Our Master Writer Chair, Suzan-Lori Parks, produced a masterpiece: FATHER COMES HOME FROM THE WARS (PARTS 1, 2 & 3). This astounding play not only expressed Suzan-Lori’s genius, it demonstrated the immense artistic benefits that flow from giving a playwright a permanent staff position.

Joe’s Pub produced the most successful and exciting “cross-over” show we have yet done, Bridget Everett’s bawdy and brilliant ROCK BOTTOM. Lear deBessonet’s thrilling Public Works program began a massive national expansion, with affiliate programs taking root in Dallas, Seattle and Detroit, and more on the way.

Young Jean Lee, who originally came to us through the Devised Theater Initiative, created her provocative and edgy STRAIGHT WHITE MEN in the Martinson.

All of these extraordinary women were joined by Cush Jumbo, Phyllida Lloyd, Anne Kaufmann, Tracey Scott Wilson, Anne Hathaway, Julie Taymor and the amazing, Tony Award-winning women of Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron’s FUN HOME on Broadway to create one of the most female-centered seasons in our history.

Meanwhile, the Music Theater Initiative led to the moving FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, Michael Friedman and Itamar Moses’ breathtaking musical. The Mobile Unit doubled in size, taking Shakespeare to our most marginalized citizens. “Free” came downtown, with Free First Previews founding a tradition of making our downtown shows as radically accessible as Free Shakespeare in the Park.

And, of course, there was HAMILTON. Already one of the great successes in American theater history, Lin-Manuel’s brilliant show embodies everything The Public stands for: inclusion, democracy, diversity, excellence.

And our supporters have rallied around us. From the unwavering commitment of The LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust to record growth in our member base, our community has been profoundly generous, and made all this work possible.

A year at The Public is as all-encompassing, as eclectic, as contradictory, as inclusive as the city of New York. The journey of FATHER COMES HOME began in 2008 when Suzan-Lori Parks was selected as our Master Writer Chair. This full-time staff position gave her the opportunity to work consistently on the play, staged two Public Lab productions (2009 and 2014), and finally premiere the fully-realized production, deemed by the New York Times “THE BEST NEW PLAY OF THE YEAR.”

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK The Public continued our 53-year summer tradition of Free Shakespeare in the Park, bringing free theater to more than 100,000 audience members. Since 1962, over five million people have enjoyed more than 150 free productions of Shakespeare and other classical works and musicals at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park through our flagship program.

The Mobile Unit doubled its impact this year with two tours, presenting critically acclaimed free Shakespeare to prisons, shelters, and other community venues in all five boroughs.

In addition to a three-week tour, each Mobile Unit production then “sits down” at The Public Theater downtown, providing New York audiences with access to worldclass Shakespeare.

This season, the two tours –PERICLES and MACBETH—visited 23 venues in NYC and New Jersey.

PUBLIC WORKS seeks to engage the people of New York in making theater that is not only for the people, but by and of the people as well. Working deeply with five partner organizations representing each borough, Public Works invites members of diverse communities to participate in workshops, take classes, attend performances at The Public, and, most importantly, to join in the creation of an annual pageant production that is free to the people of the city of New York at the Delacorte.

We saw 23 shows at The Public with new audience members as part of the Ambassador Program.

While FUN HOME prepared to open on Broadway and FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE played in the Newman Theater, authors Alison Bechdel (Fun Home, Are You My Mother?) and Jonathan Lethem (The Fortress of Solitude, Dissident Gardens) came together to discuss storytelling, graphic novels, and what it’s like to see their lives turned into musicals.

El Teatro Campesino founder Luis Valdez and a cast of major Latino talents and thinkers joined Public Forum to discuss whether art can change social policy. This Forum celebrated the 50th anniversary of the company’s founding on the front lines of the Delano Grape Strike in 1965.

Our relationships throughout the artistic community are lifelong and the bedrock of the work we produce each year. From reading a first script to fully realized productions, this is a snapshot of our new play development activities over the past 12 months.
