LOCAL GOVERNANCE IS HEALTHY GOVERNANCE

1

WHAT IS A HEALTHY

COMMUNIT Y?

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, we will broaden our approach, and think not only about healthcare, but also about health. And, we will think beyond the walls of the hospital and take our services and our winning spirit out into our communities. As you read this report, you’ll learn a great deal about the new Renown — the bold initiatives currently in place, our community-minded strategies for the road ahead, and the technologies and talented people we rely on and invest in every day.

2

Ask a dozen people that question and you’ll get a dozen very different and compelling answers. Here at Renown Health, we’re committed to an ongoing dialogue about our collective well-being, to finding common ground, and to delivering meaningful answers that benefit all the populations we serve. To that end, we have worked hand-in-hand with our many partners to create a new mission, vision and values to support our new strategic plan. And thanks to the enthusiastic input of so many, we have shaped a plan and a promise that reflects more than just our noble ambitions; it reflects the ongoing needs of a thriving community.

3

We look forward to a future of inspiring health for everyone! Thank you for supporting Renown — your locally governed, not-for-profit healthcare network.

It takes a willing community to be a healthy community. The views, needs and dreams of everyone are vital to the creation of a shared and meaningful blueprint for our future health. Our employees, doctors, board and community members have all contributed to the creation of our new mission, vision and values. We believe they are a powerfully authentic expression of both what is needed and what can be achieved.

OUR MISSION

Renown Health makes a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.

Janie Konakis, MD, Renown Medical Group

OUR VISION

Renown Health, with our partners, will inspire better health in our communities.

OUR VALUES

Our values are the words we live by: caring, integrity, collaboration and excellence.

TURNING INTENTIONS INTO ACTIONS A strategic plan is nothing if it does not inspire action, which is why our new strategic plan is built around three core initiatives:

INITIATIVE #1

INTEGRATING CARE AND MANAGING HEALTH FOR OUR COMMUNITY

We will establish Renown as the community’s source for healthy inspiration, staying focused on our Triple Aim objectives of improving our services and patient outcomes while better managing costs. By doing this, we will be able to touch even more lives in the community, especially those most in need. 6

7

INITIATIVE #2

BUILDING KEY RELATIONSHIPS

Those we care for and those who help us provide care are partners one and all. We will actively and earnestly cultivate better relationships. We know when it comes to improving the health of our community, we cannot do it alone. We will continue to foster openness and collaboration, knowing that together we’re capable of accomplishing profound and amazing things.

INITIATIVE #3

GROWING AND INNOVATING

We must think well beyond the hospital walls, offering new programs and services that make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout our region.

PROUDLY NOT-FOR-PROFIT As the only locally owned, not-for-profit health network in Reno, we proudly embrace our role as a healthcare leader in this region. And because all income earned here actually stays here, we are more able to extend a helping hand where it’s needed most, providing many services that cannot pay for themselves — and might otherwise simply not exist. We answer to no out-of-state owners or shareholders, but rather to our own board, our partners, and those for whom we provide care. All of our revenues stay here in northern Nevada and are reinvested in the people, programs and technologies that will make the biggest and most enduring impact in this place we all call home.

8

Even with a solid financial performance, in an average year we are able to fund only a fraction of the capital equipment requests from our doctors and staff. Be assured, however, that at Renown, we work hard every day to allocate our scarce resources where they will best support our patients and our community by investing in our people, and in new facilities and technologies. On the following pages, you’ll learn how we’re accomplishing this goal for the benefit of patients, families and the community.

NEW TOOLS FOR HEALING AND BETTER PLACES TO DO IT By reinvesting all of our income, we’re changing the face of healthcare in our region. Our investments allow us to serve more people more effectively and with greater efficiency. The following are a few highlights of this tireless pursuit toward an ever-better, more advanced and humanly attuned Renown Health: • Four new Xenex Germ-Zapping Robots to improve safety in both of our acute-care hospitals. This space-age technology employs pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV-C) light to eliminate highly contagious superbugs in operating rooms and patient care areas.

10

• An upgraded, physician-guided da Vinci Robotic Xi Surgical System boasts reduced pain and scarring for patients, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery. Our Robotic Surgical Program is the most experienced in the region with 10 specialty areas and completion of more than 3,000 procedures since its inception.

