Our Lady of Angels Church in Woodbridge recently celebrated the Feast Day of their Patroness. A s r e c o u n t e d by M e l i s s a C h av e s , w h o a l o n g w i t h h e r husband Carlos, organized the parish festivities. The origins of the devotion to Our Lady of Ang e l s i s Fr a n c i s c a n a n d t h e s t o r y of how the image of Our Lady became patroness dates back to Costa Rica. A teenage peasant g i r l , Ju a n a Pe r e i r a , w a s o u t by a n e a r by r i v e r g a t h e r i n g w o o d , b e cause that was her primary chore f o r h e r f a m i l y. S i t t i n g o n t o p o f a large rock was a small soapstone “doll”. It was a lady holdi n g a b a by. S h e d e c i d e d t o t a k e it home and put it in a box. The n e x t m o r n i n g, s h e c h e c k e d o n t h e d o l l b u t i t w a s g o n e. H o w e v e r, w h e n s h e w e n t o u t a g a i n t o gather wood, the doll appeared back on top of the rock. The girl

took the doll home again and placed it in her box. This happ e n e d a t l e a s t o n c e m o r e, s o s h e t o l d h e r m o t h e r, w h o t h e n w e n t to the local priest. The priest decided to take the doll and lock i t i n t h e s a c r i s t y. B u t t h e s a m e thing happened to him more than o n c e. T h e y c o n s i d e r e d t h i s a s i g n from Our Lady that she wante d a C h u r c h b u i l t . A m a z i n g l y, they tried to construct a Church on a more level plot of land in the town, but it was damaged in, n o t o n e, b u t t w o e a r t h q u a k e s ! They finally got the hint that the Church was to be built on top o f t h e r o c k w h e r e t h e yo u n g g i r l originally found the “doll”. And there it stands today; many fav o r s h av e b e e n g r a n t e d t h e r e.

W h e n t h e C h av e s f a m i l y, w h o w a s u s e d t o m ov i n g f r e q u e n t l y, r e l o c a t e d t o P r i n c e Wi l l i a m County in 2010, though they had a choice of several feeder parishes for the school they wanted to send their children, they chose O u r L a d y o f A n g e l s b e c a u s e ov e r time they had lear ned to pick the parish with the most confessions. “ B u t , w e s o o n d i s c ov e r e d t h a t there was a statue of the image of Our Lady from Costa Rica in our new parish, which told us that Mary had picked this parish for us. She just let us think i t w a s o u r i d e a ! Fa s t f o r w a r d a

One episode s h o w s t h e j o yo u s c e l e b r a t i o n s i n Uganda for their patron saints. So, we all thought it would be great to bring that to our parish. Fr O ’ Ke e f e, t h e p a s t o r, a p p r ov e d i t a n d h e r e w e a r e 6 ye a r s l a t e r. ” The annual celebration came t o g e t h e r, f i r s t w i t h t h e L i t u r g y a r r a n g e d by Fr. ings and made sure it was biling u a l a n d i n c l u d e d 1 o r 2 p r a ye r s in Latin. “The Mass is the best part,” s a y s M e l i s s a . “ I t ’s w o n d e r f u l t o s e e e v e r yo n e c o m i n g t o g e t h e r. The music sounds amazing with all the musicians who join in.” Soon, other parishioners bec a m e i nv o l v e d , i n c l u d i n g M a r t a H e r n á n d e z a n d h e r d a u g h t e r, M a r i a , w h o h av e d e c o r a t e d t h e p a l a n q u i n e v e r y ye a r. T h e e s s e n t i a l s o f t h i s Fe a s t D a y a r e t h e M a s s , Ro s a r y p r o c e s s i o n , a n d a shared meal. “ We ’v e a l w a y s b e e n a b l e t o p u t everything together with a handful of people - and not always the same folks.” Attendance has been s t e a d y a t 2 0 0 - 3 0 0 e v e r y ye a r. “ O b v i o u s l y, w e ’d l i k e t o s e e a l o t m o r e p e o p l e, ” s a y s M e l i s s a . “ We h av e a l a r g e p a r i s h c o m m u nity and this is an effort to bring e v e r yo n e t o g e t h e r. I t ’s a c h a l lenge due to the transient nature of the area, as well as to how ov e r - s c h e d u l e d w e a l l a r e n o w a d a y s . B u t , a l s o b e c a u s e w e h av e two major language g roups and many smaller ones. Our goal is t o h av e e v e r yo n e r e p r e s e n t e d a n d to get a chance for us all to intera c t w i t h o n e a n o t h e r. ”

