Jewish retiree creates stir defending Pope Pius By FRANK ELTMAN ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- A retired Jewish businessman from Long Island finds himself in the middle of a decades-long debate over whether Pope Pius XII could have done more to save the Jews from the Holocaust. Long Beach's Gary Krupp contends that criticism of the pope's actions during World War II are unwarranted. He says the Catholic leader worked behind the scenes to save Jews from Hitler's wrath. Krupp runs the Pave the Way Foundation, which attempts to foster understanding among religions. Its Web site features many of the documents Krupp uses to support his arguments, and he has published a book on the topic. Scholars who deride Krupp's contention that "a crime has been committed against this man" say more research is needed before sainthood for Pius XII can be approved.
