One of Us! DENISE REAGAN by ELIZABETH MIDDLEBROOKS

6 April - May 2014 | First Coast Register

Denise Reagan is the director of communications at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville and has been in the position for several months. Although she’s new to a career in the arts, she’s no stranger to Jacksonville’s art scene. As a Jacksonville native and former editor of Folio Weekly, Reagan has long been involved in the arts in some form, and her new role at MOCA seemed like a natural fit. Prior to coming to MOCA, Reagan, 45, spent her career at newspapers, including the Florida Times-Union, where she worked as an assistant managing editor. Her long journalism career has taken the University of Florida alumna to Michigan and South Florida, but she returned to Jacksonville several years ago to raise her daughter near family and work at the TimesUnion. In her job at MOCA, Reagan manages all the communication for the museum, from the newsletter to news releases to grant proposals, as well as coordinates some museum events. Reagan lives in Arlington with her husband, daughter and two cats. For more information about MOCA and upcoming events, visit www.mocajax.org. What do you do in your role at MOCA? I’m the director of communications, which means a lot of things. We’re a small staff so I wear a lot of different hats: I work with media to make sure all the great things that are happening at the museum are getting told on TV and in newspapers and on websites. I work with groups outside of MOCA to sometimes put on events here. Any kind of communication that happens at the museum goes through me, so when we’re creating publications like FORMA (the museum’s news magazine), I’m writing and editing that content and working with our creative director to package and design that. I do a little bit of everything. How did you get involved with working at MOCA and why was it important to you to work in the arts? My background is in journalism, and I did that for about 25 years. It’s been a passion of mine my whole life but along with that passion has always been a passion for the arts. Over the last five or six years, as I was considering what I’m going to do for the next 25 years of my career, I realized I needed to think about other opportunities. I thought a natural fit would be some kind of public relations/communications job, but I knew if I was going to do it, it had to be for something I really believed in and could be as passionate about as I am about journalism — and the arts were that thing. What role do you see the arts playing in building up downtown Jacksonville? Personally, downtown is another huge passion for me. It’s something I’ve advocated for in many roles; most recently when I was editor of Folio Weekly I wrote about downtown quite a bit when I wrote my editor’s notes. That was a huge draw for me to take this job because I could advocate for downtown at the same time I was advocating for MOCA because MOCA is such an important piece of the downtown revitalization puzzle. MOCA brings people to downtown during the day, at night, on weekends, and not a lot of other things happen like that. What MOCA wants — what I want — is to see lots of opportunities for

people to come downtown during the day, at night, on weekends, whenever they want, and I’m able to talk about those things from this job as well. MOCA is definitely hugely interested in making sure that downtown Jacksonville comes alive. Tell me about your journalism background. How has it helped or influenced your transition into working for MOCA? It’s very helpful having practiced journalism all over the country and then in Jacksonville for the last eight years that I have a lot of colleagues from the business that I can turn to and they know that I’m giving them something they would want to write about or broadcast. It also helps that having written those stories, edited those stories, presented those stories to know what those news organizations are looking for because I know what I would look for if I was writing the story. What’s your favorite thing about Jacksonville? There are so many things about Jacksonville that are great. I can’t get away from the water being one of the most prized things about Jacksonville: the St. Johns River and its tributaries, the ocean and the beaches. I took them for granted as a kid, and when I moved back here I missed them and realized you don’t have these amenities and resources everywhere. One of the things I loved about being downtown is being able to walk the Riverwalk and the bridges because it’s just a great feeling to have that resource and have that closeness to it every day. What’s your favorite “secret” of Jacksonville? One thing I tell people who aren’t from here is they don’t realize what a great culinary city this is. I tell people, “You’re not going to believe the awesome food there is here to eat!” And the diversity of the food! As far as a more specific thing, for a long time Jacksonville has really not had a great place to see independent film. When I was a kid there were a few places that tried to make a go of it and it’s one of the reasons why I’m carefully watching and supporting Sun Ray Cinema — because I think it’s so badly needed. It’s one of the things I loved participating in and going to see movies like that. So many people don’t even know it’s there, even people who live in Riverside don’t know it’s there. The popcorn is great! Tell me about things that are coming up this summer at MOCA. April 26 is the opening of the New York Times Magazine photographs exhibition, which is going to be a blockbuster. It has 10 modules, or sections, that range from wartime photography to various kinds of current events to celebrities and sports. There’s a whole wide range of styles of photography and subject matters. What’s cool is you’ll not only get to see these photographs framed beautifully on the walls, but you’ll also get to see tearsheets of how these pieces appeared in the magazine and a lot of times you’ll get some history of how these came to be — contact sheets and letters back and forth between the photo director and the photographer — there’s interesting back story for how (the photos) came together. In July we’ll have Caroline Lathan-Stiefel in the atrium, and in September we’ll have “Get Real,” which is modern takes on realism.

