ouch is an instinctive expression of care. Even a fleeting, but intentional, touch can tug those strings of concern, conveying a sense of care that transcends speech. And when that touch becomes repetitive, following a practiced path of massage, it brings to fore all the elements of therapy; it becomes a healing touch. This healing touch is more pronounced when it happens in an exclusive spa with the help of professional therapists. They are trained to simply ease the stress away or even tackle specific health problems. But what makes massage such an exciting proposition is the fact that it is based on the basic premise of touch, one that can be done even in the confines of ones home. September issue of FAcES is dedicated to spas and the healing powers of touch, which is explored in detail. The ‘spotlight’ is on complementary and alternative medicines, with the focus on physical health, which is linked to mental wellbeing. The growing spa culture around the world and the importance of dedicated spas for men is also the focus of this issue. The cover story commemorates ‘World Sight Day’ and pays tribute to people like Sheikha Al Jassasi, who have overcome their visual challenges to reach for the stars and pluck their share. With Eid Al Adha holidays just round the corner, plan a short holiday to your favourite destination or go shopping for the upcoming Diwali.

Vin

Win ‘It doesn’t matter if you win by a second or a mile, winning is winning!’ – Vin Diesel

September 2014

H

10

e may have started off as a bouncer, but life has taken him on all the right courses. Vin Diesel, who turned 47 in July, has everything going right for him. From the upcoming release of ‘Fast and Furious 7’ to the voice of ‘Groot’ in Marvel’s actionadventure ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’... He is a character of few words in this new flick; most of his utterances in the film are various deliveries of ‘I am Groot’. That though, is enough for his legion of fans; many who have grown watching him flex his muscles in a variety of action movies. Born Mark Sinclair (or Mark Vincent), Vin Diesel is an American actor, producer, director, and screenwriter. Interestingly, he was only seven when he made his stage debut in the children’s play ‘Dinosaur Door’. It was childhood mischief that, in effect, got him into the play. It came about when he and his brother, along with some friends, broke into the Theatre for the New City’s space with the intent to vandalise it. They were confronted by the theatre’s artistic director, Crystal Field, who, offered them roles in the upcoming show, instead of calling cops. Hollywood, however, happened much later. It was Steven Spielberg’s ‘Saving Private Ryan’ in 1998 that earned him his first taste of Hollywood recognition. His popularity grew with his portrayals of Riddick in ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ trilogy and Dominic Toretto in ‘The Fast and the

Furious’ series (from 2001 to present). It was, particularly, ‘The Fast and the Furious’ franchise that won him rave reviews. In an interview to an entertainment publication, recently, he is quoted to have said the following about his former co-actor Paul Walker: “We grew up in the business together, and we became famous together. We represented the biggest franchise together. He was my partner… I’ve been acting all my life and they don’t teach you in acting, how to mourn someone and simultaneously pretend they’re in a scene with you. “He was such a beautiful human being. He was somebody I admired and adored. His death left such a big hole in my heart. I didn’t know whether life could ever return to normal after that.” Vin has also won fame for his roles in ‘xXx’ and ‘Find Me Guilty’. He has provided voice of an animated robot for ‘The Iron Giant’ and the video game spin-offs of ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ franchise, and, recently, for a computer-generated character (a heroic tree) in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Talking about this latest voice role, Diesel, who is father to eight-year-old Hania and four-yearold Vincent with long-time girlfriend Paloma Jimenez, says he was pleased to be part of a movie that his kids could enjoy. Fame, however, has not been easy to come. His initial struggles in the film industry are well captured in his short

film ‘Multi-Facial’, which is based on his own experiences. He followed that by writing, directing, producing and starring in ‘Strays’; but it was his 1995 ‘Multi-Facial’ that fetched him a role in ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Vin, who is the founder of the production companies One Race Films, Racetrack Records, and Tigon Studios, had humble beginnings. Born in New York City, he was raised in an artist’s housing project by his astrologer/psychologist mother (Delora Shereen) and adoptive father (Irving Vincent), an acting instructor and theatre manager. In an earlier interview with a publication he’d said, “I am truly multi-racial. I never knew my biological father. I’ve always had less information than I would have liked to have had. All I know from my mother is that I have connections to many different cultures.”

Game over for Maria Sharapova & Grigor Dimitrov…?

September 2014

Want to know why Lady Gaga almost quit music?

12

T

he rumour mill is rife with speculations that tennis poster girl Maria Sharapova has parted ways with long time boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov. The grapevine is based on the fact that the much-in-love couple has unfollowed each other on Twitter. Their show of support for each other has been evident in the past championships, but they were absent in the stands when either of them played in the US Open recently. Sharapova (27) and Bulgarian Dimitrov (23) have been dating each other since late 2012.

I

f you are a fan of Lady Gaga you may want to know that the performer was all set to give up her career earlier this year. She has admitted that she wanted to quit music during the beginning of 2014, after her album ‘ArtPop’ received mixed reviews from critics. “Six months ago I didn’t even want to sing anymore. I was so sad. I couldn’t sleep. I felt dead. …People get irrational when it comes to money. If you help an artist, it doesn’t give you the right, once the artist is big, to take advantage of them,” she told the media. She credits Tony Bennett for saving her life and career; they teamed up for their forthcoming album.

Eye to ‘I’ with Sheikha Al Jassasi

As the world gets ready to observe World Sight Day on October 10, Sheikha Al Jassasi, a visually impaired young girl with impressive educational credentials and a passion for charity, traces her life in the visionless path and the confidence she has garnered to take on life’s challenges

Sheikha with her Braille Sense

September 2014

“I was born blind,” begins Sheikha, as she, unhesitatingly gets down to tell us her life story. There is no sign of despondency, no ounce of self-pity, as she begins her narrative about her life, which she traces to Ibri in Al Dhahirah Governorate. Being the eldest of the family, it wasn’t an easy task for her parents to raise a blind child. “But they brought me up like any normal child, despite the absence of suitable services for visually impaired in my village. They tried to integrate me into the society; they allowed me to go out with other children, play with them…” she recalls. She went to the local kindergarten but the ambience wasn’t suitable for her condition. There were no special schools for the blind in the country then and her parents had to find one outside Oman. She was soon relocated to Bahrain at a school for blind children. She was only 8 years old and she remembers the angst she experienced leaving her family behind. “I was scared. It was a real hard time,” she sighs, expressing her initial apprehensions and her fear that her father hated

18

her – ‘I told him you hate me, that’s why you sent me to study far away’. But those thoughts soon changed as she learnt to cope with the Braille method of learning. The fact that some of the teachers were blind helped motivate the students to think positively. She studied there for nine years – from grade one to grade nine – and credits the school for shaping her personality and enabling her to learn to be independent and equipped to solve problems. After grade nine she returned to Oman, as she was now required to integrate into a normal school. She went to a girls school in her village, where she was the first visually impaired student. After the initial hiccups, the teachers found ways to help her in her studies. However, lack of books printed in Braille proved to be a major hindrance. But help came from family members, cousins, friends and even neighbours, who recorded books for her in cassettes, in the traditional way. Fortunately, there is a dedicated school for blind students now – Omar bin Al-Khattab School for the Blind, in Mabela.

It was her desire to excel in studies and prove to all that she could be as good as any normal sighted person that propelled her on in her academic quest. Her efforts paid off and she always stood first in her class, acing with 95 percent in the final exams of grade 12. “It was one of the most memorable times… Everyone in my village – teachers, friends, family members, neighbours - were waiting for my results and were sharing with me this happy moment,” remembers Sheikha. This result enabled her to easily get a seat in Sultan Qaboos University, where, fortunately for her, she wasn’t the first visually impaired student. However, subject choices were limited to history and Arabic language in the College of Arts and Social Sciences, and Sheikha wanted to study English language, mainly translation. Following certain tests and pre-conditions, she found placement, but again had to endure the lack of books printed in Braille. It was during her SQU days that she, along with other visually impaired students, established a forum to help prospective blind students of SQU through events related to awareness building in the University and the ways to deal with other students and

the teaching fraternity. The group also managed to enlist the support of the University to establish a lab with necessary equipments and tools. During this time, she also found a way to overcome the problem of answering the exam by using a screen reader that allows the use of computer to read and write independently (Screen reader is a software with a voice; it reads aloud everything on the screen by moving the cursor and by giving instructions by the keyboard).

Career prospects

Although her GPA was good, her visually impaired status in the CV was proving to be a hindrance. But Information Technology Authority,

which employed her after she convinced them of her abilities, initiated her into the job fold with a training programme. Today she is a translator with ITA and also does administrative work. She also tests some of the government websites to see if they are feasible for visually impaired people and is also involved in awareness sessions regarding the employment of visually impaired people in the government sector. In her ongoing quest to help create better awareness and improve her prospects, she plans to continue higher education and earn PhD in translation and also do MBA and fulfil her plans to do business studies.

English language training programme for the visually impaired

19

cover STORY

Al Noor Association For The Blind

Sheikha is a volunteer at Al Noor Association for the Blind, where she started as a member 8 years ago. Following her graduation she took on the mantle as a member of the board of directors for two years and was the head of the women’s community at the Association. She has, since, played a pivotal role in organising programmes and activities; she was nominated by Al Noor to attend the Asian Blind Union general assembly in India, where she was elected as the Middle East representative.

