2015–2016 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR The theme of our Summer 2016 Program was “The Great Adventure,” and

We are ecstatic that 95% of our children and youth maintained or improved their reading skills during summer 2016 when they would likely otherwise regress. Equally exciting is that 92% of our youth (grades 6–9) say that

youth participated in our Summer 2016 Program, following the conclusion of our 2015–2016 After-School Program of 170 participants. These children and youth worked with more than 2,000 total volunteers during the year, and were led by 117 college-aged young adults (8% more than last year!). We could not be more delighted that, to date, we have had 39 participants of our program come back as college-aged young adults to serve with Project Transformation (“PT Corps Members”). We have a name for this very special group of young people—Kid-to-Corps Members—and we look forward to cultivating and

Project Transformation teaches them to be a better (more caring, kind, altruistic) person. As the research continues to develop around social-emotional learning, we are honing and integrating more activities in our programming focused on skills like teamwork, confidence, kindness, and acceptance. Social-emotional skills are shown to be important predictors of success, not only in the academic realm, but in the long-term. Research

hiring many, many more! All that is achieved in and through Project Transformation is due only to our incredible partners. We have ambitious goals for the year to come, and are poised to achieve them because of our strong infrastructure, historical success, and significant partnerships. Fueled by our mission to connect children, college students, churches, and communities, and motivated to transform more lives through relationships, we continue in this great adventure of Project Transformation with thankfulness, enthusiasm, and joy. Very truly,

reveals that children with strong social-emotional skills are more likely to earn a high school diploma, pursue higher education, maintain a full-time Alyson Gregory Richter

Children – College Students – Churches. This is a win-win-win formula, but relationships are at the heart of everything we do. It is through relationships that lives are transformed.

2015–2016 AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY STUDENTS (GRADES 1–5)

2016 SUMMER PROGRAM: ELEMENTARY STUDENTS (GRADES 1–5)

You helped us provide an enriching Afterschool Program to 170 elementary-aged students!

With your support, 641 participants, grades 1–5, attended our Summer Program!

Programming occurred Monday–Thursday, 3–6 p.m. in seven low-income communities in Dallas and was delivered by our college-age AmeriCorps Members (“PT Corps Members”). Program components of our Afterschool Program include literacy instruction, homework help, arts enrichment, nutritional assistance, and recreational exercise. Of the children who regularly attended the program, 87% progressed in their literacy achievement (per their grade level expectations) according to an online literacy diagnostic known as i-Ready (the same currently used by Dallas ISD).

The elementary students read for 40 minutes, one-to-one, with a volunteer each day to improve fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, as well as to increase their confidence in reading. Additional literacy instruction was provided in the afternoon. Pre- and post-summer reading assessments indicated that 96% of elementary participants improved or maintained their grade level reading. Additionally, 77% of students indicated they are confident in reading as they head back to school. Our elementary participants read 15,272 books in this summer’s Reading Program.

“The best part of my job is having the opportunity to watch my kids find joy in their accomplishments and in their lives. I get to watch them work hard on completing a book and hear the excitement in their voices as they share their accomplishments with me. Our children celebrated milestones like being adopted, losing a tooth, birthdays, and making new friends. I think at the heart of Project Transformation is the growth that occurs within the children, young adult PT Corps Members, and the communities where we serve. This organization truly transforms lives!” – Jaime, Afterschool Program Site Coordinator at Grace UMC

In addition to literacy instruction, our Summer Program’s daily schedule for the elementary students included physical activity and healthy habits (age-appropriate nutrition and health information). Our lessons are project-based and teach not only academic skills, but also social-emotional skills, which emerging research tells us are essential to students’ success. Every participant also received healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks through our longstanding partnership with the North Texas Foodbank. During the 2016 Summer Program, 54,000 meals and snacks were provided to our children and youth. “I was leading the ‘Young Artists’ rotation one Thursday morning and we instructed the kids to draw themselves as a pirate. One of the fifth graders had the idea to draw himself as a ‘superhero pirate.’ He did not have an explanation, but I have a feeling that he has the confidence to believe he can do whatever he wants to do with his life. I never thought to put those two (pirate and superhero) together, but he did! I believe Project Transformation has helped instill that confidence in him and helped him see how much potential he has!” – Hannah, PT Corps Member at Walnut Hill UMC

98% of participants from the 2015–2016 Afterschool Program were promoted to the next grade level in fall 2016.

