Archway Golf Tournament includes 50/50 raffle and online auction

The Archway Community Services Charity Golf Tournament is returning for its 7th year on June 25th. While the tournament is sold out with 144 golfers, the accompanying 50/50 online raffle and online auction are open to the public.

“Last year we had a fundraising record of $101,500 but we’d love to beat that record again,” said Steve Carlton, Archway’s Past Board President and chair of the tournament organizing committee. “The need in our community is increasing every year which highlights the importance of fundraisers like these to help keep critical programs operating.”

One of the many programs being featured on the course this year is Meals on Wheels, which offers nutritious fresh and frozen meal options for those unable to cook or shop for themselves. “Every meal delivered represents a commitment to enhancing our clients’ quality of life, fostering independence, and providing a lifeline to those who need it most,” said Alida Swanson, Supervisor for Senior Services at Archway. “Supporting programs like this and others at Archway creates a stronger, more

connected community,” said Carlton. The tournament also supports Archway programs such as Best for Babies, Community Van, Immigrant Youth Services and more.

Mike Gibson, a realtor with Sutton Group West Coast Realty shared why they are returning as the title sponsor for the fourth year. “Archway is a tremendous organization that strengthens the neighbourhoods we serve. These programs improve the quality of life for everyone, and Archway gives us the opportunity to help those that need it most.” The 50/50 raffle gives participants the opportunity to win up to $10,000 if all tickets are sold.

Items up for auction include gift baskets, farm fresh blueberries, Abbotsford and Vancouver Canucks game experiences, vintage hockey cards, hotel stays, and much more. For the third year, the University of the Fraser Valley has donated a semester’s tuition with up to 15 credits valued at more than $2,700.

Raffle tickets can be found at Archway.ca/Raffle and the auction can be found at Givergy.ca/ArchwayGolf

2024. The 50/50 raffle will close after the tournament on June 25th at 7:30pm and the auction will close on June 25th at 8pm.

The event, presented by Sutton Group West Coast Realty and supported by the Abbotsford Canucks, will take place at the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club.

Abbotsford Regional Hospital Receives

Generous Donation from Sandra Schmirler Foundation

Thanks to funding from the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Abbotsford Regional

Hospital will receive a new ventilator for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Each day our Fraser Health team provide lifesaving care for humans, even the tiniest ones. And to achieve the best outcome for high-risk babies our local hospitals require the latest medical equipment.

Ventilators are used for life support to help babies’ breathe better as their lungs are not working well enough. In many cases premature babies require the support of a ventilator (bedside machine) to help them receive good air, oxygen, to the lungs.

Abbotsford Regional Hospital thanks to the generosity of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, is now able

to provide neonatal patients with life saving equipment to help protect their vital organs.

“We want all babies born too soon, too small or too sick to have the chance to grow up and be champions”, says Darren McEwen, Executive Director of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.

“By continuing to recognize and celebrate Sandra Schmirler’s love of family, we are grateful that we can make a difference in Abbotsford and in hospitals all across Canada”.

State-of-the-art medical equipment helps our health care team save lives. If you would like to support our continued effort in helping save lives please get in touch with Dr. Jassal at Lakhbir.Jassal@fraserhealth.ca or visit fvhcf.ca

Indigenous peoples still face employment barriers, but free programs can help

(NC) As Canadians, we like to think that our country celebrates diversity and provides equal opportunities for everyone. But the truth is that many groups experience discrimination and obstacles to success.

A recent survey of people who identify as Indigenous Canadians sheds light on the challenges they confront daily, including experiences with prejudice in the workplace. Nearly 59 per cent have experienced discrimination in their current jobs, and more than half admitted to playing down their Indigenous backgrounds to fit in better at work.

Some industries can be less welcoming than others. Lack of access to education due to economic hurdles is one of the main barriers preventing Indigenous peoples from pursuing careers in technology. At the same time, of those surveyed, 75 per cent believe stereotypes

impact perceptions of their capabilities in the IT sector.

Fortunately, one non-profit is working to support Indigenous peoples with the tools and training needed to flourish in the tech industry.

“We believe in holistic education, where we integrate technology-based learning with essential job skills like resume building and interview training,” explains Pablo Listingart, founder and executive director of ComIT. “Through remote programs, we extend access to quality education, bridging gaps for those in remote communities where opportunities are scarce.”

