Making A Difference With The Kootenay Co-op Giving Tree A fun and popular way for the Kootenay Co-op, its members and shoppers to support the community is with the annual seasonal Giving Tree. Each year a different organization is chosen and this year the recipient was Nelson’s emergency shelter, Stepping Stones for Success, a program of the Nelson Cares Society. For the people who access the services of Stepping Stones, not having a place to call home becomes especially challenging at this time of year. They continuously struggle with obtaining three nutritious meals a day, locating affordable housing, and finding warm clothes or bedding. Thanks to the generosity of those in the community who supported the Kootenay Co-op Giving Tree through the holiday season, Stepping Stones received more than $2,500 worth of cash and goods in the form of warm sleeping bags and nutritional supplements. Stepping Stones and the Kootenay Co-op would like to thank everyone who made this initiative a resounding success.

Needs Assessment Of Kerr Apartment Residents Ongoing Service providers are assessing the immediate and longer term needs of residents of the Kerr’s Apartment block to assist them in their recovery from the fire on January 6. The Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other organizations are conducting the assessments and working cooperatively to get residents back on their feet as quickly as possible. The Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) is coordinating government agencies and service providers in the recovery efforts. Agencies have been successful in finding temporary accommodation until the end of the month for 11 residents who have not found an alternative place to stay. Longer-term accommodation remains a priority. Donations in aid of the Kerr’s Apartment residents have been generous and numerous. Kaslo Hospice Has A New Coordinator

Nelson and District Hospice Society is pleased to welcome Shelley Stickel-Miles as the new coordinator for the Kaslo and District Hospice office. Shelley is taking over from Joan Hall, who resigned in December to pursue other interests. A retired United Church minister, Shelley brings a variety of experiences to the position including fundraising, administration, public speaking and grief support. Shelley previously held the position of hospice coordinator in Kaslo several years ago and has more recently been involved with hospice as a member of the grief and trauma team. For 2011, part of Shelley’s mandate will be to focus on the areas of membership, fundraising and profile raising. In addition, a new advisory committee will also be formed. We wish to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to outgoing coordinator Joan Hall for her total commitment to high quality hospice and palliative care in the community of Kaslo. Joan has worked hard to raise the profile of hospice and to ensure that client’s needs are met, above and beyond the call of duty, during one of the most vulnerable experiences of their lives. In response to a gap in services, Joan has particularly answered to the need for adequate grief support for all ages by most recently forming the grief and trauma team. Joan has always answered a call for assistance, whether from the terminally ill, the dying and/or the bereaved and their families with great compassion, listening, guidance and understanding. We wish her the very best in her new endeavours.

For their Kaslo program they will be joined by clarinetist Nicola Everton for the Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A major KV 581. All these musicians have extensive experience as principle players in various orchestras in western Canada and now live in the West Kootenay. In addition to the Mozart quintet, the program includes works by Carla Maria von Weber and Ian McDougall that also include clarinet. They have assisted locally with fundraising and the provision of hygiene kits and gift cards. Island Farms Dairy has donated 300 litres of milk to Our Daily Bread – which is offering free lunch and dinner to Kerr Apartment residents until the end of the month. Both Safeway Canada and Save-On Foods have offered food supplies and support; other corporations have made significant financial contributions. Country Furniture and Decor in Nelson donated 12 new mattresses. Residents outside of Nelson have contributed over seven truckloads of clothing and household goods, and the outpouring of donations, fundraising events, offers of shelter and financial contributions from Nelson and area residents has been phenomenal. “All the agencies involved in assisting the residents appreciate the generosity of everyone,� said EOC Director Kevin Cormack. “It makes you realize what a special place this is when you see the compassion, to say nothing of the generosity, of this and other area communities. Angler Survey Casts Off !

On January 11 John Norris died peacefully at home after a productive and happy life as a teacher and as a writer. His Old Silverton was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Historical Writing. Amongst other accounts he has written in The Myrmidon Papers of his seemingly miraculous survival at the sinking of HMCS Athabascan on which he served during the Second World War. He left a biographical book-length work as yet unpublished. It will be printed in the coming months. We are very grateful for the loving care he received from friends in the medical professions as well as from others. John was born in Silverton in 1922 and was raised in Nelson. His heart was always in the Kootenays. It is here that in 1965 he built his fascinating house and created his beautiful garden which so many have enjoyed visiting.

With the cold weather this time of the year the lure of Kootenay Lake may diminish for some local residents. For more hardy anglers, however, there is no better time to cast that lure. The Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) wants to know how successful – or not – those anglers are. From now until November 2011, the Kootenay Lake Angler Survey is on. “This will be the first field survey of anglers on the main lake since the 1980s,� says FWCP fisheries biologist Steve Arndt. “The information we expect to gather will be extremely valuable, both for measuring the recreational and economic benefits of the fishery, and for helping evaluate the effects of our major compensation initiatives such as Meadow Creek Spawning Channel and the Nutrient Restoration Program.� The FWCP works on behalf of its program partners BC Hydro, the Province of BC and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife impacted by the construction of BC Hydro dams. Local contractor, Redfish Consulting, will be undertaking the survey work, with Simon Fraser University analysing the statistical catch data. The angler survey will record the species and size of fish caught, as well as the length of time anglers spent finding and catching them. It will focus on the main body of the lake but also include anglers who have been fishing in the West Arm, returning to Balfour. Project personnel will interact with

anglers at key boat access ramps, attend some local fishing derbies, and approach some shore-based anglers. Counts of total fishing boats will be made by flights from Creston to the north end of the lake. Project personnel will interview anglers about their harvest and fish released, and with the permission of the anglers, will record length and weight measurements, and take scale and otolith (“earstones� which aid fish in balance and hearing) samples from bull trout and rainbow trout. “This survey will provide the first whole-lake estimates of angler use and harvest since the nutrient additions started, and provide important biological data as well,� said FWCP program manager Andrew MacDonald. “But to get to that point we are reliant on anglers sharing their fish catch information, and we hope they will participate.� After all the data has been collected and analysed, the results will be available for the public through the FWCP website at fwcp.ca. Nelson Library Reaches Fundraising Goal Nelson residents have a reputation for generosity when it comes to community projects. The community came through again for the Nelson Library Expansion Project, which reached its fundraising goal of $100,000 just before the close of 2010. Now, the library heads into a new year

with expanded space, hours, and improved services and programs. The Nelson Library has increased its floor space by 5100 square feet, with changes that include a bright new children’s area in the new lower level, reorganized collection, and new computer and study areas. More space also allows for a larger collection in the coming years. The library has also expanded the community it serves to include Areas F and South H, and this means an increase in operating and collection development funds through taxation and additional Provincial and Municipal funding. This has allowed for more staff, which has already resulted in better service and longer hours. The library now opens daily at 10 am. “We owe so much to our community,” says Chief Librarian June Stockdale. “The Fundraising Committee has worked flat out, and the public responded with great generosity and enthusiasm. We are thrilled and grateful for the community support we’ve received.” More than 70 individuals, organizations, and businesses wrote cheques, in addition to 230 people who contributed to the buy-a-shelf campaign. The December drive saw donations come in from $25 to $3,000. Further contributions from the community will now be applied to fixtures and furnishings, as well as the purchase of additional materials for patrons to borrow. Donors who took the campaign to the top in the final days of 2010 include Whitewater Ski Hill, City Council and Staff, the Nelson Library Board, Friends of the Library, Shaw Cable, Audrey Denison, and Brian and Suzie Holmes.