11

• A new PACS system allows doctors to view X-rays with greater speed and accuracy. • Renown Rehabilitation Hospital upgraded facility will benefit patients facing the long recovery that often accompanies a stroke or traumatic brain, spinal cord or orthopedic injury.

RENOWN DELIVERS MORE THAN 4,000 BABIES EACH YEAR. THE RENOVATED BABY & FAMILY SUITES PROVIDE NEW MOMS AN IMPROVED DELIVERY EXPERIENCE IN A MORE COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT.

TWO MIRACLES IN ONE THANKS TO PHYSICIAN-GUIDED ROBOTIC SURGERY In 2011, Courtney Russell was struggling to conceive a child, but she soon found herself struggling with an even bigger challenge: stage 2 ovarian cancer. Knowing that surgery was a likely course of treatment, Courtney sought the expertise of Peter Lim, MD, FACOG, Medical Director of Renown Institute for Robotic Surgery, and a regional leader in the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System.

12

Typically a patient with this diagnosis would undergo a hysterectomy, ending any hope of future pregnancy. However, knowing how badly Courtney wanted a family, Dr. Lim went the extra mile and consulted with colleagues around the world to devise a meticulous new approach for her surgery.

13

Taking full advantage of da Vinci’s less invasive, highly precise robotic instruments, Dr. Lim was able to perform a partial hysterectomy, removing the cancer and preserving 80 percent of one of Courtney’s ovaries. Not only had Dr. Lim saved Courtney’s life, he had also saved her ability to bring a new life into this world.

WITH LEADERSHIP COMES RESPONSIBILITY We offer many programs solely because they make a substantial difference in the lives of our patients and their families. The Pregnancy Center is one such program that has been serving the community for decades. Every year we care for thousands of low-income mothers, providing the prenatal care essential to a healthy birth. And The Healthcare Center provides affordable access to care for hundreds of low-income patients. But we do not stand on our history to change the course of healthcare. We are growing and changing as a community, and that means our healthcare approach is changing too. We constantly reevaluate how Renown can help and where we can make the most impact. We recently committed more than $6 million to additional community benefit initiatives. 14

FORGING AHEAD TOGETHER Our new strategic plan calls upon us to strengthen old partnerships and develop new ones. We recognize that we all must come together if we are to really move the needle on our community health statistics and improve the overall health of our community. To accomplish these lofty goals, we are forging new partnerships with doctors, nonprofits, other hospitals, and those who are educating tomorrow’s workforce — just to name a few. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to think differently and focus on what’s really important. And, we won’t forget our most significant partnerships — the one we share with our 5,770 employees. The good work we do would not be possible without them. Here are some of our most recent developments with our nonprofit partnerships:

18

We’ve come together with the Truckee Meadows Healthy Community (TMHC) Initiative to create a culture of health in the region. With this work as a foundation, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada — a TMHC partner — was chosen to receive one of five national planning grants through Feeding America and the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. Funds will support a three-year collective impact planning process with TMHC to continue building a cross-sector, collaborative initiative around community health (food security, housing, jobs, etc.). The new funding will bring more than $1 million into the community over the next three years.

19

Renown also recently agreed to assume the lead agency status for Safe Kids Washoe County. This collaboration of more than a dozen local organizations works to protect kids from unintentional injuries — the No. 1 cause of death for children in the United States.

DONORS PROVIDE AN EVEN GREATER CAPACITY TO CARE 20 Renown Health stands ready to serve and perform at the top of our game when patients and the community need us most. To achieve this, we rely in large part on the generous support of our donors. Philanthropy allows us to grow and serve more efficiently. With donor funds, we are hiring great people, constructing additional facilities, purchasing the latest technologies, launching new services and providing help to those with the greatest needs. We commit 100 percent of donations received by the Renown Health Foundation to support initiatives that bolster our abilities to heal others.

The David and Judy Hess Children’s Imaging Center, Wilbur D. May Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and William N. Pennington Nursery were all made possible through generous contributions. And just this year, charitable support has allowed us to: • Build new Pediatric Pre/Post Op Rooms and an accompanying Same-Day Surgery Family Lounge — funded by the Magic Gala and Children’s Miracle Network donors.

