This past year at The Public not only provided a season of excellent theater, it also powerfully affirmed our values.

The Public Theater is Artist Driven, Fundamentally Democratic, and Radically Inclusive.

We are proud to have presented a year of work that not only embraced these values, but that dynamically and dramatically enacted them.

Our extraordinary line-up of artists gave us a season of stories as diverse as our city: from Robert O’Hara’s blisteringly funny examination of race, fame, and the relative value of truth in BARBECUE; to Michael John LaChiusa’s gorgeous illumination of complicated lives in FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE; to Gob Squad’s meditation on age and aging in BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES; to Stew and Heidi Rodewald’s raucous, blues and rock soaked family drama THE TOTAL BENT; to Tarell Alvin McCraney’s anguished retelling of the Book of Job, HEAD OF PASSES. It was a season that not only debuted the astounding new voice of Sarah Burgess and her sharp-as-knives play DRY POWDER, it also debuted a new play by the masterful Richard Nelson, HUNGRY, that began a three play cycle following the Gabriel family through this election year.

At The Public, valuing democracy means more than tracking an election. It means spending another season at the Park welcoming over 100,000 people to see Phyllida Lloyd’s powerful all-female THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, and Dan Sullivan’s muscular TROILUS AND CRESSIDA, for FREE. It means presenting works like PRIVACY that allowed audiences to grapple with and participate in the worldwide discussion on the role of technology in our lives.

And most poignantly of all, it means presenting a Public Forum celebration of World Refugee Day in partnership with the International Rescue Committee. On that day at The Delacorte, as we watched 19 new Americans receive their citizenship, we were reminded that The Public has always been and will always be of, by and for the people.

And we never stop investing in that idea, never stop trying to be more and more radically inclusive. The Public’s production of SOUTHERN COMFORT came at the same time that our entire organization was working to become better allies to the transgender community and to make our spaces more inclusive and welcoming for all people. Our productions of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS and ROMEO & JULIET embodied The Mobile Unit’s work with prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers throughout our region.

And when 200 New Yorkers took the stage at The Delacorte in the Public Works production of THE ODYSSEY, we didn’t just celebrate another year of deep, profound partnership with service organizations throughout the city.

We also celebrated a revived sense of community, where the boundaries between us fell apart, and were reminded what it is like to be one public.

We believe that theater is not a commodity, it’s a set of relationships – and none of our work would be possible without the deep relationships across our community: from the unwavering commitment of partners like The LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust to the individual support of each of our members.

Barbecue The Public Theater welcomed Robert O’Hara back to our theater with his new play BARBECUE. O’Hara has had a long history with The Public going back to 1996 when he directed his play INSURRECTION: HOLDING HISTORY in the LuEsther Theater.

ECLIPSED became the first play on Broadway with an all-black and female cast and creative team when it premiered on March 2016 at the John Golden Theatre.

SOUTHERN COMFORT stirred up many conversations not only in our audiences, but also in our institution at large in regards to gender inclusivity. This summer, The Public Theater partnered with the New York Public Library’s Community Oral History Project to record stories from the Shakespeare in the Park line. As regulars will tell you, waiting in line at the Delacorte is a truly unique New York experience available to locals and visitors alike all summer, every summer.

The Billy Rose Theater Collection of the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts is the permanent home to The Public Theater archives, preserving our story for generations. The idea of a free and public cultural space, so germane to the history of

NYPL, is also at the heart of Shakespeare in the Park. In the last 50 years, over 5 million people from all over the world have watched stories unfold on the Delacorte stage in Central Park. We are delighted to now include our audience members’ stories in the ongoing legacy of Shakespeare in the Park.

These audience stories will be shared on the New York Public Library’s Community Oral History Project website and archived permanently in the Library’s Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy research collection.

What should we know?

With the launch of ACTivate, Public Works has successfully created a new performance opportunity for Community Ensemble members to apply the skills they gained through participating in classes, affinity groups, and summer pageants to the generation, creation, and performance of a world premiere piece of theater.

What can we expect?

