PADMASHRI AWARD TO PROF. J.A.K. TAREEN

➠ National Recognition to Vice-Chancellor

Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University is an educationist with forward-looking vision. He has won many accolades for his selfless and altruistic ventures directed towards equality, education and empowerment. In addition, he is a dynamic, enterprising and successful administrator. To mention a few: He transformed the University of Kashmir into academic excellence and a land of peace and serenity. With his efforts, he gave a new lease of life to the university by making it as one of the best academic abodes in India. Apart from being a good administrator, he has also made large scale contributions to higher education by serving as a member in most of the UGC and MHRD committees. After Kashmir University, he worked as the Executive Director of South Asia Foundation, New Delhi and then moved to Pondicherry University. Within a period of 3 years, unprecedented expansion and development work has been undertaken under his leadership. The University started two P.G. Centres at Karaikal and Andamans and 10 new courses. The students strength jumped from 1400 to 3200, the faculty from 180 to porses to reach 460, with a modern library, 800 acres of WIFI campus and state of the art laboratories. He announced free transport to all students who commute from city to campus and free hostel accommodation for all girl students. To commute inside the campus, three battery operated vehicles have been arranged for faculty, staff and students. His vision is to find a place for Pondicherry University among the top ten Universities of the country.

In recognition of his academic excellence, dynamic leadership qualities and his active participation in the development of Higher Education, the Government of India has honored him with the prestigious National award of ‘PADMASHRI’. The Editorial Board, Faculty, Staff and Students extend their felicitations to him on the conferment of this award.

Convocation News The 19th Annual Convocation of Pondicherry University was held on 20th March, 2009 in the Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium. Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha was the Chief Guest of the Convocation who has delivered the Convocation address. Shri Madanjeet Singh, Founder, South Asia Foundation & Goodwill Ambassador to UNESCO and Dr.M.Mylswamy Annadurai, Project Director of Chandrayaan-1, ISRO have also graced the occasion. In this Convocation, Shri.Somnath Chatterjee and Shri.Madanjeet Singh were conferred with Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). Dr.M.Mylswamy Annadurai was conferred with Doctor of Science (Honoris causa). The Vice Chancellor Prof.J.A.K.Tareen, in his convocation address narrated the developments of the University and highlighted the welfare measures extended to the students of this University. Initiatives like free accommodation to all girl students in Hostels, and free transport to every student of the University. Eco-friendly electric cars inside the campus for students to commute between hostels, library and laboratories internet browing centre, multi Gym for boys and Girls are to mention a few. A new stadium for Cricket, new playfields for hockey, football, volleyball, tennis and athletics tracks are being constructed. The entire 780 acre of campus was Wi-Fi enabled with 100% power back up in all departments, offices and hostels. In this Convocation, a total number of 15,046 Degrees were awarded, which include 8,847 Bachelor’s, 4,939 Master’s, 24 M.Phils, 56 Ph.Ds, and 1,180 Diplomas. On the whole about 220 Gold Medals and 85 Prize Winners were obtaining their awards and prizes during this Convocation. Shri.Madanjeet Singh has appreciated the developments of the University and announced an allocation of half-a-million US dollars for the establishment of a separate Institute for South Asian Regional Cooperation. A memorable Cultural Programme was held at the auditorium of culturalcum-Convention Centre in the evening. Members from

Department of History The Department of History, Pondicherry University, organized a Two-day National Seminar on Dominance and Resistance in Colonial and Post Colonial India on 23rd and 24th March 2009. The Seminar was sponsored by Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. Prof. Aditya Mukherjee, of Contemporary Indian History at the Centre for Historical Studies, and Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Study, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi delivered the Inaugural Address and Prof. Mridula Mukherjee, Chairperson, Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, New Delhi delivered the Keynote Address. Prof. B.B. Mohanty, Head, Department of Sociology, Pondicherry University delivered the Felicitation Address. The Valedictory function was presided over by Shri. S. Loganthan, Registrar, Pondicherry University. Prof. D. Subramanyam Reddy, Former Head, Department of History, S.V. University, Tirupati offered felicitations. Prof. Adapa Satyanarayana, Osmania University, Hyderabad and Member, Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi, delivered the Keynote Address. Historians and Scholars from different parts of India participated in the Seminar and presented their papers, which are being published in the form of a book. Dr. K. Venugopal Reddy was the Coordinator of the Seminar.