• Begin designing the new Estelle J. Kelsey Simulation Lab,

which will be used to enhance simulation training for nurses and doctors. It will also provide opportunities for University of Nevada School of Medicine and Orvis School of Nursing students to train side by side with our professional staff.

• Fully underwrite Healing Arts, Child Life and Patient Assistance programs — allowing us to complement outstanding medical care with an extra dose of support and comfort.

• Recruit the new Renown Children’s Hospital Chief Pediatric

Officer/University of Nevada School of Medicine Chair of Pediatrics — funded in part by the Nell J. Redfield Foundation.

We are so grateful for the way our family of donors is stepping forward to help us create a system of total community health — physical, mental and emotional — and making it readily available to all. If we are to make a large and enduring impact, we cannot do it alone. Philanthropy and the involvement of our contributors is mission critical. Every step of the way. Every day.

INTRODUCING A REVOLUTION IN CHILD HEALTH Although much has been accomplished in the area of children’s health, our region’s child-health statistics demand improvement. Incremental change will simply never be enough to reverse the tide — bold thinking and powerful action are required. We must radically change the status quo if we are to provide all children in the community the opportunity to realize their full potential. And that’s precisely the vision behind the Child Health Institute. 22

The Institute envisions a holistic approach to protecting and guiding the health and well-being of our region’s youth. Through its five centers, each with its own specific focus, we will engage families, advocate for meaningful and lasting change, and work to improve health and social outcomes for these precious young lives — the future of our community and region. Changing the state of children’s health requires the vigor and conviction of many, which is why developing and implementing its programs will be a highly collaborative endeavor. We will draw from the vast expertise of those already working to improve lives in this region, as well as from our collective community expertise — harnessing and maximizing the skills and experience of professionals and businesses throughout the community in ways never before seen. And we look to the immense generosity of our donors to help us bring this profound new vision of child health to fruition. The Child Health Institute is a vision today — it will be a reality in the next year thanks to seed funding of $5 million provided by Renown Health. We will accomplish the important work of advancing child health through five centers, each with a distinct but critically important mission.

CENTER FOR HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH The Center for Health Services Research will improve the lives of children and families in northern Nevada through best practices research, and database development and analysis.

CENTER FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION The Center for Health Professions Education will exist to ensure a number of well-trained pediatric professionals are available to serve the children of northern Nevada.

23

CENTER FOR HEALTHCARE DELIVERY The Center for Healthcare Delivery will bring healthcare partners together to better coordinate and improve healthcare for children throughout the region.

THE CENTER FOR CHILD & FAMILY POTENTIAL The Center for Child & Family Potential will work to improve the lives of children and their families today.

THE CENTER FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE The Center for Social Justice will work to eliminate disparities in health linked to social circumstance. We will seek access to food, primary education, adequate housing, job training and healthcare for everyone in our region.

COMMUNITY AND PARTNERSHIPS

TRAINING TOMORROW’S DOCTORS RIGHT HERE Reaching the goals of community health means many things — including providing greater access to care for everyone in the region. To accomplish this we must address Nevada’s shortage of doctors. Our landmark affiliation with the University of Nevada School of Medicine is one step in that direction. Although the partnership with Renown and the School of Medicine dates back decades, the newly announced affiliation agreement is supported by a $5 million commitment from Renown with additional funding provided by the state legislature. Announced in 2014, the agreement is based on a five-year plan calling for the joint creation and development of programs to expand the school’s teaching capacity, allowing it to become a full-fledged, four-year medical school right here in Reno. In addition, Renown Health is expanding its residency training program. 24

This expansion will bring a significant — and vital — increase in the number of doctors who train and practice in our community. But that’s not all. The Renown Health-University of Nevada School of Medicine Steering Committee is already busy at work on a plan to further bolster our pool of healthcare professionals with a physician assistant program. We are scheduled to take our first students in 2017. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to transform medical care and education in northern Nevada.” — Thomas L. Schwenk, MD Dean, University of Nevada School of Medicine

MORE EXCITING PARTNERSHIPS ON THE HORIZON

26

Renown is reaching beyond U.S. borders to support our goal of increasing the number of physicians practicing in our region. We recently partnered with St. George’s University (SGU) — a leading independent, international medical school — located in Grenada, where students will work at Renown. Students from SGU are already completing their training at other top-notch medical centers around the U.S. SGU is the No. 1 provider of doctors into first year U.S. residencies for the last five years.

