Apple is reported to be testing a service which allows Siri to transcribe received voicemail and, using, Apple's iCloud will then send it as a text message to your phone. Apple is adding the ability to transcribe voicemails to enable iPhone users to read the messages that people leave after the tone, rather than having to dial in and listen to the voicemail. This feature is reportedly releasing in 2016 on most handsets. Apple employees have already begun testing new voicemail service iCloud Voicemail, which can send callers information about where you are and why you can't pick up the phone. Then, rather than send the caller to voicemail, Siri will answer the call and transcribe the voice message. This feature would be a welcome addition to the next generation of the iPhone, especially for a generation of phone users who increasingly hate voicemail. While it is often easier to communicate what you want to say in a voicemail than in a text, it is much easier for your recipient to read a text message than it is to listen. Many big-ticket companies, such as Coca Cola and JPMorgan, have gotten rid of voicemail for many of their employees. Google has offered voicemail transcription (as part of its Google Voice service) with dismal results. The company recently announced that it was improving the quality of transcription on Google Voice in a company blog post that said that a new technique has reduced errors by 49%.

Some speculate this as a possible sign that Apple plans to launch a cell service of its own similar to Google's Project Fi. Apple observers have speculated before that the company may want to become a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO, so that customers would have their calls, bills and messages handled by Apple rather than a carrier such as AT&T or Verizon. Apple itself would deal with carriers to negotiate use of their networks. Business Insider reported Apple is in talks with carriers in the United States and Europe to test an MVNO.
