Botanische tuin Pinetum Blijdenstein
Achter een ruim honderd jaar oude tuinmuur ligt, in de bruisende mediastad Hilversum, een prachtige groene oase verborgen. De Botanische tuin Pinetum Blijdenstein, genoemd naar oprichter B.W. Blijdenstein, herbergt een van de volledigste collecties coniferen ter wereld, plus een belangrijke verzameling rododendrons en vele soorten varens. Wereldwijd bestaan er ongeveer duizend soorten naaktzadigen – waarvan coniferen als de den, jeneverbes en de taxus het bekendst zijn. Daarnaast behoren de cycadeeën of cycaspalmen en de ginkgo’s zoals de Japanse notenboom (Ginkgo biloba) tot de naaktzadigen. Van al die bijzondere naaktzadigen huisvest Pinetum Blijdenstein er ongeveer vierhonderd, zowel uit gematigde streken als uit de tropen en de subtropen. In de botanische tuin staan ook soorten die met uitsterven bedreigd worden. Het Pinetum is niet voor niets onderdeel van de Nationale Plantencollectie. De naamgever, de rijke bankier Benjamin Willem Blijdenstein, kwam in 1883 in het Gooi wonen met zijn grote gezin. Hij heeft heel veel betekend voor de Hilversumse gemeenschap, onder meer door betrokken te zijn bij de oprichting van een school, sportclubs en de bibliotheek. Daarnaast liet hij, meer dan een eeuw geleden, door tuinarchitect H. Copijn in 1911 een bijzondere botanische tuin aanleggen, in Engelse landschapsstijl. Mede dankzij zijn goede contacten met de beroemde Kew Gardens in Londen heeft hij er een exclusieve verzameling coniferen kunnen aanplanten. Na de dood van Blijdenstein, in 1914, bleef de botanische tuin behouden en werd hij gebruikt voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden, zoals Blijdenstein dit bij testament had bepaald. Van 1929 tot 2000 maakte het Pinetum deel uit van de Hortus Botanicus van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Het beheer van de tuin is nu in handen van de Stichting Pinetum Blijdenstein. The Gardens of Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot
The formidable Muiderslot Castle has a turbulent history, extending over more than 700 years. Count Floris V had the castle built at a strategic spot where the river Vecht met the Zuyder Zee, as it was then known. Its most famous resident was Amsterdam author and poet, and son of the city’s mayor, Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. He took up residence at the castle in 1609, and it would be his home for forty years. It was he who had the magnificent castle gardens and a unique plum orchard planted. There are few images of Hooft’s gardens, but luckily he frequently wrote about them in his correspondence, and his friends also wrote descriptions of them. On this basis, the gardens were reconstructed as accurately as possible in the 1980s. Walking through the gardens of Muiderslot Castle today, one can easily imagine oneself back in Hooft’s day. The ‘windows’ in the beech hedge that forms the shady berceau afford views of the Herbaceous Garden and the Kitchen Garden. At the centre of the Kitchen Garden stands a ‘tree of life’ – a three-tiered lime tree. The Herbaceous Garden is divided into four sections, with decorative, medicinal and culinary plants, and dyes. The Kitchen Garden, on the other side, is the Netherlands’ first reconstruction of a Renaissance vegetable garden. It contains many ‘forgotten vegetables’ such as ‘Autumn Mammoth’, dry shelling beans and black tomatoes. The gardens also feature many flowers (some of them edible) which were used in the past, and indeed are still used today to decorate the rooms of the castle with magnificent bouquets and garlands. ‘See you in plum season’ P.C. Hooft would write at the end of the many letters he wrote to friends and associates, inviting his guests to the castle in summer, when the plums were ripe. The gardens and the plum orchard, with its many heritage varieties, are the green heritage of Muiderslot Castle. They give us a wonderful impression of the wealth of plants, flowers, trees and herbs that were grown in the seventeenth century, and which also feature in many of the paintings and on numerous items of furniture inside the castle.