English Training Programme

This year, Sheikha supervised an English training programme for 12 visually impaired people. The programme came about to fill a void in the local institutes

dedicated to teaching English for visually impaired people. “I’d approached several institutes and finally found one that showed willingness to undertake the task and find suitable teachers. It took us about two years to find a teacher and set up everything for this four-month English language training programme... I have to admit, it was a very successful programme,” she explains, defining it in the context of learning challenges that visually impaired students face in the absence of language courses tailored specifically for them.

Challenges:

“I am not pessimistic, but yes there are so many challenges,” affirms Sheikha, listing out accessibility and the lack of independence to move around as the biggest

one. Most of the buildings in the country are not accessible, education options are limited and there is still an element of mistrust as far as employment is concerned. “Employers still think that blind people will not be able to perform their duties as normal people; that maybe they are slow...they are not efficient, not professional in their work. But I believe that if they are given the right opportunity, right education, proper equipment and necessary facilities, of course, they will perform,” she asserts. Public places also need to become more user-friendly, she states, and gives, as an example, the fact that elevators in public places are not voice activated nor have Braille facility. “There are solutions, but it needs efforts, time and hopefully things will be better in the future. Even Braille books are got from neighbouring countries, although now we have screen readers, which has made our lives easier,” she adds.

The concept is simple…pick a few boxes, fill them up with the grocery items, send it back so that it gets distributed. If you want to know more about collection points, then head over to the blog to read more. The Aishelaqtta agenda has been filling up fast with new openings of venues - the Grand Hyatt rooftop Grill, the Park Inn lounge and the newly established BAB lounge at the Shangrila Barr Al Jissah - wait for the review on that one. In line with the new ventures, there are a few new fashion lines introduced into the local market, and others who are promoting new collections in time for Eid. How do I get to know all about this? Well, that doesn’t matter as long as I share it with you. You can find out what’s going on with my Instagram account, facebook and mostly the blog. I recently posted about an overwhelming experience with the Gailani Art retreat. read about it, register for it and go take the plunge into self-discovery and expression. For those of you who consider yourselves as foodies and love to discover new and decadent delicacies around town, then read about the ‘Indian Theme Night’ by the Best Western. Apps are very helpful too – for example, you can take a photo and hear a description of that photo, which is helpful if you are alone at home and need to take medicines…” she explains. As Sheikha ponders over her life and future, she has this positive message to share: “When you are born with blindness, it is quite simple to accept it. The ones who have lost vision in later stages might find it hard to accept. I have met many people who have lost vision in later stages and are still coping to come to terms with their situation. They are afraid. I think the most important thing is confidence. If you have confidence in yourself, in your abilities, then you will be able to achieve anything. You have to believe in yourself!”

September 2014

22

little more than three years ago, Scott McDonald, a native of Scotland, took up his posting as the Finance Director of Shell Oman Marketing Company, which is a part of the Shell Group, and soon found a perfect balance between Shell’s international flavour and the company’s distinct Omani heritage. A Shell loyalist from the word go, he has his fingers on the pulse of the company, having worked in Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan, before coming to Oman. “I have been with Shell all of my life, since I left university (18 years ago). It is the only company I have ever worked for; it is in my blood,” he muses, as he describes

the growth of Shell Oman as a local Omani company with 51 percent local investors and 49 percent international Shell Group investment. “We are very proud of our 90 percent Omanisation,” he asserts, pointing out that his main task is to infuse the international flavour that Shell brings into the company. Explaining further, he says the significance of the company lies in the fact that it is an Omani company with international players and the main challenge lies in ensuring that its operations are consistent w i t h Shell’s global p e r s p e c t ive s . “I interface between

the Shell Group and our local team, ensuring that we bring the best of the Shell global experience to our local Omani company,” he notes. The company is presently focused on investing heavily in new growth areas and is incorporating several changes on the way. “We are investing on this growth and the success from that will come in the next couple of years,” maintains Scott, who has an accounting and finance undergraduate degree from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland and a postgraduate professional qualification with the UK accounting body CIMA (Chartered Institute of Marketing Accountants). He is also the Vice Chairman of Board of British School Muscat (BSM) on behalf of Shell, and his wife, who recently graduated in English Literature from a university in UK, is working at the same School. They have three daughters aged 8, 5 and 3 studying at BSM, and the family shares a fondness for all things outdoors. They love weekend jaunts to different parts of the country, especially to Salalah during Khareef. “My children love it very much. It feels like being back in Scotland, which is a very strange thing to find in the Middle East. We love travelling around Oman. We find summer difficult, as it is too hot, but in the winter there are beaches and the mountains and the kids love it,” he states.

forward to the Ryder Cup taking place in Scotland this month. I do play golf and I have a handicap of 11 which is good in golf speak. I also have a golf putting set in the corner of my office to relieve the tension during long meetings. I am delighted that Oman is now hosting a professional golf event in Muscat each year. I am very inspired by the success stories of small companies that take on the big boys and win. If I could change one thing about myself... I would love to make more time for everything. The Great Balancing Act Strike a balance between physical health and emotional wellbeing to experience an all-pervading sense of wellness

September 2014

May El-Bouri

24

Are physical ailments linked to psychological triggers…? Apparently yes. “There is an important reciprocal relationship between physical health and mental health,” affirms May El-Bouri from the Department of Behavioural Medicine and Psychiatry at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. A graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, she is currently working on a research internship with a special interest in psychosomatic medicine, psycho-diagnosis and interventions. In the article below, she demonstrates the importance of maintaining the fine line between physical health and mental wellbeing to establish a perfect balance between mind and body.

What is the importance of physical health on mental wellbeing? There is ample evidence to suggest that physical illnesses, such as diabetes, trigger psychological distress. For example, some vulnerable individuals with diabetes tend to manifest fullfledged clinical depression. Conversely, prolonged stress, meaning an adverse psychological state, is responsible for lowering our body’s resistance to infectious disease as well as creating a cascade of pathological states, which may culminate into physical illness. If the body feels good, so will the mind and if the mind feels good so will the body. It is important to pay attention to both aspects in order to improve both physical and mental health. How can you strike a balance between both? There is no known ‘panacea’ that has been established to strike a balance between physical health and mental

wellbeing. Despite this caveat, there is a strong indication that a ‘healthy lifestyle’ does the job. Empirical studies have shown that the importance of sleep cannot be underestimated. To live a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise is paramount. Exercise improves the psychological state in addition to strengthening the body and promoting sleep. The food we eat has also direct connection to our physical health and psychological wellbeing. Moderation in consumption of food and vigilance to its ingredients is essential to both physical and mental wellbeing. When we encounter problems in our lives, our gut reaction is to label the problem as disastrous. Seeing life problems as challenges has potential to encourage us to work to overcome these challenges. This lessens our stress and feelings of helpless and improves psychological functioning.

On the other hand, weekends should not be used for oversleeping or overindulging, as these activities are likely to disturb circadian or biological rhythms. Therefore, when weekends pass, we do not feel rejuvenated. It would be essential to ‘take it easy’ during the weekend and still maintain a normal sleep-wake cycle. What are the normal causes of stress? Stress is often addressed in technical literature as ‘events that are perceived as endangering one’s physical or emotional wellbeing’. Scientists have yet to identify why events are perceived as eustress (good stress) or distress (unhealthy stress) in some individuals but not in others. In general, stress is thought to be an adaptive response that helps us to prepare to fight or flee in the face of danger. Temporarily experiencing stress may be nonproblematic, but chronic exposure may affect physical and emotional health.

in the SPOTLIGHT September 2014

What are the symptoms? Stress is a mental phenomenon that can affect both the mind and the body. This occurs sometimes separately as well as in tandem. This means stress can trigger a myriad of psychological and physical illness depending on the context and one’s temperament. Would you say therapies like massages could create a sense of relaxation and help overcome stress? Several traditional practices and philosophies of life have been making entrances into modernity. Some of these have been recognised as ‘complementary and alternative medicine’ (CAM). Many of these techniques have been shown to have efficacy in some of the mind and body maladies that are often impervious to modern medicine. Some of the techniques have been integrated into modern medicine; these include homeopathy, yoga, psychotherapy, naturopathy, chiropractic, energy medicine, various forms of acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine. Massages, when given by a qualified person have been documented to create a sense of relaxation, as it is a way of taking a ‘break’ from the challenges of daily life. There is evidence to suggest some types of massage techniques tend to reduce various forms of bodily pains and to instantly reduce many afflictive emotions. It has been indicated that massages trigger the release of our endogenous painkiller, endorphins, as well as many neurotransmitters that improve our mood. How can people with busy work schedules switch off from the stress and strife of work life? Studies have found that people in higher calibre of power are prone to stressinduced maladies. This view is testified by experimental data in animals where

