The Journey Through Our Factory

1 - Prime European Beech is sourced from sustainable sources.

2 - Component parts are CNC machined and stacked ready for assembly.

3 - Frames have dowelled, mortice & tenon joints and the braces are glued and screwed.

4 - Two coats of lacquer are applied.

5 - Chairs are de-nibbed to ensure frames are smooth before final coat of lacquer.

6 - Fabrics are perched, measured and random fire tested before upholstery.

7 - Many of the covers are top stitched.

8 - Chairs awaiting final inspection before despatch.

9 - All furniture is delivered blanket wrapped by Knightsbridge drivers and vehicles.

With Hospital-Acquired Infection under close scrutiny, including highly resistant 'superbugs' such as MRSA, the cleanliness of hospitals and healthcare environments is a matter of great concern for healthcare professionals and patients alike. Knightsbridge Furniture designs and manufactures healthcare furniture based on best practice infection control methods and we are continually developing new technologies and manufacturing methods to help in the constant fight against HAIs.

Fabrics

Prevention through Design and Development

Fabric choice is a crucial element in protecting patients, visitors and healthcare professionals from Hospital-Acquired Infections. Knightsbridge Furniture is able to offer you a wide choice of soft fabrics and vinyls specially designed to cope with the demands of healthcare environments, whilst offering a broad choice of colours and styles. (Please refer to page 196 for more details on choosing the right fabric to meet your infection control needs)

Our designers put a great deal of effort into ensuring that our chair designs help healthcare professionals fight infection issues. Designed to be cleaned as easily and thoroughly as possible, our chairs are also designed to stand up to the daily strains of ward life and are made to the toughest British Strength and Stability Standards. Design features of Knightsbridge Furniture chairs include:

Biocidal Wood Lacquer Using Becker Acroma Hygiene+ biocidal wood lacquer, Knightsbridge Furniture can provide not only protection against bacteria, but also prevention! Clinically proven to kill 99% of bacteria over a 24 hour period, Hygiene+ is constantly working in the fight against bacteria, germs and viruses. Becker Acroma’s lacquer has been tested and independently certified by Industrial Microbiological Services Ltd. Hygiene+ has been tested against the following bacteria: • Listeria monocytogenes • Staphylococcus aureus • Salmonella typhimurium • Klebisella pneumoniae • Aspergillus niger • Pseudomonas aeruginosa • Bacillus cereus • Escherichia coli • Staphylococcus aureus Methicillin-Resistant Strain (MRSA)

• Seams positioned away from high contact areas • A special hygiene gap between the seat and back prevents bacteria collecting and allows for easy cleaning • Completely removable seat cushions allow easy cleaning of the chairs and fabrics • Use of Beckers Acroma biocidal wood lacquer to help kill any bacteria which may come into contact with the chair frame • Absence of stitching detail on the chair back which could harbour bacteria • Castors (where included) are easy-clean • The development of infection control seating trays assist in cleaning & help to prevent the spread of infection • All visitor chairs are also designed with the same principles in mind

Pressure Care Management We believe that, used in conjunction with recognised nursing interventions, appropriate seating can act as an aid to assist nurses and clinical specialists with the issue of pressure care management. Chair Design for Tissue Viability

Interface Pressure Mapping Trial

Correct posture is one of the most important factors in preventing the development of pressure ulcers. Sitting correctly ensures that weight is evenly distributed and shearing forces are reduced.

The three pressure maps below illustrate the amount of pressure sitting on a conventional CMHR seat cushion (map 1), compared with an STM castellated seat cushion (map 2) and a Reflexion seat cushion (map 3) after a period of 16 minutes.

Because we design all of our chairs in-house, we are able to incorporate the following features to encourage good posture: • Excellent lumbar and back support • Correct back and seat rake to prevent sliding forwards • Option of Patient seating in 3 seat heights • Patient seating with variable seat depths • Waterfall seat cushion to reduce pressure on the back of the knees

All tests were conducted using our Hamilton Patient Chair with an identical protocol applied to each. The lightest areas of contact are shown in blue, whilst the heaviest are shown in yellow. 1 - Pressure Mapping Conventional Cushion

1 - Conventional Pressure Distribution Cushion Knightsbridge offer a selection of integral pressure distribution cushions, suitable for up to high at risk users. Refer to the patient seating specification sheet on page 20 of the brochure to make your selection.

