Some standards are supported by other documents which provide further information and are very useful if not essential in using the standard itself. For ISO14001, no such documents are recommended here. However we would suggest that you may like to refer to ISO14004 as it provides further guidance on the interpretation and implementation of many of the requirements in ISO14001. There are no requirements to be met in this section.

A total of thirty-three definitions of key terms are given, broken down into different subject areas, although many are quite frankly not that helpful in working out what you actually need to do to comply with the requirements of ISO14001. There are no requirements to be met in this section.

EMS Context, Requirements and Scope

This section is about understanding as much as possible about the organization itself and the environment in which it operates. The key point about the EMS is that it should be appropriate and relevant to the specifics of the business it is being applied to. To ensure this, the people implementing and running the EMS must be able to answer questions about what the organization does, where, how and who for (plus many others). The EMS will also be affected by the situation within the organization (internal issues) and outside the organization (external issues). Internal issues are factors such as the culture, management
