letter from the editor This issue is all about the holidays. Family, food and fun are what the holidays are all about, and Pugs love nothing more than being in the thick of it all. This issue also includes results from the Pug Dog Club of America's National Specialty, that was held in Indianapolis. We were lucky enough to attend, and as always it was great to see Pug folks from around the world, celebrating the silly little breed that we all have in common. Pugs365 wishes you and your family, fur and human, a happy and safe holiday season. Laurie Kirkpatrick

A book could be written (and plenty have been) on the subject of foundation training. Heres a list of some important foundation training skills and games that are mandatory (in my book) for all dogs, critical if they are destined to be involved in dog sports, or simply helpful in having a well adjusted and fun-to-live-with family member. I am not a professional dog trainer. I’m just passionate about training and truly love working with animals and developing the bond we share. No matter which trainer (or many trainers, as I do) you follow, positive reinforcement with consistency and good timing are key foundation elements, ones we as trainers must master. I think most people would agree that all dogs should be taught “sit”, “down”, “come”, “stay”/“wait”, and many add in “stand”. This article is more about games and skills that are also crucial training, many incorporating several things together. The first thing I will mention is clicker training. There was a time when I was not such a clicker advocate. I thought since you don’t always have a clicker on you, using a voice marker like ‘yes’ will work just as well, if not better. Over the years I have changed my tune on that thinking, however. Having a voice marker is still great, since you always have your voice with you. But by including a clicker, I now have two markers available. When teaching any new skill, I find that a clicker gives a more precise and clear marker that is perfectly consistent, since no matter how hard we try, our voice is never perfectly consistent. A clicker gives a clear message without overstimulating or distracting them, since some dogs find your voice marker too distracting, causing them to lose focus. A dog that is clicker savvy is a dog that offers behaviors and actively seeks precisely what it is that earns them a click. It is a dog that becomes faster and easier to train, since it marks the precise behavior you are looking for. Using a treat to mark something can unfortunately end up rewarding and reinforcing the wrong behavior, since they are often excited about the treat, which causes them to break their position. A dog can become confused about exactly what it is that you are seeking without a precise marker. It's also difficult to use a treat if the behavior you are training involves the dog being in motion. Using a clicker is also beneficial to the human, since it teaches them to watch for and mark the exact desired behavior. It also helps them learn to recognize and reward the “try” when something is particularly difficult to teach. It keeps the dogs encouraged and lets them know they are getting warmer. The dogs keep trying, which earns them a jackpot when they finally get it right. A fun, easy and important game to play is to say your dogs name, then click when they look into your eyes.

Before you can train your dog, you need their attention. Teaching them that their name means to look at you is the first step in getting their attention. (You should be careful not to call their name when you are upset, angry or disappointed. Instead, use something like “oops”or “oh oh”, saving their name to use when you are asking for

their attention.) Reward your dog for looking into your eyes after you've said their name by clicking and treating. Eventually, it will become a habit for them to respond to their name immediately after you call them. It is essential to always get a sit and wait until released for dinner. Having your dog sit and wait until you give a release for dinner can help prevent food aggression (at least for their dinner bowl), and teaches them self-control. When a dog is taught to ask for something, and has to be given permission to take it, is a huge psychological help. The opposite is also true. When the dog just initiates and takes ownership of things, they don't respect the fact that you control the resources. Voice commands are not necessary to play this game. You already have your dogs undivided attention when you are holding their dinner bowl. Raise it over their head and wait for them to sit. A held out hand gesture creates the wait, and moving away from the bowl gives them a release (the verbals and markers can all be added in later). Getting to eat their dinner is the instant reward. All of my dogs scatter to their feeding spots and sit and wait for me to get there and put the bowl down. I still

mix up timing and my position when I say “OK”. My new (completely untrained what-so-ever) foster caught on to the game pretty well in only one week. If he is premature in running to his bowl, I simply pick it up and we try again. He was reported to have food aggression, so this was doubly important for him to learn. This is a great exercise in self control, and comes in super handy for a start line stay in agility. I practice my start line stay at least twice a day, from day one as puppies, working on this everyday at every meal. I've never even had to train for it in agility, because it just “was”, thanks to waiting for a release to their food bowl. Eventually you can actually even use the words “sit” and “wait”, and a release word like “OK” or “break”; but these commands are not the most important part here. Speaking of resource guarding, we should practice taking items away from our dogs, and “pay” them with a high value treat. The object is getting them in a habit of looking up at you in anticipation of a great payout when they have something and you approach them. To teach this, give them something of medium value, and have something of greater value ready. Take the medium value item away from them, immediately replacing it with the greater value reward. Mix it up by sometimes giving them the original object back. You are teaching them that when you take something away from them, they will get something even better in return. You can eventually pair this with a voice command of “drop it”. This is something that should be practiced and reinforced for life, and should be a game they LOVE because it has such a great payoff. Then, when you really need it because they have something dangerous or off limits in their mouth, it will be a habit and they won’t even hesitate to let go of the item. You want to have conditioned them with such great rewards that on the rare occasions you only have praise to give them, or can’t give the object back, it will still be OK. Having a crate trained dog is mandatory training, in my book. I am always surprised at the number of people that have dogs that “don’t like their crates”. It is invalu-

