CAR & VAN OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED T
he Volkswagen Crafter has been voted Continental Irish Van of the Year 2012 by the Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA). The announcement which was made recently at an awards ceremony at the Convention Centre Dublin was attended by leading figures from the motor industry. The Crafter, with 44 points, finished ahead of the Fiat Ducato EU5 on 38 points and the Fiat Doblo Workup on 29 points. In determining the result, all nine voting members of the IMWA van jury cast their votes. Value-for-money, reliability, versatility and lasting residual value were among the attributes sought by the judging panel. Presenting the award to Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Ireland, Paddy Murphy of award sponsors, Continental Tyres Ireland, commented: “The VW Crafter is a worthy winner of the Irish Van of the Year title, ideally suited to the needs of Ireland’s commercial vehicle operators. In the current tough market conditions for commercial vehicles, we are sure that the award will contribute in no small way to the ongoing success of the Crafter.' The Crafter succeeds the Mercedes Benz Vito, last year's winner.
At the same ceremony the Kia Rio was voted Continental Irish Car of the Year 2012 and marks the first time that a Korean car brand has taken the title in the 35-year history of the awards.
The results were as follows: 1st Kia Rio 181 points 2nd Ford Focus 176 points 3rd Peugeot 508 165 points The IMWA judges awarded points on the basis of criteria ranging from innovation and safety to space, comfort, build quality, driving quality and value for money. Presenting the award to James Brooks, Managing Director of Kia Ireland, Paddy Murphy commented: “From a great crop of entrants for this year’s award, the Irish motoring writers have selected an exciting model to carry the 2012 title and no doubt the Continental Irish Car of the Year accolade will provide a great badge of honour for the Kia Rio to help it in the competitive Irish market next year. The Rio’s victory is a measure of the progress which Korean manufacturers have made on the car market in a very short time.” Awards were made in five categories, reflecting the diversified nature of today’s car market in Ireland.

Stylish, spacious, comfortable, practical family car he Skoda Octavia Scout is a stylish, spacious, comfortable, practical family car, that is also a pleasure to drive. Urban cycle fuel consumption is 38 mpg (7.4 lt/100 km), stretching to 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle. This gives a Combined cycle average of 50 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km). This level of consumption gives exhaust emissions of 148 gm/km, placing the car in the upper limits of Irish road tax band C, with a current annual demand of â‚Ź302. This surprised me, as with the high gearing, I spent a lot of my driving
with between 1,000 rpm and 1,500 rpm on the tachometer, which can lead to stalling if you slow down for other traffic, then try to accelerate again, without changing down. To avoid this in urban traffic you may spend a lot of the time in second or third gear, especially if you keep in mind the fact that maximum torque is delivered at 1,750 rpm. Out on the open road, the top speed of 204 kph (126 mph) is far more than the legal

