Source: Prepared by the author, on the basis of data from the National Classification Commission (concla)-Brazilian Geographical and Statistical Institute (ibge). a Versions 1.0 and 2.0 of the National Classification of Economic Activities (cnae) were harmonized based on data from the National Classification Commission (concla) of the Brazilian Geographical and Statistical Institute (ibge) for the purpose of extending the comparison to the entire period of analysis. Harmonization of the two versions is necessary inasmuch as data are taken from the Annual Survey of Industry-Enterprise and the Annual Survey of Industry-Product, both prepared by ibge, which were published at different times: the first between 1996 and 2007, in the framework of cnae 1.0, and the second between 2007 and 2012, in the framework of cnae 2.0. For the analysis, data on foreign trade were also collected from the Centre for Foreign Trade Studies Foundation (funcex) and AliceWeb of the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (mdic). In this case, the harmonization was based on the mercosur Common Nomenclature (mcn), which is the classification used by the mdic for trade data. b Versions 1.0 and 2.0 of the cnae do not necessarily yield the same results, as some of the products in one classification are not included in the harmonized group of the other classification.
