Visiting India and Pakistan-6

While visiting Pakistani Punjab, one can’t help but think about the pre 1947 era when India was one unified country and Punjab was one of its most productive, powerful and prosperous provinces. Punjab’s five rivers were a matter of great pride for every Punjabi. Unfortunately, the partition in 1947 not only split people and families but also the rivers. While growing up I still remember going to our neighbouring Sutlej River on Vaisakhi Day and swim in it. Similarly, I have passed over River Bias many times while going to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar or travelling in that direction. However, it was the first time I had the pleasure of crossing over Rivers Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum at the same time while travelling to Islamabad , Rawalpindi. Taxila and Panja sahib. It was a very enjoyable spiritual experience to look at these historic rivers. After visiting various Gurdwaras and other historical places, we would return to Lahore. My wife Baldev and I were now looking forward to visit Baldev’s ancestral home Chak 106 Pharala in Jarahnwali Tehsil in Faisalabad (formerly Lyallpur) district.

After enjoying our breakfast, we were well on our way to Chak 106 Pharala in early morning. This place is less than two hours drive from Lahore. On the way, we passed through Chak105 Banga the place where Shahid Bhagat was born and raised. The government has preserved this historic monument. Some of the roads around these villages were still unpaved and in rough shape. The crops were still growing in the vast rural area. The overall condition of these villages was not that great.

Compared to the Indian Punjab, the overall conditions in Pakistani Punjab in thr rural area still need a lot of improvement. As soon as we arrived in Chak 106 Pharala, the villagers welcomed us with open arms. They were extremely loving, friendly and respectful. A lot of

PUNJABI PATRIK A STAFF

them stayed with us for nearly three hours we were there. They showed us Baldev’s old house, her haveli, site of the village Gurdwara and few other places.

The village officials -sarpanch/lambardar and others shared their stories with us. Some of them mentioned the experience of their ancestors when they were forced to move from the Indian Punjab to the Pakistani Punjab. One eighty-year-old person told us that he was born in Pharala near Banga in East Punjab but moved as a child with his family to Chak 106 Pharala in West Punjab. It was exactly the opposite to my wife who was born in Chak106 Pharala in West Punjab but had to move to Pharala near Banga in East Punjab as a child with her family in 1947. These are very tragic stories of the partition. For us, it was a very emotional occasion. We found it very difficult to say good bye to those very kind, loving and friendly villagers.

Des Pardes Wins Highest Honours at Heritage BC Awards

Abbotsford, BC - Des Pardes, an exhibition on view at The Reach Gallery Museum until June 15, has taken home an Outstanding Award in the Education, Communications, and Awareness category at the Heritage BC Awards hosted in Nelson, BC on May 2.

Developed by The Reach Gallery Museum, Des Pardes is a community-engaged project that focuses on the history and contributions of Abbotsford’s significant and diverse South Asian Canadian communities. Over three years, hundreds of community members contributed ideas, knowledge, and stories, as well as historical objects and archival documents, to achieve the goals of the project. Des Pardes culminates in a major community-based exhibition, a robust suite of educational programs, and increased digitized access to heritage.

The exhibition is a large-scale multi-sensory experience that uses historical photographs, oral histories, contemporary interviews, family heirlooms, and works of contemporary art to illustrate themes like migration, family, and oppression & opposition. Interpretive texts in the resulting exhibition are presented in four languages: English, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi.

The project enriches the representation of South Asian Canadian community history while simultaneously making primary resources digitally accessible to the public. This was accomplished by collecting over 100 oral histories and creating digitized archival resources that are showcased on touchscreen kiosks in the exhibition. These resources will further be incorporated into a legacy website at the conclusion of the exhibition in the coming months.

“ Des Pardes shows the importance of investing in contributors and collaborators to create impactful community-oriented programs", says Britney Dack, Chair of Heritage BC. "Through innovative storytelling in multiple languages, and in leading the way with community engagement, the project's impacts go well beyond the local, to a national level."

According to Dack, “The quality of nominations that we received this year made for a difficult decision with our panel of judges. The quality and breadth of heritage projects that are being developed in communities big and small

Unit #24 - 3275 McCallum Road Abbotsford B.C. V2S 3M7 (Across from Air Care)

across British Columbia is impressive. It demonstrates how important it is to dig deep to learn about the heritage that makes our communities what they are today, and the value in sharing and preserving what we learn. It is an exciting time to be recognizing achievements in heritage.”