‘executive monkeys’, designated as the boss in the experiment, subsequently developed stress-induced illness, which eventually resulted in an untimely death. What can be done? Two things should be contemplated. Firstly, there is an indication that successful people have a particular temperament such as a ‘Type A’ personality. Individuals with such a personality are known to be workaholics. But there is a downside to this sort of personality: empirical studies have indicated that Type A individuals tend to neglect their health and, in turn, they succumb to stressed-induced illness. Organisations should be vigilant towards workaholics as a huge amount of revenue is wasted on stress annually, due to poor decision-making, stress related mental illness and substance abuse among these bosses. Secondly, organisational culture should be changed from hiring and promoting those who are hard workers but with little recourse for a healthy lifestyle. This means we should hire those who have balanced life between work and leisure. Current focus on ‘performance appraisal’ should be matched with a healthy lifestyle. This means organisations should reward those managers who aspire to balance a healthy life and work interface. Expatriates and ‘married bachelors’ who live in the capital without their families carry the burden of responsibilities as well as bear the brunt of loneliness and separation. How can these problems be minimised? It is true that some expatriates living away from home may fall prey to loneliness. It is possible that the choice for them is stark: on one side, they need their career but also miss their loved ones. Such an issue needs to

be tackled from different angles. The workplace of such an individual should provide a venue to reduce alienation of the individual, including establishment of something akin to staff wellness counselling. The community of these individuals should organise regular social events to bring the air of ‘home’ to them in Muscat. Individuals themselves should take initiative not to put all their ‘eggs in one basket’. This means one should take time to themselves to open up to new hobbies. Could you provide some psychological/ psychiatric guidelines to help achieve a sense of peace and relaxation in everyday life? It is deceptive to prescribe the view that life should be paved with endless happiness. Therefore, realism is essential if not paramount. Endless quests for material gain only increases craving and endless desire and all the consequences this may entail. Secondly, we should recognise, as previously stated by the Indian Hindu monk, Swami Vivekananda, ‘Pleasure and pain, happiness and suffering, stress are our teachers …. Often it is suffering that helps the development of character more than happiness. It acts as a friction that brings out the inner fire’. Thirdly, emerging cognitive neurosciences have clearly shown that our minds are constantly occupied with random thoughts. Unregulated thinking tends to make us fall prey to afflictive emotions. Therefore, we have to harness our thinking, in psychological parlance; we have to keep our mind ‘here and now’ and worry less about what has happened in the past or what we think may happen in the future. Sometimes our emotions may run astray. However, there is no need to bottle-up emotions. If this is the case professional help should be sought

All things ‘fine’ in ‘dining’

here is, apparently, no comparison between a stage play and a fine dining restaurant, but listening to Executive Chef Sebastien Cassagnol of The Chedi, Muscat talk about the importance of the ingredients that go into putting a dish together, with the emphasis on preparation, conjures up visions of all the backstage work that goes into perfecting an act on the stage. “It is all about ingredients and preparation”, he insists, as he highlights all the features in the new menu at The Beach Restaurant. The entrees, the mains and the desserts come across as acts in a play, leaving the choice to the diner to indulge in a full course meal or simply opt for a one-act play. He believes that all the work done behind the scene, in the kitchen, should be conspicuously absent in the final presentation. Each dish, seemingly, has a little of every act – appetiser, main and dessert - narrating the story of its inception from the unpretentious ingredient to a work of art. With al fresco entertainment back on the menu, following the reopening of all outdoor venues at The Chedi, Muscat, earlier this month, patrons of The Chedi Pool Cabana, The Beach Restaurant, The Long Pool Cabana, Friday Brunch at The Restaurant, The Arabian Courtyard, The Restaurant and The Serai Pool Cabana can indulge their appetite for all things fine in dining. Regulars, who have previously savoured Cassagnol’s culinary expertise, can also opt for their old time favourites, while trying out his new gastronomic ventures. His philosophy of using local produce, where possible, as well as introducing elements and ingredients from his international experience, is evident in the new menu. French with Asian twist is the flavour of the menu at The Beach Restaurant, which is mainly aimed at seafood lovers, with a special ‘catch of the day’ segment that features fresh seafood, daily delivered from the local fishermen as well as imported fish

A menu that is tailored for the epicurean is like a well-scripted play that unravels the plot and the mood of the characters, without drawing attention to all the hard work backstage

and shellfish from abroad. These are available grilled or steamed, with spicy tamarind, lemon butter and spicy barbeque sauces along with the sides, including salad leaves, cucumber, tomato and lemon vinaigrette; jasmine rice; sautéed ratte potatoes; potato puree; and steamed green seasonal vegetables, virgin olive oil and soft herbs. It is the first day of the soft opening of The Beach Restaurant, as we make our way towards the picturesque outlet that stands at the hem of the languorous beach; the two seem to share an old camaraderie, as if they have been part of the landscape forever. The weather is slowly turning the winter way and the outdoor seating, overlooking the soft foamy waves hitting the shore is tempting, but we decide instead to

confit roll with goat’s cheese setting off the lobster tartare with homemade mayonnaise, perfectly. There is something quaintly homely about the pumpkin shooter and your appetite is well and truly aroused. For our entrée we chose ‘Pan fried Omani prawns, marinated in sambal and pepper, fennel salad and harissa mayonnaise’; ‘Blue swimmer crab with avocado, mixed herb and truffle mayonnaise on parmesan crackers alongside honey and truffle dressing’; and ‘Asian style salmon gravlax, black ink grissini and kombu granite’. If you are a prawn lover like us, the panfried Omani prawns will have you adding it in your list of favourites. It is tender and juicy, with the marinated ingredients neatly trapped within.

feast ON

The main, also a seafood tryst, included ‘Pan-fried line caught sea bass, truffle and zucchini scale, spinach, gnocchi and basil oil’; ‘Steamed sea bream filet, spicy shrimp broth and green vegetables’; and ‘Canadian lobster in ink cannelloni, crème brulee, bisque, rocket and micro herbs’. The steamed sea bream filet has a raw look with the skin on, but the broth and the vegetable bed it is laid is refreshing. The lobster is deceptively presented in cannelloni, creating an exotic look about the dish.

To give a fitting finale to the beautiful evening, we picked the ‘Chocolate discovery’ with crème brulee, crumble, ice cream, ganache and meringue twigs. This one is a work of art with the crumble and twigs completing the picture on the plate. While the entrée and the mains have so much drama packed into them, the dessert alone could earn a curtain call or two for the Executive Chef

indulge our palate in the aesthetically designed restaurant. The element of fine dining is in the pampered feel bestowed on the guest, and this comes out starkly at The Beach Restaurant, as the Chef treats us to ‘Amuse Bouche’, which proves to be a literal ‘mouth pleaser’ with the warm shooter of creamy pumpkin and red pepper

How to cook an Omani Lobster… Executive Chef Sebastien Cassagnol of The Chedi, Muscat, demonstrates the art of cooking an Omani lobster

Overview

l Omani spiny lobster has been a hidden gem since the beginning of time. l The supply is readily available across Oman. l The average size of the Omani Spiny lobster is between 600gms to 800gms; however it is not uncommon to see lobsters weigh in over 2kgs. l They are usually caught in the night.

Taste & Texture

l Best part for chefs is that the taste is always consistent, all year round. l In terms of texture, it is quite firm and can hold its shape nicely; ideal for a Carpaccio. l The lobster is extremely fleshy, and you can remove about 350gms of meat from a 600gms lobster. l Ideal cooking method is either steamed or grilled

Cooking

The best way to cook an Omani Lobster is simply grill it in a good quality extra virgin olive oil and finish it in the oven, so as to evenly cook the flesh with a consistent temperature of an oven. Avoid deep-frying, as you loose the flavour of the lobster and the flesh becomes tough. Seasoning: Best with salt and pepper; herbs such as Thyme and rosemary go well with lobster. Sides: Simple sides such as a potato puree and seasonal vegetable are ideal.

Tips to buy lobster

Always buy live, as it is very difficult to tell freshness, even for a chef. Unlike fish where you can check softness of flesh, colour of gills and eyes, lobster retains its colour even several days out of the water, so it is very difficult to tell how fresh it is.

Notes

Lobster is really a hidden gem in Oman and was only recently discovered. Lobster is not overfished in Oman and fishing is regulated.

Price

28

Typically, it is cheaper than the Blue lobster that you will find in Brittany or Scotland where you can find lobster for 22-25 rials; Omani Lobster price ranges from 9-10 rials per kilogramme. Canadian lobster goes for about 12 – 15 rials per kilogramme.

Key points:

E

yes are our gateways to the world; we see and observe the great miracle called life through it. Sadly, they are the most neglected part of our body. We take our vision for granted. Blindfold yourself for 5 minutes and try to move around in your own house… maybe you will start respecting your eyes more. Loss of vision is loss of independence. Care of eyes should actually begin in the foetal stage. Diet during pregnancy and postpartum contributes a lot to eye health. Old age, lifestyle, diabetes and smoking contribute to cataract, macular degeneration and various other eye problems. Check out the major nutrients required for a good vision:

Antioxidant Vitamins:

Vitamins A, C and E have antioxidant properties, which protect your eyes by reducing the damage related to free radicals that can cause agerelated eye diseases. Choose dark green or brightly coloured fruits and vegetables to obtain them.

Orange, kiwis, grapefruit, dried apricots, tomatoes, peppers, raw carrots, green leafy vegetables including kale and spinach, green peas, green beans and Brussels sprouts. They can also be found in nuts, seeds, dairy products and eggs (take them in moderation).

