Life and Times of Chief (Hon) C. O. C. Chiedozie Former Principal of National Grammar School Nike

Chief C. O. C. The Firebrand - Class of 1992 It was the revered Mahatma Gandhi who once admonished us to “be the change you (we) wish to see in the world” That statement should be more evident in our lives and surrounding today. The 1992 set nicknamed “The Firebrand” set is truly a phenomenal set blessed with individuals who listened to the clarion call of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite the fact that the SSCE results of all members of Class of 1992 were seized by WAEC, many of the members whose academic pursuit were thwarted and delayed by this unfortunate event still decided to come together for the good of the school thus living the words of wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi by making themelves available to be the change NAGRAM desire. Sometime around May 2017, a WhatsApp page was started. What started like a chit chat forum with old friends catching up grew with calls by folks to hold a reunion. The WhatsApp forum quickly grew in numbers. Shortly after that, satellite meetings of members of the forum started springing up. First was Enugu meeting of NAGRAM 1992 members residing in the metropolis. Then Lagos chapter started meeting. Port Harcourt, Abuja and Awka followed suit. While all this chapters were meeting and catching up with old times, members started expressing concerns over the state of the school. It was then decided that a reunion be held in Enugu on 1 October 2017. A Committee was set up for the reunion. The Committee was charged with hosting a reunion, appointing electoral commission and charting a course that will lead to a formation of an association for members of Class of 1992. The Committee delivered; appointing people into different committees including a Constitution Drafting Committee with members scattered all over the world. The committee were able to utilize some conference calling features to deliberate and deliver a constitution not minding the time difference among members of the committee. On Saturday 31st September 2017, an election was held with the emergence of hardworking executives led by Dr Obumneme Udoye. On October 1st 2017, the class of 1992 Executives took office during the reunion which had in attendance 14 of their former teachers. The reunion was indeed a carnival-like celebration with pomp and pageantry. It was indeed gratifying to see both former teachers and their students dancing to great music amid good food, drinks, jokes etc. Preventive health screening was also conducted while both cash gifts and some goodies were given to every former teacher that graced the occasion. The success of the reunion, coupled with the visions of the EXCO meant that the Class of 1992 after visiting the school decided to become the change that they desire. They also commenced formal registration of the body with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The EXCO met and decided that a monthly/annual dues collection will commence on 1st January 2018. The EXCO duly appointed a building Committee members headed by men with the utmost integrity and dedication. They visited the school and made a determination for Class of 1992 to remodel the dilapidated and abandoned Chemistry and Physics Lab. They prepared a budget and a survey plan for the remodeling and presented to the EXCO who approved and set a commencement date of April 9 2018. On the said date, Rev Father Williams Ezeh a NAGRAM alumnus prayed for members of Class of 1992 and success of the project during the ground breaking. The project continued immediately after that. One of the greatest thing about the project was that work never stopped even for a day due to lack of money. The building Committee members juggled their personal and professional lives to be at the site everyday, supervising and inspecting work on the site. Another important thing to mention was that some members who live out of town made it a point to visit the project site whenever event brought them to Enugu. On Sunday 17 June 2018, two months after the remodeling project started, two Classroom blocks for Chemistry and Physics in an elaborate handover ceremony and in the presence of Enugu State Government, was handed over to the Principal of the school. Like in all event that Class of 1992 are involved with, the ceremony was well attended and it was celebrated with great pomp and pageantry. The Class of 1992 has shown great resolve in being the change that they want to see in NNAGRAM. We call on other graduating sets/class to join hands in restoring the pride and dignity of our alma mater.

