managed a women’s development team. We’ll hear from Jennifer Picciolo of ISCorp cycling as she gives us the lowdown on how she went from being a mom who commuted by bike to standing on the podium. And let’s not forget about back-to-school purchasing. I know the challenges of working in a college town bike shop well; in a matter of days, shops go from calm to chaos. New bike purchases, tune-ups on old garage bikes, and accessory purchasing all spike at the same time. Locks, lights, commuting tires, and tire sealant fly off the shelves. Be sure to check the back-to-school dates in your area, and order accordingly! See you on the road!

Onyx road bike front hubs use ceramic hybrid bearings for smooth spinning and reduced drag.

Onyx road bike rear hubs pair a dual sprag clutch design with ceramic hybrid bearings to keep you rolling smooth and fast.

The Brawn Behind The Beauty Onyx Racing’s hubs utilize a sprag clutch, a mechanism commonly found in automatic transmissions, helicopters, motorcycles, and other large machinery. A sprag clutch consists of a series of steel wedges, or sprags, housed between hardened inner and outer races. The sprags are positioned at a slight angle, allowing for easy rotation in one direction but instant back stopping in the other direction. In a hub, this equates to instant engagement and virtually zero drag. Additionally, due to the absence of any pawls or ratchets in the rear hub, they are completely silent.

The people behind Onyx Racing got their start manufacturing ship unloaders and pneumatic conveying systems before moving on to produce some of the best hubs the BMX world has ever seen.

Today, the brand has taken those years of precise machining expertise and turned their attention to making premium road hubs—utilizing the same sprag clutch mechanism used in the brand’s BMX hubs and housing it in a beautifully machined shell with ceramic bearings.

Tune up / tech tips and info to boost your know-how

Roll with the Changes Road cycling technology has come a long way since the days of downtube shifters, toe straps, and wool jerseys—from adding a bit of extra tire girth to losing the front derailleur.

I

f you’ve been a fan of road racing over the past decade or two, chances are you’ve noticed that the bikes you see around the shop are drastically different from the ones you see while rewatching your VHS copy of Greg LeMond winning the ’89 Tour. Times have changed, and so have the bikes. While technologies in the sport are constantly evolving, this past year has seen some pretty substantial innovations. Disc brakes, 1x drivetrains, stronger tubular tape, and wider rim and tire profiles are just a few of the most prominent technical innovations that we’ve noticed. While not all of these innovations are necessarily new, they have all played a key role in changing the face of road bikes over the course of the last year in terms of safety, efficiency, weight, comfort, and performance.

Disc Brakes One of the biggest and most noticeable innovations we now see on road bikes is disc brakes. Disc brakes have immensely increased the versatility of road bikes. By removing caliper brakes, frames are able to accept wider rims and tires, thereby increasing the types of surfaces they can be ridden on. While disc brakes have been used on road bikes for a few years, they’re now in the early stages of being legitimized for road racing. Last year, USA Cycling officials allowed them to be used in competition at a local level—meaning any race that didn’t abide by the UCI rule book. In April of this year, however, the UCI announced that it would begin to allow limited testing of disc brakes to occur during the 2015 and 2016 professional road calendars. While this doesn’t come as a surprise to many, it is a huge step forward for both professional racing and the industry at large. The UCI announcement states that professional road

6 / CALL UP / PRODUCT / TECH / TRENDS / KNOW-HOW

teams will be allowed to utilize disc brakes in two events of their choosing in August and September of 2015, with continued testing to occur in 2016. If all goes well during these test phases, disc brakes will be allowed during the full 2017 UCI WorldTour and eventually will be allowed at all levels of road racing.

Wider Rim Profiles & Tires The days of seeing 23mm tires on 19mm wide rims are dwindling. Riders of all levels—from casual weekend riders up to UCI WorldTour pro racers—are realizing the benefits that wider rims combined with wider tires offer. Let’s start with the wider rims. Wider rims—25mm for example— allow the tire to have a rounder profile, eliminating the “lightbulb” effect caused by narrower rims. The rounder profile in turn allows for a more secure connection to the pavement and increased predictability and control while cornering. These wider rims allow a 23mm tire to have the same contact patch as a 25mm tire. Since we’re on the subject of contact patches, that’s one of the advantages that wider profile tires offer. The increased contact with the ground provides more grip and traction, which is extra important when cornering or during rainy conditions. Wider tires also allow riders to drop their PSI. This lower pressure absorbs vibrations from the road for added comfort and allows the tire to roll faster overall. When wider tires are mounted to wider rims, the benefits of each are even more noticeable and open the rider up to additional route possibilities. With a 28mm tire mounted to a 25mm rim, a rider can confidently add some gravel into their road ride or not have to be as concerned about avoiding pothole-filled city streets.

2

1x Drivetrains Drivetrains on road bikes are evolving just as much as wheels and tires—except instead of beefing them up, brands are trimming the fat. At Sea Otter this past April, SRAM announced that it would be hitting the road with its 1x technology with the launch of Force 1 and Rival 1. Available in an extremely wide range of gear combinations, these two new groups have gearing for everyone, from flatlanders to those who enjoy climbing for hours at a time. As discussed in the June issue of Call Up, in the past couple of years, 1x drivetrains have taken over as the standard on mountain bikes and even more recently on cyclocross bikes. More technical details can be found in that article, but the general setup consists of a narrow/wide tooth profile chainring, a wide-range cassette, and clutch rear derailleur.