27

Experience has shown that medical trainees who study and train in Reno often stay in the area to practice. This partnership will help our collective efforts to increase the number of healthcare professionals practicing in the region.

COMMUNITY AND PARTNERSHIPS

A LASTING PARTNERSHIP WITH EMPLOYEES Without them the finest hospitals are little more than empty boxes, and the most advanced technologies are powerless assemblies of metal and plastic. We’re talking about skilled, driven and dedicated employees. Our employees. They’re the kind of ambitious, purpose-driven individuals who work to make the lives of our patients — and the world at large — better in every way possible. They define our organization, set us apart, and make us a positive force in the communities we serve. Among them are expert doctors, nurses, therapists, techs, nutritionists, social workers and many other professionals — IT, insurance, finance, marketing, customer service — who make a difference each and every day. In addition to providing great medical care to the community, our employees go above and beyond to assist us with many diverse organizational goals: promoting and celebrating diversity in our workforce and reducing our carbon footprint. Renown employees number more than 5,770 strong — the largest private workforce in the region. As an organization, Renown creates more than 4,096 indirect jobs as well.

28

Our numbers are impressive, but the truly remarkable thing about our employees is their broader contribution beyond our walls. Following are just a few of the many compelling stories of employees who are using their passion for healing to make a genuine difference in our community.

RENOWN EMPLOYEES ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY EVERY DAY

LACI CROW RN, SURGICAL SERVICES

LACI’S PASSION: WOMEN AND GIRLS STRUGGLING TO RISE ABOVE POVERTY “When I worked in labor and delivery, I saw firsthand how when you begin to promote education for women, really good things start to happen within their families. And the benefits to the children are rapidly apparent,” says Laci Crow. “I wanted to do something to inspire like-minded people to help more women break the cycle of poverty.”

THE INITIATIVE: DINING FOR WOMEN

30

“Women helping impoverished women and girls around the world” — that’s the mission of Dining for Women (DFW). And in 2014, Laci launched a local chapter of this acclaimed organization. DFW is a giving circle that meets monthly for a potluck meal. The money that would have otherwise been spent dining out is collected and donated to various charities and programs that support women and girls endeavoring to improve their lives.

31

THE DIFFERENCE MADE: CHANGING LIVES LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY Laci supports local organizations such as Safe Embrace, which provides emergency shelter and educational programs to women and children in crisis due to domestic violence. But Laci and her fastgrowing team of contributors have also raised funds for girls in a Nepal orphanage, enabling them to attend school. “DFW is an enormously rewarding way for anyone to help change the world.”

Laci Crow, RN (right), is shown with Vanessa Monroe of the local nonprofit group Safe Embrace — a women’s and children’s domestic violence shelter and support group. Safe Embrace is one organization that Laci’s chapter of the national Dining for Women charity helps support.

SHANNON WHITE

RN, OCN, LEAD PROTOCOL NURSE, RENOWN INSTITUTE FOR CANCER SHANNON’S PASSION: SUPPORT FOR GYNECOLOGICAL MALIGNANCY PATIENTS Battling cancer is something no woman should have to do alone, and Shannon White does everything within her power to ensure that. “Our patients come to us in a time of immense vulnerability and uncertainty,” says Shannon. “I firmly believe we can never do enough to help these women navigate the treatment process with dignity, friendship and hope.”

THE INITIATIVE: BECOMING A TIRELESS CHAMPION Giving selflessly of her time and energy and her very soul — that’s what Shannon does. Yes, compassionate expertise is the signature of her daily patient care efforts. But there’s more. Off the clock, Shannon is literally a one-woman advocacy and support machine. She’s a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, leads Renown women’s support groups, organizes a Moms-on-the-Run fundraiser team, plays an active role in the Reno Cancer Foundation and has organized several local benefit events.

