“There is overwhelming evidence that if we can allow our canola to safely mature longer in the field, we take a yield advantage to the bin. The number of strategies to mitigate this risk is growing: variety choice, pod shatter technology, desiccation and later swathing, at 60-70% seed colour change, are just a few.” — Darold Niwa, UFA Agronomic Specialist

stanD estaBLisHment

Regardless of the hybrid you choose, stand establishment is key to unlocking your crop’s potential. Thin stands or uneven germination tend to result in different maturity rates, making input application more difficult and raising the possibility of a lower yield. The healthier your crop is from the seedling stage on, the better it can withstand pressures from weather, diseases or insects. The better your crop can overcome challenges, the more likely it is to produce the yield and quality you need. Your UFA Customer Account Manager can help you choose the hybrid best suited for your operation.

Fertility Soil fertility is essential to a good yield. Seed, soil and foliar applied nutrition can all help your crop obtain the nutrition it needs to thrive and make up for any nutrient deficiencies in your soil. It’s a good idea to conduct soil samples on your fields to determine the nutrient makeup of the soil. Your UFA Customer Account Manager can advise on which products will maximize your soil’s fertility and the best way to apply them.

26

UFA Canola Seed Guide 2016

UFA carries a line of proprietary essential nutrients that help your crop develop early, overcome stresses and maximize yield. Amplify™ root development and plant health

Amplify is an innovative seed nutrient dressing formulated to maximize seedling vigour and early root development by addressing the nutrient imbalances in your seed. Amplify combines an NPK-based formulation with a high load of essential micronutrients and metabolic activators to cold-start your canola. The key metabolic triggers are Transit-S Technology and ATP Nutrition’s rooting compounds. Transit-S increases the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and, when combined with proper nutrients and compounds, accelerates root development and overall plant health better than other products in the industry. Amplify is compatible with most seed treatments. Magnify™ root and seedling development

Magnify is formulated to meet the early needs of your canola crop with an NPK base and a high load of essential micronutrients. A properly-timed application of Magnify at herbicide timing will maximize root and seedling development, preventing restricted root systems caused by abiotic and biotic stresses to young plants. It’s designed to be safe on your crop and compatible with most herbicides. Multiply™ plant health and yield

Multiply is the final part of our in-crop foliar nutrient management plan, designed specifically to meet the nutrient demands of your canola seed at the reproductive stage. Multiply combines an innovative NPK-based formulation with a high load of essential micronutrients to maximize nutrient uptake to the leaf and add a “Chemtrition” effect to your existing fungicide program. Radioisotope research shows this formulation increases uptake by 59% and subsequent translocation in the plant by 31% compared to other products. A properly timed application of Multiply with your fungicide capitalizes on this added efficiency to improve the flowering, pollination and seed set of your canola crop, leading to optimal plant health and yield. Multiply is formulated to be safe on your flowering crop and compatible with your fungicide program.

“2015 has provided us with a number of reminders about canola growing practices. In dry conditions, to allow germination, you have to use every tactic to ensure seeds find a nesting spot with moisture. We were also reminded this year of the importance of scouting fields to make sure we don’t lose early true leaves to flea beetle infestations.” — Darold Niwa, UFA Agronomic Specialist

28

UFA Canola Seed Guide 2016

Seeding Seeding is the most important factor in ensuring an optimal plant count and establishing a strong, healthy crop. The easier you can make it for your seedlings to emerge and establish themselves, the further along you’ll be in reaching your yield targets. The objective is to get 7-10 plants per square foot, emerged uniformly. A seeding rate of 5 pounds per acre is generally enough to accomplish this goal. However, you must be aware of the Thousand Kernel Weight (TKW) of your seed to determine your rate – TKW can range from 3 to 7.5 grams, which can result in very different seed coverage. It’s also essential to ensure your seed can access soil moisture. Ideal seeding depth is .5 to 1 inch, depending on the depth of moisture in the soil. It can be tempting to increase seeding speed, especially on larger operations. However, it’s important to keep in mind that seeding faster can result in poorer seed placement and density, which will affect stand establishment.

Field scouting The importance of scouting your fields simply cannot be overstated. From disease to pests to weeds to crop maturity, knowing what’s going on in your fields is absolutely crucial to success. Scout early, scout often, and talk to your UFA Customer Account Manager for advice about any issues that may arise.

Weed control Early weed competition can dramatically affect stand establishment by siphoning off light, moisture and nutrients your crop needs, especially at the early stages. Minimizing weed stress is essential to maximizing yields. Remember, it’s key to follow rates and timing on your herbicide labels. Failure to follow the label can result in damage to your crop, which can in turn affect your yield.

2016 UFA Canola Seed Guide

29

Pests Canola is vulnerable to insect attacks during stand establishment, particularly flea beetles and cutworms. If left uncontrolled, these pests can cause a tremendous amount of damage, resulting in significant losses in yield and quality. Continue to monitor your fields and ensure you are protected with seed treatment options. Flea beetles

There are two main species of flea beetles that feed on canola: the crucifer flea beetle and the striped flea beetle. Field scouting is key to controlling flea beetle infestations. These small but damaging insects are canola’s worst enemy, causing crop damage, reduced yield and quality and vulnerability to disease. Checking populations in the fall helps predict next spring’s level of flea beetle pressure and determines what seed treatment is necessary. Scouting in spring, shortly after emergence, will tell you whether or not you need to apply a foliar insecticide. The industry standard is to spray once 25% damage is observed during early plant development. Cutworms

Cutworms are not as widespread as flea beetles, but can be just as damaging to emerging canola stands. Younger cutworms eat holes and notches in leaves and older larvae eat into plant stems, cutting them off at soil level. Cutworms can be controlled by foliar insecticide applications or you can pre-order your seed with Lumiderm™ or Fortenza® seed treatments at the time of booking. Fields should be scouted often during early plant development. Key signs of cutworm infestation include bare patches, holes and notches in plants and plants that are wilting or cut off. The Canola Council of Canada recommends scouting every three or four days during the first few weeks of development, digging around the edges of bare patches and looking for larvae in the first two to four inches of soil. Cutworms are most active at night, so any scouting or spraying is best done in the evening. Talk to your UFA Customer Account Manager about handling weed issues and minimizing herbicide resistance with UFA’s full spectrum of crop protection products.