The run of the award-winning exhibition at The Reach has been extended, by popular demand, until June 15. Admission to The Reach is by donation and everyone is welcome.

ATRC Climb for Community Raises $10,000 for the Archway Food Bank

The Abbotsford Trail Running Club (ATRC) raised $10,000 for the Archway Food Bank through their Climb for Community fundraiser.

77 participants made a donation and climbed a collective 171,510 meters between April 15 – 21st. The Abbotsford Tech District, Tyee Windows, Vybe Realty, Lululemon, and The Supplement House sponsored the event and donated $1 for every 25 meters that was walked, hiked, biked or ran.

Mike Thomas, President of the ATRC and Operations Manager at Tyee Windows first proposed the idea and helped bring on the sponsors.

“Our aim was to organize an event that would unite the community and contribute positively to those in need. With the rising cost of living, many in our community face challenges in securing basic necessities like food. The services provided by the Archway Food Bank are in high demand and resources are becoming increasingly scarce. Through this fundraiser, we hoped to bolster Archway Food Bank's efforts and bring about meaningful change within our community.”

“We’re blown away by the generosity of the participants and sponsors,” said Rebecca Thuro, Food Security Manager at the Archway Food Bank. “These funds will help ensure thousands of adults and children have access to nutritious food each month.”

The top runner Matt Parr climbed 12,504 meters during the fundraiser week and shared that, "it was a great opportunity to help the community! It's amazing what the group was able to achieve!"

Nicolle Yong, the first female and second overall with 8,974 meters said, “every day is a new day to challenge yourself, don't just exist, live life to the fullest and push your limits.”

Parr and Yong received Lululemon shoes as their prize for most meters climbed. All participants were entered to win draw prizes from Garrison Running Co and The Supplement House.

“We love supporting trails and food security, so this fundraiser was the perfect fit,” said Abbotsford Tech District Chief Strategy Officer, Gavin Dew.

“Vybe Realty has proudly supported Archway Foodbank for the last 10 years through the Christmas Neighbour program and were honored to partner with the Abbotsford Trail Running Club to further support such a worthy cause,” said Jenn Collins, on behalf of her team at Vybe Realty.

Established in 2016, the Abbotsford Trail Running Club strives to follow its mission statement, "To promote fitness and community through trail running and to advocate for our local nature trails." They organize free social trail runs, trail running clinics, fun community events and support local charities.

Letter to The Editor

Hello Editor,

My name is Raj Singh Toor. I live in White Rock. I am the grandson of one of the passengers on the Komagata Maru, and Vice President and spokesperson for the Nonprofit Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society.

The Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver on May 23, 1914 with 376 passengers Sikhs, Muslim and Hindu including two women and five children, one of which was my grandfather. His name was Baba Puran Singh Janetpura. The passengers were 340 Sikh, 24 Muslim, and 12 Hindu, and all were British subjects. Their British citizenship made them eligible to enter Canada.

The Sikhs were some of the early pioneers of White Rock making important contributions to the labour pool for the lumber mills, - the Fox & Hunter Sawmill White Rock,The White Rock Tie & Lumber Lumber Mill, the Campbell River Sawmill, and the Melrose Sawmill, Crescent Oyster Company and industries of the area. Support of the passengers of the Komagata Maru was a very pressing concern for all Sikhs in BC during the summer of 1914, Some Sikhs lived in White Rock Summer of 1914 as well and they generously responded with donations of food, water, and medicine and also contributed to try to lease the ship in an attempt to keep it from being sent back. The City of White Rock have direct connection to the Komagata Maru incident.

The South Asian Community was very important in the development of modern day White Rock. The Komagata Maru is an important part of South Asian Community history and BC history, and we feel it should be officially recognized somewhere in White Rock.

I requested December 17, 2019 to the City of White Rock Respected Mayor and Council for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers.

I also spoke in the Heritage advisory Committee meeting as well for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers.

I presented to Council on October 16,2023, and requested the City of White Rock Council recognize the Komagata Maru Incident. The Council sent my request to City staff for Consideration and bring some recommendations to the Council for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers.

Installation and Service

• Irrigation Installation

• Post Pounding

• Drip and Sprinkler Systems

• Ditch Digging and Cleaning

• Farm Drains

• waste water treatment Well

April 29, 2024 the City staff brought recommendations for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers. The Council approved the Heritage Komagata Maru Story Board on the waterfront in the City of White Rock for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers. I also answered the one of the Council .