blank canvas Canvas Interiors now open in Jacksonville

8 April - May 2014 | First Coast Register

After two successful years in Orlando, Canvas Interiors has brought its clean, simple aesthetic to the Jacksonville market. The showroom is located next to Scan Design on 8206 Philips Highway (at the corner of Philips Highway and Baymeadows Rd.). Canvas is a completely new endeavor and a departure from Scan Design’s sleek, contemporary designs. The creators’ vision for Canvas Interiors was born in their own home, where simple clean lines and white slipcovers exist in a kid-friendly environment. Add to that a bit of sparkle and texture and you have the concept. Canvas Interiors evokes the calming, yet sophisticated environments you might find in an oceanfront home in Malibu, the Hamptons or Ponte Vedra. “We combine 15 years of knowledge traveling and sourcing furniture from around the world with the creative eye to edit and curate on the showroom floor to bring you a unique perspective that we hope translates to something fresh and new,” said founder Jesper Knudsen. “We are committed to providing you with the design, service and quality level that we feel is essential to our philosophy. We believe if you start with a simple canvas you can create a life of style.” Visit Canvas Interiors at 8206 Philips Highway in Jacksonville, email hello@canvasinteriors. com or visit www.canvasinteriors.com for more information.

JHS Mutt March benefits homeless animals on the First Coast. by ELIZABETH MIDDLEBROOKS Canines big and small joined forces in March to help homeless dogs and cats in the area, Jacksonville Humane Society held its annual Mutt March in downtown Jacksonville earlier this month. More than 500 walkers and their dogs registered for the event and walked a course through downtown and along the Riverwalk. The walk finished at The Jacksonville Landing and included a silent auction and dozens of pet-related vendors with tips and treats. Jaxson de Ville, mascot for the Jacksonville Jaguars, arrived early to meet many of the pets and to lead the walkers as the departed the Landing. The pet walk and festival raised nearly $100,000 to help further the JHS mission of making Jacksonville a no-kill city and to provide shelter and care of homeless pets. GIVING FROM

heart

TO FARM WORKERS The annual appreciation event in Hastings lets workers relax with a party, day off. by ELIZABETH MIDDLEBROOKS

16 April - May 2014 | First Coast Register

St. Johns County residents showed their appreciation for farmworkers in the area with a special event to give the workers a day off from the fields. Pie in the Sky hosted its annual From the Heart event in February, staging a luau in Hastings, complete with barbecue, desserts, a photobooth, leis and Hawaiian shirts. As farmworkers were brought in from the camps, they were greeted by volunteers and ushered into the event. Volunteer Vanessa Skidmore, a Palatka resident, heard about the event on Facebook and brought her friends along to help. “It’s important that we stay involved in the community, and it’s really cool to be involved with this because these are the people who give us meals,” she said. Pie in the Sky founder Malea Guiriba reinforced the importance of the farmworkers’ role, reminding everyone that a person had to plant and pick the produce we get at the grocery store. Guiriba also recognized several local farmworkers who died recently, noting that there is often no way to contact the workers’ families to notify them. Events like From the Heart remind everyone “(the farmworkers) were here,” she said. Heavy rains didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and probably worked in their favor; if the weather had been clear, many attendees would have had to work, said one volunteer. Pie in the Sky is a Hastings-based nonprofit that advocates for and assists those in need. For more information, visit www.hastingspieinthesky.com.

Fairy Garden

phenomena Building tiny garden worlds lets imagination fly by CARRIE RESCH

“Anything can be made into a fairy garden.” “Anything can be made into a fairy garden.” That’s what Earth Works employee (and fairy garden guru) Megan Dooner said during the March 15 Fairy Gardening Workshop at Earth Works where she instructed a group of eager participants on how to make their very own mini gardens. Tiny terrarium treasures and delicate fairy gardens are all the rage right now and are a simple way to express creativity and bring a little bit of the outdoors, in. “This is a lot of fun because your limit is your imagination,” Dooner said. She noted that just about any container you can think of can be turned into a mini garden — glazed pots, a flowering can or even an old boot. Mini gardens can be many things — a true terrarium (just plants), a fairy garden (mini garden with tiny fairy garden accessories), a cactus or succulent garden or an air plant garden. Mini gardens are not gender specific. Boys can get in on the fun too by making a troll or gnome garden or adding dinosaurs or action figures. Earth Works carries a huge selection of mini garden accessories including furniture, critters, fairies, gnomes, trolls and even tiny working lights and fountains. New product accessories are frequently added. They also have a large selection of small plants called “itty 20 April - May 2014 | First Coast Register