Disease manaGement

Blackleg, clubroot and sclerotinia continue to be major threats. Vigilance, sound management practices and disease-resistant hybrids, available from UFA, continue to be the most effective ways to guard against damage and loss of yield.

Blackleg Blackleg, caused by the fungus Leptosphaeria maculans, can result in significant yield losses in susceptible varieties. One of the best ways to control blackleg is to rotate crops, working multiple hybrids into your rotation. Try using new hybrids with builtin multi-genic blackleg resistance technology. It’s also important to scout your fields to evaluate infestation levels. Your UFA Customer Account Manager can help you devise a strategy to combat blackleg and prevent further infection in your fields. Symptoms

Blackleg can cause dry rot or cankers at the base of the stem and lesions on leaves and stems. Leaf spots are white and dotted with small, black bodies that carry spores. Stem cankers are brown, with a darker border. Crop rotation

The Canola Council of Canada recommends a one-in-four-year crop rotation to reduce the risk of blackleg. This allows crop stubble and residue that carries the disease to break down and reduces the risk of the disease overcoming genetic resistance in hybrids. Field scouting

There are three times during the growing season that scouting for blackleg is important: before seeding, to check for signs of blackleg in crop residue; at the 3-to6-leaf stage, to check for lesions; and at swathing, which is the best time to detect stem cankers and the extent of damage inside of the stem. This can help predict the level of infection to be expected next season.

Clubroot First detected near Edmonton in 2003, clubroot has been spreading steadily to more and more fields, at a rate of 20 miles (32 kilometres) per year. A soil-borne disease whose spores can live up to 20 years, and can cause significant yield losses. There is currently no economically viable way to eradicate clubroot from a field once infected. However, by following recommended management and sanitation practices, the spread and effect of clubroot can be minimized. Symptoms

Clubroot causes galls on the roots of infected plants, preventing them from carrying water and nutrients to leaves, stems and pods. Infected plants show firm, white growths on the roots that turn soft and greyish brown as they decay. Plants infected with clubroot show symptoms that include wilting, stunting and yellowing if the infection occurs at the seedling stage, and premature ripening and shriveled seeds if the infection occurs at later crop stages. 2016 UFA Canola Seed Guide

Field scouting

Clubroot symptoms can resemble symptoms from other diseases or environmental stresses, so if clubroot is suspected, plants should be dug up to check for root galls. The best time to do this is in the weeks before swathing, after root galls have had time to form. Management practices

Because clubroot is soil-borne, it’s essential to limit the movement of soil between fields. Try to minimize traffic in and out of fields and clear as much dirt as possible from equipment and vehicles before moving from one field to another. You should also consider growing clubroot-resistant hybrids even if no clubroot has been detected in your fields. Remember to follow current rotation recommendations and work multiple hybrids into your rotation to slow the disease’s ability to overcome genetic resistance. For more information on clubroot-resistant hybrids, refer to the “Hybrids” tab in this guide.

Sclerotinia Sclerotinia is a fungal disease that causes canola stem rot. Sclerotinia infection can result in fewer, smaller seeds, premature ripening, shattered pods and loss of yield during combining. The Canola Council of Canada calls sclerotinia “one of the most destructive diseases of canola.” Symptoms

Crops that are severely infected with sclerotinia frequently lodge, shatter at swathing and are difficult to swath. Infected plants show lesions on leaves, stems and branches. As the lesions expand, plant stems girdle, causing wilting and premature ripening. Stems bleach and whiten and show a white, mouldy growth and hard, black resting bodies called sclerotia when split open. Management

Sclerotinia is best managed with crop rotation and strategically applied fungicide. The spread and severity of sclerotinia can vary greatly from field to field, so it’s important to know what factors are at work in making your fungicide decisions. Timing is key when determining fungicide application – 20-30% bloom is the ideal time for spraying. Your UFA Customer Account Manager will help you develop a strategy to prevent and manage diseases in your fields.

Swathing at the right time is key to maximizing yields. If you swath too early, you may experience lower yields, higher green seed rates and reduced quality.

UFA Canola Seed Guide 2016

Seed colour changes The optimum time to swath canola is when 60% of the seeds across a field show colour change. Seed colour change will usually increase about 10% every 2 to 3 days. Seed colour is the most important factor in determining when to swath. The overall colour of the field and pods does not always indicate how ripe the seeds are. Some hybrids appear ripe on the outside of the pod before the seeds are actually mature. Other factors, such as disease and weather, can cause plants to ripen prematurely. To choose your best timing, split open the pods on the main stem and look at the colour of the seed coats inside. Be sure to check seed colour at multiple locations throughout your crop, as maturity across a field can vary.

Straight cutting Straight cutting your crop can give you more options and help manage your harvest timing. Operational efficiency is increased because you can eliminate the swathing step and go straight to combining. Straight cutting can also increase yield and quality, with less green seed and less pod shattering from swathing.
