Rates range from $2,500 to over $8,000 per person, based on double occupancy. Barge cruises are typically all-inclusive. Some barges have single cabins with no single supplement. Thailand:

n e Oforpbusiness By Marian Goldberg

The flooding situation in Thailand has stabilized and “Thailand is ready to welcome back tourists,” emphasizes Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, New York Office. I spoke with Khun Srisuda on Friday, December 2. She had just returned from Thailand that morning! She was excited to announce that "Thailand is dry now. Transportation - trains, road traffic, flights - is operating normally. All tourist areas are accessible and all tourist attractions are open. Even the World Heritage site of Ayutthaya, the most notable tourist attraction to be flooded, is undergoing restoration, but is fully accessible!" Khun Srisuda had been in Thailand to attend the Chiang Mai North Tourism Forum (CTF) and Andaman Travel Trade (ATT) Expo in Phuket, as well as a travel agent and tour operator FAM trip to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, offered immediately following. She reported that, "All events were extremely successful." An impressive 310 buyers and 130 sellers participated in the CTF, and 322 buyers and 126 sellers attended the ATT. The reaction from the agents was very positive, but interestingly, they felt that the set ten-minute appointments at CTF were too short, and they preferred the free-visit booth set-up at ATT. The North American FAM trip included twelve luxury travel agents, one travel writer from the United States and three travel writers from Canada. The tour operators, travel agents, and media experienced the highlights of Thailand. They visited: the Royal Grand Palace & the Temple of the Emerald Buddha,Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), the Temple of Dawn, the Art of the Kingdom and the Marble Temple, and they indulged in a traditional Thai massage. The group became aware first-hand that the Bangkok flood news is exaggerated, and the travel agents acknowledged that they can book, even Bangkok, with confidence.

Northern Thailand was not very affected by flooding. About 40 miles outside Chiang Mai, the FAM group took part in ELE, or Elephant Life Experience (www.elelife.com), Thailand's only boutique elephant camp. After an exciting bamboo raft ride across the river to the jungle lodge, they personally met "their" elephants. They intimately brushed and groomed them and had a chance to ride them both bareback, and in a wooden box seat atop the animals. However, the highlight, according to one agent, was the opportunity to paint a watercolor with "her" elephant. Yes, the elephants hold paint brushes in their long trunks and paint both abstract and landscape pictures on paper affixed to easels. Guests even get to take these unique paintings home. Beyond the elephants, the group paid a visit to the Bwa G'Naw people, known as the Karen Hill Tribe - the largest hill tribe in Southeast Asia, renowned for their sustainable terraced rice fields. The group also hiked to a pristine waterfall within the Royal

THAILANDm Project Foundation (www.royalprojectthailand. com/general/english) area. This project was set up originally in 1969 to advance sustainable crop cultivation in the highlands as a replacement for opium, but now the area is a mecca for tourists. They returned to Chiang Mai to catch up on some shopping, before heading off to Phuket. In Phuket, the group ended their adventure with an up-close encounter with the dramatic rock formations of Phang-Nga as they paddled through Phang Nga Bay in a sea canoe (www. phuketseacanoe.com). However, this was not before they attended the productive ATT meetings. At ATT, agents met with numerous tourism and hospitality representatives from the south, and the North American travel industry group was introduced to the ultimate beauty of Thailand's beaches and resorts, including Six Senses Hotel - Yao Noi (www.sixsenses.com/ SixSensesYaoNoi), Andara Resort Villas - Phuket (www.andaraphuket .com) , and Banyan Tree Hotel & Resort - Phuket (www.banyantree. com/en/phuket). Banyan Tree just opened a new familyfriendly resort on Phuket on December 1st. The flagship resort, under the Angsana brand, Angsana Laguna Phuket (www.lagunaphuket.com/hotels/ angsana), is billed as Asia's first integrated resort, designed for travelers looking for a stylish and vibrant travel experience. The $30 million renovation of the old facility has created a 409-room facility with family-oriented amenities, such as a tree-house inspired Kid's Club and Cafe. It also sports Phuket's largest beach club, set to open in March 2012.

Tourism is Bound to Bounce Back The flooding caused the number of international tourists to Thailand to drop by 70 percent. However, Thailand is confident that