bittys” to use in your mini garden. Most of the itty bittys are low-light plants. Dooner said the trick to making a fairy garden is to make the elements you add look realistic, and you can do so by keeping everything to scale. She added that many of the materials needed to decorate the gardens and add a sense of realism to them can be simply found in your yard. Those items include things like sand or pebbles. Earth Works offers fairy garden workshops at their store periodically. A “terrarium basics” class will be held April 12 at noon during Earth Works’ 10th annual Spring Garden Party. Ladies Night is April 24 where for a $5 fee, you can take a “succulents table top workshop” while enjoying snacks and wine. Another Ladies Night will be held May 22, and the workshop will be “perfect container combinations.” For other upcoming classes, visit the Earth Works website or sign up for the Earth Works newsletter. Earth Works is located at 12501 Beach Blvd. (just west of Kernan Boulevard). For more information, call (904) 996-0712 or visit www.earthworksgardencenter.com.

Tips for creating mini gardens:

• Use rainwater to water your plants. The nutrients in rainwater are beneficial to the plants. • If a plant is growing too large, trim it back with a pair of scissors to keep it on the small scale. • To create a scene, use a pot within a pot. • Decide on your layout before planting the plants. Have a basic idea where you are going to put all of your materials and decorations before you commit to planting. • If the garden is going to be outside, make sure the container you are using has a hole in the bottom for drainage. Also, make sure to keep plants sensitive to high light at least partially shaded. • Rocks aid in drainage for your garden. Put a layer of rocks in the bottom of your container if you are using a glass container. Aquarium gravel works well. • If the garden you are making is a true terrarium (in a container with a lid), use a layer of charcoal in between the rocks and soil to help prevent odor and mold. • Think in odd numbers when it comes to plants. Odd numbers tend to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

TNT GYMNASTICS Two new groups will bring their unique sounds from Chicago to the Florida Theatre in April. Under the Streetlamp and Gentleman’s Rule are embarking on a national tour and will make a stop on the First Coast. Both groups made a name for themselves through PBS specials, and both appeal to audiences of all ages. The quartet of Under the Streetlamp performs classic hits from the American Radio Songbook. The members met while performing in “Jersey Boys” in Chicago, then decided to keep singing together after the show got its closing notice, said member Shonn Wiley. “It’s a phenomenon how excited people get to hear these songs again,” he said. Audience members recognize the songs and often sing and dance along during the performances. The group performs covers almost exclusively, because these songs are “so iconic,” Wiley said, but Under the Streetlamp members are working on developing original material that blends both classic and contemporary sound. Gentleman’s Rule is marked by members’ youthful, contemporary style, but each of the eight members has a different voice that lends itself to a different era and genre, said member TJ Breen. “We have songs from the ’50s up until two years ago,” Breen said. “It makes it easy to cover a broad spectrum just by the nature of our different voices.” The a cappella group prides itself on its original material, according to Breen, but they generally perform covers because the audience relates better to recognizable songs, he said. Wiley and Breen both said everyone is excited to visit the Sunshine State after the difficult winter they experienced in Chicago, but they’re mostly looking forward to performing and seeing the fans have a good experience. “We’re looking forward to the sun and the fans,” Wiley said. “It’s mostly the fans, though; our fans are very loyal and they love the music.” Under the Streetlamp and Gentleman’s Rule will perform at the Florida Theatre on April 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25-45. “It’ll be a full evening,” Wiley said.