G o i n g f o r w a r d , t h e C h av e s ’ a r e a n x i o u s t o h av e a d a y t i m e c e l e bration, at least whenever the Fe a s t D a y f a l l s o n a S a t u r d a y, s o the celebration can include kids’ games, possibly a cook-off, and fireworks. “ We ’v e l i v e d i n p l a c e s w h e r e the patron saint is celebrated w i t h a 2 w e e k l o n g f a i r, f i r e w o r k s included,’’ said Melissa. It is also a dream of theirs to include parish charity drives for those in need. “This is a celebration of the unity not only of our parish, but also of the universal C h u r c h , e x p l a i n e d M e l i s s a . “ We really hope it will help people get t o k n o w o n e a n o t h e r. T h e f a m o u s portiuncula was dedicated to our patroness. Because of that, we receive a plenary indulgence when we celebrate at our parish. It w o u l d a l s o b e g r e a t t o h av e c o n f e s s i o n s av a i l a b l e t o h e l p e v e r y one be able to receive the indulg e n c e. B u t , w e d i d n’ t k n o w a n y o f t h a t u n t i l w e ’d s t a r t e d p l a n n i n g. Fo r u s , i t w a s e n o u g h t h a t O u r Lady of Angels is the patroness o f C o s t a R i c a . T h a t ’s s p e c i a l t o o u r f a m i l y, b e c a u s e C a r l o s ’s M o m immig rated from Costa Rica. All but one of his relatives still live t h e r e a n d w e ’v e b e e n t o v i s i t s e v eral times.”

H e a r t s w e r e f u l l o f l ov e and fellowship as the Legion of Mary at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Lake Ridge gathered to celebrate our Blessed Mothe r ’s B i r t h d a y o n S a t u r d a y, September 7, 2019. Lorna Wi c k h a m , a c t i n g P r e s i d e n t of the Mother of the Sorrowful Heart Praesidium, l e d o p e n i n g p r a ye r s o f t h e Te s s e r a a n d t h e r o s a r y f o r a l l i n a t t e n d a n c e. T h e Te s s e r a i s t h e p r a ye r b o o k l e t that Legion of Mary memb e r s p r a y. A praesidium is a Latin word and means a n e x e c u t i v e c o m m i t t e e, o r is loosely-translated as a g r o u p. Fr. D o r t B i g g s t o p p e d by to say a few words and to give a blessing of the food before lunch was served. It was a potluck event with many delicious dishes and, o f c o u r s e, a b i g, b e a u t i f u l b i r t h d a y c a k e. B e a u tiful white and pink roses a d o r n e d t h e t a b l e. E v e r y one joined in to sing Happy B i r t h d a y t o t h e B l e s s e d M o t h e r. T h e e v e n t w a s p u t o n by the Mother of the Sorrowful Heart Praesidium, but was open to all. In the Legion of M a r y, t h e r e a r e b o t h a c t i v e members who attend weekly meetings and perfor m a work of some kind, such as visiting a nursing home or assisted living place to say the rosary with the members, or even just visiting with residents. The g roup

also has auxiliary members w h o s a y t h e Te s s e r a P r a ye r s and rosary daily to assist the active members in their works. The Legion of Mary also celebrates special feast d a y s e a c h ye a r, s u c h a s t h e B l e s s e d M o t h e r ’s b i r t h d a y and also has an annual reunion of Members in Dec e m b e r. Fo r m e, p e r s o n a l l y, i t i s very rewarding to visit the assisted living places and pray with the residents. Once a month, a Mass is off e r e d by o n e o f o u r p r i e s t s at each of the places we visi t a n d I l ov e t o a t t e n d t h o s e as well. We a l s o h av e a good camaraderie amongst ourselves and get to become good friends. S o i f yo u l ov e t o p r a y t h e rosary and desire to share t h a t l ov e w i t h o t h e r s , c o n sider the Legion of Mary as either an active or auxiliar y m e m b e r a t yo u r p a r i s h . M o s t p a r i s h e s h av e a t l e a s t one Legion of Mary praes i d i u m a n d s o m e e v e n h av e a g r o u p f o r yo u t h t o a t t e n d . GODHEAD HERE in hiding Much has been written recently about the latest polls regarding Catholic belief in t h e Re a l P r e s e n c e. I t ’s e a s y t o get discouraged when reading that nearly one-third of those contacted for the survey claim they did not believe that Christ i s t r u l y p r e s e n t - - B o d y, B l o o d , Soul and Divinity--in the Holy Eucharist. We k n o w t h a t Je s u s i s f u l l y present in the Eucharist because He promised us that He would be with His Church unt i l t h e e n d o f t i m e. ( S e e M a t t 2 8 : 2 0 . ) H e g av e t h e a p o s t l e s explicit instructions: “Then he took the bread, s a i d t h e b l e s s i n g, b r o k e i t , a n d g av e i t t o t h e m , s a y i n g, ‘ T h i s i s m y b o d y, w h i c h w i l l b e g i v e n f o r yo u ; d o t h i s i n m e m o r y o f m e, ’ ” a s d e s c r i b e d i n L u k e