White Rock council has decided to create an interpretive history panel, for installation on the waterfront, in memory of the Komagata Maru incident of 1914.

We are extremely happy the Council approved the Heritage Komagata Maru Story Board on the waterfront in the City of White Rock. It’s a great tribute to those passengers who suffered a lot during the tragedy.

I would like to say thank you Respected Mayor Megan Knight and Councillors and City Staff for approved the Heritage Komagata Maru Story Board on the Waterfront in the City of White Rock for recognizing the Komagata Maru passengers on my request.

Deck tech: Tools for designing your dream deck

(NC) Virtually everything in life can now be achieved with just a few clicks or swipes, including planning a new deck. If you’re looking to update your outdoor space, expert assistance is available at your fingertips via a computer or mobile device. Thanks to advancements in rendering technology and user-friendly interfaces, there are lots of great tools and resources online to help guide you through the deck design and planning process from inspiration to installation.

Visualize the possibilities. Every great outdoor space starts with a vision. Apps such as the Trex AR Deck Visualiser allow homeowners to explore design possibilities by experimenting with decking shapes, colours and railing combinations against the backdrop of their own homes. Users can also order decking samples right from the app, which is available for free via the Apple Store and Google Play.

Design from your desktop. Once you’ve envisioned your new deck, bring it to life using an online deck design tool – no engineering or architecture degree required. Desktop programs offer the ability to create multi-level decks and non-traditional layouts customized to your home’s dimensions and populated with specific decking and railing products. Some programs also automatically generate material lists along with cost estimates and printable renderings to share with your contractors.

Calculate costs. To ensure your deck dreams remain within reach, make use of online material and cost calculators. These tools provide valuable guidance in the early planning stages to help you manage expectations and make informed decisions. Rough cost-estimates for materials can be determined based on deck size, substructure needs, and the decking and railing products being considered to give planners a solid starting point for budgeting. Find more deck-planning tips and tools at trex.com.

Jaswant Kaur Bath (born March 4, 1936), affectionately known as Bebe, peacefully passed on May 4th, 2024, in her hometown of Abbotsford B.C. with all of her loved ones by her side. She is survived by her husband, Hardev Singh Bath, her children Bhupinder, Surinder, Naginder, Sukhminder and, Sikander, her 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. On February 27, 1975, she emigrated with her five children from India to Louis Creek, B.C. to join her husband, thus beginning a new chapter of her life in Canada. Shortly thereafter, they settled in Abbotsford where she worked diligently to create a legacy for her family. She had a kind soul. Jaswant was one of the most selfless people that we knew her mission in life was to help the less fortunate. This was exemplified through her countless charitable endeavors, including the construction of the Bhageechi Sahib Gurudwara, and the Bath Eye Hospital in her village of Jalaldiwal. She also made numerous contributions to Tahliana Sahib Gurudwara and School in Raikot. But perhaps her greatest legacy is in that she raised principled, independent, and charitable children and grandchildren. Bebe was famous for her cooking, especially her samosas and saag. She loved to gather her friends and spend the day cooking and regaling everyone with stories. She was generous, thoughtful, and the hardest working person we knew. Her legacy of love, resilience, and service leaves a lasting mark on all who knew her. We miss her dearly. Please contact Surinder or Suki Bath (604-768-2284) for more information or to pass on your condolences.

There will be a service to honor and celebrate her life which will be held at Riverside Funeral Home located at 7410 Hopcott Road in Delta on Saturday, May 11 at 2:00pm, followed by a Bhog at Khaldighar Gurudwara in Abbotsford at 5:30pm.

2024 Buick Encore GX Sport Review:

The Buick Encore is the luxury brand’s sub - compact Crossover UtilityvVehicle (CUV) and has been around for few years. For 2024 is back all new with a new exterior styling and an updated interior. This five door CUS is small but has presence. There is a dramatic front fascia end, slit like headlights and a dominant wide grille. It looks edgy and sharp from any angle. The Encore also has the new Buick tri-shield logo And the new digital 19inch virtual cockpit system.

The 2024 Encore GX is offered in three trims, Preferred, ST (Sport touring) and Avenir. All models are powered by a 1.3-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, except for the base front-wheel drive Preferred, which comes with a CVT. All- wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic is standard on Sport Touring and Avenir trims.

2024 Buick Encore GX pricing structure ranges $29,649 to $36,079 in four trim lines. The entry-level, Preferred front wheel drive model starts at $29,649 The price for the mid-range Preferred AWD trim is $31,649.