Carotenoids (plant pigments): Carotenoids such as Lutein and zeaxanthin have been seen to protect the eyes from damages caused by ultraviolet light. Lutein can be found in yellow peppers, mango, bilberries and green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, chard and broccoli. Zeaxanthin can be found in oranges, sweet peppers, broccoli, corn, lettuce (not iceberg), spinach and eggs. One more reason why nonvegetar ians should include fresh fruits and veggies in their diet!

Fats:

T he good fat, i.e., Omega-3 essential

While vitamins can be obtained by taking supplements, it is best to get as many of these nutrients as possible through your diet. A diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat, trans fats and sugar will help not only your eyes but also your overall health.

September 2014

Don’t wait for a problem to affect your sight, start taking care of your eyes from today, counsels Anu Bahl, Dietician and Clinical Nutrition

l Eat a good, balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. l High sodium intake may add to your risk of cataract formation. Use less salt, and look for sodium content on the labels of canned and packaged foods. l Eat whole grains and cereals. Sugars and refined white flours commonly found in breads and cereal may increase your risk of age-related eye diseases. l Take a vitamin supplement with your physician’s advice if you believe that your diet may be inadequate. l Keep yourself hydrated. l The biggest avoidable risk is smoking. l Protect your eyes from sunlight - use sunglasses with UV protection and/or wear a brimmed hat or cap. l Get your eyes tested at least every two years and more frequently if necessary.

healthy bites

fatty acids found in fish, flaxseed oil and walnuts, help to prevent dry eyes and possibly cataracts. Eat fish or seafood twice weekly, or consume flax seeds, chia seeds in any form. Zinc: Zinc is an essential mineral or ‘helper molecule.’ It plays a vital role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the eye in order to produce protective pigment in the eyes. Lean meats, fish, nuts, legumes and eggs are a good source of zinc.

Myths & Truths ‘You are not alone…’ that’s the message to around 12.7 million people who are diagnosed with cancer every year Although the whys and the how’s of cancer have long been answered, there are still some lingering doubts and concerns regarding the onset and manifestation of the disease, which has led to a host of myths and misconceptions about the disease. The dread associated with the very name cancer has perpetuated the growth of myths, with most people even forgetting that cancer is a group of more than 100 diseases that develop across time and involve the uncontrolled division of the body’s cells. Fortunately, there is hope today - even for those with a serious prognosis. There are several treatments and solutions available to provide essential care throughout the process…. But the belief, among many, that medical researchers have found a ‘miracle cure’, which pharmaceutical industries are not ready to share, is a big myth claim all cancer experts. The purported availability of the ‘miracle cure’ is just one of the several myths related to the disease. We have compiled ten common cancer myths and truths to highlight the prevalence of such beliefs even today: Myth #1: Cancer is a manmade, modern disease. Truth: Although lifestyle and diet has a huge impact on the risk of cancer, one in six worldwide cancers is caused by viruses and bacteria. Myth #2: Super-foods can prevent cancer. Truth: Some foods are definitely healthier than others, but assuming that any one food could have a major influence over the chance of developing cancer is oversimplification of the disease. Myth #3: Acidic diets cause cancer. Truth: Cancer cells can’t live in an overly alkaline environment, but neither can other cells in the body. Myth #4: Regularly eating meat cooked on a charcoal grill will reduce cancer risk Truth: Cancer risk could be increased by eating too much grilled red meat or chicken or even meat pan-fried at a very high temperature. Myth #5: Skin cancer can be prevented by applying sunscreen, everyday, in the morning. Truth: While the practice is good for reducing skin cancer risk, the problem with it is that it can sometimes give a false sense of security.

Myth #8: Residing in a polluted city is a bigger risk for lung cancer than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Truth: Being a smoker, or even being frequently exposed to second hand smoke is more dangerous than the level of air pollution. Myth #9: Electronic devices like mobile phones can cause cancer in users. Truth: While a few studies have suggested a link with certain rare

types of brain tumours, there is no consistent association between cell phone use and brain cancer. Myth #10: What one does as a young adult has little or no impact on cancer risk in later life. Truth: Lifestyle choices made as a young adult does increase the risk of developing cancer – from the use of tobacco and diet to physical activity and exposure to the sun.

Health CHECK

Myth #6: Household bug spray can cause cancer. Truth: Going by the available evidence, there is no link between household use of pesticides and cancer. Myth #7: Surgical treatment of cancer causes it to spread throughout the body. Truth: Surgeons know how to safely take biopsy samples and remove tumours without causing it to spread.

How important is diet and lifestyle in controlling cancer? Diet and lifestyle are quite important in controlling cancer. Ideally, diet should include vegetarian food with low fat, high fibre and low caloric items. It is best to avoid red meat and fried and smoked food. Lifestyle changes should encompass regular physical activity, walks for 40 minutes a day or any sport with physical activity. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy What are the common types of paediatric cancers? What are the causes? Palkonda, Director of Apollo Leukaemia and Brain tumour are the most common types of cancers seen in Cancer Hospital Jubilee Hills, children. As far as Oman is concerned, 9.5 percent of all cancers are seen in Hyderabad, India, who was in the paediatric age group. the capital recently, provides Obesity could be the cause in kidney and thyroid cancers (they have an insight into cancer witnessed an increase in the recent years). However, in all other cancers, it is multifactorial. What are the global statistics for breast cancer and what needs to be done to improve the situation? Overall incidence of breast cancer is 45 per 100,000. Lack of awareness is a major concern, which can be improved through regular cancer awareness programmes and screening in women age 40 years and above. Regular self breast examination and screening programme will be helpful. Most cases of cancer are, usually, detected in the terminal stage. At what age does one start getting screened, especially in cases where the disease is hereditary in nature? Screening should, normally, be started at the age of 40 for the general population and at the age of 30 and above for those who are genetically at high risk, have family history of cancer... Do elaborate on any latest breakthrough/treatments or ways to prevent cancer from developing? Regular physical activity, proper diet and lifestyle modifications help to prevent cancer. There are no treatments or other ways to prevent cancer. Gene therapy or gene modulation is still not in! Stress is said to be a precursor for many a health problem. What about cancer? Stress has no direct relation to the cause of cancer.

For the ‘Gentle’men Break the gender stereotypes and say ‘yes’ to spa care to experience the therapeutic effects of professional massage and skin care treatment

T

he number of spas dedicated to men may be limited in this part of the world, with most of them housed in hotels and resorts as value-added services, but is there really a demand for gender specific spas? Apparently, yes! Male grooming is on the rise. Whether people dismiss it as an excuse for self-indulgence or look at it as a health aide, spa culture has effectively eroded the concepts of men’s beauty and skin care. It is pedantic to assume that men are shackled by stereotypes and are embarrassed to go to spas. For as the International Spa Association learnt, men (typically between the ages of 22 and 44) now make up nearly a third of all spa-goers. Although massage remains the most popular service sought, men are also opting for facials, manicures, body scrubs and foot massages. So, if you still have the heebie-jeebies about booking a spa session, apprehensive about its feminine scents and floral designs, desist that thought. Spas today are more about inspiring you on an aesthetic level; the ambience within is designed to usher a sense of tranquillity that can only be heightened with the right spa care. The focus is on physical therapy, rather then on pampering.

Tips for first-timers:

34

Go on; make that call to fix an appointment. You cannot simply walk into a spa and expect a specialist to be available to heed your request, especially if you can make time only on a weekend. To make the most out of your spa experience and before deciding whether you want to choose a spa retreat or day spa, call and find out your options. Depending on your budget, fix the treatments you would want to undertake. Arrive at least 10 to 20 minutes before the scheduled time and enjoy the facilities that might be available at the spa. Many spas have fitness rooms for spa-goers to use freely before or after treatments. Maximise the benefits of your facial by shaving before going for your session; a clean shave will mean even care all over your face.

man date a host of benefits, both physical and emotional. Most spas have designed massages and treatment sessions that are aimed at relieving stress with the help of massage and skin treatments.

Spa treatment will help… Reduce stress hormone levels:

Massages are known to reduce the levels of stress hormone cortisol, which helps to slow the heart rate and bring blood pressure down. Boost immunity: Massage can boost the levels of ‘natural killer cells’ in the body; it is also known to boost immunity in people with severely affected immune systems. Relieve pain: Those who have experienced the benefits of massage will vouch that it can help relieve muscular pain, chronic headaches or a migraine.

Enhance mood: Massage treatments

are known to increase the brain’s level of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin.

Still apprehensive about getting some rejuvenating spa care…? Remove those retrosexual blinds from your eyes. Spas are not destinations to primp yourself and enhance your looks (if that happens in the process of your treatment, you surely wouldn’t complain); they are your best options to relieve stress from long working hours. The home-office-home routine, with punishing traffic congestion and the unavoidable balancing act, can take a toll. Taking a regular spa treatment could do a whole lot of good to your physical and mental well-being. As a spa regular pointed out, “It is not how you look once you leave, rather how you feel during the treatment and once you walk out.”

