Turning Special Ed on Its Head
Policies are not just pieces of paper in a dusty binder on the school leader’s shelf, rarely reviewed and hastily passed. Policy work, including development and implementation, is often seen as routine and in most cases, an agenda item at the monthly board meeting to get through as quickly as possible. However, charter school policies should be included in the charter school family, fed data, and “cared for” so that policy complements culture and compliance. Policies are the organization’s touchstone for operations and legal compliance – globally and with the school’s authorizer. Participants will learn that active board involvement is necessary to shape policy and how policy development can engage not only an administration but also stakeholders, including parents, employees, and authorizers.
