Après le succès foudroyant de leur album Perfecto et surtout, de la chanson Coton ouaté, Bleu Jeans Bleu nous revient avec un quatrième opus tout aussi déjanté que le précédent. Pour nous en parler, nous avons rencontré Mathieu Lafontaine alias Claude Cobra, le chanteur et compositeur du groupe.
After the resounding success of their album Perfecto, and the song Coton ouaté in particular, Bleu Jeans Bleu is back with a fourth opus that’s just as wacky as the last. We asked Mathieu Lafontaine, alias Claude Cobra, the group’s singer and composer, to tell us all about it.
ÉTANT DONNÉ LE SUCCÈS DU DERNIER ALBUM, LA PRESSION ÉTAIT-ELLE FORTE POUR CELUI-CI?
GIVEN HOW SUCCESSFUL YOUR LAST ALBUM WAS, WERE YOU UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE FOR THIS ONE?
Je préfère utiliser le mot opportunité plutôt que pression. C’est un privilège d’avoir un public établi et on a travaillé en sachant qu’il nous attendait. C’était une motivation de plus.
I prefer to use the word opportunity rather than pressure. It’s a privilege to have an established audience and we worked with the knowledge that they were waiting for us. It was extra motivation.

IN THIS NEW ALBUM, WE RECOGNIZE YOUR UNIQUE SIGNATURE: ABSURD LYRICS, GOOD HUMOR AND CATCHY CHORUSES … IS TOP MINOU A SUCCESSOR TO PERFECTO?
Oui, c’est la suite logique de Perfecto. Par contre, on y retrouve l’énergie d’un concert live, même si nous avons enregistré en studio. On a en effet arrêté la tournée pendant neuf mois pour faire l’album, et, quand on a commencé à jouer ensemble, toute l’énergie qu’on met d’habitude sur scène s’est retrouvée sur l’album.
PLUSIEURS CHANSONS ÉVOQUENT DES SITUATIONS COCASSES DU QUOTIDIEN, COMME BACON EN BEDAINE, QUI PARLE DE QUELQU’UN EN TRAIN DE FAIRE CUIRE DU BACON LE TORSE NU. LA VIE DE TOUS LES JOURS EST-ELLE VOTRE SOURCE D’INSPIRATION? Mes idées viennent toujours de tournures de phrases que j’entends autour de moi. Ces mots-là sont le point de départ des chansons. L’inspiration vient des petites choses imagées. Par exemple, dans Souper fondue, je ne parle pas de la fondue en tant que telle, mais d’un couple qui veut raviver la flamme. Dans cette tranche de vie, tout le monde peut se retrouver. Ce n’est pas parce que la chanson est simple qu’elle n’est pas intéressante. 30
Yes, it’s the logical continuation of Perfecto. However, it also contains the energy of a live concert, even though we recorded it in the studio. We stopped touring for nine months to make the album, and when we started to play together all the energy that we usually exude on stage found itself on the album.
SEVERAL OF THE SONGS EVOKE RIDICULOUS SITUATIONS IN DAILY LIFE, LIKE BACON EN BEDAINE (“BACON ON THE BELLY”), WHICH TALKS ABOUT SOMEONE WHO’S COOKING BACON WITHOUT A SHIRT ON. IS EVERYDAY LIFE YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION? My ideas always come from turns of phrase that I hear around me. These words are the starting point for my songs. Inspiration comes from little things that create images. For example, in Souper fondue (“fondue supper”), I’m not talking about fondue as such but about a couple who want to rekindle the flame. Everyone can recognize themselves in this slice of life. Just because a song is simple doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting.