September 2014

Although you might want to shower after the massage, having one before going in for the massage will have you feeling fresh when you get inside the treatment room. Well, the therapist will also thank you for it. Before the session starts, or even at the time of fixing your appointment, speak to your therapist about your massage or facial or whatever treatment you plan to have. May be some of your sensitivities and aches and pains could be addressed through your treatment… If you have any serious conditions, discuss it with your doctor and check if it is okay to seek spa care. Ideally, avoid exposure to harsh sun on the day of your treatment and even after, as prolonged exposure to sun can make your skin extra sensitive. Always wear sunscreen. Whether you follow those tips or not, get into the spa mode to experience

Teacher’s Pet? The relationship that you have with your alma mater is, often, reflective of the kind of bond you shared with your teachers

T

eachers are special; everyone – almost everyone – has at least one special teacher in his/her life. While some teachers are fondly remembered for their friendly demeanour, helpful attitude, a lenient streak or the positivity they radiate; others, who have had to contend with tags of being partial, strict, severe, rude, belligerent, dominating or aggressive, have to endure unpleasant remarks, long after they have moved away from the school radius. There is a sense of bonding a special connect - in topics related to school, and teachers are bound to feature in chats with former classmates. Going down the memory lane with old friends from school years is indeed a very heart-warming experience… As the world gears up to observe Teacher’s Day on October 5, get into the teacher-student mode and take a trip down the memory lane to understand the role teachers play in our childhood and all through our scholastic years.

Teachers as role models:

Most of us are about four or five when we enter the portals of our first school. While the initial days away from home are difficult, slowly a bond is established with others in the class and a special one with the teacher. This bond may grow over the years or teeter, depending on the congeniality factor of the teacher. Spending six to eight hours a day, five days a week, is bound to usher a sense of belonging, making your teachers some of the most influential people in your life. But they are special not because of the academic excellence you achieved under them; for what most students learn from their greatest teachers is not included in a syllabus. What endears these special teachers to us is their ability to help us grow as people; they are the ones who are responsible for imparting some of life’s most important lessons - as has been succinctly portrayed by Mitch Albom in his ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’. So, whether you have grown admiring your primary school teacher or shivered in fright at the very sight of him/her, you have to admit, albeit grudgingly - if latter was the case - that teachers do impact our lives, even long after we have moved out of the corridors of the school/college. It is only the lucky few who are privy to the novel ideas and approaches of teachers, like the one played by Sidney Poitier in ‘To Sir With Love’ or have an Anne Sullivan to guide and channelise the energies like that of Helen Keller.

Teachers & Celebrities

Life rarely, if ever, follows the set path. While some childhood dreams do turn into realities, not all who have nurtured dreams do earn fame. In a normal school atmosphere, every student has an equal chance to excel. However, only few find the necessary leverage in their teachers and grow up to carve a niche in the celebrity world. There is a lingering line of familiarity among many of these celebrities who attribute their success, albeit partly, to the teachers who played a role in those impressionable childhood years. Like the popular talk show host Oprah Winfrey; she refers to her fourth grade

TableT GeneraTion

By Dr. Aziz Alnamani

Many of us have embraced modern age technology with joy and unprecedented enthusiasm. However, there are concerns that we are becoming addicted to our gadgets; frequently parents ask whether it is alright to let children play with smartphones or tablets. Some parents worry about these technologies, as it makes kids less sociable and more sedentary. The fear is not only that these technologies are superseding physical and creative play, but also that it is diminishing the development of social skills. There are also worries about the impact of using the devises on the children’s developing brain. recent social studies have concluded that a large number of adults and teenagers today are having difficulties in identifying emotions in people; subsequently they are not able to feel compassion. Other studies have found that viewing violent images online or playing violent games numb the sensitivity of young people and make them unable to feel compassion and caring for others. However, there are countless benefits that can be garnered from utilising technology. Social networks, such as facebook, Twitter, etc., are creating common platforms of socialisation that assist in exchange of information. Several of these platforms allow teens to partake in social issues; permitting outflows of their perspectives and making them feel that they have a voice in different social issues. video games also help kids to learn basic principles of teamwork and sharing. Games improve kids’ logical thinking, motor skills and hand-eye coordination; other games are designed specifically to enhance learning and innovativeness. Text messaging can additionally be a learning and developmental tool. These technologies are here to stay and have become a permanent part of our lives. We have no choice but accept their existence in our kids’ reality. However we are in a position to actively influence the role these technologies have in our children lives. It is imperative to help children create a balance between their relationship with technology and activities that develop their social, psychological and physical abilities. I believe we can learn to embrace its rewards, decrease its negative impact and raise children who can still relate heart to heart with people, acknowledge and take part in the magnificence and miracles of nature and grow up to be balanced, sound, mindful and empathetic grown-ups. MINI A Giant Showstopper There is something instinctively bewitching about the MINI series that grabs your attention by the eyeball and keeps you hooked with its elements of comfort and congeniality

veryone, apparently, has a dream car - a fantasy car that is not necessarily dictated by the price factor or the brand status. Often, it is simply about the man to machine connect that it manages to establish, persuading you to look for an opportunity to get behind the wheel. Like the MINI series… We share a fixation with the MINI Countryman, a charmer from the word go. There is nothing over the top about it, be it in its size or in its composition, and yet it gets all your attention, whether it is whizzing ceremoniously on the highway or sitting pretty in the parking. It exudes a particular charm that one wants

40

to behold and make it a part of ones persona. The price factor is not intimidating, but it does exude a sense of indulgence, which gives it a not-for-everydayuse look and feel. There is an aura of exclusivity about it; one that we relished recently as we basked in all the envious looks we got as we took it around town for a test drive. As the catalogue claims, stepping into the MINI Countryman is all about escaping the mundane; it is about taking away the office boredom. We got to savour its novelty factors, as the MINI Countryman has been designed with a revolutionary concept. With four doors, an external

length of over four metres and optional All-Wheel Drive, it has a freshness about it that does not diminish its distinct MINI touch – high shoulder line, unique proportions and unique front end. It has been designed with exceptional practicality – it has a sophisticated Center Rail and a splitfolding rear seat bench (40:60) for three people that slides forwards or backwards by up to 13 centimetres. It has more room for passengers and luggage than any other MINI. The MINI Cooper Countryman is available with either a 122-horsepower/90-kilowatt petrol engine or a 112-horsepower/82kilowatt diesel engine. For both the

If the exterior stuns you with its lingering design, the inside will hook you with its space and comfort elements. It comes with exterior mirror packages, six-speed automatic transmission steptronic and shift paddles on the steering wheel. You could personalise the information, communications and entertainment functions. Other visual highlights include the matt silver roof rails and side scuttles with orange indicator lights. With MINI Countryman, all that glitters is chrome, making a perfect first impression. It has optional bi-xenon headlights for low beam and fullbeam settings, adaptive headlights featuring automatic headlight beam-throw control, black headlight reflectors and rear fog lights, fog lights and white direction indicator lights. The glass sliding/vent roof, which can be electrically adjusted from the front and the rear, creates a spacious feel and infuses fresh air within, making you feel one with the roads.

And well appearances can be deceptive. Although it has a compact look, the luggage compartment of the MINI Countryman holds between 350 and 1,170 litres, depending on the position of the rear seat bench. A removable flat load-compartment floor is available as an option. This covers the depression in the bottom of the luggage compartment, while creating an additional hidden storage area.

look GOOD

Let Your Hair Down Right, you have your regular share of ‘bad hair days’…but have you ever had a glamorous modelhair day?

W

hether it is airbrushed, professionally coiffured or naturally endowed, models, be it on print or electronic media, always turn out in silky, shiny, to-diefor hair. Even the little strand, playfully caressing the jaw line, fits perfectly into the beauty scheme, heightening the model’s look and adding glamour to the product. Super models can also make unkempt hair look sexy and glamorous The ones who are naturally endowed with lush silky hair may of course wonder what the fuss is all about, but if you belong to the large tribe of folks with regular bad hair days, then the following could be exactly what the doctor ordered to convert that badhair-day to model-like hair - everyday.

September 2014

For that unkempt, just-upfrom-bed look

42

Wash your hair the night before an event to get matted texture the next day. Use a handy iron to give your hair a bit of a bend. Use also a dry shampoo to give your hair fullness and add fizz serum on the ends to create a little shine and separation between the waves.

For that perfect haircut

Follow the model diktat of never going for a trend-of-the-moment haircut. Opt instead for a classic haircut to get that timeless and sophisticated look with basic long layered haircut with smaller layers in the front and nose-length bangs, which can be turned into any style. It will help you to alter your look depending on the occasion.

For those to-die-for Hollywood waves

It is all about having a good curling iron. Using a one-inch curling iron work on the back and side sections of the head holding the iron horizontally. Follow this by rolling hair under and around the iron. When you get closer to the front of the head, mix up the rolling directions by winding the iron up, down, back and forward so the curls don’t look too fussy. Hold the iron vertically and roll away from your face for a ’40s-inspired look.

For gorgeous healthy & shiny hair

lifestyle mantra

blow the hairline straight using a simple straight-iron press. Use a serum for gloss and shine and trim the hair every four to six weeks to keep the ends healthy and thick. Massage a leave in conditioner on damp hair.