The Department of History, Pondicherry University, conducted a three-day National Seminar on Cultural Transformation from Iron Age to Early Historic: An Archaeological Perspective between 25th & 27th March 2009. The Seminar was sponsored by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai. Prof. P.J. Centre for Bioinformatics A National seminar on “Current Trends in Bioinformatics Teaching and Research” was organized by the Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University between 16th and 18th February 2009. More than 100 participants from academic institutions and industry participated in the seminar. The main idea behind organizing this seminar was to popularize the currently used techniques in this field among students and researchers from related fields and to discuss the issues that lay in the intersection area of the various fields of biological and chemical sciences. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. A. Gnanam, former Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University & former Chairman, NAAC, Bangalore. He highlighted the crucial and ever-growing role of bioinformatics in the field of pharmacy & biotechnology. The seminar was organized by Prof. P. P. Mathur, coordinator of the centre and was funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. Some of the experts who participated in the deliberations of the conference are Prof. N. Gautam and Prof. Velmurugan from Madras University, Prof. K. International Conference CALIBER 2009 – on “E-Content Management – Challenges and Strategies” was organised from 25th to 27th February 2009. About 400 delegates from over ten countries participated to deliberate on content management software, tools, technology and strategies, standards and protocol, Web 2.0 and e-publishing.

The workshop on E-Resources was organised for the Principals of affiliated colleges on 27th June 2009 with the objective that they get a broader perspective of the information products available to facilitate e-learning and research. They could also gain a better understanding of the mandatory infrastructure and skilled library professionals required at their respective colleges to be one among the National Information Infrastructure network initiated by the UGC/MHRD.

User Orientation Workshop on EBSCO databases namely Academic Source complete (6100 + full text periodicals) and Business Source Complete (3383 full text + Journals) was organised on 28th May 2009. Faculty and Research Scholars were trained in search skills for accessing the databases subscribed to by the university.

Department of Tourism Studies National Seminar The Department of Tourism Studies, School of Management, Pondicherry University, Puducherry in association with the South India Hotel and Restaurant Association (SIHRA) took a step forward in organizing a one day national seminar on “The Crisis Management – The Challenge of Tourism & Hospitality” on 30th April 2009 to deliberate upon many underlying issues and challenges of the global tourism industry vis-à-vis the Indian Tourism sector. The Seminar was inaugurated by Shri G. Venkatraman, Secretary General, SIHRA, who presented a detail profile, objectives and functions of SIHRA. He urged the tourism fraternity to join hands together with SIHRA for combating the current challenges and issues very tactfully. Prof. Manjula Choudhary, Chairman, Department of Tourism, Kurukshetra University, Haryana, delivered the keynote address on crisis management for sustaining tourism business. The seminar discussed two important themes, such as “Managing Tourism Boom in the wake of Economic Meltdown” and “Safety and Security Threats: Sustaining Tourism Business Opportunities” in two parallel technical sessions. The first technical session was initiated with the chairman’s remark that “Tourism is more vulnerable in the present economic downturn and it is going to be more acute in the next 2 years”. There were 14 presenters who outlined their research works on economic crises and impact on tourism growth. The second technical session was on “Safety and Security Threats: Sustaining Tourism Business Opportunities”. The session had 18 different presentations which mostly outlined on the impact of safety and security threats on the business opportunities of tourism industry. The valedictory address was delivered by Mr Samuel Mathew, Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Puducherry and he spoke about the economic crises that have affected the Western countries in the first instant, which gradually affected the Gulf countries later eventually impacting India too. Eight different ranges of hotel properties are in the pipeline in Puducherry to cater to the growing need of hotel rooms. He lauded the role of Hotel Mass for its contribution to the development of hospitality education.

Department of Physical Education and Sports The department of Physical Education and Sports organized a one day national workshop on 24th February 2009 on fitness to overcome life style diseases in the J.N. Auditorium. Prof. A. Balasubramanian, Director, Culture and Cultural Relations, Pondicherry University inaugurated the workshop and gave useful suggestions to overcome life style diseases. Many eminent resource persons from other states participated and graced the workshop. The national seminar on Role of fitness in Enhancing Quality life was organized by Students Welfare Council on 3rd and 4th April 2009 at Pondicherry University. The students of M.P.Ed and M.Phil and Ph.D scholars participated and gained knowledge in the field of Physical Education.