Sir Tony Nwude For the Family

Nike – My Great Alma Matter When I think of my high school days, I think back of the memories of National Grammar School Nike: some great, some good, some not so good – but all so memorable. And hey, that’s life, but like everyone else, high school would either make or mar and in most cases help mold you - because high school is your foundation – your foundation for life. NAGRAM (NIKE) was such a place for me. Growing up in Enugu in the post civil-war era was rough enough for the average Igbo person. Besides the aftershocks of the civil war, the Federal Government economic policies (too numerous to list) of the early 70’s further dealt the average Igbo family devastating blows – but then the story of the Igbo man recovery is analogous to the Egyptian Phoenix mythology of - rising from the ashes to new greatness. It was in this post civil-war era and environment that I arrived Nike in January 1972. We had some buildings – some destroyed during the war, the standing ones had very few furniture, no laboratories, nothing – we sat on bricks and used makeshift tables – planks, supported by bricks. Sitting on those bricks for a whole day was painful, sometimes unbearable – but we didn’t care, we were there to learn, we were happy being there. Nike was not regarded as top tier school, but it had character. Because at Nike you had students from all strata of society: the rich, the middle class, the poor, the well behaved, the rough around the edges, and some bad eggs – And with the 82nd Brigade Army Barracks across the highway, and the proximity of the customary Nigerian Army Mammy Market, needless to say, Nike did not provide the most conducive learning environment. But then, that Nike environment builds character - you learn to survive against all odds: because if you can make it in Nike, you can make it anywhere – same as “if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere” And that Nike survival attitude shines through in our sports and in academics and our lives – NAGRAMites just had to excel without excuses – it is in our DNA. And what a platform and a foundation for life as grownups. But it was never easy. That the school thrived in the environment I described above was no small feat. And it didn’t just happen by chance. With a reputation as a tough place to be, it required some equally tough-minded individuals to lead the school. I vividly remember when Dr. C. C. Nwapa was introduced as the new principal in 1973. The Dean, paraphrasing the biblical (Isaiah 6:8), introduced Nwapa thus: “when the state school board asked whom shall we send, Dr C.C. Nwapa answered: here I am, send me” – Such was Nike’s reputation, that it required a special person to go there as principal. And then came C.O.C Chiedozie, or simply COC as he was known. COC will go down as the most important person that helped to shape generations of students that came through Nike. COC was tough, he was relentless, he was uncompromising, he was driven in all aspects to make Nike a household name it became in the then East Central and old Anambra States. I vividly remember COC as an uncompromising disciplinarian and those special aña canes – reserved for anyone that got out of line or thought about it. And I remember his gifts with words: big grammar, his eloquence, his wisecracking quips – one that I remember till date in his uncompromising approach to order and discipline, was that for any erring or unruly student, he would discover that: “At Nike, brutality is made manifest” I want to use this opportunity to congratulate all of us (NAGRAMites) for surviving and thriving – we had to - Nike provided us with the best foundation for life. It is so heartwarming we are now poised to make a difference – it took a long while to get here, but nevertheless, not too late. And finally, a special thank you for all the people that have toiled tirelessly to keep the Nike Old Boys Association going, all those that have contributed for the progress made so far, and for the NAGRAM Nike Alumni USA that have been unrelenting to make this maiden convention a reality. God Bless us all – Long Live Nike Grammar School, Nike Enugu. Simeon Osita Nwegbo, (Class of 1976) – Amor Et Fides!!! Writing from Lagos & Atlanta – August 2018

Congratulates our patriach and entire members of 1992 NAGRAM members for successfully completing and handing over two classroom blocks. We also congratulate NAGRAM USA for a successful inaugural convention

DIDA CUS E ZE Felicitates with the entire NAGRAM family on our first inaugural convention. It was indeed an honor to have worn the black and white uniform of this great school in the process spending six years of transition from teenager to full fledge man albeit with mixed feelings.

CO NG RAT ULATION S TO AL L N AG RAM ALU M N I ON IN AU G U RAL CON V E N T I O N As a proud member of the firebrand 1992 set, my joy knew no bounds when I reconnected with my colleagues. It is even more fun now reconnecting with both senior and junior colleagues from the larger NAGRAM family. While we cannot undo some of the sad experiences some of us may have witnessed during our days in the school e.g. SSCE seizures etc, I remember with great nostalgia the exploits of some of those who have passed through the school. Individuals like Augustin Jay Jay Okocha, Chibuike Irulo, Innocent Egbunike, etc whose shining lights were there for all to witness. This individuals like most of us showed the NAGRAM resilience against all odds to excel in their respective fields while allowing the school to go through them. As we begin the journey of giving back to our alma mata, I appeal to us all to remember that while we may have had various experience going through the school, we should not lose sight that the school contributed towards we what we have become today. have an opportunity to be agent of positive change that the school desire. I congratulate my 92 set brothers who set an unquenchable fire through their passionate initiative in remodeling TWO class room blocks; the 91 set who successfully organized a career week with Zack Orji as special guest. I also salute the brothers in Atlanta and US as a whole for not letting the fire quench and our efforts down the drain. Most of all, I am sending a message across to my family that showed me love and care throughout the six years of transition and beyond. My wife and kids that supported in making my journey to Atlanta a success. *WITH LOVE AND SPIRIT OF A NAGRAMITE* *AMOR ET FIDES*

