hen I tested a Jaguar XF back in June 2008, I was absolutely delighted with what I found. The car was everything I expected a Jaguar to be, smooth, refined, powerful, beautifully built and finished, as well as being an absolute pleasure to drive. It was also modern and up to the highest standards with its technology. Bearing all this in mind I approached the test of this Jaguar XF-S with a considerable degree of enthusiasm.

That 2008 test car was fitted with the original 2.7 litre V6 diesel engine, mated to a six speed manual/automatic gearbox. This latest test car had the same silky smooth six speed automatic/manual gearbox, but with a different final drive ratio and it was powered by the most powerful version of the V6 diesel, now increased in capacity to 3.0 litres. As installed in this car, it delivered 202 kW and a massive 600 Nm of torque. In spite of this increase in power, which naturally gives an even more effortless performance, carbon dioxide exhaust emissions have been reduced. They now stand at 179 gm/km, putting the car into Irish road tax band E, with a current annual tax liability, at present rates, of â‚Ź630.

This top of the range diesel engine, gives the car a top speed electronically governed to 250 kph (155 mph), while its 0-100 kph acceleration time reduces to 6.4 seconds. There are very few places where you can legally exploit that top speed, but it is nice to know that it is there. The acceleration can be used on a daily basis and when you use it, you can feel the magnificent adrenaline rush, as the car literally rockets forwards, smoothly, silently and ever so satisfyingly. According to the EU testing standards, the XF-S as tested does 30 mpg (9.5 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle, 51 mpg (5.5 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle and 42 mpg (6.8 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. The tank was not full when I collected the car and after the first half day’s driving, I was horrified by the amount the fuel contents indicator has retreated towards the empty mark. In subsequent days this same rapid movement towards empty, became a real and worrying concern. The car seemed to be consuming fuel like an alcoholic consumes intoxicating drink. This was supposed to be a diesel, yet its behaviour seemed to be more on the style of a North American huge capacity petrol engine. Once it reached the quarter full mark, the rate of progress towards empty, seemed to slow down considerably. As a result of it not being full at the start and not knowing just how much was left at the end, it is impossible for me to determine accurately, if it can actually deliver 30 mpg (9.9 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle. Using purely guesswork, my estimation for the urban cycle, is closer to 19 mpg (14.8 lt/100 km). For the daily commute, I found myself sticking rigidly to a 60 kph (40 mph) cruising speed. The massive torque provided, meant that for most of the time the engine was running at around 1,200 rpm. Moving off from rest, the gearbox changed down at around 2,000 rpm from 1st to 2nd and thereafter changes were made at about 1,800 rpm or less. The gearbox itself makes the required changes in a silky smooth manner, which makes driving the car extremely effortless and relaxing. contd. on page 6