Department of Commerce The Second International Conference on Micro Finance (ICOMFI – 2009) was held during 21st to 23rd January 2009. Prof. J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor presided over the inauguration and Dr. K.G. Karmakar, Managing Director of NABARD inaugurated the conference, Shri. S.A. Bhat, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Overseas Bank and Mr. Aloysius Fernandex, Executive director, MYRADA delivered special address and Mr. Malcolm Harper, Chairman, EDU (UK) Ltd delivered the key note address. Six panel discussions were conducted with experts drawn from various organizations like Standard Chartered Bank, State Bank of India, Indian Institute of Banking and Finance, Repco Bank, HDFC Bank, Indian Bank and SIDBI. As part of the conference, half a day field visit to Self Help Groups and product expo was organized. Thirty three foreign delegates along with 83 authors, 30 delegates and 30 resource persons attended the conference. Prof. A. Balasubramanian, Director of Culture and Cultural Relations, presided over the valedictory function on 23rd January 2009. Prof. Furqan Qamar, Adviser (Education), Planning Commission delivered the valedictory address and Ms. Vijayalakshmi Das, CEO, FWWB delivered the special address during the valedictory function.

Department of French A Joint Training Programme in Technical Translation was organized in collaboration with Renault Mahindra Automobile Industry and two universities in Tamil Nadu (Madras University and Madurai Kamaraj University) from 19th to 24th January 2009. The Programme consisted of three workshops, one each in the three universities and training and evaluation through Internet. At the end of three workshops and training through internet, certificates were awarded and placement opportunities would be given to deserving candidates in Renault Mahindra Automobile industry in Chengulpet. The first workshop and training programme was held in Pondicherry University. À An open house training for the benefit of the students of Pondicherry University as well as for the students of the affiliated colleges in Pondicherry, in order to showcase various higher educational opportunities in France was organized on 21st February 2009 in collaboration with the Campus France, Cultural Wing of the French Embassy in India, New Delhi. It was largely attended by students from various departments of the University and from many affiliated colleges in Pondicherry. À

The Centre for Women Studies, Pondicherry University, has been conducting weekly Discussion Programme cum Film Screening. A panel discussion was conducted at the Centre on the topic Women and Sports at 2.30 pm on 23rd January 2009. The panelists invited were Dr. D. Sulthana and Dr. G. Vasanthi, sports persons and faculty from the Department of Physical Education, Pondicherry University. The topic, “Women and Sports in the Indian context” was introduced by Jijo Joseph, MPhil scholar. After the presentation, Dr. Sulthana spoke about the benefits of practising sports for good health, particularly for young girls. She highlighted the problems of women in the field of sports and shared her personal experiences. Dr. Vasanthi explained the reasons why women are reluctant to come to the forefront in the sports field. She said “A woman has to overcome more hurdles than men for better achievements”. Apart from these two invited speakers, Dr. S. Murali (Department of English), Mrs. Radhika (Department of Mass Media), Mr. Karthikeyan (Film Director) were some of the personalities who actively participated in the discussion programme.

The Department of International Business organized a Two-Day Faculty Development Programme on “Capital and Derivatives Markets” during 17-18, April 2009 in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange of India Limited, Mumbai for the Faculty Members teaching Management, Commerce, Economics and other allied subjects. As many as 60 faculty members working in various colleges and universities from Tamilnadu and Pondicherry attended the programme. Dr. Mohan K. A Two Day International Seminar on Bakthi Literature was held on 20th and 21st February 2009 at the Conventional-cum-Cultural Centre of Pondicherry University by the School of Tamil in collaboration with Kalaignaan Pathippakam, Chennai.