maximum, so you can cruise along in comfort with plenty of power to spare. Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes 9.8 seconds, which gives a very sporty level of performance for urban conditions, especially a stop lights grand prix, helped by the extra grip offered by all four wheels transmitting power to the road. point of view, the Scout offers a massive 0.605 cubic metres of luggage space under the roll-up tonneau cover. For those occasional times when extra space is required, with the tonneau cover removed and the rear seats folded into a vertical position behind the two front seats, loading to the roof you have 1.655 cubic metres of space at your disposal. Longitudinal roof rails come as standard, so with a suitable roof box fitted, you can carry up to 75 kg on the roof. If towing is a requirement the Octavia Scout can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1600 kg in weight, or unbraked trailers of 650 kg. The tonneau cover works very smoothly. To roll it back, you
simply press down lightly on the handle and it slides back. You then simply pull forwards to restore it to its original position. To provide maximum luggage space it lifts out easily. The good news from a towing point of view, is that there is a full size spare wheel, albeit of 16” diameter, rather than the 17” of the normal road wheels. The instruments and driving controls are laid out for convenience and ease of
use. The large instrument on the left in the binnacle is the tachometer. It is easy to see. My only criticism is that it is perhaps too detailed with markings for every 100 rpm and figures for every 500 rpm. The needle is currently pointing to 800 rpm in the picture above. Thus for 1,750 rpm the needle would be up near a 10/11 o’clock position on the instrument face. From 5,000 rpm upwards, the markings are in red. The smaller indicator in the lower section is the engine temperature gauge. The matching large instrument on the right is the speedometer, with the fuel gauge in its lower section. The clear digital panel between the two shows a variety of information, like the time, an open door, outside air temperature, trip and total distance recorders, current
fuel consumption, distance to empty and similar useful information. In the top centre of the facia, above the two air vents, there is a very useful covered storage box. The switch for the hazard flashers is between the two air vents. The radio/CD is below the two vents and the large screen also serves the satellite navigation when that is operational. The heating/ventilating controls are below the audio unit. There is another small covered storage space at the bottom of the stack, ahead of the gearlever. Controls for the heated, electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors are on the driver’s door, adjacent to the right hand ventilation outlet. Switches for the four electric windows are in the driver’s door armrest. The leather covered steering wheel has a comfortable, high quality feel and is geared to give three turns from lock to lock. The steering itself is electrically power assisted and it has a light yet positive feel at all speeds. The upper horizontal arms of the steering wheel have additional controls for the audio system on the left and the Bluetooth mobile telephone facilities on the right. A circular switch on the right hand side of the facia, close to the driver’s door, controls the lights and fog lamps. In the normal manner, the left hand stalk under the steering wheel operates the direction indicators and main/high beams. A matching stalk on the right hand side operates the wipers and washers. ROAD TEST By KEVIN FENIX www.twincam.ie ver the years I have been a great admirer of Ford cars, although this admiration has varied from time to time. This latest Mondeo Estate has ticked all my boxes and I thoroughly admired and enjoyed driving it. In my view, if you are a family man with just three children, it makes the perfect family car. It is spacious and comfortable. It is adaptable and versatile. It has a more than satisfactory performance. It has a frugal fuel consumption and above all, it is a pleasure to drive. What more could one ask for in a family car? I do realise, of course, that initial purchase price is a deciding factor for many people, when it comes to buying a new car, especially for families and even more so in these difficult economic times, but if your finances can stretch to it, I believe that it is a very good choice.

Once you have overcome the initial cost of acquisition, its operating costs are very reasonable. With exhaust emissions of just 139 gm/km, it falls into Irish road tax band B, with an annual levy, at present rates of â‚Ź156. Its 2.0 litre, turbocharged, diesel engine can deliver a top speed of 205 kph (127 mph) which is well above most national speed limits. Zero to 100 kph acceleration takes just
9.8 seconds, so you should never be embarrassed in a stop lights grand prix. According to EU testing standards it manages 44 mpg (6.4 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, stretching to 61 mpg (4.6 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging 53 mpg (5.3 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. That is pretty impressive for a car of its size, adaptability and performance.
As far as versatility and adaptability is concerned, it will carry five adults in comfort with 0.489 cubic metres of luggage space. If only two people are travelling and the rear seats are folded, you have 1.680 cubic metres of space at your disposal. If even more space is needed, you can fit a suitable roofbox. The estate comes as standard with roof rails, so you just need the roofbox with
suitable cross mounts. This version can carry up to 75 kg on the roof. Finally if towing is a requirement, it can tow unbraked trailers of up to 750 kg in weight, or braked trailers/caravans of up to 1800 kg in weight. instrument binnacle, contains two large round analogue dials with a rectangular digital information panel between them. The large round dial on the left is the tachometer. It has a black background, with easy to see white lettering. From 4,400 rpm to 6,000 rpm the markings are in a bright red. Matching the tachometer, the large round dial on the
right is the speedometer. It too has a black background with easy to read white lettering. The background is also used as a base for a selection of warning lights, which illuminate in red. The digital information panel has a basically light red background with darker red lettering and although it is basically red on red, the information so displayed is easy to see. It can be programmed to show a
wide variety of information, like the trip and total distance recorders, time, door open, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and a whole lot more. Above this digital panel there are two smaller gauges, with black backgrounds, white lettering and red needles, for the engine temperature gauge (left) and fuel level gauge (right). The spokes of the steering wheel have switches for the cruise control, mobile telephone and audio associated items, as well as the selector for the digital information screen. At the top of the centre console, under the two air vents, there are buttons for demisting the windscreen and rear window, hazard warning flashers and the parking assist unit. The audio system panel is immediately below and below the audio panel there are the controls for the heating, ventilating and dual range climate control systems. Buttons for the four
electric windows and the controls for the electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors are in the driver’s door armrest. Below the air conditioning panel there is a covered space housing a removable ashtray and a cigarette lighter. Behind the gearlever, there is a small, shallow open storage space, with two open cupholders behind it. The armrest between the two front seats has a covered storage tray at the top, with a larger storage box below. The ride and roadholding is comfortable, even over our third world quality road surfaces, However, if you do happen to encounter an Afghanistan size bomb crater of a pothole, you will feel an uncomfortable jolt at the least, if it doesn’t destroy your tyre and wreck your suspension. The power assisted rack and pinion steering is geared to give 2.75 turns from lock to lock. It has a comfortable and precise action at all times. The wheel itself is leather covered and has a soft, high quality feel, which greatly contributes to the overall driving pleasure. It is both reach and height adjustable. The six speed manual gearbox has a smooth and precise operation. You do need to give the gearlever a firm push over to the left, before starting off, to ensure it has selected first and not slipped into third. The brakes always provided a reassuring action when needed, enabling the driver to remain relaxed and confident. Both front seats are comfortable and well shaped. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The rear bench seat is divided 60/40 in both the backrest and seat

