Springtime is all about discovery – finding the beautiful where, just yesterday, there was only dreariness — As you drive past a tree in your neighborhood that looked nearly dead on Monday, suddenly on Thursday, fluffy pink blossoms bloom in abundance. Spring’s renewal is truly amazing to behold. We are incredibly lucky to live in a region full of undiscovered wonders. In the photo above, you’ll see my delight in holding an adorable little starfish creature that I discovered on a recent field trip with my daughter to Frederick’s ESSL (Earth and Space Science Lab). Such a small, unassuming building on Madison Street is home to beautiful and unexpected wonders. Explore it some time, with or without a child in tow. It’s truly wonderful. For the last several months, droves of folks seeking sweet and savory breakfast treats have found their way to a tiny storefront on a small street in sleepy Middletown, where the lines can spill out the door, but customers say the baked goods are well worth the wait. They’re all here for the latest creations from Deb’s Artisan Bakehouse – “all-scratch, rustically executed, small batches of handcrafted deliciousness,” as owner Deb King describes.

“As I grow and change, so will my mission, but I will remain steadfast in my mission to wow you,” Deb says, and “wow” she does, with croissants, pastries, galettes, pies, tarts, quiche, sweet breads, bagels and more. Like, a LOT more, such as “cruffins” – a cross between a croissant and muffin that towers high with flavors such as Boston Cream or Blueberry Lemon. Or something Deb calls “Chaos” – a concoction that includes croissant dough piled with an amazing array of flavors and textures, which change week to week.
Deb and her staff (often sporting T-shirts proclaiming “Body By Deb”) bake all week, but are only open for customers on Saturdays (when sweet and savory pastries are for sale) and on Sundays (bagel day).
We advise filling your takeout box with as many treats as possible each Saturday or Sunday, to hold you over until the next weekend, when Deb’s opens again.

It’s no surprise that parents raising children with developmental disabilities often put their own needs last, out of necessity. But a special place of respite in New Market is offering a way for caretakers to give themselves the time and attention they need, too.

Guests typically visit for two- or three-night stays from Friday through Monday, and there’s no limit to how many times they may book a room. Roberts arranges special weekends that cater to groups of women or men who are raising children with the same diagnosis, as well as holiday-themed weekends. People have come from all over the country to stay at the inn, and Roberts’ long-term goal is to offer such a place in every state. She greets guests when they arrive and remains available by phone, but leaves them alone for the duration of their stay. She provides the retreat space, but then allows guests to do whatever is needed to decompress. “It’s very therapeutic just to have people who understand what you’re going through,” Roberts says. “It’s a safe space to talk about how they’re really feeling, without any judgment.” Fathers aren’t left out of the equation. Groups of dads are invited on select weekends, for
THE PROPERTY Roberts acquired the property at 23 W. Main St., in September and opened it for retreats by November — with many hours of painting and decorating in between to get it ready for its first guests. It currently has six beds and two-and-a-half baths, but Roberts plans to expand to eight beds and make one of the rooms handicap accessible. There is a large living room and elegant dining room, a wine bar and kitchen, and a sun porch, where people like to congregate in the mornings over coffee and magazines. The house has so many nooks and crannies, it’s easy for people to spend time alone or in fellowship, depending on how they’re feeling. “Sometimes moms are so beat down, they don’t come out of their rooms the whole time,” Roberts says. The bedrooms are named after donors, and some are themed — such as a Maryland history room.

Mountains of unopened mail and school-related papers, stacks of old magazines that you still haven’t gotten around to reading, closets full of clothes and shoes that fit you back when one of the Bushes were in the Oval Office … if your home sounds like this, then it’s time you called in some organizing reinforcements.

Spring is the perfect time of year to get yourself, your home, your family and your life organized. Open up your windows, let the fresh air in, and get all of that old stuff out! But if you’ve watched all available episodes of “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” on Netflix and still lack the motivation to get started on your own projects, never fear. Several Frederick-based businesses exist to help anyone who wants more organization in their lives, but lack the strategies to get started. Carolyn West of Middletown opened Organize Me! in July 2016 with the goal of helping Frederick Countians stop being embarrassed about their clutter, and start getting serious about getting it out of their lives. Sophia Heydari of New Market, a self-described “natural-born organizer” opened her business, Love Your Space Organizers, about one year ago, turning her personal passion into her profession.