2016 SUMMER PROGRAM: YOUTH (GRADES 6–9)

2016 SUMMER PROGRAM: LEADERS IN TRAINING EXPERIENCE (GRADES 10–12)

94% of youth participants maintained or improved their grade level reading. Project Transformation served 289 participants, grades 6–9, through our Summer Program! In the summer youth program, a daily book club allowed students to practice their reading fluency and comprehension. This summer, the youth read 76,688 pages, gave 327 book reports, and learned 3,681 new grade-level vocabulary words. All of this hard work resulted in 94% of participants improving or maintaining their grade level reading! The Summer Program encompassed a range of lessons and activities that are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The weekly themes were comprised of social-emotional learning objectives which correspond to Project Transformation’s program pillars (develop literacy, celebrate diversity, cultivate leadership, and serve community) and also included an array of educational activities from all subject matter areas that are required to be taught and mastered by students in the state of Texas. “We were doing an activity where each student had a notecard with their name on it and they had to pass it around in a circle. Each student was told to write at least one word or phrase that was either encouraging or uplifting about the person whose card they received. As the activity came to an end, we each had to opportunity to read the comments on our cards. One comment struck me to the core: ‘You make us feel important.’ This one statement spoke volumes to me. If there was one thing I could give to these youth, it would be that! Making these young teens feel loved and valued is something I will forever be grateful of doing. I realized I have the ability to play a tremendous role in each of their lives. Project Transformation is not just another summer job, it is an opportunity—a life transforming opportunity!” – Crystal, PT Corps Member at Munger Place Church

6

Our fastest growing program is that for high school students, our Leaders in Training Experience (“LITE”) Program. This summer, we served 73 LITE participants at five site locations across Dallas! The LITE Program provides high school students with the knowledge and skills they need to become well-rounded citizens and the motivation and increased confidence to pursue higher education following graduation. Servant leadership is at the heart of this program. LITE participants read one-to-one with elementary students in our program, help with other components of the summer daycamp, and plan and implement their own service projects. Over the course of the summer, these LITEs volunteered a total of 4,188 hours. Our research-based curriculum focused on college/career readiness, writing workshops, critical thinking, ethics, diversity, global awareness, and also included time for reflection. Following the eight-week program, our LITE participants embark on a college tour, allowing them to explore college campuses and learn the process of admissions for higher education institutions in Texas. On post-program surveys, 95% of participants said that they were very likely to complete high school. “The college tour not only helped me explore colleges and expand my options after high school, but it also helped me create new friendships.” – Stephanie, LITE age 17 “This experience has made me more determined and now I know I want to be an English teacher in my future and help teenagers like me.” – Paola, LITE age 17 “This college tour opened my eyes to more opportunities. I am willing to work very hard for my future.” – Abigail, LITE age 15

URBAN CAMP AND ADVENTURE WEEK

URBAN CAMP AT CAMP BRIDGEPORT At the conclusion of the 8-week summer daycamp, our youth (grades 6–9) attend “Urban Camp,” a week-long sleepaway camp at the United Methodist camp and retreat center in Bridgeport, Texas. Urban Camp provides a nontraditional education setting where our youth develop new skills, build deep relationships with their peers, and grow in self-confidence. The overnight, skills-development camp is the culmination of the summer experience, and our PT Corps Members act as the youths’ camp counselors for the week. Urban Camp’s purpose is to provide skills development activities to all youth, such as archery, horseback riding, high ropes course, zip line, fishing and swimming, with 20 total offerings. Skills development activities are important in nurturing maturity as well as fostering social and interpersonal skills. Additionally, the physical activities are especially crucial for our youth whose socioeconomic status often limits their access to and participation in team sports. For many of the students that we serve, this is the only time all year that they are able to leave their neighborhoods and experience life outside of an urban setting. “Urban Camp has brought me closer to God and helped me be more responsible. I also made more friends.” – Cesar, Youth Participant age 13

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

“I feel more confident, strong, and determined.” – Gabriela, Youth Participant age 13 “I love camp so much and I hope to be a PT Corps Member someday and help kids just like me.” – Misikir, Youth Participant age 12 “I have gained confidence and self-eteem. People here really care about you! All around I see family and that is what really matters!” – Miguel, Youth Participant age 14 “I loved art and horseback riding. I also liked getting to know the PT Corps Members. It is a great experience to have and I am definitely coming back next year!” – Faith, Youth Participant age 11

143 youth participants (grades 6–9) attended Urban Camp this summer. ADVENTURE WEEK AT PLEASANT MOUND-URBAN PARK UMC Each summer, one elementary site is selected for Adventure Week, an optional 9th week of programming, comprised of four, day-long field trip experiences. This summer, 33 students from our Pleasant Mound-Urban Park UMC site location explored the Perot Museum of Nature and Science,

the Dallas Museum of Art, Klyde Warren Park, the Dallas Zoo, and Celebration Park. Without Adventure Week, some of these students might not have access to these educational, interactive and enriching experiences during the summer months.