32

THE DIFFERENCE MADE: THE GIFTS OF SOLACE AND UNDERSTANDING Expressing the full impact of empathy on the life of a cancer patient is no easy thing. But if you could see the gratitude reflected in the eyes of a care provider, Shannon’s eyes would tell you all you need to know. “My career has been so rewarding,” she says. “Whether it’s raising money to help women afford their living expenses during their treatment or simply sitting with someone and listening as they voice their fears and frustrations, it’s the gift of humanity we all owe one another.” Registered Nurse Shannon White says the best thing about her job is her patients. And she proves it with her actions.

JASON NELSON

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT, RENOWN REHABILITATION HOSPITAL JASON’S PASSION: HELPING PATIENTS ADJUST TO NEW REALITIES At just 22 years of age, Shane Fish suffered an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. In addition to nearly three months at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital learning to adapt to the day-to-day challenges of his new physical reality, Shane also faced the daunting prospect of finding and moving into a new home upon his discharge. Further complicating matters, he had no furnishings or household items.

THE INITIATIVE: RALLYING THE RENOWN FAMILY 34

35

One of Shane’s therapists Jason Nelson took note of his pending situation and not only helped him find a home that catered to his physical capabilities, but also started a word-of-mouth campaign among his Renown colleagues seeking donations. “The goal was just to make Shane’s move as easy as possible,” says Jason. “Word spread pretty fast: Things sort of snowballed and folks responded.”

THE DIFFERENCE MADE: A SMOOTH TRANSITION TO A NEW HOME By the time Shane was discharged, Jason and his fellow contributors had secured a couch, a bed and frame, dishes, laundry items, food, and gift cards for additional supplies. They even moved everything into Shane’s new home. “I was really impressed with my coworkers and all the other people who came together to help someone they didn’t even know,” Jason says. And for his part, Shane couldn’t have been more grateful. “Helping me the way they did took a lot of stress off of me. The outpouring of support was pretty amazing.” Renown Rehabilitation Hospital employee, Jason Nelson (right), spearheads a household items and donation drive for a patient in need.

RENOWN EMPLOYEES ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY EVERY DAY

IVAN LOPEZ, MD, FAAN

MEDICAL DIRECTOR, RENOWN INSTITUTE FOR NEUROSCIENCES IVAN’S PASSION: CARE OF OUR SOLDIERS DEPLOYED OVERSEAS Immersed in the comforts of our daily routines, it’s easy to forget that young men and women risk their lives every day to ensure our freedom. But Dr. Ivan Lopez remembers watching a couple’s tearful account of their son’s death while serving in Iraq just after 9/11. “This young kid was shot protecting my family and me,” says Dr. Lopez. “Here I was enjoying all the freedoms and opportunities this country offers, and yet I had really done nothing to earn it.” It was then Dr. Lopez decided to do something big.

THE INITIATIVE: TAKING NEUROLOGY TO THE FRONT LINES

36

Inspired by the sacrifice of America’s young soldiers and committed to providing them with the best possible care, Dr. Lopez volunteered for the United States Army Reserves in 2005. He deployed four times as a general medical officer and as a neurologist, serving at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany; Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, DC; Camp Cropper in Iraq with the 322nd Medical Company; and Camp Arifjan in Kuwait with the 48th Combat Support Hospital.

THE DIFFERENCE MADE: THE CARE HE’D WANT FOR HIS OWN CHILDREN

While brave young men and women battle in a foreign country far from home, Dr. Lopez strives to treat and care for his fellow soldiers as if they were family.

Many of the soldiers Dr. Lopez cared for suffered from insomnia, headaches and stress. And being far from family and friends only aggravates those conditions. Dr. Lopez recalls, “The majority of my patients were so young that I could have been their father. One of the best things I could do for them was to dedicate my time, to just listen to them and maybe give a little fatherly insight.” He continues, “If my children were deployed in this inhospitable setting, I would love for someone to listen to them and give them sound advice. And I would deeply appreciate knowing that someone was doing their best to take care of them, to treat them like their own children. That’s what I tried to do — every day.”

RENOWN HEALTH VOLUNTEERS GIVE BACK

THERE WHEN PEOPLE NEED HER MOST

There are hundreds of compassionate, everyday heroes who donate their time and talent to Renown Health. Our volunteers help patients and their families in many different ways — from rocking babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to delivering flowers and gifts. We couldn’t do it without them.