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology conducted a One Day National Seminar on Recent Advances in Biological Sciences on Friday 13th March 2009, from 9am to 5pm at the Earth Sciences Seminar Hall. The guests (nearly 200) were welcomed by Prof. P.P. Mathur, Head of the Department and the seminar was formally inaugurated by Sri. S. Loganathan, Registrar, Pondicherry University, by lighting the Kuthuvilakku. He emphasised the importance of Biological Sciences and appreciated the good work that the department was carrying out. Prof. K. Muralidhar, FNA, FNASc, FASc, former Head, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi delivered an insightful talk based on his research work and discussed at length the biological effects of pituitary lactogenic hormones using water buffalo as a model. This was followed by a presentation by Prof. Niranjali Devaraj, Head, Department of Biochemistry, University of Madras, on the use, importance and management of Signal Intervention Therapy in Cancer Biology. Students interacted with the speakers and gained knowledge on the research activities of the resource persons. Dr. Manoj Kumar Bhat, Scientist E and Group Head, Cancer Biology, National Center for Cell Science, Pune, spoke on the nature, significance and limitations of Cancer chemotherapy. Centre for Women Studies The Centre has taken up a research project titled Women in Pondicherry: Problems and Prospects. The project works towards collecting and consolidating data, to find gender disaggregated statistics from the existing official documents of the government. Two research assistants and one research fellow have been appointed at the Centre for the purpose. The Centre for Women Studies has links with Pondicherry Women’s Commission, different government departments, Pondicherry police and other stake holders. It also networks with other Centres of women’s studies and NGOs working in related fields. As part of the project the Centre has already collected data on bigamy, gender discrimination, domestic labour etc. At present it has also taken up a study on factors leading to son preference. As part of the preliminary study, information has been collected from the neighbouring villages of Kalapet and Muthialpet . It is also preparing to adopt two villages in Pondicherry.

A Major Research Project titled “Palaeomagnetic Studies on Basic Dykes Occurring in the North Eastern Part of Southern Granulite Terrain of India” funded by Department of Science Technology was completed. It was an interdisciplinary project which overlapped in petrology, geochemistry and palaeomagnetism. Appointed Principal Investigator and Prof. S. Balakrishnan Dean, School of Physical Chemical and Applied sciences was Co- Principal Investigator of the project. The total amount granted was Rs. 30 lakhs. Three persons were trained in that field. Three conference presentations were made. Equipment worth Rs. 12.5 lakhs were procured, installed and utilized. The findings are: 1. the dykes under study show two different episodes of intrusion and 2. The sutured zone has older age. The possible mechanism of formation will be simulated. Two PhD scholars have carried out their research work utilizing the facilities produced in this project.

Archaeological Survey of India granted permission to excavate an archaeological site at Porunthal in Palani taluk of Dindigal district. The excavation would be carried out during summer vacation under the direction of Dr. K. Rajan, Head, Department of History. First time such programme is being initiated in the University. The Central Institute of Classical Tamil and Archaeological Survey of India extended the financial support for the entire programme. The station plans to distribute Radios to school children who participate in all CRS activities and complete a sequence of programmes making upto 60 minutes, with effect from August 2009. All B.Ed College student teachers come forward regularly to offer programmes. PEC students participate in daily schedules. A lot of programmes have been recorded by interacting with the members of the community which are broadcast regularly. The Directorate of Culture and Cultural Relations produced exclusive music albums on various social themes to be distributed among CRS across the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Community College The students of the Community College participated in DREAMZ, an Entrepreneurial Exhibition, held on 7th April 2009. It provided an opportunity for our students to exhibit their creative talents. About 13 stalls were put up by them showcasing their creative business ideas. Some of these stalls were Novelty gifts, Ayurvedic Concepts, Dogs ‘n’ Pups, Screen Printing, Brick Work etc. The products displayed at the venue were also on sale. This initiative was very much welcomed and encouraged by the visitors. Mr. R.D. Saravanan Asst. Manager HR from HYUNDAI, Chennai was the chief guest of the day and he lauded the efforts of the students and gave away prizes to the best stalls. À The Department of Computer Science organized a paper presentation event named “IT Probe” on 17th April 2009 at PUCC. 19 teams presented papers on various topics such as Data Warehousing and Mining, Forensic Computing, Network Security, Linux and Programming Languages Lineage. The Bioscience department of Pondicherry University Community College celebrated the National Science Day on 12.3.09. To enrich and harvest the talents of the students of Biochemistry and Biotechnology courses, papers were presented covering a wide spectrum of topics ranging from space to cell. About 21 students participated. The students went on a field trip (19th March 2009) to the Marine Biology department of the Annamalai University. They visited the tissue culture laboratory at the Biotechnology department as well as the Research Laboratory of the Biochemistry department at Pondicherry University on 27th March 2009. The students participated (21st January 2009, 13th March 2009, 24th March 2009 & 31st March 2009) in various competitions like elocution; essay and poetry writing as well as paper presentation at the state level symposiums conducted by various institutions in and around Pondicherry and won prizes. The faculty of the department attended (13th March 2009 & 24th March 09) the National Seminars conducted by the Depts. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Ecology & Environmental Sciences, Pondicherry University and by few other colleges of Tamilnadu. The final semester students along with faculty produce a Major Play of minimum One hour duration to demonstrate their calibre. It helps the students to get Basic knowledge for directorial process, analyzing a play in terms of Production, interpreting the script and fixing the style and choosing the theatre. The production may be Adult or Children’s Theatre production, based on Dramatic or Non-dramatic script.