able to play crate games that make the dogs excited about, and happy to be in, their crates. Even if you don't typically crate your dog, they should be familiar with being crated. In the event that they are injured and must be crated, or you must leave you dog at a friend’s or family member’s house, having them comfortable with being crated is important. Being in a new environment with new dogs and new people (especially without their owner) is a stress for any dog, but if they have their crate as a secure, safe and familiar haven, this is a big help, and is much less stressful for your dog. You can teach your dog to love a crate by rewarding them for being in the crate. At first, put them in for short intervals, rewarding them for being "calm" in the crate, then letting them out. Eventually, they will associate the crate with the reward, making it a positive thing. They will also understand that they won't be in there forever, and will learn to relax until they are released from the crate. If your dog is particularly stressed about being in a crate, a stuffed kong to chew on while they are in there can add to the positive association. Mat or “Place” training is a must. Like the crate, learning to relax on a mat can also create a safe spot in an unfamiliar environment. It can be a great way to calm down an overexcited dog, and can be a handy tool to prevent unwanted behaviors (such as rushing a door, being overexcited when guests come or leave, or in my case, a dog that can’t resist the trash can that has to be out when you are preparing dinner). It is just so much easier to prevent problems, instead of trying to fix things once they happen, and a mat can help with that. Remember that in training animals, you want to teach them what you DO want, not what you DON’T. If you give them a task to do, they can’t be engaged in unwanted behavior. Having the dog go to their “place”, can solve many issues. Place training is also a good self control exercise, and teaches a good “stay”. The goal is to have them stay on the mat until they are released. Staying on the mat earns them treats while they are on the mat, and there are no treats off the mat. Once they are good at staying on the mat, you can incorporate throwing treats on the floor off the mat, but they can’t get them until the release word is given. Cover the

treat with your foot if they make the wrong choice and try to leave prematurely. Ava loves this game so much- I need to keep her mat up out of her reach when not in use, or she will go pull it down to ask me to play. Acquiring my newest dog Ava has added to my “must do” games, and tweaked a couple I already did. Some of those games above had self control and calming elements, but Ava is a dog that has a trash fetish, and will table surf. This got me looking into more self control games and led me to Susan Garrett’s “It’s ‘Yer Choice”. This is now on my “must do” foundation list. It's Yer Choice You can look on-line for details, but essentially it’s a game that incorporates several key elements into one game. It also utilizes the concept to keep everything in the positive when training. Teach the dog what you DO want, not what you DON’T want. Playing this game eliminates the need to teach a “Leave it” command, since it teaches self control and waiting for permission to “Take it”. It incorporates this and eye contact, and is a great calming and focus game. Because you are using a fist full of treats, it is also a great game for puppies that get overstimulated and want to bite hands. The end result is holding out a fistful of treats and having your dog sit and look at you waiting for permission to take them. If they prematurely try to eat them, they are met with a closed fist. If they are excited and pawing at your hand, you just wait them out with a closed fist. It’s amazing how quickly they figure out the way to the food is to sit and look at you in the eye. Eventually even when you open your hand, they sit and look at you waiting for the ok to “Take it”.

up, they look at you. You can grab it if it’s something off limits and give them a different reward, or you can give them the OK to “Take it”. This works better than the “Leave it” command, which can shut down a soft dog, or many times turns into a “hurry up and eat it”. You are giving them something to do- look at you, instead of telling them what not to do. They say that each dog that comes into your life teaches you something. It is very true that the more dogs that come into my life (not just my own new puppies, but also my friends’ dogs, and dogs I foster and dogsit), the larger my foundation “musts” list grows and evolves.

Once they are good at it, you eventually up the ante, and throw a treat on the floor at them. If they go for it, you cover it with your hand (or foot). Again the way to the treat, is to look at you.

If you are fortunate enough to find a breeder that incorporates Jane Killion’s “Puppy Culture” program with their litters, you will have an invaluable head start on many things, but contrary to what they say, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. It is likely to just be a longer more difficult process, and although it's is never too late to go back and lay a good foundation, prevention is always better than the cure and is faster and easier.

This game comes in very handy for real life scenarios, of dropping food on the floor when you are cooking or eating (or worse dropping a pill on the floor), and instead of your dog running to scarf it

Training is about practicing and creating good habits. It’s a never ending process, and the more you train your dog and build your relationship, the more easily trainable your dog becomes.

Fly?

a Agility Trial

Just like the Indy Race Cars we came in and were Fast and Furious on our courses! Twenty Two Exhibitors brought 32 Pugs to run Agility at Pawsitive Partners in Indianapolis, a total of 136 runs! This by far was one of the biggest Trials we have had, and we couldn’t have done it without our great judge Mary Mullen and some wonderful HELP! Mary had beautiful courses and nested them so that course changes were minimal. We ran two trials concurrent with each other, for instance, Novice Standard in Trial #1 competed……we renumbered the course and Novice Standard in Trial #2 ran. Being able to set the trial up this way allowed us to offer two chances in each class to Q and even gave us time for a wonderful Veterans Showcase at lunch. It was so good to see our Senior Pugs get to “run” agility again, not a dry eye in the house. My help was awesome! Thanks to each and every person who worked the classes, helped set up and take down and take pictures! We were without a photographer so it was nice that so many people jumped in and took photos and videos and later shared them with the group. What great memories we made! Thanks to everyone who donated to the raffle, we made over $400 and that along with making a profit on the Trial itself put us well over $1400 total. This money will help make sure we continue to have nice ribbons, and a nice facility to hold our trials. It was so much fun to finally meet so many “friends” in person that I had corresponded with on Facebook. What wonderful, fast, well behaved Pugs we do have! What a great network for offering help and training advice we have! I think we should all pat ourselves on the back for a job well done on this one and get ready for next year!

Veteran's Showcase

14

Every year since 2015, a Veteran's Agility Showcase is held during the PDCA Agility Trial. Open to any Pug older than seven years old that is not entered in the Agility Trial, it allows Pugs and their handlers to "strut their stuff " on their terms. This year there were ten Pugs entered in the Showcase! Each Pug is awarded a Ribbon and a trip around the ring, while spectators simultaneously cheer and shed tears. Allowing these now-retired athletes to run (or walk, or be carried) again is the highlight of the Trial.