More than providing free education, the non-profit aims to develop a community that links people struggling to overcome employment barriers with companies looking for skilled workers. Learn more about free tech training at comit.org.

Attend an Official Community Plan Update Event

The Official Community Plan (OCP) Update is in its second phase of a year-long work program, and we want you to get involved.

In Phase 2, the Project Team will engage with Mission Council, Council committees, residents, business groups and others to clarify a new vision for the OCP. During this work phase the consultant has prepared new plans for discussion at different events from June 17 – 19.

Among the plans prepared are Concept Plans that will show different area where growth could occur in Mission. These plans are very general in design and will help both Mission Council, residents and others to share their comments about the best places in Mission where new growth can occur.

In addition to these plans, the consultant is preparing a set of Land Use Scenarios that provide more detailed information than the Concept Plans.

These maps will be presented to Mission Council at meetings on Monday, June 17th after which Council will share them with the community to

The Land Use Scenarios show areas where growth could occur, in a stylized map format, illustrating a core area, areas with different residential densities and building types, parks and protected areas, employment lands, and major road/bus transit corridors.

seek ideas for use in preparing a draft OCP land use plan.

This is an exciting and pivotal time in the preparation of Mission’s new OCP, and your ideas are essential for the new plan that will guide city growth over the next two decades.

What We Heard in Phase 1

Recent public engagement suggests the existing vision still resonates with many residents. Over 60% of survey respondents agree or strongly agree with the direction it sets. Furthermore, generally, few respondents (17%) disagreed or strongly disagreed with the direction set out in Mission’s current vision.

However, responses from residents, including those who feel aligned with the current vision, feel that the vision itself has not been fully reflected in some decisions made since the OCP was adopted in 2018. Transportation and housing were areas highlighted in the comments as most concerning. Many respondents also felt the current vision could be improved by placing more emphasis on recreation, parks, and open spaces within the community.

BCFED calls for full employment rights for

ride-hail and food delivery

workers

Despite new provincial regulations introduced today, ride-hail and food delivery workers still won't receive the same workplace benefits and protections as other workers in BC, the BC Federation of Labour said today.

“Under the rules announced today, ride-hail and food delivery workers are being denied basic protections like paid sick leave, statutory holiday pay and overtime,” said BCFED President Sussanne Skidmore.

Along with community organizations and ride-hail and food delivery workers, the BCFED has fought for several years to ensure these workers receive equal workplace protection. During the provincial government’s recent consultation process, the BCFED shared extensive evidence about the daily challenges of online platform work, including long hours, poor pay, lack of health and safety protections, and few benefits.

“Ride-hail and food delivery workers deserve dignity, fair compensation, safe working conditions and the ability to fully participate in community and family life. They deserve the same standard protections offered to other workers in our province,” said Skidmore.

the minimum wage, Skidmore said it’s far from enough.

“The evidence from other jurisdictions shows that, once you count all the time worked, that small top-up won’t even come close to bringing a typical worker up to the minimum wage — let alone ever earning more,” she said. “And with the expense reimbursement amounts set so low, vehicle drivers will still be subsidizing their employers' business expenses.”

“This is already precarious work. And this is a workforce that is predominantly made up of racialized workers and newcomers to our province,” said BCFED Secretary-Treasurer Hermender Singh Kailley.

“We are deeply concerned that low pay and limited rights will entrench the precarity of this work and the systemic discrimination these workers experience. This is an improvement over their current conditions, but it still falls short of the full, equal protections every worker should receive.”

nvyN zYNtl kyar plYn vfly mrIjL lY rhy hF.

She cited the “engaged time” model promoted by employers and adopted by the government, in which workers will be paid only for a portion of the time they work. Although the government proposed to compensate for that discrepancy with a top-up to

He added that the BCFED welcomed measures such as the long-overdue coverage under workers’ compensation, but said unions will be watching to see if the final regulations would cover them for injuries sustained outside of “engaged time.”

The BC Federation of Labour continues to advocate for workers to have full access to bargaining rights and full protections under the Employment Standards Act.

2024 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Premium Edition. The legend continues.

