Career Record: 79-46

On July 2, 2010, Missy Doherty was introduced as the ninth head coach in Penn State women's lacrosse program history. A winner of five national championships as a player and coach, Doherty came to Happy Valley after a highly successful stint at Towson University in Baltimore. In seven years at Towson, Doherty built the Tigers into one of the top teams in the Colonial Athletic Association and into a nationally recognized and competitive program. At Towson, she posted an impressive 79-46 (.632) record, including five seasons with 13 or more victories, and led it to three CAA Tournament championships (2005, 2008-09) and a share of one CAA regular season title (2008). Doherty coached six All-Americans during her tenure, including Towson's first three-time honoree in program history. In 2010, Doherty guided Towson to a season of unprecedented success, as the Tigers earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and received their first-ever top 10 national ranking in the IWLCA Division I poll. Prior to arriving at Towson, Doherty had a successful six-year stretch as an assistant coach at three different schools. At Princeton University, she was an integral member of the coaching staff that led the Tigers to NCAA championships in 2002 and 2003. During Doherty's tenure, Princeton compiled a 49-9 record and captured three straight Ivy League crowns. Doherty also served two seasons at Brown University (1999-2000) after starting her coaching career at Vanderbilt in 1998. A 1997 graduate of the University of Maryland, Doherty was a fouryear letterwinning defender, helping the Terrapins claim three NCAA championships. Maryland was a dominant force in collegiate women's lacrosse during her career, amassing a remarkable 68-2 record, including an NCAA record 50-game winning streak. Also a standout in the classroom,

Tara Hohenshelt is entering her 12th season as a member of the Nittany Lion women's lacrosse staff. After serving as Director of Operations for the 2010 season, she has returned to her role as an assistant coach. A 1997 graduate of Penn State, she was a defender for four years on the lacrosse team. e former Tara Rowlyk returned to Happy Valley in 1999 after serving a year as the lacrosse coach and athletic recruiter at Centenary College. Before her tenure there, she was an assistant coach at NCAA quarterfinalist Princeton University. Hohenshelt played for Penn State's 1995 NCAA semifinal team and helped the Lions reach the quarterfinals in 1996 and 1997. She served as a tri-captain in her senior year. She was also the co-captain of the Philadelphia I team that won the 1997 USWLA national championship. As an undergraduate student-athlete, Hohenshelt represented the women's lacrosse team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She was cochair of its public relations committee and served as an executive board member. An outstanding student with a 3.41 GPA in secondary math education, Hohenshelt was a Dean's List student for six semesters. She was twice named a Division I Academic All-American by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and won Big Ten Conference academic honors as well. Hohenshelt was a three-sport letterwinner while at Ridley High School in Folsom, Pa. She is married to Penn State women's volleyball assistant coach Dennis Hohenshelt. e couple resides in State College with their five-year old son Jacob Owen and daughter Reese Avery, who was born in March 2010.

On July 27, 2010, Amy Altig, an assistant at Princeton for the last three years, was introduced as an addition to Missy Doherty's staﬀ at Penn State. Altig will be involved in coaching the goalkeepers and defense. At Princeton, working primarily with the goalkeepers, Altig helped develop an All-American in net and establish the Tigers as one of the Ivy League's and nation's top defenses. In her three years at Princeton, the Tigers compiled a 33-19 record and qualiﬁed for the NCAA Tournament twice. Prior to Princeton, Altig served as the top assistant coach at the University of Richmond for two seasons. While with the Spiders, they won two Atlantic-10 titles and earned two bids to the NCAA postseason. Her work with the goalkeepers and the defense helped Richmond lead the A-10 in goals against average. Altig played collegiately at James Madison University, receiving AllCAA honors twice as a standout goalkeeper. In her senior season, she ranked in the top 20 in Division I in save percentage and goals against average. Still active in lacrosse, Altig was named to the 2010-11 U.S. National Team in August 2010. She will train with the squad in advance of the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup. Altig was an alternate on the 2009 U.S. World Cup Team and has been a member of several U.S. Elite and Development Teams. In the summer of 2008, she earned a spot on the U.S. Touring Team that traveled to the Czech Republic to compete in the Prague Cup. A native of Millersburg, Md., Altig earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a concentration in sports management from James Madison in 2005.