I h av e b e e n g i v e n t h e g r e a t e s t g i f t i m a g i n a b l e by b e l o n g ing to a parish these last ninet e e n ye a r s t h a t h a s a Pe r p e t u a l Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. T h i s m e a n s t h a t a n yo n e w h o makes the time can sit quietly with our Lord, fully present under the appearance of bread, anytime day or night, seven days a week. I remember the day I made the decision to sign up for a weekly hour of adoration. A devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Angels spoke after Mass about the opportunity t o d e e p e n o n e ’s p r a ye r l i f e by spending just one hour a week with the Lord in the chapel r i g h t a c r o s s t h e w a y. M y h u s b a n d Jo e a n d I w e r e a l r e a d y spending extra time at the

parish, as our daughter Natalie was in kindergarten at S t . T h o m a s A q u i n a s Re g i o n a l school, just a short walk from the main church and chapel. I signed up for an hour that would finish up around the time Natalie would be dismissed from school, so it was a g o o d f i t . I h av e g r a t e f u l l y been able to keep to this time s l o t f o r t h e l a s t t e n ye a r s , e v e n though Natalie is now a junior a t S t . Jo h n Pa u l t h e G r e a t H i g h School. I could write pages upon pages about the countless graces t h a t h av e b e e n g i v e n t o b o t h myself and those for whom I h av e p r a ye d d u r i n g m y t i m e i n t h e c h a p e l ov e r t h e ye a r s . N o t only has this time transfor med my relationship with our Lord,

but it has enabled me to weather many stor ms. E v e n i f yo u m a y t h i n k yo u d o n’ t h av e t h e t i m e t o c o m m i t t o a n h o u r e a c h w e e k , yo u c a n s t i l l p o p i n t o s i t w i t h Je sus even if only for a few mom e n t s . W h a t w a s yo u r f i r s t d a t e ? Lisa: It was adoration, a candy shoppe and then the park where he asked me to

dance and then we went to d i n n e r. Wa s i t l o v e a t f i r s t s i g h t ? L i s a : We l l , i n a w a y. B e cause I knew I wanted to marry him before I even met him. Though it took him a little longer to come around to my way of thinking! S o yo u r c o u r t s h i p h a s b e e n l o n g d i s t a n c e. H o w d o yo u manage that? Lisa: While apart, we communicated mostly online or by p h o n e. We w e r e a b l e t o make time to visit in person ov e r t h e v a r i o u s h o l i d a y s , l i k e fall break, Christmas, etc. He came out for my g raduat i o n t h i s ye a r f r o m C h r i s t e n dom and then I went back to Wi s c o n s i n f o r a v i s i t . I t w a s during that visit he proposed. How did he propose? L i s a : We w e n t t o t h e G u a d a l u p e S h r i n e i n L a C r o s s e, Wi s consin and we went to Mass and Confessions and Stations o f t h e C r o s s a n d t h e y h av e a little votive chapel with a big stained glass window of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the p a t r o n e s s o f o u r c o u r t s h i p. So we went to the chapel dedi c a t e d t o h e r a n d w e p r a ye d for a little while in front of

the stained glass window and t h e n w h e n w e g o t u p t o l e av e he knelt down again and asked me to marry him. Fa s t Fo r w a r d t o yo u b r e a k i n g t h e g o o d n e w s t o yo u r family and friends and, m o s t i m p o r t a n t l y, t o yo u r p a s t o r. H o w d i d t h a t g o ? Lisa: Our friends were very excited and my family k n e w i t w a s c o m i n g, b e c a u s e (Christian) asked my dad for p e r m i s s i o n . Te l l i n g Fa t h e r O ’ Ke e f e w a s p r e t t y c h i l l a n d he was teasing me and asking C h r i s t i a n w hy h e w o u l d w a n t to marry me! So marriage prep begins soon after The engagem e n t , w h a t i s t h a t l i ke ? L i s a : S o f a r w e ’v e h a d t w o m e e t i n g s w i t h Fr. O ’ Ke e f e. I n o u r D i o c e s e, t h e r e ’s n o r m a l p a p e r w o r k t o c o n f i r m yo u ’ r e av a i l a b l e t o f r e e l y m a r r y. A n d t h e r e ’s a n e m p h a s i s t o m a k e s u r e yo u a r e f r e e b e c a u s e yo u need to be able to freely consent and that can only happen w h e n yo u t r u l y k n o w t h e p e r s o n yo u a r e m a r r y i n g. What else should couples know about marriage prep? Lisa: There is a FOCCUS