2 - Castellated Pressure Distribution Cushion Our castellated foam cushion, developed initially for wheel chair users by STM Healthcare was independently evaluated by the Medical Devices Agency in 1997. (1) The range has been improved to withstand patient weights of up to 20 stones (127kgs) incorporating a unique spring like foam profile to improve comfort and pressure distribution. These new designs have been clinically evaluated by the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at Salisbury District Hospital, with further tests being carried out at Salford University.(2)

3 - Reflexion Pressure Distribution Cushion Reflexion foam moulds itself to the contours of the user, this helps to spread the body weight more evenly across a greater surface area. Reflexion foams conform to BS3379 class "V", intended for use in very severe applications. (3)

Extensive Range In addition to the standard waterfall shaped seat cushions Knightsbridge can also offer a range of Pommel shaped pressure distribution cushions including a high risk gel filled option. We recommend the use of a waterproof, multi stretch, vapour permeable fabric for use with all our pressure distribution cushions. Case Study - Norbury Ward ‘Healing Environment’ South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Furniture by Knightsbridge has been installed in a secure unit for people with severe mental health problems, exemplifying the importance which surroundings play in influencing behaviour. Working with interior architects Nightingale Associates, Knightsbridge created seating and dining furniture for the Norbury Ward ‘Healing Environment’ project - a King’s Fund initiative for South Staffordshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust - which combines functionality and durability with design flair. Living space within the unit has been populated by settees, armchairs and footstools from the Knightsbridge Shelley, Vienna and Bugatti Ranges. To the company’s ‘Extreme’ specification, the weighted seating is tested to the highest standards for strength and stability and is without metal components, visible stitching or concealment pockets. Yet it is far from utilitarian in style: the contemporary lines and use of leather upholstery has been justified by the residents’ respectful response.

Case Study - Westland Court Bield Housing Association, Glasgow

Seating and tables from the Knightsbridge Care portfolio are fostering a welcoming ambience in Westland Court, a complex of self-catering sheltered accommodation run by Bield Housing Association in Glasgow. The order included examples from the Selkirk range, which was developed by Knightsbridge in response to the design requirements of Bield scheme managers. With high-back and mid-back armchairs in standard and petite sizes, Selkirk features shaped arms to allow independent rising, a sprung seat to ensure a comfortable sitting position and a reversible cushion to keep wear to a minimum. Impervious and anti-bacterial fabrics are amongst a variety of upholstery options. The Westland Court order also included Knightsbridge Rossetti and Gavotte armchairs, together with Melrose settees and armchairs, all complemented by the contemporary lines and natural wood finish of Balerno coffee tables.

Case Study - The Herschel Prins Centre Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust

Seating by Knightsbridge Furniture is playing a pivotal role in establishing a therapeutic environment within The Herschel Prins Centre, a pioneering mental health complex in Leicestershire. Working to an ‘Enhancing the Healing Environment’ brief, Knightsbridge engaged with the centre in developing colour and design stories to engender a positive response in a challenging environment. Contributing to the ambience are Melrose club chairs and settees in red hide, Elliot and Katrine dining chairs in cream/navy faux leather, Bugatti easy seating and Byron armchairs. Occasional seating is provided by Islay chairs in waterproof soft covers, with bedrooms featuring Hamilton upright chairs in easy-clean vinyl and the ‘time-out’ space incorporating Thorpe chairs to the ‘Extreme’ specification. Staff areas also reflect Knightsbridge input: offices are equipped with Harris seating, complemented by Nimbus armchairs in meeting rooms and Owen chairs in clinical sectors.

Once you’ve found the perfect furniture for your project it’s time to select from the wide choice of fabrics, colours and patterns available. The right choice of fabric is vital to ensure that your furniture not only looks great but also that it meets staff and service-user needs. To help you make your choice, consider the following: • Infection control requirements - do you need anti-microbial properties built in? • Should the fabric be waterproof? • What atmosphere are you trying to create? Soft, luxurious, formal, informal, etc

Types of fabric • Vinyl

• Soft Fabrics

Vinyl is practical, low maintenance and is available in a wide range of colours and textures. Durable, fire retardant and liquid repellent, our stock vinyl ranges incorporate anti-microbial ingredients to kill a wide range of bacteria, including MRSA and e-coli and are resistant to many common stains, including urine, mild alkalis/acids, beverages and most common household stains.

Where usage is less severe, soft covers can create a more domestic environment and offer a wide selection of designs for traditional or contemporary interiors.

• Soft Waterproof Fabrics Available in a wide spectrum of colours and designs, soft waterproof fabrics can be used to create relaxing environments without compromising the need for waterproof coverings. Integral anti-microbial ingredients make the fabrics effective against bacteria (including MRSA and e-coli).

• Hide We offer a range of the finest leathers in a wide variety of colours. Regular care of leather will ensure its lasting quality.

• Removable Loose Covers All our removable loose cover suites incorporate a flame retardant, waterproof, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial interliner. Loose covers are machine washable at 40ºC. Spare sets of loose covers can be ordered separately.

• Specialist Coverings Including fabrics such as: • Waterproof • Multi-stretch • Vapour permeable fabric For use on all of our pressure distribution cushions

• Faux Hide

Finally, select your wood finish

A luxurious alternative to vinyls and soft covers, faux hides come in a range of colours. Designed for contract use, faux hides have high abrasion resistance, water resistance and are treated with antimicrobial ingredients.

Choose from our selection of wood finishes (available on all our ranges unless specified otherwise), which include Hygiene+ anti-microbial protection to kill bacteria 24 hours a day.