For a head-turning style

The best way to go about this is to change the hair colour; opt for a deep dark new shade. Remember to maintain shades of real colour so that it doesn’t appear monochromatic, flat or even fake at close quarters. Using two different shades - a lighter and a darker one could also work wonders.

For extra volume

Increase the volume of your hair with some casual curls, which have that half curly, half wavy look. First blow-dry your hair without a brush; blow hot air in every direction, including upward, giving the roots extra volume. and while the hair is still slightly damp, add in a little curl-enhancing product and finish by drying the hair. Follow that by using a large-barrel curling iron to curl large sections of hair. With the help of a glossing product, scrunch your hair with fingers and gently tousle it into place.

Some Hair Do’s & Don’ts

l Your hair doesn’t need 100 brush strokes a day; overbrushing can lead to breakage l Do not use a brush on wet hair, instead use a comb with wide-set teeth to gently detangle l Use conditioner after every wash and a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week l Use a hydrating mask once a week to moisturise your hair l Remember to blow dry with caution as the lesser you blowdry the better it is for your hair l Don’t blow-dry while your hair is soaking wet l Take nutritional supplements that focus on hair growth l keep the ends trimmed as split ends can make your hair look dry l Use a hair lifting spray instead of teasing it l get creative with your style and try out different looks

IF cELEbRITIES can SpORT DaRk gLaSSES aT nIgHT anD LOOk cOOL, WHY can’T THE REST? as far as I know, there are no rules against wearing sunglasses at any time of the day or even night, whether you are outdoors or in. nobody can stop you (if you aren’t underage and require your parents’ permission, that is) from sporting the darkest of glasses, unless it is so specified in the invite to a party or event that you are scheduled to attend. You might earn funny looks and snide remarks though, considering how people are not willing to accept unconventional behaviour in public places. Even if you are wearing one of the best brands and have forked out a big chunk from your salary for it, chances are people will look at you with that questioning look: Is everything alright with him/her? May be a cover up for conjunctivitis? The rude ones might guffaw and openly question if you are afraid of the paparazzi… If you are ready to endure that and have the confidence to sport your trendy sunglasses after the sun has long retired for the day, go on, wear it with panache. Remember though that wearing dark glasses in the night could make focusing difficult. but well, if grabbing attention is on your agenda of things, dark sunglasses win hands down!

l The night before, wash your hair and towel dry it; make sure that your hair is at least 80 percent dry l apply a medium hold curling cream and comb it through the hair till it is straight l Divide hair into two sections: take the first section and twist hair from the top of head and away from face; coil and wrap it into a bun and pin with 2-inch bobby pins l Follow it with the second section l Ensure that the buns are secure, as you will be sleeping with your hair in this style l The following morning unravel both the buns. Use a hair dryer before unravelling if your hair is still damp. l comb through with fingers and add a little styling cream to hold

Just TRAVEL

G

for the short haul If you believe good things come in small packages, gear up for a short (and memorable) holiday this Eid

F

requent travelers would have tsk-tsked at the brazen price games the airlines industry played out, even before the Eid holidays were announced. For the uninitiated, the industry got into a tizzy, working out the mathematics of business to push the price of flight tickets literally to the skies. While that effectively ruled out homeward bound short holidays for many an expatriate seeking some family time during the anticipated holiday, it has opened up the option of going on a short holiday to an exciting old/new destination in the region or even beyond. Interestingly, short holidays are ideal, considering that they help you switch off from the daily work

routine and help escape from the monotony of life that is dictated by your set norms. Holidays are known to unleash a sense of freedom, as if life itself has been suspended to create magic. Even health gurus believe that taking regular short holidays can effectively recharge your figurative batteries. The cost factor could also help work things out to your benefit, particularly if you decide to hire a holiday home, instead of opting for a star hotel. According to regular holidaymakers, short holidays allow you the freedom to go as far away from home as you like or opt for a destination as close to home. The objective should be to treat yourself to a muchdeserved break.

Here are some popular short haul destinations, which are just ideal for families: Corsica

A perfect little French island in the Mediterranean Sea, Corsica is indeed the ‘Isle of Beauty’. It is only 180kms long and 80kms wide with contrasting features that add to its mesmerising effect. It is located west of Italy, southeast of French Mainland and north of the Italian island of Sardinia; it is predominantly covered with mountains. Its compact size provides ample time to explore all the corners of the island – from the isolated northern fishing villages of Cap Corse to the beautiful sandy beaches near Porto-Veccio. Foodies can indulge in eating sprees at the several Michelin-starred restaurants and the adventurous could check out a range of water sports.

Cyprus

Cyprus promises to be a great destination for family holidays, with ample scope for relaxation at its beautiful beaches. If money is not restricting and you opt to stay at one of the luxury family hotels/resorts, which offer entertainment for every member of the family, you could go golfing or simply while away the time at the beach. These hotels are also known to arrange trips to the archaeological and mythical sites of the region, including visits to the majestic Aphrodite’s Rock.

Just TRAVEL Sri Lanka

Its proximity to Oman and its ‘affordable’ feature makes it a great short haul destination. Although there is a lot to see in the country, the trick to make the most of the short holiday is to design an itinerary that allows you to explore any one of its popular tourist spots without impinging on your plans to relax and enjoy. If you are culturally oriented, you could head to the Cultural Triangle or Kandy; but if you are seeking to relax and unwind in a cool destination and enjoy nature’s solace, a couple of days in the Tea Country could do wonders. Check online to find a place that suits your holiday need.

Greece

Greece has all the elements of a holiday with a range of options to meet every requirement: from sailing across the Aegean to hiking the mountains or simply lazing around the beaches. With beautiful rolling mountains and picturesque olive groves, you could give your family a memorable holiday at one of the islands or simply head to Athens and soak in the lively city ambience.

Portugal

A host of family-friendly resorts, located in the secluded spots of Algarve region, away from the humdrum of the more popular tourist destinations, make Portugal a hit as a family holiday destination. The fabulous golf courses, theme parks, zoos and outdoor activities offered in this region make it an ideal holiday destination for families. However, if Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, is on the itinerary, you will get to visit a number of museums and galleries, and experience a pleasant blend of architectural styles.

Spain

This is definitely an ideal destination if you have a week or even less days in your holiday schedule. You could select the Canary Islands, which is said to be the favoured Spanish family destination, or go mainland, for a different experience if you are seeking an alternative. There is Estepona on the Costa del Sol for a quaint village feel, fabulous food and beautiful coastline or Murcia for stunning beaches, traditional architecture and a range of sightseeing opportunities

Essaouira

September 2014

Essaouira (pronounced ‘Esa-weera’) is a city in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz on the Atlantic Coast. Tourism here isn’t like the typical packaged programme; it is more about savouring its art and culture, and, of course, its water sports. Essaouira is a small town with good roads, which make it easy to visit different places of interest in the region. Water sports enthusiasts can indulge in kite surfing and the ones relaxing on the beach could opt for horse or camel rides.

Mountain Call Have a mountain of a time during the upcoming Eid holidays with a camping trip at Jebel Shams, Oman’s most popular tourist destination

eather gods have been playing mischief. Just when you were getting ready for an early onset of the most loved season, winter-like conditions see-sawed with summer humidity placing hurried brakes on all things outdoors and camps. But with October just round the corner and Eid Al Adha holidays looming large, chances of a trip to the Grand Canyon are sure to be up for grabs. Whether you are a mountain person or a beach enthusiast, the onset of winter will surely beckon you outdoors. With the enduring holiday mood begging to be capped with a leisurely camping trip, can Jebel Shams be far away… Located around 150 kilometres from Muscat, it is the highest point in the Al Hajar Mountain ranges; it is around 3,000 metres high, with several

slopes and summits and dramatic cliff edges providing trekkers and nature enthusiasts a sense of connect with the nature. It is the highest point in Oman and the whole of Eastern Arabia, encompassing the central section of the mountain range. Residents of Muscat have it easy, thanks to an excellent network of roads from Muscat to Nizwa and onwards to Jabal Shams. There are clearly marked routes to the different camps and most of the road is blacktopped. Only certain portions of the route are rough and gravelly. Nevertheless, first timers need to remember that the drive tends to get steep with sharp

curves, and manoeuvring the car, especially a salon car, would require some expert handling. But of course, there is no rule on the kind of car, unlike Jebel Akhdar, where a fourwheel drive car is compulsory. Jabal Shams, meaning ‘Mountain of the Sun’, is aptly named, considering that it is the first place to greet sunlight at dawn and the last to say farewell at dusk. Although you could do it as a day trip, camping out is sure to heighten the fun factor. If you are a first time visitor to Jebel Shams, the view of the sheer vertical drop from the top of the canyon could suck the breathe out of you. The unguarded rim and the flat plateau will beckon you on and then stump you with the audacious drop that is ruggedly textured with jutting rocks and seemingly frozen ground. Regulars, of course, know all the

