“Wolverines eat everybody,” says Doug Chadwick, whose book The Wolverine Way is published by Patagonia. “Alive, dead or long dead, moose, mouse, fox and frog; still warm or long-frozen.” The biologist and author tracked wolverines in Montana’s Glacier National Park for five years. He came to see the gnarly little carnivores as ‘the most intriguing creatures ever to walk the wild.’ But, for all their bonecrunching ferocity and their ability to climb everythin - “trees, cliffs, avalanches and summits” - wolverines are in serious trouble. The West Kootenay EcoSociety will host Chadwick in Nelson on Wednesday, February 16, at the Nelson United Church at 7 pm, sponsored by Wildsight and Patagonia. Suggested donation is $5 to $8, with proceeds benefitting EcoSociety’s participation in the campaign to Keep Jumbo Wild. “This is a great opportunity to learn more about the wily and elusive wolverine,” said David Reid, Executive Director for West Kootenay EcoSociety. “They provide another example of why we need to keep working at protecting wildlife and wildlife corridors. Everyone is welcome to attend - we hope to see you there!” Wildsight is bringing Doug Chadwick to the Columbia Basin for the Wolverine Way tour throughout February. Hired Equipment Registration West Kootenay District The West Kootenay District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is now completing Hired Equipment lists for the upcoming fiscal year. All individuals or companies who are currently registered through the ministry’s offices in Nelson or Grand Forks will be receiving invitations to re-register their equipment by mail by the end of February. Individuals or companies who were not registered in 2010, but who wish to have their equipment listed, are invited to visit the Nelson or Grand Forks office to obtain the appropriate registration forms. You will be required to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance with minimum $2 million third party liability, and a WorkSafe BC clearance letter prior to starting work on any ministry projects. Dump trucks must provide a current weigh slip, front tire size, and manufacturer’s front axle rating. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year, and must be owned or leased-to-own in order to be eligible for registration. Seniority is not transferable from area to area. The deadline for new registrations for the 2011/2012 fiscal year is March 20, 2011. Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the 0pen List. Note that there is no charge for registering new equipment, or for changing or deleting equipment information already listed.

Starting Thursday, February 24, Nelson Community Services Centre will be running a support group for women from 10 am to noon until April 21. This group is for women who have experienced any kind of abuse or mistreatment from a partner â&#x20AC;&#x201D; mental, emotional, physical, sexual, financial, etc. The support group will provide women the opportunity to discuss and share their experiences of abuse in a confidential, safe and non-threatening environment. Women can break down the barriers of isolation, connect with others, and receive emotional support and practical information. Topics that will be covered in this group include seeking solutions, healing ourselves, expanding support systems, gaining confidence and esteem, finding a voice, boundaries, and relaxation techniques. Will I be stuck with the pet if it isn’t adopted? No. First, we have been very successful in finding homes for all our animals. But if the adoption takes longer than expected or wanted, we will move the pet to another foster home. We are a no-kill organization.
2.
Isn’t it too hard to let go of the pet? While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a friend, it is much easier if you are happy with the pet’s new home. KAAP involves you in the adoption process, and you feel good about your foster pet’s future.
3.
Won’t it tie me down from traveling? No. Just give KAAP your schedule, and we will make it fit with our foster pets’ needs. We are looking for weekend-only and short-term foster homes as well, to help fill these gaps.
4.
What will it cost me? Only your precious non-renewable resource – your time. KAAP provides all the supplies for the pet. Anything you wish to donate will receive a tax receipt, as we are a registered charity.
5.
What qualifications do I need? A big heart, a home (or permission from your landlord to foster pets), a love and patience for animals, and time to spend with them. Let us know if you have any special skills or experience with animals, their training, or medical care.
6.
What if I need help? You always have a KAAP volunteer to call and discuss any concerns.

Scrabble Tournament A Success The Slocan Valley Scrabble Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1st annual scrabble tournament was a great success. Thirteen players attended the event which was held at the Slocan City Legion Hall on Saturday, January 22. Participants came from all around the area including Castlegar, Shore Acres, Nelson, Winlaw and New Denver. Luke Wells won highest game score in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;4-Playersâ&#x20AC;? category and was awarded a signed print donated by Winlaw artist, Pam Sims. Luke also won for highest single-word score in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;4-Playersâ&#x20AC;? category and received a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Typoâ&#x20AC;? game donated by Secret Garden Toys of Nelson. In the â&#x20AC;&#x153;2-Playersâ&#x20AC;? category, highest game score went to Joyce Kozdrowski, and highest single-word score was won by Alan Brown. Evan Butler of Winlaw, age nine, won a prize for being the youngest player. Alan Brown, organizer of the event and spokesperson for the Slocan Valley Scrabble Club, said the club has donated the admission fees and food concession sales to the Slocan Community Library. At the 2010 Career and Job Fair, over 250 attendees visited the main campus of Selkirk College to learn about the various careers offered by businesses and organizations representing a diverse assortment of industries, from the service sector to health care. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have invited students from local high schools and are making sure the students across all of our campuses are aware of the event,â&#x20AC;? said Kinakin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In addition, we look forward to fielding questions about career and work-related topics throughout the dayâ&#x20AC;? Jumbo Update Winter 2011
Recently Psyche Brown, manager of major resort projects for the Southern Interior of BC, told me her office has provided all the requested information to Victoria, and she has no information about timing of any potential decision for the Master Development Agreement (MDA) for the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort and real estate development. Before the holidays a delegation from the Ktunaxa (Kootenay) Nation traveled to Victoria to deliver the Qat’muk (Jumbo Valley) Declaration in which they called for the government of BC to reject the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort. “The Qat’muk Declaration is a clear expression of Ktunaxa interest in the Jumbo-Toby Creek Watershed,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa National Chair. “The Qat’muk (GOT MOOK) is the home of the Grizzly Bear Spirit and is the unique and proper place to honour this spirit,” stated the Declaration. Creative Journey Celebrated At The Nelson Library
Paula Smith’s mother still has Paula’s Grade 8 sketchbooks. At first she drew from photographs and pictures cut from magazines, but as her creative bent took root, and she began taking additional courses, Paula began to draw from life while studying the work of other artists. It was about this time that the dream of being an artist even a starving artist - took hold. It hasn’t let go. College programs provided opportunities for skill development, but also presented challenges in conflicting art ideologies, and so when romance led to marriage which led to children, the pencils and brushes were shelved for a time. And yet the creative drive was never far away, surfacing again in the medium of stained glass and a side-job of creating custom glass panels alongside ongoing art projects with growing kids. Her recent multi-venue exhibition, Blueprints of Youth, celebrates the journey, and also served as an introduction in her new home of Nelson. She’s happy to be here, where the creative juices have begun flowing in earnest. “People back in Ontario thought I was crazy for leaving a good job at City Hall,” Paula explains. “We moved for a better lifestyle: calmer, clean fresh air, cool summer nights, not over-populated, peaceful, and most of all, creative.” Now, kids grown, Paula has arrived heads, hands, and heart back in the art world, and celebrates with works in acrylic, pencil, and mixed media exploring subjects from abstract to realist. Her work is now on display at the Nelson Library (602 Stanley Street), including a wall hanging in the stairwell inspired by Paula’s earlier stained glass work. The show continues through March.