On the International Women’s Day, the Pondicherry university initited specific programmes those were womensensitive. At the programme conducted by the Centre for Women’s Studies, the Vice Chancellor, Padmashri Prof. J.A.K. Tareen laid the foundation stone for the Mega Mess for Women. He also inaugurated the battery operated vehicle service that would enable free movement for all within the large campus of the university. He also inaugurated the women’s Gym on the campus the same day. The Centre for Women’s Studies, Pondicherry University celebrated International Women’s Day on 9th March 2009 by conducting a colloquium on the topic “Women and Moral Policing’’. The programme started at 10 am with the welcome address by Dr. Usha, V.T., Reader and Coordinator of Centre for Women’s Studies. She highlighted the relevance of women’s issues and prevention strategies of violence against women and also drew attention to the UN Slogan for International Women’s Day 2009 “Women and Men Unite to End Violence against Women”. This was followed by a short presentation about ‘International Women’s Day- historical background and theme of Women’s Day 2009’ by Ms Divya K, Research Scholar in Women’s Studies. The Centre produced a badge with the UN slogan engraved on it, which was distributed to all the participants who wore it to spread the message. In his inaugural address, Shri. S. Loganathan, Registrar, spoke about the relevance of women’s day in the current scenario. Prof. D. Sambandan, Dean School of Social Science and International Studies, reiterated the UN slogan that womens’ issues are human issues, and these issues need academic concern and research. Dr. Mohanan, B. Pillai looked at women’s issues from a historical perspective. The technical session started at 11.30 am. The guest speaker, Dr. Panchangam, lecturer in Tagore Arts College, explained the concepts of Time and Space in the context of women and moral policing. In the next session, Malathi Maithri poet and social activist, emphasized the need for women’s empowerment. She highlighted the fact that violence against women started even before birth and followed till her death. The afternoon session was followed with a panel discussion on the topic of “Women and Moral Policing” The topic was introduced by Mr. Pradeep, K.D, Research scholar, Women’s Studies. This was followed by short presentations by the panalists Dr. Padma Priya, (Department of Hindi), Dr. D. Charumthy, (Department of Management Studies) Dr. D. Chandrika (Department of History), and Dr. C. Aruna (Department of Sociology). Dr. Chandrika shared the historical perspective and Dr Aruna spoke from sociological perspective. Dr. Padma Priya, explained how women are portrayed in the popular Tamil cinema and looked at the role of women at home sphere before marriage and after marriage. Dr. B. Charumathy also explained the prerequisite of moral policing in the current scenario. After that students and scholars from various departments made their valuable comments and suggestions regarding women and moral policing. The papers presented have been put together and brought out as a booklet—a research document produced by the Centre for Women’s Studies, Pondicherry University. Thereafter Dr. Usha, V.T., Reader and Coordinator Centre for Women’s Studies brought up the various facets of moral policing discussed during the colloquium in her concluding remarks regarding the topic. K.T. Kalaiselvi delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Centre.

MIND SPACE a student organization of the Department of Applied Psychology was officially inaugurated on 28 January 2009 with an introduction of its objectives and proposed activities by Mr. Bharani Kanth, Lecturer in the department. The chief guest for the occasion, Prof. Jayachandran from the Department of Biotechnology, gave a talk on ‘The brain and the mind.’ The programme also included a talk on ‘film appreciation’ by a representative of the Navadarshan Film Society and the screening of the lranian film ‘Children of Heaven’. The maiden venture of MIND SPACE outside the department was the film screenings organized on 18th, and 19th February. The aim of this mini-film fest was to ‘demystify psychology with a handpicked selection of entertaining and thought provoking cinema’. The films screened were based on a particular psychological theme-The Sixth Sense (Extra Sensory Perception), 15 Park Avenue (Schizophrenia) and Thanmathra (Alzheimer’s disease). The screenings were preceded by a brief presentation on the psychological concept that the films deal with and followed by a Q & A session, when faculty members Ms. Shilpa Pandit and Mr. Bharani Kanth clarified doubts posed by the audience. The response to the film shows was in one word, overwhelming and revealed the unending fascination that all share for the human mind and its vagrancies. À