Tubular Tape The benefits that tubular tires offer a rider are undeniable—supreme ride quality, amazing cornering performance, and safe riding at low pressures (or even completely flat if necessary). Thanks to products like Effetto Mariposa Carogna tubular gluing tape, tubulars are experiencing a renaissance amongst amateur riders who previously never ventured into tubular territory. Tubular tape isn’t a new product by any means. Variations of the sticky stuff have been around for years, but Carogna tape is unique in how it’s constructed. It uses a thin adhesive layer on the rim side and a thicker layer on the tire side that goes all the way to the edge to create more contact with the tire and an extremely secure bond.

A Mom Walks Into A Bike Shop...

Right Place, Right People, Right Time

Up until about five years ago, Jennifer Picciolo, 45, had a pretty casual relationship with her bike. She says, “I did sort of ‘fitness rides’ on my own, but I also tried to run most errands by bike too. I was the mom who pulled the kids around with a Trail-aBike, with a Burley trailer attached to that. At the time I had a pretty inexpensive hybrid bike, but the crank broke, so I upgraded to a second-hand steel touring bike. It’s a great bike I still ride around town.” Jesse Kuester, Store Manager at Wheel & Sprocket in Fox Point, Wisconsin remembers meeting Picciolo: “Jennifer came into the shop with two little boys, one in a baby sling, to shop for a saddle and figure out which tubes go with which vehicle—bike, Burley, and Trail-a-Bike. She was overwhelmed but excited to be out of the house with the freedom that the bike provided.” When her children got a bit older, Picciolo was able to find more time to exercise. “That’s when I joined a group ride for women through the shop. From there, I met a woman who coached a beginners’ group to train for a sprint triathlon. I was intimidated, but decided to give it a shot.” She switched out the mustache handlebars for drop bars, took the fenders off, and trained for the event. Picciolo went into it with an open mind. “Though I had fun, I did not feel like triathlons were really my sport. So I continued the shop’s group rides and increased my miles, my average speeds, and my circle of cycling friends.” 14 / CALL UP / PRODUCT / TECH / TRENDS / KNOW-HOW

Jennifer Picciolo used to “just ride her bike,” but through her neighborhood shop in Milwaukee, WI, she was able to dabble in organized group rides, ultimately discovering she had a real knack for racing. Here she shares the story of how a bike-commuting mom became a podium-finishing racer. Momentum Builds The stage was set for more serious riding as a result of these group rides. “A year later, I got my first carbon fiber road bike. I was immediately, unexpectedly, and noticeably faster. I loved how I felt on this bike. My friends at the bike shop recommended I check out some of the racing group recovery rides.” Kuester says, “We have various levels of rides, but I felt it was important to offer some that are welcoming to all levels of cyclists and provide a sense of community. In Jennifer’s case, our recovery ride was a good fit.” Picciolo continues, “There usually weren’t many women on them, but one night two women who were teammates on the same team joined us. After riding and chatting and then riding together again the following week, they convinced me to try my first bike race. I was 42 years old, but these fast ladies were two years older than me, and that helped me immediately reject any claims that I might be too old to start competing.” Wheel & Sprocket is a shop where you’ll find many racing cyclists hanging out before or after training rides. On one visit to the shop, Picciolo happened to meet her bike coach. “As if on cue, she was there one evening talking to some women about her coaching services. The timing was perfect.” Picciolo admits she knew absolutely nothing about the sport. Luckily, the team she joined, ISCorp, was very supportive, and super generous with their time and knowledge. “I was learning enough to feel confident about jumping in.” She also adds, “I feel

like my bike shop supported me from the beginning. Seriously, at first I didn’t even know how to pump my own tires. I went to many of the Saturday morning flat-changing demos and took a class on bike maintenance at the shop, etc. The shop is the hub of my experience as a cyclist.” Kuester says, “Some of our most rewarding experiences have been watching and teaching customers to become better cyclists; it’s one of the best aspects of our job. Jennifer has really become a great cyclist and bike racer; she’s now a staple in the cycling community. We are so fortunate to have her as an ambassador of the shop.”

We all know one another from the various teams… there’s good camaraderie. I look forward to Tour of America’s Dairyland and to the Intelligentsia Cup for even bigger fields of women at my level.” Even with the assistance of a professional team, and the access to everything a racer needs to perform at a high level, Wheel & Sprocket still plays a pivotal role in her development. She says, “My bike team, ISCorp, has a unique relationship with our bike shop. We are a Wisconsin-based team supporting Wisconsin business. Although our professional women’s team receives some direct sponsorship, our 118-member development team supports our local shop and vice versa.” Kuester says about the team, “ISCorp has a huge commitment to the community, and to junior and women’s development. It’s hard to think of it as a sponsorship. It’s more of a relationship with a greater goal of getting more people on bikes enjoying cycling.”

