BLUEMUDA TRIAL Gregg Munshaw Turf Extension Specialist University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky Turf Science Program is conducting a ‘Bluemuda’ variety trial to evaluate bluegrasses for interseeding into bermudagrass for year-round compatibility and stand improvement. If you are not familiar with this idea of bluegrass and bermudagrasses being planted together, the idea began with a sports turf manager in the St. Louis, MO area who then brought it to me at UK for testing. We have now been conducting bluegrass/bermudagrass trials at UK since 2015 and have been very impressed at how well the species do together. During the fall, winter, and spring, the bluegrass is able to recover and stay green, and during the summer, the bluegrass adds color to the stand but the recovery comes from the bermudagrass. This concept was the talk of the 2017 STMA meeting in Orlando. We are now seeing this idea on all levels of sports fields in KY as well as on some golf fairways. We believe this idea is going to continue to grow in the coming years.

WHILE YOU’RE AT IT, JUST ADD SEED.

Interseed for improved playability, less downtime. Interseeding is a surprisingly effective way to cultivate a new grass variety in your greens and fairways without closing for months at a time. Select an aggressive Tee-2-Green bentgrass that will crowd out the poa just by adding the seed to your spreader every time you aerify. Interseeding is a gradual process that results in a seamless transition between your old, tired grass and a vigorous new bentgrass. And since Tee-2-Green bentgrass varieties thrive with fewer inputs and shorter heights, you’ll save money over the long run while improving playability and beauty while keeping your course open for play. You’re only as strong as your weakest turf.

Pure Dynasty Makes the Cut for Greens Turfgrass in New Caledonia Successful turfgrass selection is not a process for the faint of heart. Choosing the right turfgrass involves a combination of skills ranging from the scientific and agronomic to investigative and diplomatic. When Cynthia Dye McGarey tackled turf selection while designing Exclusiv Golf Deva in New Caledonia, the list of considerations far exceeded the number of plane connections required to travel from her base in the United States to the remote Oceania location. As a French Pacific island nation, New Caledonia imposes strict regulations on imports. This environmentally sensitive area with clay soil, tropical climates, and complex water issues presented turfgrass challenges. Although a decades-old variety of bermudagrass could be locally sourced and was used on other courses on the island, McGarey wanted to avoid its mutation issues and select a turfgrass more sustainable for the region. Keeping in mind the project’s goals as well as sustainability, water source, climate issues and more, McGarey narrowed her choice for the greens turfgrass to paspalum. Navigating complex importing issues led her specifically to Pure Dynasty® Seeded Paspalum. As the newest and most advanced seeded paspalum available, Pure Dynasty solved the problem of importing restrictions on vegetative product. “The seeded Pure Dynasty greens were cost-effective, smooth, and true with good speed,” said McGarey. Grow-in of the greens progressed smoothly with no issues of washouts or wind erosion that some seeded projects encounter. Pure Dynasty features a patented water absorbent coating called PureCoat+™ that enhances establishment and survivability. However, due to political and economic issues at the time, the greens experienced a period on maintenance neglect after the initial grow-in. “The greens sat for almost a year being minimally maintained,” said McGarey. Had she selected another variety of turfgrass, it may not have survived the neglect, but when the outside issues were resolved and the contractor took over the maintenance, the Pure Dynasty greens rebounded. “When Exclusiv Golf Deva finally opened, the greens were well received,” said McGarey. “By far, the best on the island. The owners were ecstatic with the golf course conditions.” Dr. Ron Duncan, a noted paspalum expert and developer of one of the parent strains in Pure Dynasty, consulted with the maintenance team at Exclusiv to develop agronomic practices to meet the unique challenges of the New Caledonia environment and ensure that the greens met the high expectations of the resort clientele as well as the demands of hosting tournaments such as the South Pacific Open Championship and the Amateur Golf World Cup. McGarey’s careful selection of Pure Dynasty as the greens turfgrass paid off and delivered benefits that have contributed to the project’s success. “In the flat light of the tropics, the color difference of Pure Dynasty helps the greens stand out and provide a better target,” said McGarey. “As part of a resort, I wanted [the greens] to be both challenging and playable for all levels of golfers. Pure Dynasty greens have good speed, but also allow the ball to slightly stick.” This helps players when the prevailing ocean breezes kick up in the afternoon. I got my wish to have paspalum greens in New Caledonia.” Pure Dynasty Seeded Paspalum was developed by Pure-Seed Testing, Inc. and is distributed worldwide by Atlas Turf International.