The Sport Touring (st) is at $36,098, while the premium Avenir is priced at$40,000 and adds options such as a Bose audio system and panoramic moonroof. Freight and PDI is $2,000.

We tested the 2024 Buick Encore GX Sport Technology trim with 18inch high-gloss black alloy wheels, blackout trim, on the wheel arches, front grille, rear bumper and diffuser and rocker panels. On the inside, the biggest change is a redesigned virtual cockpit system composed of a 19-inch diagonal pane of glass with an 11-inch infotainment screen and an 8-inch configurable instrument cluster. It looks wonderful with bright crisp graphics and gauges. The Encore also gains revised climate control switches, embroidered headrest logos and new seat designs and premium stitched details. Thankfully, there are still physical controls for the climate functions for quick and easy access. There is also a proper volume knob. For its compact size, the Encore GX is surprisingly roomy with decent front cabin leg, head, and shoulder room to accommodate y 6-footers.

There is reasonable storage throughout the Encore GX's cabin,, with a fairly deep center console bin, dual cupholders, cubby holes and door pockets. The ST also receives a grade-specific flat-bottomed steering wheel, along with standard heated front seats, heated steering wheel and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. and a maximum towing: The rear seats fold down and reveal a cargo volume of 1,421 / 665 litres (50.2 / 23.5 cu ft.) (behind first / second row)1,000 pounds (453 kg.)

In terms of safety, all Encores models arrive with as standard: Buick Driver Confidence package, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Indelible auto high-beams and more.

On the road, with a tiny 1.3-litre turbo engine you will not be breaking any speed limits soon, However the unit does an admirable job with its the 155 hp / 174 lb-ft.) in everyday urban and suburban driving. It does take its time to get up to speed on-ramp merging on busy highways. As expect acceleration is slow, but not maddening and once in its groove the 1.3-litre turbo is fine The Encore is also quieter than I expected thanks to Buicks Quiet tuning sound deadening materials. The Encore handles well enough with taut steering and decent brakes.

Overall, the 2024 Encore GX is smart choice if you are looking for a stylish small crossover with premium feel and good standard equipment at a reasonable price. Fuel economy is rated at 9.1 / 8.4 / 8.8 L / 100 km (city / highway / combined – AWD) . . To sum up, the Encore offers a lot of value here —with it is excellent as standard features list. It is also priced very well. I can see it appealing to millennials, and those who are loyal Buick fans and looking for a smaller, technology laden SUV. 2024 Buick Encore GX ST Priced from $29,649 to $36,079 plus freight, excl. taxes and fees.

Some tips for succession planning for a small family business

(NC) The transfer of a small business’s ownership between family members can be a tricky and emotional process if you’re not prepared for it. To help ease the transition, it’s important to start the conversation early and develop a succession plan well before the decision is made that it’s time for some other family member to take over the business.

What is succession planning?- A succession plan gives a clear outline of what should happen when you are ready to exit your business and transition it to be led by a new family member. By having a succession plan in place, it can help make the transition smoother for yourself, your family members and your employees.

Some tips for succession planning- Start planning early: These are complex processes which can take years to bring to fruition. All too often, business owners don’t start planning until late in the game. This can lead to confusion and headaches down the road. Start succession planning at least three to five years before your planned departure.

Seek professional advice: Many professionals are trained in different areas of business succession planning – including lawyers, accountants, business brokers, family business consultants and investment advisors – some or all of whom could be of help at different stages of your succession plan.

Think about the impact on your lifestyle: Family business owners can sometimes get caught up in the financial aspects of succession planning and may not think about what this change could mean for them personally. For example, you’ll need to answer questions like: Will you be involved in helping transition the business? What will you do with your time after your exit? How should you consider structuring your business so that it will be best for your family, employees and the business itself?

Succession planning in advance can make a difference: Many small business owners find it difficult to plan on how to hand their business over to a family member. But putting a plan in place can go a long way towards helping to minimize the stress for both the small business owner and the family members involved. A new addition at Edgehill Elementary school will bring more student seats to the community in Powell River.

“As many more people make British Columbia their home, our government continues to build, expand and upgrade schools throughout the province,” said Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care. “This expansion will ensure more students in Powell River have access to a safe, modern, quality learning environment that is close to home.”