The Neighborhood Team Staff

Trials, Tribulations, Victories… Picciolo’s first crit race was “thrilling; slow, fast, then slow, then a prime, then eventually it was time to just pedal all-out for the finish.” In that race, she won the prime and took second overall. She was hooked. Over the last few years, Picciolo has learned much about how to train and race. “I’m fascinated by the mobility, performance, the optimal capacity that our bodies are designed to reach. Especially as an ‘older’ athlete, I’m interested in my potential. I’m still new to this, and curious to know how much improvement there can be.”

Rolling With the Punches Picciolo is now beginning her third full year of racing, entering the Category 3 field. “I’ve been able to meet some of my race and athletic goals, while still fitting in the rest of life and raising two boys. I don’t train enough though (about 7 hours a week), so that’s one of my big goals this upcoming year.” The combination of having recently been blindsided by divorce and catting up has not been a recipe for increased performance. “Racing with much faster women has been extremely humbling. And thrilling. This is also the first year that our bike team has a professional women’s squad—the first women’s pro team in Wisconsin. These young women are so inspiring, and they are supportive of our development too.” This kind of environment keeps the fires stoked for race weekends. “The community itself is great.

Picciolo points out, “The shop can be an important entry point to women in racing, especially if those women (like myself) don’t come from a bike racing family, or husband, or brothers, whatever.” She adds, “I think we all agree though that women can do without the girly pink marketing stuff, but that’s not the bike shop’s fault.” What would make the service, “I feel like support, and atmosphere my bike shop better for Picciolo? “I’ve always thought it would be great if supported they had an espresso bar in me from the there somewhere. But since beginningI’m at the shop every other day seriously as it is, with Wi-Fi and coffee that could be a problem…” at first I

didn’t even know how to pump my own tires.”

The potential exists for similar stories to Picciolo’s in any shop willing to offer the same kinds of riding opportunities, community, connections, and the kind of support someone new to racing needs to have fun and grow. In an industry and sport largely dominated by men, it’s even more important to go the extra mile for the women customers that come in. Kuester says, “The way women shop is different than how men shop. More and more women are getting into cycling, so it’s really important that we ask the right questions to address their specific needs, and create an environment where they’re comfortable asking questions too. Part of that experience is having a clean, organized, well-merchandized store; having women on staff; and offering women’s-only group rides.” After all, you never know who might end up on a podium when they unhitch their Trail-a–Bike. ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS Studies show that active kids perform better in the classroom and decrease behavior management time for teachers by one-fifth. Jake Newborn of the Wisconsin Bicycle Federation shares how their Safe Routes To School program is helping students in Milwaukee, and how shops can get involved to help create lifelong riders.

F

ar more than a typical one-day Bike Rodeo, the Wisconsin Bike Fed Safe Routes To School Program is getting Milwaukee students active and out on the streets of their community. The 10-hour curriculum begins with in-class reading, writing, and mapping activities that are tied to Common Core learning targets. After the kids learn the basics in the classroom, we move them to the playground where they learn basic riding skills, such as choosing the right size bike, riding straight, looking over your shoulder, the use of hand signals, street positioning, hazard avoidance, and braking. After several days of skills practice, we block off a nearby street to practice the same skills in a real environment. Finally, all the students who pass the skills test get to go on a ride in real traffic. We not only teach how to ride and the rules of the road, but we also teach where to ride and how to read the Milwaukee Bike Map, and use the Google Maps bike routing application to avoid major arterials.

The program includes a free helmet for each participant, instruction on how to properly wear it and why, and education about all the health and environmental benefits of cycling. This all-inclusive approach is what sets our program apart from other programs or Bike Rodeos. We are very proud that our Safe Routes to School Program is recognized as among the most comprehensive in the country. We have had great success at a few schools, one that had five or so kids biking only on nice weather days now has over 30 on a consistent basis, and over 100 on special Bike to School event days! 26 / CALL UP / PRODUCT / TECH / TRENDS / KNOW-HOW

As the kids ride more, they become junior advocates for bicycle and pedestrian improvements in their neighborhoods. Recently a Department of Public Works road reconstruction project was looking for input from the community on the project. The students in our Safe Routes program wrote and submitted over 30 handwritten letters pointing out problems they have crossing streets and where they would like to see bicycle accommodations made. If you’d like to get involved, but you’re unsure whether or not you currently have a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) working in your area, check with your state department of transportation. Each state has a person who handles TAP funding and Safe Routes to School programs.

Your shop can often be the first line of advocacy in the neighborhood. Many of the biggest changes, however, can come locally and from the ground up. If it seems too daunting to go through the federal grant process, look at local city and county sources to fund encouragement and education programs. Speak with your city’s bike and pedestrian coordinator or city engineer. Host a Walk and Bike to School Day event at your kid’s school. If, however, you are interested in being more involved in applying for grants, contact your local government or bike advocacy group to find out how you can help. Your shop could be the first line of advocacy in the neighborhood, so showing up at these Bike to School events to help with basic safety checks and filling up tires can go a long way to get more kids biking.