New for 2024, the Ford Mustang is now in its seventh generation and returns with some tweaking to the styling grille design and the rear signature tri-bar lighting. The Ecoboost and V8 powered GT models have their own unique front ends. The GT with a more aggressive unit and increased airflow cooling. The car’s also have new hood vents and redesigned front splitters. There is a new range of alloy wheels from 17inch in standard size to 19-inchers for the GT, and with optional 20inch wheels. Interior wise, there is a “fighter-jet-inspired” cockpit offering two curved displays that can be driver customized. The new, 2024 Mustang is available in fastback and convertible form. In terms of looks- it just kills simply!

When it comes to engine choice, the top dog motor is the fourth- generation 5.0-litre Coyote V8 gasoline unit with 480 - 486 horsepower. Buyers who want greater fuel efficiency can still opt for the EcoBoost model, powered by a new 315-hp turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder engine mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile the high-performance Mustang Dark Horse version has 500 hp and 418 lb-ft of torque.

Talking about transmissions - the 5.0 V8 GT version does have an optional manual transmission — a standard six-speed with a rev-matching feature that helps hold engine rpm when

the clutch is engaged, offering peak torque between gear changes. The 10-speed automatic gearbox is also available with configurable drive modes.

New interior highlights include the Jet fighter style dashboard with twin digital instrument cluster that can be optionally configured to flow into a 13.2-inch Sync 4 centre stack behind a single integrated glass panel.

Physical hard touch buttons and knobs for such features as radio and climate controls, have been deleted. The 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster is customizable to display different animated designs and new drive-mode visuals with video game like graphics.

In terms of safety the Mustang comes equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 and the full roster of active and passive safety aids. Standard equipment levels are high and there is a range of options and upgrades. Mustang GT and EcoBoost models are both available with an optional GT Performance Pack, which adds features such as: a front tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential and optional MagneRide active suspension, and wider rear wheels. Larger front and rear Brembo brakes are also added.

The GT Performance Pack also adds brake ducts for better more cooling, along with an as standard auxiliary engine oil cooler. Recaro seats and active exhaust are also offered. The

all-new Mustang has a price starting at $37,000 for the Fastback with the 2.3L EcoBoost engine. It is $54,400 for the as tested V8-powered GT Premium. Convertible models start at $43,900 - $60,000.

On the road, whatever model you drive, be assured of total fun. The Mustang is a comfortable urban cruiser, while adjustable drive modes can offer quicker steering, more engine response, and faster transmission shifts. When hooked to the 6-speed manual tranny as on our tester, the car offers blinding shifts and acceleration. The clutch is firm and positive, while the manual shifts are quick and glitch free, The suspension and handling upgrades really elevate the performance driving aspect. One new feature is the Active Pothole Mitigation, included with the Performance Package, which continually monitors suspension, body, steering and braking input and adjusts suspension responses. Meanwhile the larger upgraded Brembo brakes offer superb stopping. Steering is communicative, with a satisfying feel and there are selectable modes to change the parameters if need be. Handling is also enhanced by the new integral-link

Independent Rear Suspension that keeps the Mustang GT Convertible flat, stable and with minimum body roll during fast corners and minimizes the effects of bumps and potholes on the cabin. It’s a blast whatever model you choose, but the V8 version is the most viscerally pleasing to drive and own., Fuel economy in the 5.0L V8 GT is rated at km/100 -5.8 city, 9.8 highway, and 13.1 combined with the ten-speed automatic, The base price for the Mustang Convertible is pretty fair, however option it up to the GT level and beyond and it certainly gets pricier.

However, this iconic car is very popular, judging by how many you see on the road. You can have it mild or wild with multiple engine choices and in plethora of trim lines. The 2024 Mustang GT Convertible is a great riff on its legendary ancestors and is deservedly Fords Halo car.

Buy once, enjoy for ever! 2024 Ford Mustang Gt Convertible from $43,900 to $60,200. Price as tested - $78,260 including options and Destination/delivery. Plus, options, delivery, and destination. More info at www.ford,ca

The science of pool water

Fraser Health’s 60 Environmental Health Officers will inspect 455 public swimming pools, 312 hot tubs and 90 spray parks and wading pools this year to ensure the water quality meets provincial guidelines and facilities are safe for all users.

“With pool water, there’s a lot of chemistry involved,” says Timothy Millard, manager of Environmental Health. If the pH gets too high, the water becomes too alkaline and reduces the effectiveness of chlorine — one of the primary pool chemicals that kills pathogens.