Being the S specification, this car also had a somewhat firmer suspension. As a result I was more conscious of ripples and other surface irregularities, than I remember in the previous test car. However, it could also be an indication of how much road surfaces have deteriorated in the intervening two and a half years. Overall, however, it was tolerable and I soon adapted to it. I only realised how good it was when I changed to a smaller, less exotic and expensive test model later. The steering was effortless, smooth and direct, with a luxurious feel from the leather covered steering wheel. The test car was equipped with twenty inch diameter, alloy wheels, with substantial 255/35 tyres, providing the sort of grip need by a car with this potential level of performance. Ventilated disc brakes were fitted front and rear, those in the front being 357 mm in diameter, while the
rear set were 328 mm in diameter. Again this is the sort of stopping power needed by a car offering this level of performance. Currently there is a general move away from providing proper spare wheels and tyres. I am well aware of the thinking behind this trend. By eliminating the spare wheel you save weight and gain space. This all helps in the drive to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The Spacesaver spare wheel is a half way stop along this road. The full distance is providing one of those small plug-in air compressors and a bottle of latex foam. However, having been stranded with both these so called solutions, I am completely and utterly against them. If I had to take one or the other, it would be the Spacesaver, but it would only be with grave misgivings. Although fitted with twenty inch diameter road wheels, this Jaguar came with an
eighteen inches diameter, alloy Spacesaver spare wheel. It is so narrow, it looks like a wheel fitted to a car in the first decade of the nineteenth century. I just do not understand how something of this sort can provide the grip needed for a car of the XF-S’s size, weight and reduced performance when fitted with this wheel. What would the steering grip be like on a wet or slippery road, when fitted to a front wheel? If fitted to a rear wheel, what would traction be like on a slippery incline, or braking on a downhill gradient? The test car was finished to Portfolio standards. I loved the light cream seat upholstery, with mottled aluminium and figured Ebony trim. The test car had a charcoal roof lining, which would not be my preferred choice, but unlike some other cars I have encountered with a dark roof lining, it did not depress me. I think the reason is that the XF-S is a large car
with big windows, which let in plenty of light. The light coloured upholstery also helps to make the interior bright and cheerful. I was also pleased to see that good common sense prevailed and that black floor mats and carpets were fitted. Apart from the fact that I would have preferred to eliminate the mottled aluminium in favour of all wood, I had no complaints with the interior finish as provided. I could comfortably live with it as my everyday car. In the modern manner, the XF-S was fitted with a whole range of electronic gizmos and gadgetry. The two front seats have electrical adjustments for reach, height, backrest angle, lumbar support, and side bolsters. There are four electric windows, plus electric adjustment for the two exterior rear view mirrors. Those mirrors automatically fold in when the car is locked and fold out again when unlocked. The steering also adjusts for reach and height electronically. The climate control is a dual zone system. Then there are gadgets for mobile telephones, music connections, satellite navigation and a whole lot more. One of these days all you will have to do, is to sit into the car, tell it where you want to go and it will drive you there automatically! There is a 60/40 split rear bench seat. It has a folding centre armrest with two cupholders. It also has ISOfix fittings in the two outer positions for child safety seats. While it can in theory accommodate three adults abreast, the centre section is harder with marginally less headroom as a result and a third adult will automatically

two large round, analogue dials. The speedometer is on the left, with black lettering on a strip of white background. The rest of the background is black to highlight any red warning lights. The matching instrument on the right is the tachometer. There is a large screen in the centre of the facia, that serves the air conditioning, the audio system and the satellite navigation. Control for all these systems are in the clearly marked switch panel below. In the current Jaguar manner, the large round item in the centre tunnel is the gear selector knob, which folds away flush into the tunnel when the ignition is switched off. Some distance behind it is the electrically operated handbrake. The covered space to the left of the gear selector is an ashtray with a cigarette lighter, while the larger covered space behind that contains two
cupholders. Switches on the horizontal arm of the steering wheel are for the audio system, telephone operations and the cruise control. Standing that bit higher than most family cars, you walk into it, in comfort. You sit up that little bit higher, so you get an excellent view of the road ahead and the scenery all around. On the ferry crossing from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead, our parking position on the car deck, was just opposite one of the passenger access doors. On arrival at Holyhead, I was surprised to find a large crowd of motorists standing all around and admiring it. The questions many of them asked me, obviously indicated they were tremendously impressed with the car. I certainly am impressed and would love to have one as my daily, family transport.