With temperature poised to take a dip during the coming months, it is imperative to include warm clothes in the camping gear. If overnight camping is on your agenda, retire early for the night so you could wake up early the next morning to witness the spectacular morning sun. Trekkers need to go to the rim of Wadi Nakhr to undertake the ‘balcony walk’. This overlooks Wadi Nakhr and leads to Sab Bani Khamis, which is a cluster of abandoned stone homes. The ‘Descent Walk’ is another must visit place in Jebel Shams. It embraces the canyon’s edge and takes one to the village of Wadi Ghul, surrounded by lush date palms. There is also an abandoned

hilltop settlement with remnants of an ancient stone fortification. Whether the weather gods are appeased or not, Jebel Shams, with its pleasant clime, will not disappoint. Even simply sitting atop the mountain, soaking in the nature carved vistas of the horizon, would be an experience to cherish

First timers could opt to camp at one of the established campsites along the route to the top. There are a few private tour operators who have established large camping facilities with many options for a night out in the imposing vistas of this beautiful mountain. These operators offer tents as well as chalets that need to be booked beforehand. It is ideal for campers seeking a relaxed time in the lap of nature, as one is assured of a warm bed and all the essential amenities, including fresh food. Coming Clean:

Bathroom Design Our bathrooms today have ceased to be just utilitarian washrooms; they have evolved into spa-like spaces of rejuvenation where we go to unwind and reenergise after a busy day, says Kristine Bonnici

A

September 2014

lthough our perspectives of bathroom have changed over the years, the change has not brought about an increase in physical space, because often, the bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in the house. The limited size of this room often presents unique challenges when designing its interior. It is particularly important to maximise the visual space by carefully planning the position and proportions of the sanitary ware, the tiles and the furniture to be used in the bathroom. Think about the pieces you need – one wash-hand basin or two; will you need to store towels in the bathroom or in a separate linen cupboard; will dirty clothes be kept in a laundry basket in the bathroom? Toilets, wash-hand basins, showers and baths exist in a multitude of shapes and sizes and it is important that the pieces are chosen with care.

52

Sanitary ware: Select sanitary ware that fits, leaving enough circulation area around each piece. White is still the most popular colour choice for sanitary ware. It is possible to find coloured pieces, however, colours tend to date quite quickly. Wash-hand basins: Wash hand basins can be custom made in coloured ceramics or glass and can also be hewn out of rock, wood or marble. Use these pieces to create a focal point.

at HOME elements, which expand the room visually and add light to the room. Add extra mirrors in the room or clad an entire wall in mirror to double the visual space in a small room. Decorative piece: If possible, add a decorative piece to the room – a chair, a wooden bench or freestanding cupboard as a design element. This can be used as a focal point or purely as a functional place to sit or store towels. Lighting: Think carefully about lighting. The light needs to be versatile enough to provide ample illumination when cleaning the bathroom and atmospheric enough

when relaxing in the bath or shower. Place overhead fixture, eye-level light and even light at a lower level to create different moods as required. Storage space: There’s nothing like clutter to make a small space feel even smaller. Pare down on towels and use just one large floor rug. Select one piece of art instead of lots of small pieces. Tiles: Ceramic tile is still the most popular choice for bathrooms, particularly in a warm climate. Tiles are available in a myriad of colours and sizes and it is possible to mix and match both colour and size to create an individual design or focal point. Choose light colours to maximise light and space. Using the same tile on the wall and the floor will also help to ‘open up’ the space. Planning is key; draw up elevations of each wall to make sure that your selection will look good. Think about tile proportions. Tiles are available from micromosaics to large format sizes and the size of the tile will affect the apparent proportions of the space. Mirrors: Most people think of mirrors in bathrooms only for the purpose of checking hair and makeup. But it is also important to think of mirrors in bathrooms as design

Massage Your Aches and Pains Away Master the art of self-massage with a few easy tips and tricks

W

hether you casually press your fingertips to the temple to ease that throbbing headache or push the palm of your hand against the small of the back to relieve that ache, you know your body is crying out for some tender care and understand the value of touch to find immediate relief. The benefits of a lingering touch, even if it is coming from yourself, is undeniable. As an office goer, with time as a premium commodity, the most you could probably do in the massage quarters is a self-massage.

Find out how you could get started with a few easy guidelines on self-massage: To relieve tired eyes

For your feet

Place a tennis ball under one heel and then stand and sink your body weight on to the ball. Slowly roll the ball from the heel to the base of the toes, spreading your toes wide when the ball passes near. Repeat on the opposite foot.

To ease shoulder and back pain

Lie on the floor with a tennis ball placed near the area that hurts most – it could be the lower back or the spot between your shoulder blades. Roll the tennis ball around until you come to the spot that is most tender. Lie until you feel relaxed.

To ease headaches and tension

Place your thumbs on cheekbones near the ears and with the help of fingertips gently apply pressure and rub the temples. Use tiny circular motion to move your fingers up along the hairline until they meet in the middle of your forehead; massage the entire forehead and scalp as you move along.

To relax hands

Stretch your hands and fingers out and rub each finger from the base to the tip, gently pulling and twisting each finger. Now rest your left hand, palm upwards, on your lap and squeeze the fleshy part of your palm between your right thumb and index finger, moving from your wrist to the base of the thumb. Next squeeze the web between the left index finger and thumb, several times, looking for any tender points. Then rub the entire palm with right thumb, applying firm pressure and gliding strokes, from the wrist to the base of each finger. Repeat it with right hand.

September 2014

Close your eyes and place your thumbs under your eyebrows, starting at the inside corner of each eye socket. Press and gently move the thumbs in tiny circles, working towards the outside of your eyebrows. Continue this movement all around your eye, ending back at the bridge of your nose. Repeat it several times, taking extra time around the indentation of the inner eye socket.

rom the unconscious pressing of the neck/shoulder muscles with the fingertips to ease tension, to a relaxed massage at the hands of a professional masseur, the idea that a touch can relieve pain and even heal some ailments is universal. Every culture has taken recourse to massage since time immemorial to induce a feel good factor. Getting the muscles kneaded, prodded and soothed into relaxation is difficult to resist. And with massages getting more specialised to suit the ache/ailment, there is more to explore in the growing spa culture. Massages, per se, are considered to be a part of the complementary and alternative medicine. For massages are not simply about soothing aches and pains; depending on the kind of massage and the kind of problem affecting the joints and muscles, the health benefits could range from headache and anxiety relief to reduction of cancer symptoms. However, it isn’t meant as a replacement for regular medical care and it is best to keep the doctor informed about the massage.

A study has also found that massages increase a person’s disease-fighting white blood cells. Besides, the stress reducing powers of massage can keep one healthy. Relief from back pain: Studies have shown the effectiveness of massage therapy for back pain, with one study proving that it is better than acupuncture or spinal modification for persistent low back pain. Ease headache: Massage therapy can reduce the number of migraines a person has and also improve sleep. A regular rubdown is known to reduce headaches. A study found that a 30-minute massage reduced the pain associated with tension headaches, and even curbed some of the stress and anger associated with that pounding head. Improve osteoarthritis: Swedish massage for knee osteoarthritis - one-hour massages, either one or two times a week – is known to improve pain, stiffness, and function. Reduce cancer symptoms: Used as a complement to traditional, Western medicine, massage can promote relaxation and reduce cancer symptoms or side effects of treatment, such as pain, swelling, fatigue, nausea, or depression. yana Spa offers many options… in fact, there are over 20 different massage techniques and types, all treating different needs and providing various benefits. If you are planning to have a massage and choosing a massage off our spa menu is overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you select a massage that’s right for you:

September 2014

Lymphatic drainage massage

58

Ayana Spa’s Signature sculpt and balance massage consists of a lymphatic drainage massage combined with a simulating silicon glove to aid in weight loss, reducing cellulite, and detoxifying your body through the lymphatic system. When the lymphatic system becomes blocked or begins working slowly then it affects all of the body. All of the toxins that your body will normally throw away will then be soaked into other organs and can cause other harmful health conditions, including but not limited to weight gain. Balinese is a full-body massage using a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen and ‘qi’ (energy) around your body, and bring a sense of wellbeing, calm and deep relaxation. It is often recommended after sports injuries; it also eases stress headaches and sleep disorders, boosting your general sense of well being.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses a combination

A good massage is truly a treat and offers many health benefits of long, sweeping strokes. Choose it if you're really tired and need full-body relaxation. It is best for an introduction to massage, a very good stress relief, provides relaxation and releases cramped or tense muscles.

Traditional Thai massage

Traditional Thai massage is done with your clothes on. The therapist uses every part his/her body — hands, knees, legs, and feet — to not only stretch you but also apply pressure on your muscles and loosen your joints. You might even get walked on! It is one of the most invigorating types of massages.

Hot Stone Massage

During hot stone massage, your body is not only weighed down with hot, smooth stones, but the masseuse also uses the stones to massage your body. A hot stone massage is mostly relaxing, but it also is more invigorating than other massages. The heat helps release the tension in your back and shoulders, mostly, so those muscles can be worked on more effectively.