2011 Season Outlook e 2011 season will usher in a new era for Penn State women’s lacrosse, as Missy Doherty takes over the reins as the ninth head coach of the NCAA’s second winningest program. Considered one of the rising stars in collegiate women’s lacrosse, Doherty, who has won five national championships as a player and coach, comes to Happy Valley following a highly successful head coaching stint at Towson University, where she totaled 79 victories in seven seasons. While the main leadership presence patrolling the sidelines will be different this season, many of the players on the field should be familiar to Nittany Lion fans. e 2011 team is veteran laden, featuring as many as 10 upperclassmen that could be regular starters, including seven seniors. Overall, returning in 2011 is a squad comprised of 18 letterwinners and eight starters that will be captained by five valued seniors in Ashley Boccio, Maggie Dunbar, Jackie Eastman, Laura Lesnick, and Jen Steadman. Augmenting the roster will be the No. 9-ranked recruiting class in the nation, according to Inside Lacrosse. “We are extremely lucky to inherit the group that we did,” said Doherty. “One of the things that could put this team over the top is the leadership of our senior class. ey have bought into what we have been doing and teaching. ey are great leaders and they are hard workers. ey set an example for the younger players to follow, both physically and mentally. at is something that is hard to coach. at is what gives me confidence for this year. With a senior class like that, we can take off fairly quickly.” ATTACK With the majority of its point production returning from the 2010 season, the Penn State

players. Sophomore Katie Guy and junior Aly Adams will fulﬁll a critical role in the midﬁeld, serving as Penn State’s top draw specialists. Junior Elaine Welch, a tall and physically strong player, and freshman Lizzy Carney, who had a standout preseason, will be counted on for regular contributions. Freshmen Lauren Purvis, a rare two-sport athlete at Penn State, and twins Ali and Evan Foulsham will also compete for minutes.

attack will be one of the team’s greatest areas of strength in 2011. Senior Jen Steadman and sophomore Molly Fernandez, the team’s top two leading scorers a year ago with 45 and 40 points, respectively, will spearhead the unit. Working behind the crease, sophomore Hayley Sofarnos, who topped the team in assists with 18 in her rookie season, and senior Mary Dean have great vision and excel at feeding their teammates in front of the net. e attack was bolstered in the offseason with the addition of gifted newcomer Mackenzie Cyr, one of the nation’s most sought after recruits. Supplying offensive depth and versatility will be senior Megan Hollerbach, junior Bridget Callahan, and freshmen Avery Curley. “We don’t really have one type of attacker on the field, which is nice,” said Doherty. “We have some great 1-on-1 players and we have some great feeders. It’s a luxury to have that mix. We are not just a one-note offense. at will allow us to take advantage of some different things.” MIDFIELD e midfield will also serve as a scoring source thanks to the offensive talents of senior Laura Lesnick and junior eresa Zichelli, a duo that combined for 47 goals in 2010. Doherty describes Lesnick as a player “who can score whenever she wants to score” while Zichelli has netted 43 goals in her first two seasons as a Nittany Lion. Seniors Maggie Dunbar and Jackie Eastman, an experienced duo that has combined to make 55 career starts, will be key to the transition game. Dunbar, a First Team All-ALC selection last year, is a high-energy competitor who is a force on both ends of the field while Eastman uses her blazing speed to shine as one of the team’s best 1-on-1

DEFENSE/GOALKEEPERS While the defensive ranks are thin in terms of numbers, they are stout in respect to leadership and ability. Anchoring the unit will be senior defenders Ashley Boccio and Katy Wick along with junior goalkeeper Dana Cahill. “Ashley and Katy have done a great job at leading the defense,” said Doherty. “And another positive regarding our defense is that we have a terrific goalkeeper. Dana will be starting for the first time in her career but she has had a strong year so far. Our midfield provides an excellent defense as well, so they can fill in the holes if necessary.” Midfielders Maggie Dunbar, Jackie Eastman, and Katie Guy are all former defenders and have the versatility to make an impact anywhere on the field. Defender Brittaney Chamberlain, who played in a career high 12 games in 2010, and Colleen Shea will also provide the Lions with additional strength at the defensive end. Promising goalkeeper prospect freshman Melissa Lloyd will serve as Cahill’s understudy and will capably fill in if needed.

AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE

History e American Lacrosse Conference, in its ninth year of existence, is a lacrosse-only conference that consists of the University of Florida, John Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Penn State University, e Ohio State University, the University of South Carolina, and Vanderbilt University. In 2001 coaches from Davidson, John Hopkins, Northwestern, Ohio, Penn State, Ohio State and Vanderbilt met to form this conference as a means to provide more opportunities for the student-athletes at their respective institutions. In 2002, the American Lacrosse Conference sponsored its first season, with Vanderbilt winning the league title. In 2004 the ALC received an automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Championship for the first time. Davidson withdrew from the conference in 2005. In June of 2006 Florida announced it would be elevating women’s lacrosse to a varsity sport for the 2010 season and in October of 2006, the Gators joined the ALC. In February of 2007, South Carolina also announced the addition of lacrosse to the varsity roster, and in March of 2007, the Gamecocks were admitted to the conference. In 2006 the conference approved a tournament format and 2007 marked the first ALC post-season tournament, with the winner earning the automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. However, in 2008 the conference tournament featured only five teams, and the automatic qualification was suspended. With Florida sponsoring a varsity team in 2010, the fourth year of the tournament, the NCAA bid has been restored and the ALC Championship winner will again earn the league’s automatic berth.

A Winning Tradition e American Lacrosse Conference is synonymous with excellence, both on and off the field. e league has boasted the top conference RPI in five of the eight years of competition, a testament to the depth of the conference. Members of the ALC are consistently found in the national rankings; the conference typically boasts at least three schools in the top-20 polls. e national champion has been a member of the ALC in five of the conference’s eight years of existence; the league has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Championship in six of the eight years. In 2007, three members of the conference were designated as seeds. On an individual basis, student-athletes from the conference have been honored for outstanding performances on a regular basis. e Honda Award, recognizing the top player in the game, has been presented to a student-athlete from the conference in each of the last five seasons, including three times to Kristen Kjellman from Northwestern and twice to Hannah Nielsen, also from NU. e Tewaaraton Trophy, which honors the premier collegiate player, has been awarded to a student-athlete from the conference for four consecutive years, with Kjellman winning twice and Nielsen being honored during the last two seasons. In 2009, Northwestern’s Hilary Bowen was named the ESPN e Magazine Academic All-American of the Year. Northwestern’s Kelly Amonte Hiller has earned National Coach of the Year honors in three of the last five seasons. International Impact e conference has been part of significant lacrosse events as both student-athletes and coaches have participated in both the World Cup and the Under-19 World Championships. Two members of the 2003 USA World Championship team went on to play lacrosse at conference institutions; four current student-athletes at conference schools won a world title in 2007 with the USA Under-19 team. In 2005, Hannah Nielsen won a gold medal with the Australian national team at the IFWLA World Cup; in 2009 Northwestern alumna Kristen Kjellman, Saran Albrecht, and Lindsay Munday with Ohio State grad Regina Oliver to win the FIL World Cup.

Diane Whipple Memorial Award enn State remembers the late Diane Whipple, a two-time All-American and Penn State’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1990, whose life was tragically taken in a dog attack in San Francisco on January 26, 2001. “Diane’s tragic death left her many friends here and throughout the country in shock and grief,” said Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley. “She was a young person of unlimited possibility. During her career as a student-athlete, Diane excelled at the highest level.” Whipple was an integral member of the 1987 and 1989 National Championship teams. After her collegiate career was over, Whipple continued to impact the world of lacrosse by coaching. After serving as the head coach at UC San Diego, Whipple became the head coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. “Diane brought to those coaching responsibilities the same dedication and purpose that marked her play as an athlete,” stated Curley. “Our thoughts and prayers are forever with the members of the St. Mary’s team who have lost a mentor and friend. Those who knew Diane will forever treasure the memory. She was a marvelous athlete and, even more important, a teammate of uncommon grace and sensitivity.” To keep the spirit of Diane Whipple alive, the Penn State women’s lacrosse program created an award in her name in 2001. The Diane Whipple Award is presented annually to the Penn State women’s lacrosse player “who displays a competitive passion for the game, and whose work ethic demonstrates the desire and determination to achieve success.” The award winner for the 2010 season was Marisa Lozano. Forced to miss her senior year after suffering a serious knee injury in the fall, Marisa was undeterred in her determination to make an impact in her final season as a Nittany Lion. Leading from the sidelines, she supported her teammates with words of encouragement and valuable tactical advice. Marisa, both as a player and as a person, exhibited the attributes and personified the spirit for which the Diane Whipple Award stands.