Over the past 15 years, Linda Derry has volunteered more than 2,300 hours helping to ensure the comfort and dignity of terminally ill patients and their families. Her selfless contributions have helped make Renown’s Hospice Care program an invaluable peace-of-mind resource for those facing life’s greatest challenge.

CONVENIENT, COMPREHENSIVE CARE

43

RENOWN’S ACCOUNTABLE CARE ORGANIZATION — A BETTER VIEW OF HEALTH There’s more to medicine than just healing. It also takes dedication.

44

That’s why we‘ve made a commitment to expand our focus on patient-centered care, keeping you — the patient — at the heart of everything we do. By actively participating in a CMS (Medicare) program called an Accountable Care Organization (ACO), we are better able to work with you to keep you healthy, helping to manage chronic health conditions and overall health. In fact, we are the first and only ACO in northern Nevada. An ACO is a big-picture model of care. It’s a patient-centered system, bringing together teams of doctors and other highly trained healthcare professionals from a wide variety of specialties — all with a laser-eye focus on the long-term wellbeing of each and every patient. And with a heavy emphasis on prevention, ACOs support our mission of inspiring good health in our patients and our community.

45

Through the ACO and our Population Health Management Organization, we are using data in new ways to improve care – and improve lives. As but one example, through disease registries we will identify and support patients living with complex diseases such as diabetes, congestive heart failure and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). With new and sophisticated data analytics, we can give patients with chronic conditions more than hope. We will provide them a roadmap to achieve their best possible health and an expert team to help them get, and stay, there.

MAKING WORLD-CLASS CARE A LOCAL REALITY We are the epicenter of healing and health in this region. We serve our patient populations by putting advanced treatment protocols and leading-edge equipment in the hands of some of the most compassionate, expert care providers you’ll find anywhere.

A POWERFUL ANSWER TO CANCER Renown Institute for Cancer is the region’s leader in cancer care and offers the same comprehensive services generally available only in much larger cities. The Institute provides care and services from prevention and screening to diagnosis and treatment to survivorship, palliative care, and end-of-life services.

48

Services include specialized cancer surgery, a state-of-the-art radiation oncology department, an infusion center that delivers chemotherapy and other infusion therapies, and programs that support patients and families. Programs include psychosocial and genetic counseling, symptom management, survivorship planning, palliative and hospice care, and a dedicated hospital floor. We offer access to the latest treatment options, including clinical trials and leading-edge technologies. We’re also pleased to provide all patients the caring support of nurse navigators, a cancer concierge and a dedicated social worker.

49

Renown Institute for Cancer is the only program in Nevada with triple accreditations from the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Accreditation Program, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the American College of Radiation Oncology.

“CANCER IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX DIAGNOSES TO TREAT. IT AFFECTS THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL. OUR APPROACH TO CARE BRINGS SPECIALISTS, NURSES AND OTHER EXPERTS TOGETHER TO PROVIDE A COORDINATED AND INDIVIDUALIZED TREATMENT PLAN.” — Christos Galanopoulos, MD, MS, FACS Vice President, Medical Director, Renown Institute for Cancer Deepa Mocherla, MD

STATE-OF-THE-HEART CARE Heart disease is the leading cause of death in our state, claiming the lives of nearly 5,000 Nevadans every year. Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health is leading the fight to reduce this health burden and help our families, friends and neighbors live longer, healthier lives. As the region’s hub for heart and vascular care, we are on the forefront of treatments and support — from rapid, heart muscle-saving procedures to ongoing condition management to comprehensive wellness and prevention programs. In addition, our team of heart specialists is the largest in the region and serves eight local communities across northern Nevada — making sure that when it comes to heart care, we’ve got you covered.

THE HEALTHIER PATH FROM HOSPITAL TO HOME Nearly 1 in 5 Medicare patients hospitalized with a heart attack is readmitted within 30 days of discharge. The same goes for 1 in 4 of those hospitalized with heart failure, adding up to $41.3 billion in annual hospital costs nationwide. By improving medication management and empowering patients to take a more active role in their recovery, a large percentage of these readmissions could be avoided.