End-of-program parent evaluations show that parents overwhelmingly feel that Project Transformation not only benefits the children enrolled in the program, but also the family unit. Parents value the academic component of our programming, with 99% of parents agreeing or strongly agreeing that Project Transformation helped to improve their child’s reading skills. Overall, 100% of parents indicate satisfaction with our Summer Program and the activities provided, with many parents telling us about the positive changes they see in their children. “When my son comes to Project Transformation, I notice differences in him. He is doing better and better! I am so thankful for this organization and I don’t know what to give apart from just thanks! Without this program, I don’t know what many of these children would do.” – Afterschool Program Participant Parent “This program is hands down the most organized, caring, generous of spirit, conscious, and detail-oriented I have ever experienced personally or professionally.” – Summer Program Participant Parent “Educating our children is one of the best things you could do! Thank you for taking the time to help mine with reading skills. The safe and loving environment you provide is a blessing.” – Summer Program Participant Parent

PROGRAM FOR PT CORPS MEMBERS: COLLEGE-AGED YOUNG ADULTS

Project Transformation's work is set apart from other similar programs by the college-age young adults who implement our programs each year. Through year-long or summer-long commitments, these young adult PT Corps Members invest in the lives of low-income children while exploring their own calling to future ministry and service. Members take responsibility for implementing nearly all aspects of our programs. In addition to giving them a sense of ownership that reinforces their commitment to the program, this gives them very practical leadership experience that will benefit them when they enter the workforce after college. This summer, our PT Corps Members represented 56 different colleges and universities throughout the United States. Their hometowns were spread across 20 states. Of the 117 PT Corps Members who served, 48 of them had served with us before and 19 of them were former participants in our program as children and youth!

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE AND KID-TO-CORPS EXPERIENCE

COMMUNITY LIVING

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

KID-TO-CORPS EXPERIENCE

PT Corps Members live together on campus at either Southern Methodist University (Dallas sites) or Austin College (Texoma Area site), and share meals, host worship services, and engage in social events together. In this environment, PT Corps Members exchange program ideas and feedback, form lifelong friendships, and have a forum to share how this 10-week experience truly transforms the trajectory of their lives.

Over 1,700 volunteers dedicated their time and talents to serve with Project Transformation this summer, volunteering 11,626 hours reading with children, serving dinner to PT Corps Members and hosting Family Fun Nights at our ten site locations. We cannot thank our volunteers enough for their support this summer and throughout the year! The work of Project Transformation would not happen without our dedicated volunteers.

Our PT Corps Members serve as positive role models in the lives of the children and youth and take an interest in the holistic growth and development of each one of them. Our goal is for our participants to graduate high school, go to college, and then return to serve as PT Corps Members themselves with Project Transformation. As children and youth grow up in our programs, attend college, and return with a commitment to influence their communities, the multiplying effects of Project Transformation will occur. As of the 2015–2016 programming year, 39 former participants in the program have returned to serve as college-enrolled PT Corps Members, 19 of them during the 2016 Summer Program alone!

FRIDAY EXPERIENCES Programming for children and youth runs Monday–Thursday, with Friday set apart as an intentional day where programming is provided to the PT Corps Members. In collaboration with other for- and not-for-profit organizations, community leaders provide an overview of their own work, as well as share their call to ministry and service with the PT Corps Members. This summer, PT Corps Members selected from more than 20 offerings, ranging from a homeless ministry to the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce to an arts organization in south Dallas.

“The children were so sweet and I really enjoyed seeing them decode words and be proud! They had obviously been learning the letters and sounds and had all the tools they needed, just needed practice and encouragement!” – Summer Volunteer “Ever since I was little, I've been volunteering at Project Transformation and it's helped to shape me into the person I am today.” – Summer Volunteer

91% of PT Corps Members say, as a result of their experience at Project Transformation, they have a desire to serve their home communities. “Many of the kids we serve are going through a lot at home and in their lives and it has been great to see them open up to us as their mentors. Everything has been great with the kids at our site locations as well as back at SMU where we all live while serving. I work with a great team and our ability to set our egos aside has been our greatest strength! All of the PT Corps Members are great people and Project Transformation has been a home away from home for me. I feel so honored and blessed to be working with such amazing kids and team members.” – Richard, PT Corps Member Project Transformation North Texas is proud to be an AmeriCorps organization, supporting young adults in service to their community.

91% of PT Corps Members say they have a desire to serve their home communities as a result of their experience at Project Transformation. 10

100% of volunteers said they had a positive experience. 58% of Summer 2016 volunteers were returners from last summer. 11

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Many churches face challenges of shifting demographic trends, inward focus, and difficulty connecting with new and diverse neighbors. Project Transformation worked with ten site churches in the North Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to resource clergy and lay leaders with the tools they needs to revitalize their faith communities and adapt to their changing ministry environment.

Relationships are the basis of transformation in local congregations and in neighborhoods. In 2015–2016, through coaching, learning events, and goal-setting with site churches, Project Transformation equipped churches for the work of connecting with neighbors in ways that lead to change.

AGE GROUPS

We are excited to further develop our program design to highlight our unique programming niche: transformation through relationships. It is clear from research that literacy development is important given summer reading loss, but developing children and youths’ social and emotional skills through leadership and service also helps build crucial non-cognitive abilities that are often learned only in our unique milieu. Literacy development will always be an integral component of our programming. This year, however, we added enhanced social and emotional indicators to our program design and evaluation tools, based on our work with SMU’s Center on Research and Evaluation, to ensure our goals related to social and emotional development are being reached. These indicators on which our program’s focus are aligned with our program pillars (develop literacy, cultivate leadership, serve community, celebrate diversity) and are leveled for age appropriateness.