i nv e n t o r y f o r e a c h o f u s a n d i t ’s q u e s t i o n s a b o u t d i f f e r e n t t h i n g s t h a t w e ’v e t a l k e d about and not talked about ye t . M a i n l y t o g e t yo u t h i n k i n g. Example of a question? Lisa: Some are about children and finances. There are about 150 questions. T h e r e s p o n s e s yo u c a n g i v e are: “A g r e e ” “ D i s a g r e e, ” and “ D o n’ t Know/Not S u r e. ” W h a t ’s i m p o r t a n t t o point out is that we answer t h e q u e s t i o n s s e p a r a t e l y. We d o n’ t k n o w h o w t h e o t h e r i s a n s w e r i n g. Down the road, depending o n h o w m a n y yo u b o t h a n s w e r a c e r t a i n w a y, yo u w i l l h av e t o d i s c u s s t h e d i f f e r e n c es. How long is marriage p r e p b e f o r e yo u c a n g e t married? L i s a : Yo u h av e t o b e e n g a g e d 6 m o n t h s b e f o r e yo u ’ r e a b l e t o m a r r y. A n d t h e n u m ber of marriage prep sessions d e p e n d s o n h o w yo u a n s w e r the [FOCCUS] questions. T h e r e ’s 3 o r 4 t h a t e v e r yo n e has and the other ones dep e n d o n yo u r a n s w e r s . W h a t ’s o n e w o r d o f a d v i c e t h a t yo u w o u l d s h a r e

with other couples who are planning to marry and go through marriage prep? L i s a : F u l t o n S h e e n’s b o o k , “Three to Get Married,” has helped me to understand marriage better from a Catholic perspective and I would highly recommend it as it gives a better understanding of Catholic marriage and how God is i nv o l v e d . W h y i s i t i m p o r t a n t t o yo u t o h a v e G o d b e p a r t o f yo u r marriage? L i s a : B e c a u s e i t ’s G o d ’s p l a n and I am trying to follow His p l a n a n d I c a n’ t d o t h a t w i t h o u t H i s h e l p. Yo u s h a r e d w i t h m e t h a t yo u ’ v e c h o s e n t o d o s o m e thing quite counter-cult u r a l . C a n yo u t a l k a l i t t l e more about that? Lisa: We d e c i d e d o n o u r f i r s t d a t e t h a t w e w o u l d n’ t kiss until we are officially pron o u n c e d h u s b a n d a n d w i f e. Is it hard to not kiss? Lisa: At first not kissing was easy , but the more we got to k n o w e a c h o t h e r, t h e m o r e w e wanted to give ourselves to e a c h o t h e r, b u t w e r e m e m b e r o u r p r o m i s e a n d i t ’s g o o d t o p r a c t i c e r e s t r a i n t b e c a u s e yo u c a n’ t j u s t f e e d yo u r a p p e t i t e.

Yo u n e e d t o d o w h a t ’s m o r a l l y good. Not that kissing is bad, b u t w e h av e i t i n o u r h e a r t s that marriage is the proper place for what naturally comes next. This is pretty radical in t o d a y ’s s o c i e t y. H o w h a s t h a t d e c i s i o n h e l p e d yo u to g row closer? Lisa: I think our relations h i p i s n o t j u s t a b o u t t h e p hy s ical but more about getting to know each other as a person. When there is less focus on the p hy s i c a l t h a t l e av e s r o o m t o get to know each other better intellectually and most import a n t l y, S P I R I T UA L LY ! We ’ v e s e e n i n t o d a y ’s s o c i ety that there is very little respect for the human p e r s o n . We s e e t h a t i n the news and we see it all a r o u n d u s. T h e d e c i s i o n s yo u ’ v e m a d e a r e o b v i o u s l y r o o t e d i n yo u r d e e p r e s p e c t f o r o n e a n o t h e r, which is something that is sorely lacking in many rel a t i o n s h i p s.