50

That’s why our Patient Navigator Program was created. And because of the program’s success, we are one of 35 hospitals chosen to participate in a new national collaboration to improve heart care. This effort allows our team to work in partnership with such leading national programs as Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

THE NERVE CENTER OF OUR REGION

52

As the only program of its kind in northern Nevada, Renown Institute for Neurosciences not only provides state-of-the-art neurological care to patients and their families, but also gives them the opportunity to participate in potentially life-changing clinical research. Our team is currently participating in 20 promising clinical trials in five areas of research — three of which are sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Our research focuses on stroke, headache, pediatric migraines, multiple sclerosis and seizure disorders (epilepsy). Additionally, the Institute partners with the University of Nevada School of Medicine so local medical students and residents can receive intensive training in clinical neurology, the study of the nervous system and its disorders.

53

LEADING THE WAY IN STROKE CARE We earned the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission by offering the most-advanced stroke treatment options available. In March 2015 we opened the area’s first dedicated stroke unit. It offers local stroke patients the kind of highly specialized, full-court-press approach to care endorsed by the American Stroke Association, shown to improve patient outcomes and decrease the risk of death or disability. We are also the only hospital in the region using equipment to provide life-saving, catheter-based treatment known as endovascular clot removal.

“THE DEDICATED STROKE UNITS ARE PROVEN TO HAVE BETTER OUTCOMES. THIS IS A GREAT STEP FORWARD FOR OUR COMMUNITY.” — J. Ivan Lopez, MD, FAAN, Medical Director, Renown Institute for Neurosciences

HELPING A STROKE SURVIVOR FIGHT BACK TO LIFE Christina Goyette had it all. At age 36, she had a great job, wonderful health, and thrilling hobbies that included dirt biking and water sports. But in April 2013 all that changed when Christina suffered the unimaginable — a stroke. Despite being paralyzed for eight weeks, Christina, a self-proclaimed fighter, battled to put the devastation of that stroke behind her and has, thus far, regained 90 percent of her physical function.

54

“The staff at Renown has helped me so much,” Christina says. “They’ve given me hope and the encouragement I’ve needed to keep pushing forward — to walk again, to talk again, to eat again, to get back every part of life that my stroke took away.” Today, Christina is lifting weights daily in an effort to regain full dexterity of her left side, while also relearning to type, a skill that will bolster her ability to get back into the work force full time. “I’m on my way back,” she proclaims, “and with Renown on my team, I’m not stopping until I’m at 110 percent!”

EXCEPTIONAL CARE FOR ALL OUR REGION’S KIDS They are a wonder and a joy, the very embodiment of hope and possibility. Here at Renown, we believe the children of our community, every last one of them, deserve the very best in healthcare — the kind of care that doesn’t just get them well, but keeps them well. 56

At Renown Children’s Hospital, we’ve built programs and services to meet their special needs, such as establishing the only dedicated children’s ER in the region. Medical problems and hospital stays are never fun, especially for kids. But in our children’s ER, we’ve worked to make hospital visits less intimidating and stressful for children and their families.

57

Staffed by a specially trained team of care providers who are as good with kids as they are with medicine, this one-of-a-kind ER features a separate lobby designed specifically for the comfort of young patients, as well as playful treatment areas furnished with child-sized medical equipment.

LIFE AFTER NICU: BABY ASHER TURNS 1 Little Asher’s arrival was anything but typical. He was born 14 weeks premature and weighed less than 2 pounds. He also had paralyzed vocal cords and a serious heart problem known as a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), where abnormal blood flow occurs between two major arteries connected to the heart. Asher spent 161 days at Renown, 126 of them in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 20 in our Pediatric ICU. He underwent ligation surgery to repair his PDA, as well as a tracheotomy, an incision in the windpipe made to relieve an obstruction to breathing. According to Asher’s mother, Charlene, while their time here was obviously trying, it was also a time of great support.

58

“The nurses here are phenomenal. They taught me how to feed Asher through his port (a small medical appliance installed beneath the skin) so that I could finally bring him home,” says Charlene. “They helped me find the strength to make the very best of a tough situation.”

59

Today, Asher is home and happy, and recently celebrated his first birthday.