New Passat CC Launched at the Los Angeles Motor Show recently, the new Volkswagen Passat CC is due to arrive on the Irish market in March 2012. Power will be provided by the 2.0 TDCi diesel with Blue Motion technology, in two levels of output, 104 kW and 125 kW. Both versions have emissions allowing them to fall into Irish road tax band B. A six speed manual is the standard transmission with both engines, but in addition the 125 kW version will offer the option of an automatic/manual seven speed DSG gearbox. The 125 kW model has an XDS differential as standard. The XDS differential provides a cross action traction control. Bi-xenon headlamps are standard, with LED lighting used for the tail lights and number plate illumination. The rear VW logo serves as the boot opening device and may also be used to house the optional reversing camera.
To celebrate the centenary of Ford of Britain in 2011, the company is exploring its photo archive to reveal rarely seen images. For several decades Ford vehicles have been a favourite of the UK's emergency services. “Bobbies” could regularly be seen patrolling local villages in sky-blue Ford Anglias, with iconic white doors, as commonly seen in the popular 1960s television programme, Heartbeat. The Ford Anglia 105E was notably famous for its overhead valve engine and long gearing, which anticipated the opening of Britain's major new motorways, the M1 and M6 in the early 1960s. This fantastic small Ford sold more than one million units between its debut at the Earls Court motor show in 1959 and its demise in 1967. It was offered in saloon and estate body styles. Launched at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the new Ford Escape will be launched as the Ford Kuga at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. Possibly because of its dual market potential, two different names were selected. The Escape may use larger more petrol orientated engines, to cater for American demands, while the Kuga will offer smaller petrol and diesel units more suited to the demands of its European customers.

provided to give a level extension to the luggage floor. Kneeroom is good for even taller adults sitting in the rear seats. All seats, both front and rear have adjustable head restraints and lap and shoulder seat belts. The centre section of both the rear seat cushion and backrest tends to be firmer and flatter than the positions on either side. While this does naturally reduce comfort somewhat it is not too drastic. The main difficulty an adult may find in this position, is the extension of the centre
tunnel into this area. It is tolerable for shorter journeys. The test car had three very worthwhile optional extras. These are a full size spare wheel, which adds €50 to the price, daytime running lights which add €185 and exterior rear view mirrors that fold in automatically when the ignition is switched off. The folding mirrors add €105 to the price. If you can afford the extra cost of these items I would certainly recommend them. The daytime running lights may seem expensive, but they are very useful, especially in winter
conditions, when lighting conditions can vary from mile to mile. Normal servicing is recommended at intervals of 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or every two years. The normal warranty covers two years with unlimited mileage, plus two years roadside assistance, two years for paintwork defects and twelve years for anti-perforation. This relates to rusting of the bodywork from the inside. At the moment for orders taken now for delivery in January 2012, Ford are offering a four years warranty.

New Avis ‘ArtCar’ competition to revolutionize car design as we know it! Avis Ireland has teamed up with Nissan Ireland, fashion stylist and journalist, Angela Scanlon and broadcaster and self-confessed motor enthusiast Anton Savage to call on the public to design a unique car wrap design for one of Avis’ funky Nissan Jukes. The winning design will win a prize of €3,000 and the opportunity of either a brand new iPad 2 or a one-month placement in the graphic design department of H+A Marketing + PR, one of Ireland’s leading communication agencies. Entry to the competition is via www.facebook.com/avisireland and open until the 30th January 2011. Design entries will be judged on originality, artistic ability and interpretation of the creative brief which is asking that the design communicates the theme ‘Freedom From Limitation’.