Head, Back Massages

and

Shoulder

This massage is target relief massage, which is very effective for treating pain and specific conditions. Using either Swedish or deep tissue techniques, targeting the head, back and shoulder,

this massage is very effective in reducing pressure and tension on your neck and shoulders. You will be able to reduce tension headaches. Having less pain in your neck and shoulders may also help with your sleep and overall wellness.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage applies deep pressure onto specific trouble points. It is definitely not for everyone. It feels very much like someone is torturing you on purpose by pushing into your knotted muscle, and the massage can leave you feeling sore. Choose it if you are an athlete who is considerably harder on hi/her body than the average person, or you have very dense tissue and thus responds better to the work. The massage types above are some of the most popular massages you can get, but there are many others. Regardless of the type of massage you opt for, it is very important to always speak up and let your therapist know which areas you especially need work on, whether you have any health issues or if you need the pressure to be corrected, (i.e. if you need them to lighten up because it is too deep, or to apply more because it is not deep enough). Most everyone needs more pressure in some areas and less in others.

Gadget Notes OnePlus Anyone?

Good news for gadget geeks. OnePlus will soon be launching a pre-order system for its elusive smartphone, the OnePlus One. The handset, which offers a premium Android experience for just $299 (RO115), is currently only available via a random invite system. This means that you could own the handset only if you are invited by a current owner of a OnePlus One phone or by entering contests and promotional events hosted on the OnePlus Forums or social media channels. The OnePlus One boasts a 5.5-inch HD display and a Snapdragon 801 CPU for half the price of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. Work on a pre-orders system is on and the company hopes to be ready to launch it in October.

One-Wheeled Microcycle

Hope is at hand for all those in a constant hurry to move from one place to another. The RYNO is a one-wheeled microcycle that is perfect for quick jaunts; it is essentially half of a motorcycle, as it only moves on one wheel. It runs on electricity, and on a full charge it can go up to ten miles at 10 miles per hour. To use this vehicle, you only need to lean forward, and the bike will move. To slow down or stop, lean back. Whenever you need to park, lean it forward onto the front parking bumpers, deactivate the balance system, and put on the break. It can support up to 260 pounds, which includes both the rider and any possessions they may want to bring along with them. It will cost you $5,295 (RO2,038), and there are options to get the RYNO Rack (for your grocery bags) and a Lithium Ion battery.

Now An App To Remember For all those with age related memory problems, iRemember is the answer. It is the world’s first smart pill organiser, which is capable of sending out notifications to your smartphone whenever you or your family member forget to take their pills. It informs you (or the patient involved) of the last dose of pills taken, as well as buzzing you with a reminder of when to consume the next one. All notifications will be sent straight to your mobile device or the cap of the iRemember itself. It will also monitor the different times of doses that are taken, so that it will alert those involved in case a particular dose is about to be missed.

Presenting the ‘world’s first’ 3D printed car created and driven by Local Motors. The Local Motors Strati 3D car was printed live at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) earlier this month. The printing process took just 44 hours. Strati was the result of the 3D Printed Car Design Challenge run by crowd-source automotive firm Local Motors. They claim that Strati is the world’s first 3D printed car, although the 2010 Urbee is one of a number of projects that might also stake a claim to that title. The company also claims that it is the first time that the main portion of a car has been printed in one piece using direct digital manufacturing. Mechanical components, like the battery, motor, wiring and suspension, were sourced separately from suppliers and installed by the Local Motors team.

Aries

Virgo

You may experience some strains in your personal relationships this month. It is not your fault but you need to be pro-active in sorting it out. Money problems can cause an issue this month, and you may be prepared for some unexpected bills. Remember that it is always better to have mechanical stuff serviced than wait for it to break down.

You are not only going to be very busy this month, you are also going to feel full of energy. You will need all the energy you can muster this month. Your workload during October will be tremendous, and you will need to let other people inspire you. Be a little bit careful - if someone offers you a financial investment, which sounds to good to be true - it probably is. Investigate all financial investment opportunities properly, and follow your heart.

Scorpio

Taurus

You will finally have some time to relax and take it easy. During the last couple of months, family and friends have piled a lot on your plate; now is the time to re-introduce the word ‘No’ into your vocabulary. The traumatic events which you had to deal with recently will melt away, and your shoulders will drop and you should feel less tense. Look back down the road you have traveled and stand tall.

Gemini

This is a great time to enjoy friendships so make time for them. Be careful around the first of the month, as there could be something important which you have forgotten. Just do a little check list to make sure that you have completed all of those vital tasks as anything which you may forgot could come back and cause a problem for you. Keep your cash in your bank, and take another look at things in 2014.

Cancer

Positivity is a concept that you are very familiar with, and at the moment you are more positive than ever. You are so optimistic and positive about life and things in general that it is spreading. You are also in a very romantic mode, and are probably planning a romantic surprise getaway for your partner. If you are an unmarried Leo, now could be a good time to propose. Libra

(23 September – 22 October)

There is a lot of new ideas and thoughts floating around in your head at the moment. That is absolutely great but you might need some help channelling your thoughts. Try to find some workshops, which teach yoga or meditation. It will help you to declutter your mind. During October you will meet and find new interesting friends. Some of the connections that you make will be fleeting; others will turn into life long relationships. One of the new friendships will be very special and will either lead to a love interest, or a business partnership. Don’t underestimate yourself - new ideas could mean cash in the bank.

You are working so hard, and your bank balance is increasing. Great news, but make sure the bank you are with are offering you a good range of accounts or investment options. Your body is beginning to feel the strain from your hectic life style. Calm, quiet walks will do, and make sure you get away for at least half an hour every day. Try to have some time away to rebuild energy levels.

Sagittarius

You have spent a lot of time focusing on your home but now you feel you need to step out of your comfort zone. Your home will not be seeing a lot of you during October but it will remain a comfortable base. A friend is organising a special celebration but you are not invited. You normally spend a lot of time pondering over matters like this but you really just need to brush it off.

Capricorn

You certainly have a lot of social activities planned during October. You may want to have a little look at your social calendar, and make sure you actually enjoy the activities that you take part in. If you don’t enjoy them, drop them out of your calendar and focus on what you do enjoy. Remember, that you can’t do everything.

Aquarius

You are not normally accident-prone but the month of October 2014 can be a difficult month. If you are planning to engage in any risky activities such as sky diving, you should definitely think twice. Health wise you seem to have overdone it a bit during the summer so this is another reason to lay low, and rest up. Money is often a problem for many people during this time of the year.

Pisces

Your health is good, and you are experiencing an energy burst from somewhere. This is just as well as you will have a very busy month, and you want to make the most of it. If you are planning to start a new business, keep it to yourself until you have set it all up. If you are a Pisces parent keep an eye on the kids. There is a chance one of them might get sick.

Raucous Roosters

Raucous roosters are driving tourists from a quiet Croatian holiday spot with their incessant cock-a-doodle-doos…round the clock. These annoying roosters have sparked a spate of booking cancellations in the Stomorska resort on the island of Solta. The approximately dozen roosters, owned by two octogenarian sisters, had terrorised two small hotels nearby. Despite being fined over the noise, the birds’ owners, Mirjana and Tereza Novakovic said complaining villagers were simply envious.

Facebook’s Policy Against Long Names Chase Nahooikaikakeolamauloaokalani Silva has a bone to pick with Facebook. Last week, the social media platform froze Silva’s account because of a policy that suspends accounts suspected of fake names. Facebook says they want you to ‘always know who you’re connecting with,’ and the policy was enacted to help ‘keep our community safe.’ But his 29-letter middle name is real and the site doesn’t make it easy for him to prove it. ‘That’s my name,’ Silva wrote in a Facebook post, shortly after he was alerted to make the change. ‘I am a proud Hawaiian who wants to be able to display my Hawaiian given name.’

Ban On Saggy Pants Reversed Ocala city in Florida has reversed its ban on

saggy pants that threatened jail time. Saggy pants are a fashion choice and not a police concern, a Florida city has decided, rescinding a twomonth-old ban that threatened jail time for styles intentionally exposing underwear. Responding to criticism of a law seen as targeting young black males, the Ocala city council voted 4-1 earlier this month, to rescind the ban it had approved in July. The Ocala ordinance banned saggy pants on city property, including streets, sidewalks, parks, public pools and municipal buildings. But critics accused city officials of racial discrimination and potentially violating constitutionally protected free speech.

Grave Situation

In Japan, it is grave times for the tombstone trade. Many are choosing to have their ashes scattered at sea or planted under a tree, as these options are cheaper than a gravestone, which is usually the last big splurge for many people at a time of intense caution over the economy. Jianxing An, gravestone designer, who takes pride in works featuring musical instruments and heavenly gates, says years of shrinking sales are driving him to close up shop in Japan and move back to his native China.

Of Spas & Massages Massage, as a therapy, has been in practice since time immemorial The oldest known reference to massage is from the tomb of Akmanthor in Egypt, where a picture shows two men having their feet and hands massaged. Hippocrates, writing in 460BC, advised: ‘The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing.’ Julius Caesar used massage to help his epilepsy. In South Korea only the blind or visually impaired may become licensed masseurs. Massage therapy for athletes was first televised at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In 1996, massage therapy/bodywork was officially offered for the first time as a core medical service in the Olympics in Atlanta. Bob Hope, who lived to be 100, had daily massage as part of his health regimen. There are approximately 5 million touch receptors in the skin; 3,000 in a finger tip. Healthy touch of any kind can reduce the heart rate and lower blood pressure. Massaging and gently pulling on your ears – top, middle, and bottom of outer earlobes once per day improves your immune system.
