Residencies can also enable this kind of co-productive sonic investigation and invention. Rather than being just opportunities for listening, or novel aural experience, they are chances to encourage collaborative sound-making and sound-thinking – where unexpected voices join in the dialogue – and to employ sonic tactics such as amplification, filtration, improvisation, and even distortion as social and acoustic means. Overall, they can contribute to a multifaceted and polyphonic understanding of rural and urban built environments, as a foundation for shaping the resonant future of our sonic commons.
