Dear Friends of Punchestown,

On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to the penultimate day of the 2023 Punchestown Festival. We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us in these challenging times and for joining us today and we really hope you enjoy everything that the Punchestown experience has to offer.

Today’s feature race is of course the Grade 1 €300,000 Paddy Power Champion Hurdle which is one of the most eagerly anticipated contests of the week. This race is renowned for its illustrious roll of honour producing timeless champions such as our most recent winner Honeysuckle, Faugheen, Hurricane Fly, Jezki, Hardy Eustace and of course the legendary Istabraq. I would like to welcome all the team from Paddy Power to the Home of Irish Jump Racing and I would also like to acknowledge and thank all our sponsors today and indeed throughout the week for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Whilst the season is nearing the end, with over €3.3 million in prizemoney and 12 Grade 1 contests on offer this week there is still plenty to play for and perhaps the best is yet to come!

It is not all just about the action on the racecourse today either as the social aspect of the Punchestown Festival really comes into its own. The overall winner of the Bollinger Best Dressed will be judged and announced shortly after the first race in the Bollinger Lounge and Garden located in the Style Quarter in the Reserved Enclosure, so make sure to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the colour, style and elegance that it provides.

We’re thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. throughout the week who are set to renew rivalries again on Irish soil. The U.K. involvement is such an integral part of our festival and we sincerely thank all trainers, owners, jockeys and racing enthusiasts for making the extra effort to travel to Punchestown. We really do hope you enjoy the experience and we wish you every success and a safe journey home.

The Punchestown Festival really is something to savour and we hope that you enjoy the action on and off the track with a host of entertainment lined up for all to enjoy. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, enjoy the Punchestown experience and we very much look forward to welcoming festival goers of all ages back tomorrow for the final day of the 2023 Punchestown Festival which is of course Ballymore Family Day as we sign off on the 2023 Punchestown Festival.

Kindest Regards, Conor

RACE 1 PREDICTOR

RACE VERDICT

Any horse from the Gordon Elliott stable has to be of big interest in a race like this. Despite two undistinguished hunter chase displays, HAPPY VICTORY will be hard to beat on the evidence of his point-to-point form, including a course success at the expense of Keenaghan Lass and Fr Gilligansvoyge. An Droichead Gorm spoiled his chance in this race last year with a poor round of jumping. Barry O’Neill may get a better tune out of him.

RACE VERDICT

Willie Mullins, who has won six of the last seven editions of this event, saddles the three joint-top weights, all of them making a first handicap appearance after running in Grade 1 races. Kilcruit is Paul Townend’s choice, but it may be worth recalling that the rider of Adamantly Chosen was on the right one 12 months ago. However, none of the trio may cope with GRANDERO BELLO who may uphold conditions-race with Life In The Park and Macs Charm. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

Stablemates Instit and Allegorie De Vassy were poised for a close battle before a bad mistake at the final fence from the latter at Fairyhouse earlier this month. Instit may confirm that form but IMPERVIOUS is the one to beat. She battled on gamely to win the Mares’ Chase at Cheltenham last month and she arrives fresher than her two main rivals, having not raced in between. [Phill Anderson]

RACE VERDICT

There doesn’t seem to be much point in opposing IMPAIRE ET PASSE who arrives unbeaten and sets a clear standard having bolted up in the Ballymore last time. Stablemate Champ Kiely should find going right-handed a bit easier this time and looks like the one for the forecast. [Phill Anderson]

RACE VERDICT

The Irish hunter chase scene presents a confused picture after below-par performances from some of the main players. A little unlucky here last year, VAUCELET may make amends for that and for last month’s Cheltenham disappointment. Last year’s Cheltenham winner Billaway completed the double 12 months ago but has suffered recent reverses. Its On The Line\ and Chris’s Dream, runner-up and fifth respectively at Cheltenham, should be in the mix. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

RACE VERDICT

This can go the way of MONBEG PARK who posted a career best when first past the post last time at Fairyhouse and a reprododuction of that run should give him every chance. Sa Majeste is the obvious danger debuting for Willie Mullins having won his latest start in France last year. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT

Willie Mullins has already had a strong week and LECKY WATSON looks capable of giving him another winner. He sets the standard on form having finished fourth in the Champion Bumper last time and he should relish a drop in grade now. Quantum Storm and Irish Panther are both closely matched on form and ought to appreciate a step up in trip. Walk Away Harry and Dr Eggman both looked promising on debut and complete the shortlist.