Industry Institute Interface Event (Akanksha)

The Department organized a two day mega industry institute interface event namely ‘AKANKSHA’09’ on 6th & 7th March 2009 in the convention- cum cultural centre. The event was inaugurated by the chief guest Prof. O.P. Khandari, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi. Prof. A. Balasubramanian, Director, Culture and Cultural Relations, Pondicherry University, presided over the inaugural function. Mr. V. Sriram, Regional Director, IRCTC, Chennai, delivered the keynote address. The theme of the first panel discussion was on “Visit India Year- Are We Ready?” and the panelists deliberated upon the theme. The students of MBA (Tourism) performed Theme Skit and gave presentations on cultural tourism, film tourism, civil aviation in India and dooms day tourism. The second panel discussion was on “MICE Tourism: The In thing!” and eminent panel members delivered their viewpoints on the theme. A group of 10 Students of the department attended the conference on the current global financial crisis with the theme “Surfing the Slump” organized by Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai. All the II Year MBA (IB) Students attended a Guest lecture on“HR Recruitment in Current Economic Scenario” by Dr. Gurumurthy, Managing Consultant -HR solutions. During the Semester, different Students’ Groups of the Department attended various Management Meets organized by different Colleges and Universities and won various prizes. À Muthaliandan Vaishnavism Endowment Lecture was held at Thamizh Sangam Building on Vallalar Salai (100 Feet Road), Pudhucherry by the School of Tamil on 13th March 2009. À In the Endowment Lecture, Dr. Rangachari, Former Head, Department of Philosophy, Annamalai University, Chidambaram delivered lecture on “Vaishnava Literataure”. Many devotees from Pudhucherry and neighbouring areas of Tamilnadu were present. À The School of Tamil successfully conducted a one day Endowment Lecture on “Perarizhar Anna” on 15th April 2009 in the Earth Science Seminar Hall of Pondicherry University. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is a premier institute in the country. Its research interests broadly encompass every area of modern astronomical and astrophysical research conducted at different centres of the Institute, such as, Kodaikanal and Kavalur in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore and Hanle in Ladakh (Jammu & Kashmir). The Ph.D Programme was set up in IIA only about 15 years ago, and about 50 Ph.D Scholars so far have been awarded the doctoral degree. Currently, 25 students are working on their Ph.D. Under the Faculty Improvement Programme, the IIA faculty has guided about 20 Ph.D candidates from various colleges, universities and institutions. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics has now signed an MOU with Pondicherry University on April 28, 2009 to start a joint Ph.D programme and to initiate academic collaborations in teaching and research. This MOU facilitates a mutually beneficial relationship, by which the faculty and students of the Pondicherry University will get opportunities to embark on research in challenging areas of astrophysics to unravel mysteries regarding formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and universe.

The AC and EC of the Pondicherry University was held on 4th March 2009 and 19th March 2009 respectively. The meetings approved a new Chapter (Chapter XXII) in the Academic Ordinance regarding establishment of Inter University Collaboration and Research Cell and Guidelines for the preparation of Memorandum of Understanding with other Universities and Institutions. Thermal Analysis Instruments – Differential Thermal Analyser cum Thermo Gravimetric Analyser (DTA/ TGA ) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) - have been installed on 21.01.09. The system has been procured from M/s. WATERS Ges.m.b.H, Hietzinger, Hauptstrasse 145, A-1130, Vienna, Austria.

The instruments are used for characterizing the thermal properties of the materials developed / synthesized. It is being utilized by all the science departments extensively and 216 samples were analyzed upto 30th June 2009. À Mechanical Shop A precision all geared lathe supplied by M/s. HMT machine tools Ltd., has been commissioned at the Mechanical shop during Feb, ’09. This machinery is useful in the fabrication of mechanical components required for the teaching and research activities of the science departments to a very high accuracy and good finishing.
