PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Kia ora koutou, Hello to you all.

It has been, without a doubt, one of the most challenging summers for us all in Point Wells. A significant flooding event across Auckland and then Cyclone Gabrielle all in just a few weeks.

The extreme weather has impacted us all, in particular those who were without power for several days after Gabrielle.

It became apparent to our committee that our hall was not necessarily suitable as a Civil Defence shelter due to our inability to access water during power cuts, and the vulnerability of being a low-lying area. We are reaching out to the Council to clarify how we can best support an emergency situation and be better equipped to support our residents.

We are also looking carefully at the seawall and how well our drainage system functioned.

Thank you to all of you who reached out to neighbours to support, sharing power, generators and resources during the Cyclone.

We will have a community meeting to share learnings and ideas on how to be better prepared for these types of events.

Kind regards

Alana McClintock