Renault scores a hat trick! Preliminary figures from the Motorcheck.ie Car Index show that French Auto Manufacturer Renault are on the verge of scoring a hat trick in the Irish market. Figures for October indicate that Renault will be the number one selling manufacturer for the month. With 916 registrations recorded to date, a massive 465 ahead of Toyota with 403 registrations, it's very possible that the manufacturer will break the 1,000 threshold. Something that hasn't been done since March of this year. The Motorcheck.ie statistics show that Renault is currently dominating the Top 10 Model list with an unprecedented First, Second and Third place finish guaranteed. The Renault Fluence is currently placed at number one with 328 registrations, the Megane currently occupies second place with 275 units and the Clio follows closely in third position with 271. Fourth place goes to Volkswagen with 153 registrations for its popular Golf model. Commenting on the results Motorcheck.ie Director Shane Teskey said “Renault started 2010 with a strategy aimed squarely at volume sales. They introduced competitive pricing across the entire range and were the first to introduce a market leading scrappage offer. This ‘value for money’ approach coupled with a desirable range of new models is working well for the company and I wouldn't be surprised if Renault ended up being the best selling manufacturer for 2010”. Whilst the current statistics for October indicate that the month will show a significant percentage increase on 2009 (70+%), Motorcheck.ie does not expect the overall total for the year to exceed 100,000. Now preparing for 2011 members of the motor industry is calling on the Government to extend the hugely successful scrappage scheme that it claims has saved thousands of jobs and created an additional 74 million for the exchequer.

Last year the Continental Irish Car of the Year title went to the Peugeot 3008 while the van accolade was won by the Ford Transit Connect.

he Ford Ranger pick-up also made its international debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. In keeping with the “One Ford” strategy, the new Ranger will be built in three plants around the world; Rayong Thailand, as well as in South Africa and Argentina. It is not expected on European markets before 2012. Buyers will be offered the choice of three cab designs; single cab, extended

cab and four door double cab. There will also be the option of both two wheel drive and four wheel drive. Ford are offering the choice of two diesel engines, a revised version of the current 2.2 litre unit or a new 3.2 litre motor. The 2.2 litre delivers 110 kW with 375 Nm, while the 3.2 litre manages 147 kW and 470 Nm. Both come with the choice of six speed manual or six speed automatic transmissions. All

models come as standard with an electronic stability programme, that includes traction control, yaw control and roll-over mitigation, with trailer sway mitigation. Other useful features are a rear park assist, with a rear view camera. Below the skin this new Ford Ranger probably shares a lot in common with the Mazda BT-50 pick-up. 350 Nm between 1,800 and 2,400 rpm. This gives a top speed of 201 kph (124 mph), with a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 9.6 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 46 mpg (6.1 lt/100 km). The variable vane turbocharger has ceramic vanes, allowing higher temperatures to be accommodated without difficulty. In the modern
manner it uses high pressure direct fuel injection and meets Euro 5 regulations. Exterior recognition features are the more upright grille, elongated headlamps and front fog lamps mounted low down in the front spoiler. Towards the rear the C-pillar is now body coloured. The side windows are framed by a
chrome strip. Inside there is a ten way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat and four way electric adjustment of the front passenger seat. Leather upholstery is standard. The additional length gives a normal luggage capacity of 0.526 cubic metres when all five seats are in use. The

comprehensive list of standard equipment includes front and rear electric windows, tilt and slide glass sun-roof, heated front seats, cruise control, automatic headlamps and wipers and an electric handbrake. The audio equipment includes a Bluetooth telephone facility plus MP3 compatibility.
The braking system includes anti-lock, with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist. It works in conjunction with the vehicle dynamic stability control system that includes traction control and hill start assist. The car rides on seventeen inch diameter alloy wheels.

KIA POP he Pop is Kia’s concept of a three seater, zero emissions, city car. Power is provided by a 50 kW/190 Nm electric traction motor, drawing its energy from a Lithium polymer gel battery. The Lithium polymer gel

battery has the same power characteristics as a Lithiumion battery, but with a 29% reduction in size. In a small car like the Kia Pop this is obviously a huge advantage. The Pop’s battery provides 18 kW/hour. This gives the Pop a top speed of 140 kph (86
mph) with a range of 160 km (99 miles). Using a conventiona 230v supply, recharging takes six hours, but with a high voltage quick charge it requires thirty minutes. Built on a wheelbase of 2055 mm, the Pop is 3000 mm long in overall length, stands 1490 mm high and has a width, excluding the exterior rear view mirrors, of 1740 mm. It is thus very similar in size to Toyota’s iQ. As a purely city car, its advantage is that it is completely emissions free, as far as its motive power is concerned.