ARCHITECT OBI ANIAGOLU AND FAMILY TO NAGRAM ATLANTA CONVENTION Ode to my school,my pride,my joy,my alma mater I remember the beginning, when I was wet clay, primary school did the molding. I still cant forget those immortal memories of school Where everything was serious, no playing fool. I remember how school made me grow up with time, For those moral lessons needed for lifetime. I still cant forget those lunch boxes stuffed with bun, butter and jam. Those serious and nervous moment, never like exam. I remember, me and my friend with a hunch, our talking, jesting and laughing moments during lunch. I still cant forget our talks about muscles, six packs were common, For, we were gonna be the future men. I remember those celebrity posters and movie’s discussion, Staying away from politics or recession. I still cant forget those pok-e-mon cards, nor the canteen- our place to fest, Where we enjoyed the best. I remember the last page game bingo, Playing pen-fight with other pens to borrow. I still cant forget making our own fake story, And others believing-Oh really..? I remember the end of this now, seeing the auditorium curtains fall from above. I still cant forget those best moments of life. Missing those unforgettable days school life. -Sulaiman Sait

The felicitation.....I was fortunate enough to have served in the Project Committee of the recently completed (and handed over) block for Chemistry and Physics Laboratory at our alma mater. As a member of one of the greatest classes to walk the corridors of NAGRAM (1992) ,I’m proud!! Not just of being a class of 92 but for being a part and parcel of GREAT MEN of NAGRAMS. I remember the first time we visited the school ,just before our first REUNION....the school was a scene from the horror movies, but I didn’t allow the scene to take away old memories. The moment I entered the compound, there was an immediate flashback running in front of me, where I remembered my first days, when my uncle used to drop me off at the gate, to face “angry” looking faces of the senior boys. I was really tiny then, when compared to the senior students. Cant forget my classes, where I made my friends. Backbench noises we made, those hide and seek games with teachers we played. First crush(then Miss Unobagha ...who wants to know should ask my class mate Arc. Ik Iwuala) time wasting blush!!! mimicking teachers, even calling some weird names ,Lol.. there are pages and pages to pen down, but time eludes me. My brothers, mentors and comrades ,we have a great task ahead if we must bring these memories, which I know most (if not all) has something similar. I’m fully aware that the transition is not easy and everyone is not pleased with how things have transpired, but being around students, teachers, staff and alumni members you sense the passionate initiative to take the school from good to great. In order to take that next step, I believe the burden is on the current students and the alumni alike. Personally, I used to question everything about the transition and didn’t want to embrace the changes, but I’ve learned you have to work beyond the rumor mill and understand that change is usually difficult. You can’t always please everyone, but what you should question is whether the source of the change was rooted in the best interest of the students and is moving the school forward despite the unclear details. It a pity that I am unavoidably absent from this convention, nevertheless, my heart is with you all. I take special time to thank all that have contributed time, money and other sacrifices that I may not know. Your efforts will surely be rewarded. Borrowing a leaf from a writer.. JAMES HADLEY CHASE.. “I will keep my ears to the ground” for your deliberations. Thank you all. ANIAGOLU OBIORA.(working Associate at TELIOS INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT.. Congratulations! My Fellow Nagramites and Current Students, It is with great pleasure that I convey my greetings to all. I am very glad to have gone through National Grammar School Nike. In fact, I wish to put plainly that l learned a lot of lessons through my education as a regular student and as a Health Prefect. The challenges I experienced as a science student due to limited infrastrature has shaped my keen interest in promoting any proposal to advance the school into a world class type. With hardwork, patience, and teamwork, any student can become what he wants to be. If you are a current student reading this message, l wish to inform you that it is your interest that matters first. Once an interest is picked, then you set steps to reach that goal. Sometimes, it may require the help of others. Dont worry about asking for help when you need it especially when it comes to explaining chemical processes for those in sciences. Be persistent and courageous. I am happy to belong to the Nike Old Boys Association. Any improvement activities planned for the school will certainly encourage others to look forward as prospective students. Good luck to all in your respective endeavours.

I and my family wish to congratulate the organizers of the maiden NAGRAMS Nike Enugu Convention holding in Atlanta-Georgia USA. It is a thing of glorification to God that we all live to witness this unfold as we gather to give back to our Al ma – mater. My admission into prestigious National Grammar School in 1983 was not by accident. I was a boarding house student ‘Odenigwe’. This afforded me the opportunity in 1985 when I was in JSS 3 to have served the then able, indefatigable Senior Prefect ‘Peter Kingsley Chukwuma Anagor’. He showed a lot of leadership prowess, very dignified personality, Courageous, and of high integrity. In fact; the school needed a personality of his caliber at that time. In 1988, I served the school as a Librarian Prefect then graduated in 1989. More so; Today same then Senior Prefect Anagor PKC is part & parcel of those that are making history; I remain proud of him. May