Golf and Spa massages are only the beginning

it will bounce back and now has introduced its "Beautiful Thailand" campaign to restore tourists' confidence. The campaign involves strong engagement with both the press and tour operators. Since the middle of November, TAT executives have met with the majority of foreign media stationed in Thailand to get the word out overseas. Additionally, they are working with TV and movie production companies to feature celebrities in marketing programs. Furthermore, from December 6-14, they executed an international media FAM trip, bringing 300 international journalists to Thailand. The group included two media from Canada and four from the USA. They spent three days each in ChiangMai and Bangkok on themed trips. "We want media to come back and personally tell their audiences that Thailand is beautiful and the International Airport was not affected and is operating as normal. In fact, the media images of the flooded airport were images of Don Muang, the domestic airport, not Suvarnabhumi International Airport!" explains Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak. TAT is also working with international suppliers. They are doing this directly through their 25 overseas offices, developing local

by the sea

Australia manages to offer the best of both worlds in many of their top tourist spots. If buzzing around Sydney’s cosmopolitan and culturally rich city center, you are surrounded by national parks and a bevy of beaches. If in the globally known Gold Coast region, you are privy to sun soaked beaches and the best breaks in the business, while being surrounded by sophisticated, Miami style high rises. So, if looking for a bit of town and country or city and sea in your next trip Down Under, consider Sydney and The Gold Coast to be your top spots.

Thousands of stone pillars rise

in cool smoke-gray mists high above river-laced gorges. Cliffside walks lead to age-old hill-towns and richly adorned Mingdynasty temples. Limestone caves bristle with stalactites and stalagmites in phantasmagorical shapes. Placid green lakes reflect gnarled pines like Chinese landscape paintings come alive. Few places on earth are as visually compelling as the Zhangjiajie region in mainland China’s Hunan Province. In James Cameron’s 2009 film “Avatar,” its mist-wreathed mountains were the inspiration for Hallelujah Mountain in the fairytale world of Pandora. Home to three major ethnic minorities, the Tujia, Bai and Miao, the region is also culturally rich. The 12-acre Tujia Folk Custom Park showcases the music and arts of Zhangjiajie’s largest ethnic minority. Colorful embroidery, which Chinese emperors once claimed as tribute, adorns folk costumes, inexpensive bags and knapsacks sold at roadside stands, and elegant, yet affordable, embroidered paintings at the Tujia Embroidery Shop. Staged at the foot of Tianmen Mountain, “Fairy Fox and the Woodman” and “Charming Western Hunan” (www. meilixiangxi.cn) with both indoor and outdoor stages, are stunning extravaganzas that marry age-old folk tales with Hollywoodstyle special effects, and hundreds of costumed singers, dancers and acrobats. Since the 1980s, thousands of Chinese, Japanese and Koreans have visited the Zhangjiajie region, home ofWulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 and a Global Geopark since 2004.

Yet, surprisingly, the region remains virtually unknown to American tourists. All that is about to change. “In 2012,” says Ding Yunyong, director of the Zhangjiajie Tourism Bureau, “our priority is to develop the European and North American markets, particularly the markets for independent and high-end travelers, and MICE participants. We hope to catch up—and even lead—the tourism market.”

Settling Into Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie’s location should help put it on the map for Westerners. From Beijing or Shanghai, it’s about a 2 1/2-hour flight to Zhangjiajie Lotus Airport. There also are frequent trains from Shanghai (15 hours) and Beijing (22 hours). After several days in Beijing or Shanghai, plan to spend 5-7 days exploring Zhangjiajie. Spring, summer or early fall is the best time to visit. Late October and November can be chilly and damp. Winter brings the beauty of snow and ice covered trees and mountains. In any season, pack warm jackets, hats and gloves as well as sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. Zhangjiajie City has about 60 starred hotels. Four and fivestar hotels tend to the monumental, with spacious grounds, facades guarded by massive statues of elephants or other “auspicious” creatures, gargantuan lobbies and spacious, well-appointed rooms. Expect spas, tennis courts and pools, but this being China, don’t be surprised to find badminton courts and chess rooms, too. Incredibly, such palatial hotels only charge about $85 - $200 for doubles,

depending on room category, and whether it’s high season (March - end of November) or low season (December - end of February). Tariffs can double during holidays, including the Spring Festival (January 22-28, 2012) and Mid- Autumn Festival (September 30 - October 7, 2012), but they’re still a bargain. Most visitors dine in their hotels at huge buffet-style restaurants. But top hotels also have a dozen private dining rooms where guests feast on 10 or more Hunan dishes, including sweet-andsour pork, spicy hot pot with beef and vegetables, duck and lamb, fish, and succulent braised pork belly (a favorite of Hunan-born Chairman Mao). Also served are potent local rice wine, and fragrant mountain-grown tea. Opened just nine months ago, 500-room Sunshine Hotel & Resort (www.sunshinehotelzjj.com), 10 minutes from downtown’s airport and rail station, is one of the most luxurious. Throughout the day, the excellent buffet restaurant serves scores of well-prepared Asian and Western dishes. At the city’s northern edge, close to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, are two other excellent five-star hotels: 456room Pullman Zhangjiajie (www.pullmanhotels.com), part of the inter-national Accor chain and with three restaurants, and Qinghe Jin Jiang International Hotel (www.qhjjhotel.com), whose buffet hall serves Chinese, Japanese and South Korean dishes.