Through $16.5 million in provincial funding and $250,000 from the school district, the addition and renovations will add five classrooms, opening up 120 new elementary spaces for students at Edgehill Elementary. They also include sustainable and energy-efficient designs that align with the Province’s CleanBC emissions-reduction goals. A new multipurpose room, a media-technology room, dedicated learning spaces for students with disabilities or diverse abilities, and the new classrooms are expected to be ready for students by spring 2026.

“I am very pleased to announce that Powell River will soon benefit from new classrooms that will serve students in this area for decades to come,” said Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast. “Our government will continue to build and enhance schools in the qathet School District and throughout B.C. to ensure all students have the opportunity to thrive and grow.”

To further support safe, upgraded learning environments for students, the Province is also providing the qathet School District with more than $2.1 million for minor facility projects. As part of this funding, Henderson Elementary will receive heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system upgrades for this year. The funding also supports energy saving upgrades at Henderson Elementary, James Thomson Elementary, Kelly Creek Community School, and Texada Elementary.

“These capital upgrades and additions have been a priority for our district for some time and we are thrilled about the Province’s support,” said Jaclyn Miller, qathet School District board chair. “Our community is growing and these funds are significant to enhance not only the capacity at Edgehill but also the school environment at many schools, and we are looking forward to the positive impact this will have on our students and staff.”

Since September 2017, the B.C. government has provided more than $4 billion for new and improved schools, and land purchases for future schools throughout the province. This has resulted in more than 25,000 new student spaces and more than 35,000 seismically safe seats at B.C. schools.

Budget 2024 includes $3.75 billion for school capital projects over the next three years, including new and expanded schools, seismic upgrades and replacements, and land purchases for future schools.

ICBC announces $110 rebate to drivers, basic rates remain unchanged

CBC is providing a $110 rebate to eligible drivers through prudent financial management and better-than-expected investment income.

Additionally, basic rates will be maintained until March 31, 2026, marking six years in a row with no increases.

“Six years of stable rates and the fourth rebate for drivers comes as a result of years of work turning ICBC around so that it actually works for people,” said Premier David Eby. “On average, drivers have saved $2,000 in rebates and lower rates since our reforms to ensure that when auto insurance is properly managed, people in B.C. benefit.”

Due to positive investment performance and responsible fiscal management, ICBC’s preliminary net income for the fiscal year 2023-24 is an estimated $1.5 billion. The total amount of the rebate is $400 million, equivalent to $110 per eligible insurance policy. As the law now requires, the balance will stay with ICBC, helping to stabilize rates for drivers over the long term. The final, audited net income figure, along with a full financial summary of the fiscal year, will be released this summer.

All personal and commercial ICBC customers who had an active eligible basic insurance policy in February 2024 will receive the rebate, totalling roughly 3.6 million policies.

“ICBC is able to return $400 million to drivers because of prudent fiscal management that puts people first, and our commitment in law that ICBC’s surplus should go toward benefiting drivers instead of going to government coffers,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “This rebate, alongside the decision to not increase basic rates for six years in a row, underscores the benefit of a public auto insurer. When private insurance companies make a profit, it’s at the expense of, not for the benefit of drivers.”

An important barometer of ICBC's financial strength is its ability to absorb adverse risks and to still fulfil its obligations to policyholders, referred to as the minimum capital test (MCT). In 2015, the indicator for ICBC's basic capital fell below 85%, and by 2018, it had effectively reached 0%. Following the introduction of Enhanced Care, ICBC's financial position has significantly improved, and today, the estimate for ICBC's basic MCT is above 160% and projected to remain strong.

David Wong, ICBC's new president and CEO, has significant experience in financial management and a commitment to customer-centric services. His leadership focus aligns with ICBC's mission to prioritize affordability and enhance customer convenience.

“To receive your rebate as quickly as possible, we encourage customers to update their addresses and sign up for direct deposit on https://icbc.com/ or through an Autoplan broker,” Wong said. “Initial rebate payments will commence in late May, with ongoing processing until the end of July. Customers receiving rebates via cheque are advised to allow additional time for mail processing and delivery.”

How drivers receive the rebate depends on how they paid for their insurance. For people who paid by credit card, the rebate will be refunded to the credit card. People who paid by cash, cheque or debit can sign up for direct deposit or will receive a cheque from ICBC. For people who are on a payment plan, the rebate will be applied directly to an upcoming payment.

As a public insurer, ICBC remains dedicated to providing essential services to people in British Columbia. In addition to insurance coverage that provides vehicle repairs and recovery benefits for people involved in crashes, ICBC provides driver licensing and identification services, and invests in road-safety initiatives.