In 2017, after two years of collaboration, our national partners, Dallas Theater Center/ SMU and Seattle Repertory Theater will take Public Works’s methodology and pageants and officially launch Public Works Dallas and Public Works Seattle.

MONDAY, MARCH 7 At a moment when questions of gender identity and representation rose to the forefront of national discourse, The Public gathered as a community to ask: How can we – both The Public and the theater field at large – be better allies to the transgender community? The town hall style event was an open discussion with audiences, and a panel of artists and activists including: The Public Theater’s Director of Special Artistic Projects Stephanie Ybarra; author and performance artist Kate Bornstein; Creative Director of ArtsEmerson and Director of HowlRound Polly Carl; founder of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund Michael Silverman; and transgender artist and activist Cecilia Gentili.

Welcome Home: A Celebration Of World Refugee Day

MONDAY, JUNE 20 A PARTNERSHIP WITH INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE As of 2015, over 60 million people across the planet are currently displaced from their homes – more than at any time previously in history. To draw attention to the crisis and to confirm New York City’s place as America’s open arms to those fleeing their homes for a better life, The Public Theater and the International Rescue Committee came together at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park to commemorate World Refugee Day. The night began with a moving ceremony that included Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson swearing in 19 new American citizens from 12 different countries. The celebrations continued with performances from actors and musicians including a performance by rapper K’naan, who came to New York after escaping wartorn Somalia.

This was the year of Mx Justin Vivian Bond, who celebrated their 25th Anniversary of Cabaret at Joe’s Pub. In just the last decade, Mx Bond has performed approximately 120 times - under 20 different show titles – in addition to the long-awaited reunion run of the wildly beloved septuagenarian cabaret duo Kiki & Herb, with Kenny Mellman, for 21 sold-out performances and a private taping.

New York Voices is the artist commissioning program of Joe’s Pub at The Public. As part of The Public’s long history of cultivating the country’s most celebrated artists, the program supports the creation of new works by critically-acclaimed musicians and performers.

What should we know?

In 2015-2016, the Pub launched Joe’s Pub Houston, the venue’s first-ever performance series outside of New York City, with local performing arts producers Lott Entertainment. Additionally, Joe’s Pub continued an annual partnership with Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center that served as an incubator for artists and collaborators to create and develop innovative new musical theater projects and music.

What can we expect?

This year will see both Houston and Philadelphia programs continuing as well as another new performance series, called Joe’s Pub Seattle, with the city’s spiegeltent, Teatro ZinZanni.

This series highlighted the multidisciplinary music/theater hybrids emerging from this venue’s trendsetting programming.

These artists are reengineering storytelling in this intimate space in a way that expands the audience and definition of theater.

Last season, The PubIic Theater’s Devised Theater Initiative (DTI) hosted the second cohort of the Devised Theater Working Group, which offers theater-makers a supportive framework in which to develop their work, engage in consistent dialogue, and be challenged by each other’s aesthetic practice. These artists were presented as part of the 2016 Under The Radar Festival’s INCOMING! Series, a platform that features in-process works of formal investigation and artistic ambition.

What should we know?

We invited two members of our inaugural Devised Theater Working Group to present in the Under the Radar Festival.

The wildly popular Darkmatter performed #ITGETSBITTER in Joe’s Pub and Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble converted the Anspacher into a Luv Den, complete with floor pillows and mylar runways.

What can we expect?

In January 2017, we will premiere the first show developed through the Devised Theater Initiative for the Under the Radar Festival. THE FEVER is a new work by 600 HIGHWAYMEN, the Obie award-winning company whose previous UTR shows were hailed by the New York Times as “sublime” and “original and affecting.”

This ambitious piece has been developed in residence at The Public, and through research residencies at Arizona State University and The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

PUBLIC STUDIO is a performance series dedicated exclusively to developing the work of emerging writers. In a laboratory environment, writers will be in rehearsal with actors and a director, incorporate bare bones design elements, and open the process to an audience over a series of performances.

More than a reading or workshop, but not a full production, this middle step affords early career writers the important opportunity to deepen their experience of working collaboratively over an extended rehearsal period and to see their work staged in front of an audience.
