Dear Community Members,

The Family Caregiver Resource Guide is an essential tool for Santa Fe seniors and families who are caring for or supporting loved ones. So much more than a simple directory, this guide can connect you to the organizations and individuals, both at the City of Santa Fe and in the community, who are working to address the unique issues and challenges presented by aging.

Santa Fe is one family, one community, and as our friends and family members grow older, it should never mean that they are excluded from our civic life. We’re going the extra mile to guarantee that as Santa Feans grow older they hold on to their freedom and dignity, whether they choose to age in place, enter a residential senior home, or live with a family member.

2

If you don’t find what you need here, or even if you do, but want or need a little extra help navigating the waters of aging in Santa Fe, our dedicated Senior Services staff is here to serve. Sincerely, Javier M. Gonzales, Mayor

GENERAL

SENIOR SERVICES

General Resources • 2016

Caregivers are met with unpredictable and ever-changing responsibilities in caring for seniors. Where there can be planning for day-to-day events, there are still random variables which change quickly and without warning. These variables can leave the caregiver and their loved unsure and searching for solutions. These General Resources act as a quick guide for the caregiver, and an avenue to find more information on the necessities available to seniors in a manner that is quick and efficient. This General Resource section touches upon financial, household, social and other services for seniors to utilize which affect everyday living. This allows caregivers to contact individuals with the foremost authority and expertise on certain issues, in order to provide the most complete and comprehensive care. Phone numbers and addresses are provided for easy access that you’ll want to be sure to keep handy. There is no way for a caregiver to be completely prepared for the changing tasks and hurdles that seniors meet daily, but these resources will equip caregivers with the tools to maintain daily life for their loved ones, and shed light on issues that many seniors face regularly.

New Mexico’s seniors require steady medical attention. It’s important that their caregivers know how to stay up to date on hospital check-ups, nursing and care options, as well as medical supply and pharmaceutical coverage. This Health section provides caregivers the easy to understand and access information on how to stay on top of a senior’s day-to-day health needs. Where health emergencies carry a high degree of immediacy and should be dealt with quickly and responsibly, this health guide focuses more on senior longevity and care. The services listed here fit into the daily lives of seniors and provide sustained health, comfort, and well being. This makes it easier to stay in touch with doctors, case managers and health specialists. The Health section is separated by category and allows the caregiver to pinpoint the exact person, specialist or organization to contact. There are also addresses provided which makes it easy to find the nearest hospital or clinic.

Interactive Caregiving™

Home Care • 2016

Home Care is a very vital aspect of many senior’s lives. While many seniors enjoy the independence of living at home, that is not to say that they don’t need supplementary care beyond what their caregivers can provide. Home health services help seniors maintain their health and wellbeing without having to leave the house, which makes daily life that much easier and more stress-free, while maintaining a much-needed sense of independence. By working with Home Care professionals, caregivers can be certain that their loved ones are being cared for consistently and thoroughly. This along with Respite Care allows the caregiver the piece of mind that their loved one is being taken care of, even when they can’t physically be the one giving care. This lightens the burden placed on the caregiver, while maintaining a high standard of continued care.

Home Instead Senior Care................................ 505-471-2777 ken.hendricks@homeinstead.com www.homeinsteadsantafe.com

Everyone is met with legal or financial issues occasionally, but many seniors have an especially hard time since many of them are living on very fixed incomes. Seniors are not without resources though. In fact, we’ve collected many of the most useful ones available right here. The Family Caregiver Resource Guide helps Caregivers and seniors find information on reverse mortgages, estate planning, wills, senior law practices, financial service firms, guardianship, as well as legal aid. When New Mexico’s seniors are able to take care of their legal and financial issues on their own, their sense of independence is fortified.

19

A reverse mortgage allows senior homeowners, 62 or older, to tap into the equity in their home without creating a mortgage payment. The interest, ongoing mortgage insurance and servicing fee (if there is one) are added to the balance each month and is re-paid whenever the house is sold. The homeowner retains title to the property and is responsible for paying the property taxes, homeowners insurance and keeping the house maintained in good condition. The money received from the reverse mortgage is not taxable as income, because it is borrowed money and eventually will be re-paid. The Financial Assessment and Property Charge rules apply to new FHA HECM case numbers ordered on or after April 27, 2015. Since it is a Federally Insured program, federal tax liens have to be taken care of and you can’t currently be in bankruptcy proceedings.

Residential care serves as a lifeline for many seniors in dire need of constant care. But there is a limit to how much any one person, no matter how dedicated, can do. When that limit is reached, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and adult communities should be considered. The Family Caregiver Guide lists these New Mexican facilities, and makes it easy for caregivers to contact officials and representatives. The decision to put a loved one in a nursing home or care facility is never easy, but there are factors that require attention such as Alzheimer’s and the need for assisted living; which most caregivers would be unable to address. When seniors receive proper care, they are healthy, safe, and thoroughly cared for. Residential care maintains a rich quality of life by providing the care that seniors need everyday. One of the best ways to show your commitment to a loved one is to make sure they are being cared for. There’s peace of mind in knowing qualified professionals are there for New Mexico’s seniors.