West earned a degree in business administration and throughout her college years envisioned working in hospitality management, focusing on organizing and perfecting all of the details that go into banquets and other events. After working in the hotel industry for eight years, she realized the work was not as fulfilling to her as she had hoped. She credits a human resources manager with helping her discover a passion for owning her own business. “She took the time to ask me what I liked to do, attempting to match me with a fitting position,” West said. “When I told her I like to organize, tidy and focus on details, she said, ‘why don’t you start a business in home organizing?’ It was like a light bulb went off.” Once her goal was clear, West worked with the Maryland Women’s Business Center through the Frederick County Office of Economic Development to help her stay focused and motivated and give her the tools to begin her business. Without the center, she said, “I would not be where I am today. (They) provided me with invaluable advice, tools and an abundance of time.”

West says she’s always had an organized personality, and even as a child, she’d look for areas around the house to organize and keep tidy. “When I see a cluttered area, I go into autopilot and just know how to get the space in order,” she said. She uses her organizational strengths to help clients of all kinds, including individuals and families. She says she’s open to any client who is willing to openly sort through their items, or have them sorted by her. “Clients often don’t know where to start and feel embarrassed by their homes,” she said. “I want clients to know that I have seen it before and am quite frankly now immune to your clutter!” West tries to clearly convey that clients don’t need to feel embarrassed or ashamed by their homes: “Piles of clothes or paper, dirt and dust, broken items, intimate items, mouse poop – I’ve seen it all.” She strives to build a personal connection with clients, since, she says, organizing is a highly personal experience. Clients must feel through all of their belongings. Her ultimate goal is to provide clients with a home “in which they are able to relax and not have it be a source of stress.”

On a recent project, West helped a mom with multiple children figure out her kitchen, multiple closets, school supply storage, multiple drawers, basement playroom and laundry room, garage and attic storage, all in a total of 27 hours. She helped her client make areas such as the kitchen, playroom and storage more functional day to day. And she helped her client let go of multiple carloads of stuff she didn’t need. “As the project carried on, she became freed by the items she was saying goodbye to in order to have less clutter in her home,” West said. “In the end, the home was less cluttered, drawers and closets weren’t packed and there was a change not only in the home, but the way the client viewed some belongings.” Even though organizing is her business, West admits her own space isn’t always perfect. She makes a point to tidy and clean her space every single weekend, without fail. “It’s essential to always stick to a schedule if you want your home to get more organized,” she said. And every day, she sorts through her mail, standing in front of the trashcan. She suggests this tip to everyone, to significantly reduce all the paper clutter you see in your home.

As a mom, I’ve learned to be flexible, creative, and gained the realization that things aren’t are always as they appear … I appreciate and support individualism in all aspects of life, especially with organizing.” Heydari has been an organizer all of her life, and even before she started her business, was often sought out by family and friends for input on organization, planning and productivity.

Heydari said that one of her first professional organizing projects was a nursery for a first-time mom, whose dedicated space was less than ideal. Heydari helped her get to work by talking about the functionality of the room and furniture placement, assembling furniture and staging the room with baby clothes and toys. The whole project took only a few hours, and the effort was well worth it. When it was all done, the mom-to-be felt ready to welcome her new little one. “The greatest reward was seeing my client happy, inspired and ready to take on motherhood,” Heydari said. “It was such a pleasurable experience.” Heydari admits that it is impossible to stay perfectly organized all of the time, particularly when you are raising a family. Homes constantly evolve, she says, through a day or week or year, as families grow and change. Change means a disruption to some organization, but it doesn’t necessarily spell disaster, she says. “When you have systems in place, like I do, you have a method and structure to return to. I often revisit my organization to see if it still fits my needs and if it doesn’t, I change it,” Heydari said. “What I suggest to others is to have systems in place to support healthy habits, but at the same time, live, get messy, and enjoy life and return to your system when you’re done.” Interested in getting your own space more organized? Heydari recommends taking on small projects first to avoid overwhelm. “Instead of organizing your entire kitchen, start with the pantry or a drawer,” she said. And celebrate small victories along the way.

There’s a new gallery in town, adding its own unique flavor to Frederick’s art scene. From the outside, District Arts appears as a small space on North Market Street, but inside, it’s quite large and has the sophistication of a gallery you might find in a much larger city. After a packed-house grand opening in March, the contemporary art gallery is officially open and ready to provide you with some eye candy — and perhaps a piece to take home with you. The gallery represents artists based throughout Maryland, including Frederick County and beyond. They’re displayed alongside nationally recognized artists, giving the space a unique bent within the arts community. At District Arts, artistic disciplines and styles are wide-ranging: abstract paintings, digital paintings, stoneware, plein air, portraiture and everything in between (even mixed-media pieces made of books). The space is impressive, with open ceilings and exposed brick, giving it an industrial chic aesthetic. Not only is it conveniently located at the center of Downtown on North Market Street, but it’s spacious enough to comfortably showcase work by the 30 artists it represents simultaneously — something of a rarity in Frederick. Owners Staci and Bill McLauchlan, artists themselves, met several artists while touring the country exhibiting their own work, which inspired them to open their own gallery.