“Our Environmental Health Officers have a chemistry or biology background, which is helpful because you understand how to prevent the spread of illnesses caused by bacteria and viruses,” says Timothy.

Speaking of bacteria, the best way to keep yourself and your pool pals safe is by showering immediately prior to entering the pool or hot tub. Skin cells, body oils, lotions, shampoo and makeup bind with chlorine to

make chloramines which are less effective in disinfecting the pool water. Chloramines are often what irritates skin, eyes and the respiratory tract.

and repeated showers if you’re reapplying sunscreen will help reduce the buildup of chloramines in pool water.”

“Those red eyes and itchy skin that you might get from swimming in a pool are probably due to chloramines, not chlorine,” says Timothy. “Before going in the pool, a good shower

Along with water conditions, Environmental Health Officers inspect pools for other hazards including loose or missing drain covers, broken tiles, unsecure ladders,

missing depth markings and gaps in fencing, if required.

“We take an educational approach to enforcement with pool operators but safety always comes first and any imminent hazards—like not being able to see the bottom of a pool—can result in immediate closure,” Timothy says.

One thing you may not know about hot tubs open to the public: They must have a clock and water fountain – the clock to monitor your time in the hot tub and the fountain to help prevent dehydration.

Tips for changing careers later in life

(NC) It’s never too late to learn a new skill or pursue a new career. Whether you’re looking for something more meaningful or you want a new challenge, a career shift is possible at any age. To make the big move successfully, consider these tips: Do some self-reflecting. Take time to ensure you’re headed in the right direction for the right reasons. Clarify why you’re searching for a change, what your goals are and how a new job might fit into your lifestyle. A few sessions with a career coach could be a smart investment. Identify transferrable skills. While many hard skills are specific to their respective industries, soft skills like leadership, collaboration and emotional intelligence are valuable in virtually any job. By understanding the existing skills you can bring to a new career, you can position yourself as a seasoned professional looking for something new rather than an inexperienced candidate. Consider upgrading your education. A course or certificate program can be a great

way to not only make sure you have the knowledge needed for a new career, but also develop a network in your new industry. Look for continuing education courses with professors who are leaders in the field so you can tap into real-world experience and connections. Look for a thriving industry. The last thing you want to do is switch to a job in a dying trade with limited opportunities. Consider information technology, or IT, for a field that’s growing quickly and welcoming new professionals for a range of employment opportunities. “Age is just a number when it comes to career transitions, particularly in the tech industry,” explains Pablo Listingart, founder and executive director of ComIT, a charity that provides free training to people struggling to overcome employment barriers. “Don’t let being 50-plus discourage you from acquiring new skills. In today’s world, it’s never too late to embrace change and thrive in a dynamic field like technology.”

How to protect seniors from extreme heat

(NC) Canada is experiencing more frequent and prolonged heat waves, when high temperatures – often combined with humidity – occur for extended periods of time. Extreme heat can impact everyone’s health, and seniors are at greater risk. Here are some tips for seniors and their caregivers to stay safe when the next heat wave arrives.

Do regular wellness checks: Before a heat event, schedule regular calls with the seniors in your life to make sure they’re alright. Monitoring weather forecasts can help you know when to expect hotter temperatures. Having a set time every day can make it easier to remember to call.

Maintain their access to air conditioning: Many heat deaths occur indoors. If they have an air conditioner, it should be serviced annually by a professional to make sure it’s operating properly. Throughout the season, regularly inspect the unit’s filter and clean or replace it as necessary. If they

don’t have an air conditioner, find nearby locations where they can cool off during the hottest periods of the day (usually 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), such as an air-conditioned mall, library or community centre.

Warning signs: Finally, show them how to identify the warning signs of a heat illness. These can include rapid breathing or heartbeat, flushed skin, nausea, headache, dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, and extreme thirst. If they’re experiencing any of these symptoms, they should move to a cool space, drink water and watch for the symptoms to subside. More extreme symptoms, such as a high body temperature, no longer sweating, disorientation or unconsciousness can indicate heatstroke, which requires immediate medical attention. Call 911 immediately and try to cool the person down while help is on the way by fanning them as much as possible, moving them to a cool place if you can and applying cold water to large areas of their skin or clothing.