HISTORY ON St. Augustine Distillery Company team eager to show product

the rocks by HUGH OSTEEN photos by KELLY HOULD

The St. Augustine Distillery Company proudly opened its doors to the public on Friday, March 7 at 112 Riberia St. in St. Augustine. The planning process has taken co-founder and CEO Philip McDaniel and his team over three years to perfect, and they are eager to show it off. “This process has been a blast,” said Brandon Wheatley, the director of production and head distiller at the St. Augustine Distillery Company. “It’s a lot of work getting the place open, and it’s really good to finally show people what we’ve been doing.” This local distillery emphasizes just that: local. They have teamed up with several local farms to grow and harvest their product, ensuring the locality of the final spirits. In fact, Francisco Arroyo, farmer partner and family operator of KYV Farm, is displayed proudly right on the distillery’s new bottles of vodka. Before eager tour participants see the actual machinery involved in the distillation process, they are encouraged to explore a museum filled with the history of alcohol in the state of Florida within the building’s the lobby. The fascinating pieces include an operational sugar cane press, a written history of the pre- and post-prohibition periods and different tools used over the years to harvest and produce the final product. The building the distillery occupies is a former ice plant located next to the location of a former power plant in St. Augustine. It is complete with the original beams from the building, numbered to note which ice blocks were ready to be shipped. Next door is the Ice Plant bar and restaurant, where those interested can sample the St. Augustine vodka in the famous “Florida Mule” cocktail. Batches of vodka have already been produced. This handmade product was tested and retested by Wheatley and his partners to ensure the best balance of product for customers. Batches of bourbon have also been barreled, and will be ready in two to four years. The bourbon is the first legally produced batch in the state of Florida. The distillery is now open daily for public tours. More information can be found on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ StAugustineDistilleryCompany, www.staugustinedistillery.com, or by phone at (904) 825-4962.

HEALTHY

COMMUNITIES

healthy Jacksonville by HUGH OSTEEN Photos courtesy of ULI

The Urban Land Institute of North Florida hosted a luncheon recently to discuss the topic of “Building Healthy Places” at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The main focus of the meeting was to discuss the current and future plans regarding business. They wanted to update standards and encourage and promote a healthy Jacksonville. The keynote speaker at the event was Dr. Richard Jackson. Jackson is a professor at the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. Jackson is a leading voice for reinserting health considerations into decisions about urban, suburban and transportation design programs, rallying mayors, planners, architects and the public to re-envision communities that are good for people and the planet. He described his specialty as public health, or as he said “the causes of the causes of death.” The main point addressed was the health of the city of Jacksonville. Jackson revealed that Florida is ranked 34th in the nation in health, something that needs changing. He also revealed that four of the

most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in the country are in Florida cities: Orlando, Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville. Moody Chisholm of Saint Vincent’s HealthCare introduced the keynote speaker. Moody discussed the success of the newly opened hospital in Clay County. The hospital is free of fried foods and offers ample access to gyms for staff. The Urban Land Institute of North Florida is promoting 10 principles for building healthy places tips in the community. The items include putting people first, recognizing economic value, empowering champions for health, energizing shared spaces, making healthy choices easy, ensuring equitable access, mixing it up, embracing unique character, promoting access to healthy food and making it active. If these 10 things can be accomplished in our community and we can access and make use of the river walk in a better way, Jacksonville will be a leader in health in Florida. WOMEN’S

intuition by KELLY HOULD

Let’s get one thing straight: Beer is not “a dad drink.” Certainly I’m sure a lot of dads drink and enjoy beer — but so do a lot of moms. And plenty of us non-mom women like beer, too. So when a certain event that will presently go unnamed sent out a news release this month crowing, “Don’t forget to bring Dad!” to a beerfocused event, my female coworkers and I balked. (And just for the record? My dad doesn’t even like beer that much.) Even if beer has traditionally been a field dominated by men, there are plenty of locals changing just that. With meticulous attention to detail, the craft brewers at Intuition Ale Works of Jacksonville are creating nuanced beers that rival the complexity of fine wine. And, lo and behold, many of the faces behind the delightful brews at Intuition belong to local women. Members of the Women’s Food Alliance were recently offered a behind-the-scenes tour of Intuition with two leading ladies of the brewery: Cari Sanchez-Potter, general manager, and Robin Rütenberg, creative projects coordinator. Part of the inspiration for the tour came from the misconception that women enjoy beer less than men. However, beer can be crafted into so many different flavors that there is now beer to please virtually any palette. During her tour, Rütenberg explained to the WFA participants the importance of sourcing

high-quality ingredients for beers. The various ingredients paired with the timing of the brewing, she said, yields completely different distinctions of flavor that are apparent in the appearance, taste and smell of the end product. After the tour, the Women’s Food Alliance entered the customer-facing taproom at Intuition for a tasting. Participants were treated to samples of five different Intuition brews, which only represented about a third of what Intuition had on tap at the time. The WFA was also treated to a food pairing crafted by Sherry Stoppelbein of St. Augustine’s Hot Shot Bakery. Stoppelbein prepared oaksmoked salmon with red pepper pesto, bacon muffins with mustard sauce, mini crab cakes, turkey and ham paninis with cranberry mustard, coconut bars with blueberry sauce — and, for the very brave, two types of chocolate-covered datil peppers.