BECKY JANE SEWS Becky Jane Onderdonk is a fashion designer with a love for vintage fabrics and prints. The longtime Frederick fashionista once known as Becky Jane Harrington got married last fall, which meant that she wasn’t just a bride-to-be with the usual stresses. She, of course, designed and sewed her own wedding gown … and her husband’s outfit … and basically everything worn by the entire bridal party. What was she thinking? What any artist is thinking: She had a vision, and she tirelessly saw it through to the end. Onderdonk grew up in Frederick and lived here for most of her life until moving into a house in Waynesboro, Pa., with her husband. She usually spends weekdays rising early and working at her home studio, with frequent commutes into Frederick to teach sewing classes at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center (she catches up on sewing and fashion podcasts during the drive). After several years of working on her craft while holding down various part-time jobs, she took

KCITYBAGS In high school, Kelly Roberts made sewing patterns from her sketches and figured things out through trial and error. She went on to study fashion merchandizing at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Fast-forward through many years of working in retail and raising a family, and Roberts had slowed down on making her own work. After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, she began sewing tote bags, selling them, and giving the proceeds to victims of the tragedy. This caught on. People loved them, which encouraged her to make more. Soon, she started selling a variety of bags, purses and clothes online. Her two sons recently left home, allowing Roberts

Perhaps Hyder is best known locally for her costume designs. She created her first costumes for Flying Dog Brewery promotional videos by filmmaker Tim Martin and found that she loved the imaginative quality of the work. Those videos prompted her to reach out to the Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) four years ago. She’s since worked on costumes for several plays there, including “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Peter and the Starcatcher,” two of her favorites. “Original plays are so cool because no one’s done the costumes before. It’s fun to try to translate the director’s vision into clothes, and I also work with the set designer and the lighting designer so that everything [complements] each other,” she says. “We use Pinterest like crazy.” She’s also done costume design for McDaniel “Leda,” by filmmaker Samuel Tressler IV. My first stop was a two-hour drive from Frederick, in the Maryland/Delaware border town known as Marydel. Here, Harvest Ridge Winery offers wine tastings, tours and a number of special events. The tasting room looks like a general store, and the production area is made to represent a barn, paying homage to farmland in the area. About 90 percent of the grapes used in their wines are grown on the 190 acres they own in both Maryland and Delaware. Given the soil and airflow from the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, there is a general belief that grapes grown here are comparable to those from France. (The one grape they do get from an outside provider is the Concord, which needs a colder climate.) For a nominal fee, you may taste eight wines. The 2016 Blue Hen Blue pays homage to the Delaware state bird and is their most popular wine. A blend of Concord grapes and blueberries, it tastes like an adult grape juice. If you are looking for something other than wine, check out their Rebel Seed Cidery, which offers a number of hard cider drinks on site. They also host a popular food truck festival the first weekend in April, with about 25 food trucks and 4,000 attendees.
HISTORICALLY GREAT STOPS Delaware played a key role during the Revolutionary War and the founding of our country. The local skater community let out a collective sigh when Pitcrew closed its doors at the end of 2017. And then, a collective “yes!” could be heard when Pitcrew manager Brent Porterfield opened a new skate shop on the 200 block of North Market Street the following spring. “I decided to pick up the torch and give the skateboard community a place to go,” he says. Embark Skate Shop has filled a void in the community, and it also draws people from surrounding cities and states. Like many core skate shops, it’s a destination for skaters throughout the region. It’s stocked with everything needed to get on a board and go: decks, trucks, wheels, bearings and all the accessories. They also carry clothing and shoes from some of the top skateboard brands, as well as local brands. “All skateboarders embark on their own journey through skateboarding that starts with a single push,” Porterfield says of the company name. “Most skateboarders have amazing stories to tell about their own journey that began with getting their first skateboard at their local skate shop. I am here to help the community by sponsoring events like contests to hosting events including demos, art shows with local skateboarders and video premieres with local to nationally known companies.”
